Eagle Featival- kiss and whip chase

    October 6, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

So in this race the couples register in pairs- the man tries to kiss the women whilst she beats him off with a whip!!!.... we didn’t see one woman kissed.... but there was some ferocious beating!!!
We thought men’s rights groups may be picketing next year!!!

    Eagle Festival Day 2- am

    October 6, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

Woke a bit tired after yesterday’s excitement not sure if we were ready for more.
We got to the festival site at 8.30am, staked a spot and headed off for a walk whilst it was quiet.
K and I decided to check out the back of the hill the eagles are released from and found a path so up we went.
To cut a v long story short we ended up sitting amongst the eagle hunters as they released each other’s eagles for today’s competition - the ability of the eagles to land on a prey down in the arena.
This was incredible despite the rudeness of some terribly ignorant tourists who got in the competitors way just to get their photos. Luckily most of us were more respectful.

The Eagle Festival - day 1 post 1 of 75!

    October 5, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

The most incredible day ever. I can’t even write about it because it was so unbelievably amazing.
I will try to post the videos taken but they may be too long. We only took a handful of photos on the phone as everywhere we looked demanded 20 shots on the camera. K took just under 1000 pics just today!!!
The festival was full of horses, camels, furs, weathered faces, embroidery, eagles... and sadly tourists with huge cameras!!! What a day!!
(Started well with a vodka sprinkling tribute to Ev to help send her spirit on its way- her ashes were scattered down the Murchison river today so it was nice to send her off from Mongolia- fly free Ev )

Ulgii market and random eagle hunters!

    October 4, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

After lunch we got to wander around the local market which sold everything from glass panels to fur lined leather boots, souvenirs to knock off designer underwear.
K got groped by some man whilst Phil and Erica were buying embroidery!!
After the market we drove more than an hour out to visit an eagle hunter family. It turned out we were visiting the champion who was competing over the wkend.
On the way out we came across 4 eagle hunters coming down over the hills work their eagles on their way into town- we stopped for photos even though they were miles away.
Further on there were more!!! 4 more single eagle hunters on their horses, holding their eagles whilst riding into town for tmrw- all were v friendly and allowed us to take photos from the car.
However as we crested the hill into Sagai we came across the most amazing eagle hunter sitting having a rest..., with his eagle on the back of his motorbike!!!
His name was pronounced “what”- and we had a great 15 mins whilst Unru and the drivers chatted to him whilst we all took photos.
Erica printed out a photo of him and his eagle on her little instant printer- What”s face was a picture in itself as it lit up with delight.
Finally we moved on to the hunters family we were meant to be spending time with.

    Eagle Festival videos

    October 5, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

All day we watched the 120 competitors call their eagles down from the mountain onto their arm.
So many didn’t make it!! They circled overhead but landed outside the arena, or just buggered off straight away not to be seen. K was complaining she hadn’t got a good shot of an eagle landing. We were walking through the stalls and one landed at our feet- about 100m from where it should have landed!!
The first video gives an idea of what we were watching. It was taken late in the pm so sorry for the poor placement.
The other video was of the loviest old man and his ? Son who helped him onto his horse.

Eagle Festival Day 2 - closing ceremony

    October 6, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

K and I managed to get a prime spot for the closing ceremony despite K being hassled by British tourists to allow them to take her prime spot- twankers ( it’s our new name for travel wankers!!)

Bayan- oglii and a beautiful lake

    October 7, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

Had a slow day today. A late breakfast at 8.30am after which we thought we were heading to the lake. However we were informed at breakfast we were off to the museum at 11.30 am and had “free time” until then despite all markets and shops being closed on a Monday.
We all went for a coffee and then feigned Interest around the museum. Unru the guide was obviously over us today as she could hardly be assed to string a sentence together. She dragged us around some local stalls that were open to fill time until lunch at 1pm- seriously!
We finally got out to the promised lake at 3pm and had a blissful hour enjoying the snow capped altai mountains and glacial lake.
Then it was back into town to a look out before we were finally dropped back to the hotel at 6pm. Dinner at 7pm but i am giving it a miss due to an annoying migraine- too much excitement yesterday!!!

2am start UB to Ulgii- Kazahk county

    October 4, 2019 in Mongolia ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

What a long but great day!
Sorry for the multiple posts but too many photos from today.
We were up at 2am, checked out of Ramada and got a 2.45 am pick up for the airport. Temperature -7C!!
We were first to check in for the 05.20am flight west to Ulgii for the Eagle Festival!!
Sadly the coffee shop hadn’t turned on the coffee machine but did serve us hot chocolates which woke us up.
The 3 hour flight went quickly as we napped for some of it but managed to stay awake as we flew over the snow covered Altai Mountains - stunning!!!
Ulgii is so close to the Kazahkstan border the clocks went back an hour.
It’s was still -7C when we landed but was a clear, crisp sunny am Into the town with a population of 29,000
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ölgii_(city)
We got dropped off at our brand new hotel and had “free time” until 12.30pm ( now only 8.30am) so we found Arvin cafe and all spent an hour or so there before exploring town.
