      Tofo- Ocean Safari

      Another day, another safari. This time, we’re off out on the ocean (Indian version) from the small town of Tofo. Everyone is looking for Whale Sharks (and you are offered a free trip the next day if you don’t see any), but since we’d already seen them in Tanzania, we were on the lookout for dolphins and manta rays.

      It was somewhat ironic, then, that we had gone about 5 minutes out from shore and came across a whale shark. Not that we are complaining- they are incredible animals, and the visibility was much better this time around. Also, we had picked up a knock-off GoPro (GoAmateur?) for $38 in Maputo, so managed to get some footage. We swam with the shark for a good 15/20 minutes, and managed to get quite close.

      From the boat, we also saw a Portuguese Man of War (or Bluebottle Jellyfish). These things really pack a punch, and the tentacles trail quite far, so from then on out, I keep a vigilant eye on the surface.      Read more

      Surfin’ Mozambique

      Surf’s up! Apparently... We don’t know too much about surfing, so we’ve booked into a lesson. Tofo is great for beginners, as the waves are relatively small, and there are no rocks or coral to bash your head on when you inevitably take a tumble. The only annoyance is the portuguese man o’ war (bluebottle), which can drift into the bay.

      Whilst we are having our lesson, we see big fish in the waves, and small flying fish seem to emulate us by falling out of the breakers. We also keep a close eye on the ocean, hoping to spot a dolphin or two- however, given our dolphin luck, our sightings remain at 0.

      After the surf lesson, we relax to regain strength in our arms. Later, we head down to the beach , and see fisherman drag in a MASSIVE TIGER SHARK. It’s quite disturbing to see such a magnificent creature having been speared through the eye and in dragged ashore. Our friends from the hostel later see it butchered in the shade next to the beach. They ask the fisherman what it is, and he just replies “a big fish”. Sure buddy. Apparently, fishing for sharks can carry a prison sentence of 24 years, but this must not be enforced, as the shark was being cut apart on the busy, police-patrolled tourist beach. You can’t find shark meat on any menu or in any market- the only reason the fishermen kill the sharks in for the fins, which can be sold for $40, and will be sent to East Asian countries.

      It’s very disconcerting to see this practice undertaken so brazenly, but it seems that so long as the economic incentive for fins is there, the killing of sharks will continue. Reflecting on this bizzare encounter we enjoy the sunset and chow down on some fresh prawn curry.      Read more

      Day 1

      Reise und Ankunft in Mosambik

      Von Zürich aus können wir glücklicherweise in der Business class nach Johannesburg fliegen. Da es ein Nachtflug ist, gönnen wir uns nach dem Nachtessen ein schläfchen :) Ausgeruht kommen wir überpünktlich in Johannesburg an. Wir konnten in Zürich das Gepäck gleich so aufgeben, dass es bis nach Vilanculos durchgecheckt wird... Eigentlich. Dazu später aber mehr.
      In Johanesburg war nicht sonderlich viel los und wir mussten auch weite wege gehen bis zum Gate. Deshalb ging alles sehr Fix. Hier sind wir dann in einen kleinen Jet gestiegen der auch als Privatflieger von Leo DiCaprio durchgehen könnte... Es waren auch nur ca 20 Passagiere an Board. Der Flug war kurz und schmerzlos.
      Pünktlich sind wir in Vilanculos gelandet und haben gewusst dass es nun einwenig dauern würde, da wir das Visum nicht vorneweg gemacht haben.
      Wir haben aber vorbildlich alle Unterlagen bereits ausgefüllt und ausgedruckt, aber das hat hier niemand interessiert. Wir mussten also nochmals alles auf einen fötzel schreiben, fotomachen etc.
      Da es ein kleiner Flughafen ist, haben wir auch gleich gesehen, dass unser Gepäck nirgends steht..."vielleicht haben sie hier noch eine andere gepäckhalle" dachte ich mir... NID MAU VILLECH!
      Nach der Einreise hat man uns ins Büro geholt und dort waren auch gleich 3 andere die ihr Gepäck nicht erhalten haben 😩
      Ja... nun sind wir hier aber ohne unser Gepäck. Ich meine dort haben wir alles drin was wir brauchen: Medis, Kleider, Elektroshit, Tauchsauchen...Zum Glück hat unser Host bei der Unterkunft, mir ein paar Badehosen geliehen, sonst wäre ich bei 30grad verdampft.☺️
      Hoffe das Gepäck kommt morgen mit dem nächsten Flug, ansonsten wird das seeehr trocken hier... Morgen ist Sonntag und die Läden sind zu. Aber eine Flasche Wein haben wir uns noch gegönnt😅      Read more

      Day 5

      Insel Day Trip

      Wir wurden um 0800 mit dem Speedboot abgeholt um unser Insel Day Trip zu starten. Zusammen mit einem anderen Paar fuhren wir noch zu einer anderen Unterkunft wo wir noch zwei weitere aufgeladen hätten, diese konnten jedoch aus Gründen nicht... Wir dachten dass wir nun einen private Day haben werden... NOPE! Eine 6 köpfige Familie und ein creepy "ich-muss-mich-selbstfinden-deshalb-fahre-ich-8monate-mit-dem-velo-durch-afrika" sind auf das kleine boot gekommen.
      Jäh nuu...
      Wir fuhren zur gegenüberliegenden Insel Bazaruto, die fahrt dauerte knapp 50min. Dort angekommen hatten wir Zeit für uns und um auf die krassen Dünen zu gehen. Der Sand war mindestens 1000grad😵 aber auch schön. Danach haben wir noch einwenig gebädelt und geschwadert bis es dann um 1200 frisch zubereitetes Mittagessen gab.
      Wenig später sind wir noch auf die zweite Insel gefahren. Ilha de Benguerra... Fast wie auf den Malediven hats ausgehen. Weisser Strand, klares Meer und, wenn die goofen nicht gewesen wären, unglaubliche Ruhe☺️
      Hier wurde natürlich nochmals eine runde gebädelt bis wir zu den Flamingos fuhren. Diese waren aber sooo weit weg. Der creepy Typ musste sich aber beweisen dass er ein Hero war und sekelte durch das bisi warme wasser zu den Flamingos. Blöd nur dass die Tiere schneller sind als ein Mensch der durchs Wasser läuft... Aber Heey, er kann allen auf der Reise sagen "ich bin den Flamingos hinterher gelaufen"
      Nach erneuten 50min sind wir wieder an unserem Strand angekommen und haben einen sehr erholsamen und schönen Ausflug erleben dürfen 👍      Read more

      Day 9

      Tofinho Beach

      Wir sind da... Seit mittlerweile 3 Tagen sind wie in Tofo und es ist ein Traum. Wir hausen direkt am Strand in einem mega tollen Haus. Einwenig dekadent, aber man gönnt sich ja sonst nichts.
      In Tofo gibts weniger Attraktionen als noch in Vilanculos, aber das wussten wir und sind die letzten zwei Tage Tauchen gegangen. Wir wollten Whalesharks sehen, aber bisher blieb uns das verwehrt. Denoch hatten wir mit Peri-Peri Divers 4 schöne Tauchgänge. Wir waren überrascht wie farbig es hier unter Wasser ist. TOLL. Ich habe hier meinen ersten Leopard Shark gesehen und ein mini mini SeaHorse!

      Nun sind wir jedoch mega in Sorge betreffend der Heimreise. Wir sind aktuell am schauen dass wir irgend wie noch einen Flug nach Zürich bekommen. Das heisst zwar dass wir alles frühzeitig abbrechen müssen, aber immerhin noch nach Hause kommen.

      Simons Town Dive 6

      After spending considerable surface time searching for whale sharks with no luck, we descended into Simon's Town. A fun easier dive with the usual suspects including rays, flatworm, bearded scorpion fish, huge spiny lobster, crocodile fish, nudis, white mouth moray eel. Considered heading out for an ocean safari in the hope of whalesharks but our tummies couldn't cope. Did absolutely nothing all afternoon and skipped dinner. Nick was in bed before sunset.Read more

      Giants Castle Dive 5

      After waking up quesy and losing our dinner from last night we managed to get on the boat and back out to Giants. The giants weren't there today and there was an unexpected reverse current that we swam against for the whole dive. We still saw lots of cool things including a leaf scorpion fish just flapping around, big schools of fish, big lionfish, fish hiding in crevices trying to escape the current, eels and lots of cleaner shrimp.Read more

      Down day in Tofo

      Unfortunately too windy to dive. Instead we enjoyed a nice relaxed day checking out Tofo Beach. Enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and our private resort then made our way to Happy's for a delicious vegan lunch. I also enjoyed a lovely yoga class that I walked up the beach to in my bare feet. Swam in the ocean, read books and just hung about until dinner back at our favourite restaurant with Freddy the waiter.Read more

      Mikes Cupboard Dive 4

      After being treated to bottlenose dolphins playing in the waves during our surface interval, we finally decided on a shallow dive. Mike's cupboard didn't disappoint with hundreds of nudibranchs, harlequin shrimp, crocodile fish, too much to mention. Liv is brilliant at finding things for us.Read more

      Dive 3 Giants Castle

      November 19, 2022 in Mozambique ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

      Awesome dive again. 2 giant mantas with a spectacular close encounter for the second one. During our safety stop we had 3 devil rays circling just below us. Lots of other things including ornate Eagle ray, ornate spiny lobster, Golden trevally school and honeycomb moray eels.
      The weather wasn't perfect but we got rewarded for our efforts and it was just us and the dive staff, Liv, Rea and Sophie so we felt very safe.      Read more
