    Waiting

    March 27 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

I am again reminded how much I love traveling, but hate flying there. Between airline delays, TSA lines, and some overly conservative advice from the hotel staff, we have been sleep deprived and waiting just to get out of JFK for over 12 hours. Things will only get better from here! ✈️🌎Read more

  • Buenos Aires 101

    March 28 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

After a little bit of sleep we had a full day city tour of Buenos Aires. Visited the Recoleta cemetery with the mausoleum containing the remains of Eva Peron. Saw the obelisk, visited the food market in San Telmo and had our first Argentinian empanadas. After our tour went to Guerria for pizza. I ordered a pitcher of sangria instead of a glass, so after too much sangria, here are a bunch of a pics…….

After a short sangria induced nap, we cleaned up and went to the tango show that we were supposed to go to the first night, but couldn’t because our flight from New York was delayed. We were not sure what to expect, but the dancers were quite incredible, the live music exceeded our expectations, and the steak dinner was tender and cooked to perfection. It was a very fun evening even though we ate and drank too much yet again and didn’t get home until after our Norma bed time.

  • Food and more food

    March 29 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Day 3 : We went on a food tour in the San Telmo district. First we learned how to make mate( herbs steeped in hot water and drank through a metal straw). Next stop was a charcuterie board with meats and cheeses, & Dan had his first glass of vermouth. Next was empanadas of course, this time lamb. Main course was swiss chard fritters, fried provolone, beef schnitzel and more vermouth. After the tour we needed to walk off some calories so we browsed the Sunday craft and antique fair. Continued walking to the eco park which is a small zoo in the city of Buenos Aires, they even had a giraffe. We were still full from the food tour so ice cream for dinner. And an early bedtime.Read more

  • Ushuaia

We traveled to the most southern city in the world. This is one of four locations that you leave from on a boat to Antartica. At one point in its history it was a penal colony.

  • Wet catamaran ride on the Beagle Channel

    April 1 in Argentina ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

Today we rode the catamaran through the Beagle Chanel. It was raining pretty hard for the whole cruise. We saw whales, sea lions and lots of birds. We stayed downtown and went back to the Maritime museum. We are headed to El Calafate where we will visit Los Glaciares National Park.Read more

  • El Chatan

    April 3 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Today we ventured to El Chatin, to get our first peak at Andes mountains in Patagonia. Mother Nature cooperated with blue skies, crisp air, and warm sun. We had spectacular views of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Both seemed to defy our native understanding of what mountains look like. Several short hikes to views and waterfalls added to the experience. Although it was almost a 2 hour tour bus ride in both directions, the views were worth it. As with most spectacular nature views, it was difficult to capture the grandeur on camera.Read more

  • Largo Argentino - Mayo Spirit Trek

    April 4 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Today’s adventure started with a boat ride from Punta Bandera on Largo Argentino (the largest fresh water body in Argentina). We sailed to Bahai Toro where we went for a short and easy hike through a dense old growth rain forest that is only about 20km from the Pacific Ocean, but on the Atlantic side of the Andes mountains. The rain forest climate comes from all the moisture that is pulled from the air as it rises over the Andes mountains. Next was a waterfall, more like a cascade that dropped over 1000ft from a near by mountain. Hiking back to the boat along the rocky beach we then set sail to Cerro Negro with spectacular views of a hanging glacier and another cascading water fall. The Mountain View’s from here were breathtaking. Back on the boat, we ate the lunch we brought with us and sailed to Perito Moreno Glacier which is known for choking off the water between Brazo Rico and Brazo Mayo. In the spring there can be almost 100ft of difference in water level and when the glacier starts to melt, the water flow between the two bodies of water cause some spectacular calving. We hiked up to a near by peak for great views of the Perito Moreno Glacier and walked along a raised path (with lots of stairs) back down to the lake and back to the boat. The sail back to port was amazing with very light winds, warm sun, and bluebird skies. For dinner we went to the restaurant owned by our guide to El Chatan, and had a chance to meet his family at the restaurant. Exciting day with lots of sun, and Calafate beer!Read more

  • Vino!

    April 7 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Mendoza is famous for two things. Wine and more wine! 🍷. Today we sampled over 16 different wines at three different wineries. The last winery also included a fabulous lunch, with several different wines paired with each course. It was fabulous culinary treat, but when we were done, I was too full and too tipsy to remember what I ate or drank. After lunch we had our driver drop us off in downtown Mendoza where we toured several city parks. I even took a quick siesta on a park bench with Melissa watching over me 😴. The weather was sunny and perfect. Mendoza was clean and safeRead more

  • Empanadas

    April 8 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Yesterday we had a cooking class, we arrived in the morning and started right in. First we made bread, then three empanadas one beef, one onion and one cheese. Each flavor was folded and sealed differently to tell them apart. Dessert was a pastry made with quince jam. While the food was resting, we went to the wine tasting. We returned to have a five course meal, too much food and drink. We did not have to eat for the rest of the day. Tomorrow is a travel day, we are headed to Iguazu Falls.Read more

  • Iguazu !

    April 9 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We started very early this morning heading to the airport in Mendoza to head to our last original stop in Argentina, Puerto Iguazu, home to the famous Iguazu Falls and the most northern (and warmest) part of Argentina. Didn’t have much planned during the day so we took a walk to Hito Tres Fronteras which is a river confluence where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. We came back to the hotel for a quick swim in the pool to cool off, and then off to another Argentinian dinner at “The Argentine Experience” where we made drinks, empanadas, ate a excellent steak dinner and finished with alfajories, and sipped mata.Read more

  • Back to Buenos Aries

    April 12 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Another travel day. Bought a morning flight to Buenos Aires, checked in to our hotel, repacked, and went on a stroll through the Palermo neighborhood.

  • Santiago, Chile

    April 13 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today was a transportation day. We finished up our agenda with the planned trip to Argentina and went to the international airport in Buenos Aires to catch our 2 hour flight to Santiago. We practiced with immigration, as we are going to need to pass through immigration again in a few days when we catch our flight to New York. Unfortunately, we booked separate airlines, so we will not be able to check through from Santiago to New York. We should have plenty of time on Friday to make the connection.
After we got to Santiago, we took a shared van service to our hotel in Downtown Santiago. Once we checked in, we went out to a late lunch/early dinner at a Peruvian restaurant (continuing our “eat our way through South America” tour), and then walked through several parks and shops on the way back to the hotel.

For dinner Stefano joined us at a German restaurant, we had traditional Chilean sandwiches with thin sliced beef, tomato, avocado and mayonnaise , it was delicious.Read more
