      Ostrog Monastery

      [JJ] Our travels this morning took us from the most ramshackle train station for a country capital I've ever seen, to Ostrog, where we immediately (and accidentally) (and successfully?!?!) haggled with a taxi driver as soon as we stepped off the train. The ride took us up to 17th century orthodox Ostrog monastery, remarkably built into the cliffs. We didn't realise quite what an important religious pilgrimage site this was, as crowds flooded in to pay respect to the body of Saint Basil of Ostrog, literally lining up for the chance to kiss his preserved remains. When our turn finally came, the best we could muster was an awkward bow of respect towards his saintly casket before swiftly dipping to explore the rest of the site. Even as clueless tourists though, this was a thoroughly worthwhile visit, and felt like a place for true inner peace.Lue lisää

      Pilgrims at Ostrog

      Would you sleep under the stars at a monastery given the chance?

      Ostrog is a Serbian orthodox monastery and a site of pilgrimage. It is perched high above the valley, and deftly tucked in under the base of huge limestone cliffs. Its a spectacular location.

      The monastery provides blankets and mattresses and its free to sleep out.
      We pick our spot and set up for the night. Alain chatting to our neighbours of varying Serbian origins. After an early evening outdoor service, pilgrims start to settle for the night. We lie looking up at the night-lit monastery, the cliffs and the stars above, a gentle breeze on our faces, conscious of all those many pilgrims that have paused here over the centuries.
      The night is not long, with many up at 5am. The 6am outdoor morning service is graced with the crescent moon above and the sun about to rise. We quietly leave in the early morning as yet more pilgrims arrive.      Lue lisää

      Das Felsenkloster von Ostrog war bezaubernd und ein sehr magischer Ort.
      Wir wurden heute in den alten Mauern, bemalt mit byzantinischen Fresken, gesegnet ☘️

      Es ist weit bekannter Huldigunguns- und Wallfahrtsort. Das Klostergebäude ist eingemeißelt in einem großen auf eine Höhe von 900 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Der Aufbau began im 12. Jahrhundert.

      Das Kloster bewahrt die Reliquien des Heiligen Vasilije von Ostrog, des Wundertäters, die auch heute noch Wunder vollbringen und heilen, auf.      Lue lisää

      Ein altes Felsenkloster, das kostenlos besichtigt werden kann. Hunde sind auf dem gesamten Gelände nicht erlaubt. Das Kloster selbst ist ganz süß, muss man aber nicht gesehen haben, wenn man schon in Moldawien war.Lue lisää

      Viel zu enge Serpentinen führen uns zum Kloster Ostrog. Oder besser gesagt: nicht. Das letzte Stück wird uns mit dem Auto dann nämlich doch zu heikel und wir erklimmen den Berg lieber zu Fuß. Die anstrengende Wanderung lohnt sich aber - wir sind wirklich beeindruckt von dem in den Stein gebauten, schneeweißen Kloster. Andächtig schreiten wir durch sein Inneres und machen das eine oder andere semi-legale Foto von den Wandmosaiken.Lue lisää

      Slightly unorthodox

      Continuing up the road to the mountain of Ostroška GredaI, I found the Ostrog monastery jammed in a crevice.
      Founded by Vasilije, the Bishop of Herzegovina and later known as St. Vasilije of Ostrog, whose body is kept in a box covered with cloth and guarded by a verger, ( that is a man on the verge of sleep,) inside one off the two remaining cave chapels. As I was being closely watched by a priest I did not dare to take any pictures: it was too dim in the candlelight and looked like a pile of laundry anyway. Despite appearances, word of the miraculous healing powers of his mortal remains spread far and wide, and the monastery become a center of pilgrimage not only for Orthodox Christians but Catholics and Muslims as well.
      Much of the present monastery dates from a 1923-1926 renovation after a fire. The monastery was seriously damaged in the blaze and has been rebuilt: luckily for the monks who don't have to live in damp and draughty cells.
      Nowadays there is a lower monestary as well, leaving the upper one to sightseers. Seeing a horde of people taking photos inside one chapel, and unable to enter, I held my camera up above their heads to see what was causing the excitement. An orthodox baptism I think.      Lue lisää

      Stop bij een laatste viewpoint, must see in Montenegro: aan de rand van het Lake Skadar Nationaal Park (gemist tijdens onze panoramische route in het begin van de reis) en te bereiken via extra nauw, 180 graden draaiend kiezelbaantje. 🚗😬

      Allerlaatste stop is Ostrog Monastery, bedevaartsoord in Montenegro.. licht onvoorbereid waren we niet voldoende ‘bedekt’ 🙈      Lue lisää

      Excursie het Ostrog klooster

      Vandaag hebben wij veel te lang op de bus gewacht en dachten al dat ze ons waren vergeten! Het was niet het geval! Deze excursie was uniek, want wij gingen naar twee bestemmingen: Kotor en het Ostrog klooster.

      Onderweg naar het klooster zijn wij gestopt in Nikšič, waar wij lekker hebben gelunched. Na zo'n stevige drie gangen lunch moesten wij in onze kleine bus kruipen en een hele stijle berg omhoog. Nou... Het was warm, hoog en heel veel draaien. Rik had er geen lol in, want zijn maag vindt alle die 'kermis' activiteiten niet leuk. Het duurde veel te lang, maar eindelijk stonden wij er net als de honderden andere mensen. Vooral veel gelovigen die er LOPEND kwamen om in de open lucht bij het klooster te kunnen overnachten en deel te nemen aan zondagse mis. Na zo'n reis wordt je van zelfsprekend gelovig, want je bent kapot!

      Dit was dus het pelgrimsoord van Orthodoxen, Katholieken en Moslims. Het klooster van Ostrog behoort tot de meest bezochte bedevaartsoorden op de Balkan. Van alle uithoeken van de wereld komen pelgrims naar deze heilige plaats. Zowel Orthodoxen, Katholieken en Moslims geloven dat de gemummificeerde overblijfsels van Vasilius wonderbaarlijke en helende krachten hebben.

      Het klooster Ostrog is eigenlijk een samenstel van twee kloosters waarvan het bovenste op 900 m, in de bergwand ingelijfd, ligt. Wat een prachtig uitzicht vanuit het orthodoxe kerkklooster!

      Voordat wij naar binnen mochten, kregen wij een speedcursus Orthodox zijn. Bij de Oosters-Orthodoxe Kerk is de volgorde van kruisteken: hoofd - borst - rechterschouder - linkerschouder. Waarbij duim, wijsvinger en middelvinger samen worden gebracht als symbool van de Drie-eenheid (vader, zoon en de heilige geest in een). Het kruisteken wordt als regel gemaakt aan het begin of het einde van een gebed; soms ook bij het passeren van een heiligenafbeelding of een kerkgebouw en daarnaast in de Orthodoxe Kerk altijd bij het begroeten van een icoon. En je mag nooit met je rug naar het altaar toe weglopen. Dus draaien en met de rug naar buiten toe achteruit lopen.

      Er waren echt prachtige iconen te bewonderen. De gemummificeerde hand in de kapel zou volgens de legendes de hand van Johannes de Doper zijn. Deze mochtten wij even kort schudden 😂... Grapje! Nou ja, alleen de doodkist mogen aanraken, want het brengt geluk en gezondheid.

      Rik en ik waren dankbaar dat wij onze stevige lunch binnen hebben gehouden, de gevaarlijke, smalle bergwegetje en lange rij bij de ingang (in de zon) mochten overleven. Ook veel gezondheid en lang leven voor onze familie en vrienden gewenst en met de rug naar de deur toe naar buiten gekropen. Zonder onze koppen te stoten aan de lage deurpost bij het achteruitlopen wat niet iedereen van onze groep is gelukt. Rik was vergeten te kruisen en ik deed van de zenuwen verkeerd kruisen, op zijn Katholieks - met mijn rechte hand naar mijn rechterschouder toe. Hopelijk werd de Heilige niet kwaad op ons.       Monastero di Ostrog

      Visita al monastero di Ostrog,nell'entroterra ,edificato conto una parete di roccia verticale il bianco monastero ,rappresenta il cuore spirituale della comunità montenegrina ,nonchè una meta popolare di pellegrinaggio.Giro di un tratto del Parco Nazionale del lago Skadar che ospita la più grande riserva di uccelli d'Europa ed è il più grande lago della penisola balcanica. Il lago è così chiamato in quanto sull'estremo sud-orientale si trova la città di Scutari ( Skadar in serbo, Shkodër in albanese). Il lago è situato al confine fra l'Albania e il Montenegro, a quest'ultimo appartengono circa i 2/3 della superficie.Per poi arrivare in uno dei suoi villaggi nascosti Rijeka Crnojevica,si tratta di un luogo remoto e incantevole raggiungibile percorrendo strade secondarie.La caratteristica principale è il grazioso ponte in pietra ad arco costruito dal principe Danilo nel 1854.Lue lisää

      Ostrog Monastery, MNE

      Ostrog is a Serbian Orthodox Monastery dedicated to St. Basil of Ostrog who died and whose bones are kept here as relics over which the faithful pray. The monastery was founded in the 17th century, but the current look dates to the 1920s when it was rebuilt after a fire. The 2 cave churches here were spared by the fire and retain the frescos painted on the natural rock walls and ceilings. Unfortunately, photography was prohibited.
      The 1st picture looks along the building where offices, monastic cells, etc. are located. The main church in the 2nd picture is not visible just beyond the far end. The 3rd picture are a few of the mosaics created directly on the rocks outside one of the cave churches.
      The last 2 pictures are of the view from the monastery. This place is way up on the side of a vertical cliff, and while there is a road up here, my stomach assured me that the narrow road, cut into the cliff, is not one I would care to drive or even walk along. Yet, the monastery and the view are worth the trip.      Lue lisää
