      Royal Selangor Club H3

      (for those unfamiliar with Malaysia, this was NOT Mother Hash)

      The temps have been in the 90s F (30s C) all week, but an afternoon shower cooled things off (actually enjoy the heat). With the rain on the ground, the humidity was super high, and I already need no help getting my sweat on. So right from the start, I was soaking wet. Trail started at the Royal Selangor Club, and although it was basically a pavement pounder, it was still an interesting trail.

      We had somewhere between 50 and 80 hashers on trail (meaning I saw about 50+ at the start, but counted 80+ after). The checks were quite difficult, with the first mark being roughly 150 meters away (which on a couple occasions was two blocks and turn left to find the first mark). With all the extra checking, I had about 9 kms, but my guess true trail was right around 7 kms (but also, the marks ran out about a km short of the finish - good thing I knew where the finish was).

      Although I have run with them once before, 9 years ago . . . Overall, I did not get the feeling they get many visitors anymore. There was no mention of the two visitors, no one really spoke to me unless I spoke first . . . and one fine gentlemen actually suggested I leave (since I was not a member of the RSC) after the trail (but that is another story). Fortunately, one hasher named Sly stepped up and covered for me, so all was well in the end. As the evening lingered on, I did have a few nice chats with some of the hashers. Along with that, I also had a couple Tiger beers, and a bite to eat, and no hard feelings. But next time I turn up in KL, I hope the Damansara H3 is up and running again, so I can run with them instead. Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge. On On to more fun on tomorrow's trail with the Petaling H3.      Read more

      Kuala Lumpur

      Nach den Batu Caves war ich dann in der Innenstadt von Kuala Lumpur. Sehr aufgeräumt, sehr international. Ähnlich wie in Georgetown sind auch hier alle Religionen und Rassen friedlich vereint, nur dass hier eben auch das ökonomische Herz Malaysias schlägt. Auf dem vierten und fünften Bild sieht man die Jamek Moschee, hier wurde die Stadt gegründet. Heute ist sie kaum noch zu erkennen zwischen den Hochhäusern🤔.
      Danach war ich noch in der Chinatown essen, es waren zum Glück keine Würmer 😁.

      Rainy day in KL

      Found an old cinema nearby that has been converted into a VERY cool bookshop. The price of the books is fixed to the cost that a cinema ticket was when the cinema was open many years ago, which meant they were very cheap and so despite having kindles we bought a book each.

      The rain then got VERY bad so we went for lunch in a really nice cafe where we read our new books for a while. We then to a cheaper hotel and caught up with family for the siblings’ birthdays!      Read more

      Neues Land, neue Challenge

      Tschau Thailand und hallöchen Malaysia 🇲🇾

      Da der Reiseführer und das Auswertige Amt von Reisen in den tiefen Süden Thailands abraten und es dort noch häufig zu Bombenanschlägen von separatistischen Gruppen und Entführungen kommt, haben wir uns gegen dieses Abenteuer entschieden und sind per Flieger nach Kuala Lumpur geflogen.
      Hier angekommen galt es erstmal neue SIM-Karte und Währung zu bekommen und dann einen Weg durch den Verkehrs-Dschungel zu unserem tollen Hostel in Chinatown zu finden.
      Den Abend haben wir dann mit einer Tour nach Little India verbracht und den einmal wöchentlich stattfindenden Markt gleich mit besucht. Auch absolut einen Ausflug wert!

      Generell erster Eindruck: es geht etwas rauher und weniger freundlich als in Thailand zu (noch freundlicher wäre aber auch unmöglich). Aber das pulsierende Leben hier in der Stadt und die vielen parallel existierenden Kulturen gefallen uns super gut. Wir sind gespannt auf die nächsten Tage!

      Einzige Ausnahme: die Nationalfrucht Malaysias, die Durian-Frucht (Stinkefrucht) gibts leider echt an jeder Ecke, und man riecht sie dann auch noch eine Ecke weiter. 🥴      Read more

      Our favorite KL hotel - Shangri-la

      Another Shangri-la hotel. One of our all-time favorite hotels. We are having a very happy 3 days here, enjoying the good location close to the Petronas Twin Towers, the Horizon Club Lounge and all the benefits that come with that. As with any Shangri-la, the staff members are all amazing 👏. They really make a stay memorable.Read more

      Day 15

      Walking day around downtown KL

      January 12 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

      Had breakfast in the hotel. They had a great buffet with a lot of options. Then, we went exploring, checked out the Petronas Towers and the mall inside, and then explored the KLCC park. Stopped for a drink at the Healy Mac's Irish Pub, then went back to the hotel and spent a couple of hours by the pool reading. Went back to Healy Mac's for some appies, then walked over to Jalan Alor Food Street, had a delicious beef Roti. While walking, we saw the new Merdeka 118 building, which is 678.9m tall and is just completed, the second tallest building in the world, second to Burj Khalifa. On the way back to the hotel, we stopped on a street with a bunch of bars and had a nightcap, and people watched for a while, which is always amazing later in the day. We also noted that the license plates on vehicles don't have any regional identification, just the license number on a black background. KL is nice, but definitely not as clean or refined as Singapore. They do have some homeless people, whereas we didn't see any in Singapore, thanks to their government subsidized housing for low income workers.Read more

      United nations - the new one

      Auflösung von vorgestern abend:
      ich bin brav im appartment geblieben.

      Tagsüber weiter KL erkundet, leckeres lokales essen bei karaoke genossen und dann ging es auf die dachterasse. Keine 10min alleine gesessen und den blick über die stadt schweifen lassen, da kamen schon die anderen vom vortag.
      Die gruppe hat dann sogar noch zuwachs bekommen und wir haben eine neue united nations gegründet.

      Nach ein paar stunden in gemeinsamer runde, interessanten gesprächen und vielleicht dem ein oder anderen 🐅 🍺 war klar, es geht in den club. Dödöm.

      Kurzfassung: bis dato unvorstellbar
      Das war alles so viel an eindrücken, neuen situationen, viele Menschen und ein richtig übler abend. Im positiven sinne, aber ich brauchte wirklick den tag zum verarbeiten.

      Wir waren im millenium club KL. Einfach hineinspaziert, die vip loge bezogen und dann wurden alle wünsche einfach erfüllt bzw gegen geld erfüllt worden werden. Und ich hab gestern wieder nicht bezahlen dürfen.
      Singapore dollar regelt. Selbst ein sänger von der Bühne hat uns besucht. Wir waren zu acht, ich der einzige "weiße" im gesamten club. Gefühlt hatte jeder von uns eine servicekraft zur seite. Crazy. Dir wird beim pinkeln im stehen sogar der nacken massiert. Das hab ich aber dankend und bestimmend abgelehnt. Kostet extra :)

      Hab mit der rechten hand gelernt mit stäbchen zu essen. Selbst ne chiliflocke konnte ich greifen. Deutsche und japaner verstehen sich einfach gut. Nun zum ersten mal über die letzten tage selbst erleben dürfen. Danke nach Osaka, ich komm vorbei :)

      Kenne nun zwei neue trinkspiele (1x gewonnen, 1x verloren). Man muss an den würfel, unter dem glas, anlegen können. Alle würfeln gleichzeitig und der letzte muss den schnaps obendrauf trinken. Beim zweiten spielt man quasi poker mit Würfeln. Die 1 ist dann das ass.

      Man darf unten natürlich nicht auf die bühne. Bis stufe zwei hab ich mich hochgetanzt...

      Für alles weitere gern mich ansprechen 🤣

      Nach Malacca haben wir den Bus nach KL genommen, wo wir nur 2 Nächte blieben, da wir uns doch eher nach Natur sehnen🐢 aber es ist eine große & bunte Stadt. Jeden Tag sind wir zum gleichen indischen Restaurant gegangen, weil der einfach so lecker ist. An einem Morgen sind wir auch zu den „Batu Caves“ gefahren, ein Hindu-Tempel. Sonst haben wir einige Moscheen besucht und sind viel durch die Stadt gelaufen, free-walking Touren mitgemacht und an einem pub-crawl 🙃Read more

      Sri Mahamariamman Temple

      We got an early start finding out that KL is a late start coffee and breakfast culture. Headed to the China town area where this colorful Hindu temple is located and apparently is quite typical of such temples in Sri Lanka.
      Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Hindu temple was founded in 1873 and was rebuilt in 1968, but the Raja Gopuram from the original structure was preserved and is the main attraction of this temple. The Raja Gopuram is a tower of
      sculptures in bright colors positioned above the entrance of the temple. The Sri Mahamariamman Temple.
      Raja Gopuram is in the style of Hindu temples in Southern India. The temple was originally a private shrine for the founder K. Thamboosamy Pillai and his family, but in 1920, it was opened to the general public. The temple Raja Gopuram stands 22.9 meters high in a pyramid shape with five tiers of sculptures of Hindu deities. The sculptor, S.T. Muniappa created 228 individual figures for the tower, which is painted in bright colors. The main prayer hall has a beautifully decorated ceiling and the temples three main shrines. The temple complex holds other shrines, and at the back of the temple is the inner sanctuary or garbagraham where the chief deity is kept. Mariamman is a female goddess of travel to foreign lands, and she is an incarnation of Mother Earth. She is mostly worshiped by Tamils.      Read more
