    Pfadfinderzeltplatz Mangmühle

    Heute ging es 6 Uhr aus den Federn. Auf Grund unseres höchst brisanten Schlafplatzes wollten wir schnell wieder loskommen. Weiter die alte Eisenbahnstrecke Isny-Kempten entlang. Es lief wie von selbst. Frühstück in Kempten im Hofgarten in der Sonne. Dann eine weitere Bergetappe ins Ostalgäu hinein, die verschneiten Gipfen der Alpen stehts zu unserer Rechten. Ja, Bayern hat schon schöne Landschaften zu bieten. Nur fährt hier kaum einer mehr normal Rad. Die E-Bike-Quote lag bei gefühlten 80%! Auf unserem Zeltplatz sind wir heute die einzigen. Dort steht ein Haus des Pfadfindervereins. Die Türe ist offen, Strom zum laden der GPS-Batterien gibt es, sonst ist keiner da, nur ein Schild mit Benimmregeln. Wir benehmen uns. Das Wasser ist abgedreht, also kommt heute der Nachfolger der Tropical Shower aus Barcelona zum ersten Mal zum Einsatz. Wasser gibt es im angrenzenden Stausee ja genug - Eiskaltes, zu Sarahs Freude ;-) Und dann nackig auf der Wiese in der Abendsonne zum Trocknen herumspringen, herrlich, wie einst zu DDR-Zeiten im Kindergarten :-)

    Wash day!!

    The small pleasures are the best . Field-fresh strawberries direct from the producers and wash day!

    Thankfully we survived the night at the scout campsite. It was a lovely location but the open hut that smelt like it hadnt been used in years was slightly creepy. (I've watched too many "cabin in the woods" style horror films!). Its still fairly cold at night and we're waking up in the morning with so much condensation in the tent that we need to dry everything out before packing it..or at least stopping somewhere nice (like the palace park in Kempten yesterday) to dry it out. Hopefully its just the seasons and that it'll get drier as we get into summer. (Peter is finding it very amusing to blame sweatiness and incontinence for the daily need to dry our the tent...it's not!) We've changed the orientation that we sleep in the tent to see if it helps ventilation, heads at the door end, as well as spanning a bungee at the back of the tent to hold it aloft somewhat. Trials of the road eh!

    The day has also come for me to buy some "practical" sandals to cycle in! Acquired in the children's department of Kern shoe shop in Schongau. Peter is already encouraging me to wear them with socks 😀    Read more

    Leg burner Day/Bein-brenner Tag!

    Its never a good idea to look at the hill profile of a route the day before you do it.. but feeling cosy with a pizza and a beer in hand last night, we chanced a look. 3 big bad boys today, plus some added bonus hills; an absolute killer right at the start, a cheeky late morning nasty and some rolling bumps this afternoon.

    The morning stage met a road block into the forest path early on. A bavarian lady on a bike plus 2 other chaps pulled up behind us as we pored over the map, she reliably informed us that someone was hit on the head by a falling tree last week and promptly turned around to follow the massive diversion (Hmmmm) . The two guys also followed suit. We decided to risk it because we couldn't hear any tree work, so scuttled through the cordon and hoped not to meet the forester. We didn't...and thereby saved a wedge of time on the busy road.

    The rest of the day was;

    Drinking.
    Chocolate.

    A sneaky hidden extra hill.

    Bakery van. Pretzel power up.

    HAPPY 1000km DAY!!!!

    The simple life, camping, nature, 1 pot meals...is wonderful.
    Hills aren't so bad, its just an art of pace and trying to utilise a downhill to go up, if they coincide.

    Ja, 1000 km, so schnell sind die vorüber. Die Aufwärmung neigt sich somit langsam dem Ende ;-) In den letzten Tagen im Algäu haben wir wohl mehr glückliche Kühe auf Wiesen als Menschen gesehen. Heute bei einer Vorbeifahrt einen halboffenen Stall. Die Tier lagen in ihrer Sch**** und sahen aus wie tot, abartig. Der Wetterbericht prophezeit uns ein Rennen mit dem Gewitter, das aus Westen kommt. Don't panic, das wär nicht das erste Mal ;-) Ach ja, morgen beginnt meine Entzugstherapie für Ritter Sport - grausam, schon der Gedanke daran... Nur noch 4 Stücke pro Tag.     Ausrüstung Teil 1 - Software

    In dieser Artikelserie möchten wir vorstellen, mit welcher Ausrüstung wir unsere Reise bestreiten und was für Tipps und Kniffe wir entwickelt haben.

    Ja richtig, in diesem Teil geht es um Software. Ohne wäre unsere Reise deutlich schwieriger. Wir folgen im Wesentlichen Tracks in Form von GPX-Dateien, die vorher erstellt wurden und dann auf ein Navigationssystem geladen wurden. Man teilt die Reise in Abschnitte ein mit Start- und Endpunkten (Städte...) die sich auf einer Karte leicht finden lassen. Wir benutzten dann die Website www.openrouteservice.org die auf den OpenStreetMaps aufsetzt. Dort kann man mit Filtern darauf Einfluss nehmen, wie die Route Zwischen Start- und Endpunkt verlaufen soll. Außerdem enthalten die exportierten Dateien Höheninformationen, was sehr hilfreich zum späteren Abschätzen der Tagesziele ist. An dieser Stelle möchten wir der riesigen Gemeinschaft Freiwilliger danken, die die Welt kartographieren und denen, die den darauf basierenden Routingservice entwickelt haben und bereitstellen. Es funktioniert tadellos und die bisher gefahrenen Tracks waren wirklich super.

    Die oben beschriebene Prozedur kann man notfalls auch auf einem Smartphone unterwegs durchführen. Es ist darauf zu achten, dass man einen Texteditor dabei hat. Ich nehme Turbo-Editor. Manche Navigationssysteme benötigen den Name-Tag in der GPX-Datei, der beim Export von o.g. Website leider nicht vorhanden ist. Diesen muss man dann nachträglich einfügen. Auch ist erforderlich, dass das Smartphone USB-OTG unterstützt und sich das Navigationssystem wie ein Massenspeicher verhält. Dann hat man mit kleinsten Geräten unterwegs alle Möglichkeiten.

    Ein weiteres nützliches Progamm ist OsmAnd. Es nutzt ebenfalls die Karten von OSM. Diese können auch heruntergeladen werden und stehen somit immer zur Verfügung. Das ist praktisch zum Auffinden von Unterkünften, Einkaufsmöglichkeiten etc. Mit OsmAnd können auch GPX-Dateien erstellt und geöffnet werden. Die Routing-Fähigkeiten können openroutservice allerdings nicht das Wasser reichen und es stehen keine Höheninformationen zur Verfügung.    Read more

    1000km = chain change day! The "old" chains have become 5mm longer after around 77 hours of riding time so far. We plan to change them every 1000km to keep the level of wear and tear evened out rather than riding them into the ground.

    We were making good headway into our day's milage when the weather completely turned. It was a hot, breezy morning where even taking the tent down at 9am was a sweaty affair. Suncream on, passing children swimming in rivers.... we stopped to buy groceries for the night and in 15 minutes the sky was black and the wind was raging. We had heard in weather reports that a storm was expected in the late evening, so had hoped we'd make the campsite in time as we had successfully raced off the storm from last week.

    The wind got so strong it was literally buffeting the bikes sideways when riding on the road. With so much weight they aren't the easiest to handle in perfect conditions, let alone in rain and wind. Watching Peter wobble about infront of me was worrying and we still had 20km to go to the campsite.

    We decided to stop in the next village to look into Plan B..as if waiting for 2 weary bikepakers, we came across a huge glass bus shelter with comfy sofa seats! A good place to spend the next half hour exceeding our daily chocolate quota (on account of the emergency conditions!) And looking for accommodation options. Thankfully the cheapest was also the nearest. Seeing a plank of wood blow out of someones trailer, into the air and then into the road 30m behind was all the justification we needed not to cycle anymore and to seek a warm retreat!

    A few nights ago we were inthe woods listening to the night owls, today we have a stuffed one outside our room!! Arrhhhh!!

    So happy to not be out in that rain and wind tonight, regarless that the hotel looks like something from "The Shining"!    Read more

    Camping / Zelten

    Nachdem wir gestern an der Alz in einen Sturm gerieten und sicherheitshalber einen Landgasthof in Feichten aufsuchen, sind wir heute sehr ausgeruht in den Tag gestartet. Das Streckenprofil prophezeite Gutes. Tatsächlich vergingen die 82 km heute wie im Flug. Erst entlang der Salzach, wo die Deutsch-Österreichische Grenze verläuft. Dann entlang der Inn. Auf dem Weg lag Braunau, die Geburtsstadt des... äh ja, lassen wir das ;-) Es gab zwei Schmerzberge und einen komplexgeplagten Mittfünfziger, der uns überholte, dann langsamer wurde, sodass wir ihn wieder überholten, was er als Herausforderung ansah und tierisch nervte. Ja, es gibt Tage, da sitzt das Pfefferspay in meiner Tasche sehr locker ;-)
    Die schneebedeckten Gipfel der Alpen, die in den letzten Tagen auf unserer Reise durch das Algäu und Oberbayern stets zu unserer Rechten lagen, sind nun endgültig verschwunden. Wir kommen der Donau wieder entgegen, in deren Tal wir uns morgen weiter flussabwärts bewegen werden.    Read more

    Ausrüstung Teil 2 - Elektronik

    In diesem Teil werden wir vorstellen, welche elektronischen Geräte wir auf unserer Reise mitführen und für welchen Zweck, sie dienlich sind.

    Da wir wie im Software-Teil erwähnt Smartphone und Navigationssystem benutzen, ist eine Stromversorgung fern ab von Steckdosen essentiell. Dafür haben wir ein Solarmodul von GoalZero. Das liefert 5 V an einem USB-Ausgang oder 12 V an einer KFZ-Dose, die sich aber auch leicht durch einen anderen Steckverbinder ersetzen lässt. Die Leistung beträgt in beiden Fällen 5 W. Auf dem Rad befestigt, erzeugt man damit an sonnigen Tagen mehr Strom, als man gebrauchen kann. Auf eines muss man dabei jedoch achten. Der angeschlossene Verbracher, muss mit der sich ständig ändernden verfügbaren Stromstärke umgehen können, denn man fährt ständig durch Schatten, die mehr oder weniger groß sind. Mein Samsung XCover3 z.B. läd bereits bei bewölkten Himmel, kann also auch den kleinsten Ladestrom nutzen. Sarahs S4 kann nur ordentlich geladen werden, wenn es eingeschaltet ist. Im ausgeschalteten Zustand wird die Aktivierung des Ladens sonst durch ein Vibrationssignal bestätigt. Das Akku kann sich damit also durchaus mehr entleeren, als er geladen wird, wenn das ständig passiert. Um die NiMH Akkus des Navis und den Li-Ionen Akku der Kamera zu laden haben wir ein Universalladegerät von Unipal, dass sich mit 12 V betreiben lässt. Leider habe ich vorher die oben erwähnte Problematik nicht getestet. Bei Unterschreitung der Mindestspannung stürzt es einfach ab und setzt den Ladevorgang nicht selbstständig fort. Ein sinnvoller Einsatz bleibt also ist also nur mit Netzadapter oder ununterbrochener Sonnenstrahlung möglich.

    Zur Dokumentation haben wir eine Panasonic Lumix DMC- FT25. Sie ist sparsam, stoßfest, wasserdicht und mit 32 GB an Speicherkarten für rund 10000 Bilder gut. Mit einem USB-OTG Kabel kann man mit einem Smartphone direkt darauf zugreifen.

    Zum Navigationssystem, dem Garmin etrex 30x. An dieser Stelle möchte ich meinem Schwager Andreas nochmal recht herzlich für dieses Gerät danken. Denn wie im Teil 1 bereits erwähnt, erspart man sich damit jegliches Kartenmaterial und ständiges Anhalten zur Orientierung. Betreibt man es unter Ausnutzung aller möglichen Sparmaßnahen halten die zwei Panasonic eneloop Zellen etwa vier Tage. Man kann es mittels USB Anschluss betreiben, aber nicht laden.

    An Energiespeichern haben wir insgesamt 2 kleine Powerbanks mit jeweils 2200 mAh Kapazität, 8 NiMH Akkus und ein Notfallhandy mit 3,5 Ah Akku, das sich ebenfalls als Powerbank, Radio, Taschenlampe und Wecker benutzen lässt. Unsere Kopflampen und ein Satz Fahrradbeleuchtung betreiben wir mit Alkalibatterien.    Read more

    Jochenstein

    Wir sind nun an der letzten Ecke der Deutschen Grenze angekommen, schlafen aber auf Österreichischem Boden.

    Nach einem ausgiebigen Frühstück haben wir es heute ruhig angehen lassen. Den Inn hinuter nach Passau gab es unerwartet viele kurze Anstiege. Es wollte kein richtiger Fluss zustande komme. Außerdem sind die Österreichischen Radwege größtenteils mit ziemlich groben Kieselsteinen ausgebaut, der einen ziemlich hohen Rollwiederstand hat. Die Macher waren wohl keine Radfahrer.

    Nach 40 km in Passau angekommen haben wir beschlossen, nur noch etwas über 20 km weiter die Donau hinunter zu fahren, da danach auf einer längeren Strecke, zumindest laut OSM, kein Zeltplatz zu finden ist. Passau ist sehr schön, was hier allerdings bei Hochwasser abgeht, wage ich mir garnicht auszumalen. Die Wassermassen die hier von Inn und Donau zusammenlaufen beidrucken jedenfalls sehr.

    Sarah interessiert sich brennend für die Technik der Wasserkraftwerke entlang der Donau, die ich ihr morgen ausgiebig erklären werden ;-)

    Das Tal der Donau ist hier ziemlich eng und sehr tief. Man fährt nicht mal eben heraus ins Nachbardorf. Aber der Radweg ist hier wieder 1A.

    Noch 360 km ist der Weg bis Bratislava. Dann ist das Gefühl der Heimat doch irgendwie nahe zu sein wohl endgültig vorüber und wir beginnen blinde Flecken auf unserer Karte, auszumalen und mit Erlebnissen zu füllen.    Read more

    Jochenstein (English)

    We're now preparing to say goodbye to Germany as we enter chapter 5 of our GPS tracks heading through Linz in Austria to Bratislava in Slovakia. We enjoyed the luxury of a picnic bench alongside our pitch at "Camping Panorama" and had a long slow breakfast of beans on german bread toast before having a quite chilled Sunday heading through Passau.

    The route took us along the river Inn through the valley which eventually joined the Danube at Passau. The Austrian cycle routes are pretty challenging in terms of the terrain and navigation consisting of mainly loose gravel which is pretty unstable for a weighty bike on corners and descents. The route signposting has also been pretty unfortunate at times; namely concerning signs which look to be pointing uphill.... 15 sweaty minutes later we realise it should have been a "straight ahead" arrow! 😅

    The latter part of yesterday's route leaving Passau was very scenic in the winding Danube valley, thousands of trees either side. Occasionally a small house pops up to highlight how forested this area is.

    Tonight's campsite was a tiny piece of land with 5 permanent caravans and a handful of tourers. As usual, our curious neighbours watched us busying around our camp with our now well-rehearsed routine and of course asked where we were going 😅    Read more

    Ok, so I take back some of my critique of the Austrian cycle networks. The Danube cycle track from just outside Passau (Jochenstein) to (approx) Linz is a DREAM. Absolute cycling heaven.

    Wide flat asphalt. So easy to follow. The views down the valley were fantastic. The Danube really is a huuuge body of water and would lend itself well to some multi-lane rowing racing ;)

    The first challenge of the day was the power station /bridge we had to cross. 90 steps up + 2 x well-laden touring bikes +90 steps down = unloading and reloading and about 20 minutes to move forward 150m. 😅

    We also had the pleasure of a bike-ferry crossing. For 2 Euros a guy with a boat with a cabin full of schnaps took us and our bikes across the river.

    Melk - keep on rolling

    Nach einer sehr erholsamen Nacht nahe Linz ging es heute nur die Donau hinunter. Vorbei an herrlichen Biotopen an den Ufern, die viel Interessantes für Aug und Ohr bereit halten. Die großen Güterschiffe fahren flussabwärts etwa 24 km/h haben wir heraus gefunden. Schlösser und Kirchen sieht man ständig an den ufernahen Städten auf Hügeln thronen. So mussten wir für unserer Mittagspause dann doch noch einen kleinen Berg erklimmen; Wallsee hieß der kleine Ort. Er vermittelte ein wenig das Flair einer Westernstadt, alles auf einer sehr breiten Straße, die auch den Marktplatz repräsentiert. Es fehlte an nichts, obwohl der Ort bestimmt nur 2000 Seelen beherbergt. Als es weiter ging, mussten wir nach einer halben Stunde feststellen, dass wir einen Verlust zu beklagen haben. Der P hat fahrlässiger Weise eine seiner Taschen offen gelassen... Nach einer halben Stunde erfolgloser Suche entschied die Münze, dass die Fahrt fortgesetzt wird. So sind wir nach 108 km in Melk angekommen. Hier sind bestimmt 7 weitere Radtouristen auf dem Zeltplatz. Ein heftiger Gewitterguss wärend des Aufbaus des Zeltes sorgte kurz für Aufregung. Das zugehörige Gasthaus hat unsere Gaumen dann mit Gemüsestrudel und Kuchen verwöhnt. An der Hauswand sind Hochwassermarken angebracht, die erschreckende Höhen zeigen. Die Donau scheint mit ihren 100 bis 200 Metern Breite auch so schon sehr schwer überwindbar. Die Hochwasser machen aus ihr aber eine Bestie.

    Rain, Ants, Flies, Rain, Castles....

    Today we slept through our alarm, the sound of rain lulling us back to sleep (subconsciously not wanting to face the reality of packing up a wet tent!)

    Our next surprise was our new housemates, a whole troop of ants had sought refuge in our front porch. Poor little soggy ants. Thankfully they hadn't helped themselves to our breakfast so we peacefully evicted them.

    The rain then played some more games with us. We managed to get some of the tent dry and ready to be packed when the next deluge of rain fell. Rain jackets on, we got on with it anyway, helpfully ticked to death by flies as we tried to pack.

    The next decision of the day - sweating in a rain jacket or getting wet and hoping to dry out!😅

    The Danube cycleway continued as before with its sweeping curved valleys, castles on the hilltops and friendly community of biker-pilgrims. Today with the added bonus of cycling through a vineyard and a poppyfield.

    We decided to camp in Zwetschendorf which has a very amenable community- owned campsite (cheaper prices than many of the big campsites) and just 3 x pods of cycle tourists here including us.    Read more

    Stopfenreuth Zeltwiese

    So Österreich, bald wird abgerechnet. Unseren Gemeindezeltplatz haben wir heute überraschend früh verlassen können. Wir hatten die Absicht, dann gleich etwas Schönes zum Frühstück kaufen zu können. Doch dann ka den Zeitlosen die grausame Realität in die Quere - Feiertag, alles hat zu. Eine gnädige Frau bereitete uns dann doch noch ein stärkendes Frühstück, obwohl wir eine Stunde zu früh waren.

    Ein Lauf blockierte Teile des Donauradwegs, dem wohl alle Einwohner der umliegenden Städe folgten. Denn es herrschte gähnende Leere, überall. Sogar viele Gastronomien waren geschlossen.

    Dann war es heute so weit, wir erreichten Wien. Was soll ich sagen, ich versuche fair zu bleiben. Bei grauem Himmel ist wohl jede Großstadt nicht so toll. Kommt man, so wir auf dem Europaradweg 6 an und verlässt die Stadt auf diesem auch wieder, dann täte man besser daran, sie zu umfahren. Am Anfang ist es nur dreckig. Dann fährt man kilometerlang unter Hochstraßen und Autobahnen. Schließlich kann man einen Abstecher in das winzige historische Zentrum machen. In der Stadtansicht dominieren allerdings hässliche, glasverkleidete Hochhäuser; die kann man auch in Frankfurt am Main haben. Klassisches, gepflegtes Erscheinungsbild? Fehlanzeige. Fährt man dann hinaus, muss man durch eine Art Slum, ja Slum, mitten auf dem Radweg. Stinkende, Grillfleisch fressende Massen, die sich um Benimmregeln einen Dreck scheren. Man muss in Schrittgeschwindigkeit Slalom fahren - wohlgemerkt auf dem Donauradweg. Es hilft nur die Hupe, denn Deutsch versteht dort keiner. Das und genau das ist einer Gründe, warum es in Österreich eine erstarkende Recht gibt - Schade. Die Holzofenpizza war das Beste von Wien.

    Der Rest des Tages war unspektakulär. Er endete nach 96 km mit einem scheinbar ewigem, schnurgeradem Abschnitt auf dem Schutzdamm der Donauauen nach Orth.

    Vienna - PacMan Day!! WackaWackaWacka

    Today was going to be bakery morning day. With rumbling stomachs we packed up our gear in slick time and made our way through the empty village streets to the bakery and spa shop in our GPS.(we noticed we can cycle much better on a heavy breakfast than we can on more regular light meals/ snacks in the morning).

    Not a soul in sight. As we had passed a nuclear power plant en route to last night's campsite, I did wonder if something had happened overnight ....😅

    The shops opening times were clearly displayed and we walked up and down the door sensors a few times to check we weren't imagining things in our hungry state. The penny dropped when Peter's dad sent a message wishing us a happy bank holiday from the day before! Ooopss.

    Like a pacman in search of food we made our way along the cycle path noting each of the "snack bar 200m" signs that there was an abundance of. Strangely for a bank holiday, all were closed....

    We eventually found an open one in a guesthouse where we were able to buy a breakfast platter, despite arriving one hour before opening time.

    Feeling energised, we made our way to Vienna. Being a pinnacle city on the Danube cycle route we both found it hugely disappointing. Lacking charm and character, the centre surrounding the Danube was a concrete jungle, full of grafitti tags. We were glad to use the opportunity to buy a Woodfired pizza and get out into the countryside again.

    Tonight is a wildcamp-esque site. A designated camp ground but no facilities, but its free and we're the only people camping here. There's someone else with a dog across the other side of the field, he's half in camo-gear so I can't see him. Just a red top! ;) Not sure if he's staying though.

    Bratislava - 1000 miles!

    Shortly after setting off this morning, we had our 1000 x mile anniversary! (1609 or so km). As our duo is riding in part under the English flag, it was only right to celebrate it!

    We breakfasted on the road and then crossed into SLOVAKIA! Country number 5, and onwards into Bratislava. Forget Vienna, its all about Bratislava!! A small bustling city with a diverse cross-section of restaurants, wine shops, boutiquey gift shops under the backdrop of a medieval walled city. You can see most of the main points of interest in about an hour with a mix of biking and walking. The tell-tale signs of eastern block arctitecture remain, but on the whole the city is dominated with quaint older buildings and features.

    We then carried on our route 30-40km North into the real Slovakia. This is where we waved goodbye to well-paved cycleways and became acquainted with concrete plate roads, potholed-to-death main roads and sandy minor roads. Oh. La. La. Oh and the navigation app has translated street names into German which is nothing like how they are in Slovak!

    To ride comfortably you need fat fat tyres, solid suspension and a good sports bra. Getting 20 meters down a "country lane" we decided to turn around and try the main road instead. Sliding out on sand with a heavy bike is pretty taxing when the road is 1k+ long...!

    On the upside we can now afford nuts again!! Woo! (€4-7 for a small pack in Austria) And we can buy baked bread without it feeling like a treat for 4x less than Austria!

    We're currently on a campsite adjacent to a hotel. Stepping into the hotel to register was like a journey to the 70s. Wood panelling everywhere and a huge deep tube tv. East-side is going to be an adventure, thats for sure!

    More Bratislava

    Nachdem wir heute Bratislava wieder verlassen haben, sind wir den March hinauf gefahren. Der Fluss bildet die Grenzlinie zwischen Österreich und der Slowakei. Das Land ist hier dünn besiedelt, der Charakter etwas rauer im positiven Sinne. Zeltplätze sind hier nicht so weit gestreut. Auf unsere heutigen ist ein Treffen von Liebhabern von alten VW-Bussen - sehr geschmeidig, man hört sie garnicht. Dir Kinder springen um ein großes Feuer, an der Hotelrezeption, die auch für den Campingplatz zuständig ist läuft ein Röhrenfernseher. So mag ich den Osten :-)Read more

    Country number 6!

    Today was mainly about the fear of no morning tea and cold baked beans!

    Our cooking meth spirit bottle was down to the last few doses and we needed to get another. A huge Kaufland and Tesco megastore had 33p pain au chocolat but no meths.. it led to a few funny encounters of Peter trying to explain to a member of staff what we needed, somehow "spiritus" got translated to "ghost"! 😅

    1 hour later we were full of breakfast and ready to hit the road. It was a day of mainly main roads or jungle- overgrown back-lanes, very little middle ground. Oh and a nasty headwind. All day....if you had to stop in a low gear uphill, forget being able to get back onto the bike without going back downhill! Generally not many recreational bikers on the road, mainly old people who could cycle more fluidly than they could walk.

    The small residential areas were interesting, many gardens still had hand pumps on the front, presumably now surplus to requirements but kept for nostalgia. Talking of nostalgia, every fourth car seems to be a skoda from the 00s, favorit, fabia, felicia... still well-loved and going strong!

    We still managed a healthy 88km but it meant arriving into our Czech campsite a bit later than we'd like, crossing the border just before the end of the day. Delayed futher by the reception lady not speaking English, German, French... well, why would she 😀 . Thanks to Google translate we were able to ask if any rooms in the wooden cabins were free, they weren't so she showed me a room in the main building. 2 tiny twin beds and a guy audibly snoring in a neighbouring room at 7.30pm....no thanks!

    There were 2 coin-operated shower cabins, of course I chose the non-working one and had to run back to the tent in my tiny travel towel in order to get more coins. Amusingly, the toilet roll dispenser (just one) was outside the toilet cubicles, so some good guesswork was called for before chosing your throne room!

    After a delicious dinner of pasta with mushroom sauce with garlic and onion, Peter ended up dreaming of buying meth spirit for tomorrow. The quest goes on!    Read more

    Ein Herz für Tschechien

    Heute sind wir zum größten Teil den Europaradweg Nr. 4 und den nationalen Radweg Nr. 47 entlang gefahren. Große Klasse, die Wege sind super ausgeschildert und toll ausgebaut.

    Ein Blick in die OpenCycleMaps läßt schon erahnen, dass die Tschechen ein radfahrfreudiges Volk sind. An diesem Sonntag erhielten wir den Beweis - wahnsinns Verkehr auf den Radwegen. Viele Junge Leute und Familien sind auf 2 Rädern unterwegs. Der Anteil der E-Bikes liegt hier übrigens geschätzt weit unter 5 %.

    Merkwürdig ist, dass in den Städten und Dörfern an den Laternenmasten in regelmäßigen Abständen Lautsprecher montiert sind. Weiß jemand, wofür die sind?

    Da hier einige größe Läden Sonntags geöffnet sind, bekamen wir dann doch noch Brennstoff für unseren Kocher. Hätte ich ein größeres Interesse für Chemie gezeigt, wüsste ich dann auch noch, ob in Ethanol oder im Ethylalkohol mehr Energie steckt...?

    Gegen Ende des Tages sind wir dann noch sinnlos ein Tal hinaufgefahren, um dort einen Campingplatz in einer elend kalten Ecke anzuschauen. Es ist dann ein tolles Zimmer in einer Pension geworden. Der Chef hat uns dann auch gleich persönlich eingewiesen. Er hat eine Zeit lang im Elbsandsteingebirge gearbeitet und ist der deutschen Sprache ziemlich gut mächtig.

    Gefällt mir die an Sachsen angrenzende Region von Tschechien schon sehr gut, so hat sich hier im Süden eine weitere schöne Seite gezeigt. Wer radfahren will, dem sei das Land sehr empfohlen. Die Leute sind sehr entgegenkommend und offen.    Read more

    Wohl gestärkt haben wir unsere Pension verlassen und haben uns aufgemacht in tolle, abwechslungsreiche Landschaften. Schöne Obstbaumalleen, grüne Berge im Hintergrund und wenig Verkehr; es ging ständig auf und ab und die Augen kamen nicht zur Ruhe. Mähren hat dem Radfahrer viel zu bieten. Leider nicht so viele Campingplätze. Wie so oft, mussten wir entscheiden, in welche Richtung und wie weit wir unsere Route verlassen. Vorher noch einkaufen und sich dann auf die Dusche freuen. Der restliche Weg wurde noch zur Strapaze, die Höhenmeter wurden mehr und mehr. Der ausgesuchte See war auf einem Berg. Doch das war noch nicht alles. Der Campingplatz war eher ein Auffangbecken für gruselige Angler mit zigeunerhaften Zügen. Nein, hier konnten wir nicht bleiben. Das sind die unangenehmsten Momente, unvorbereitet einen Biwakplatz finden zu müssen, wenn es schon spät ist. Man kann in der fortschreitenden Dämmerung die Minuten spüren. Um den See fahrend trafen wir auf einen Läufer, der uns ansprach. Nicht nur, dass er gut Englisch konnte und ortskundig war. Prompt führte er uns an einem Platz, den er zu campieren für tauglich hielt. Es war schwer ihm zu folgen, obwohl er zu Fuß war. Schließlich hatten wir bereits über 100 km und 800 Höhenmeter in den Beinen. Er führte uns auf eine Art Veranstaltungsgelände mit einem Pub, Bänken, Bühne, Spielplatz, gemähter Wiese und klärte auch gleich mit den Inhabern, dass wir die Nacht dort verbringen können. Wahnsinn! Welche Gastfreundschaft! Kurz nachdem unser Zelt unter schützenden Bäumen stand, fing es auch gleich heftig zu regnen an. Was für ein Tag.Read more

    Dzien Dobry from Poland...country 7!

    The storm swept over our wild-camp and meant that most people outside in the park/pub went home, leaving us in peace for the rest of the night. The humidity was high so we were feeling particularly filthy in the morning, despite the wet-wipe-wash the night before. Our 2.5-day no shower hair was the source of great amusement in the morning though :D

    A local guy walking his dog stopped to chat as we were drying our things, he then returned a short while later in his car armed with cheese croissants and doughnuts for us. What a hero!! We were truly touched by this second act of kindness shown to us by locals.☺

    The next challenge of the day was getting water. An unplanned wildcamp had left us with less than 500ml and by 8.30am we were already sweating just standing to pack the tent. Getting water was easier said than done in a undeveloped town with no supermarket with a card machine. Once we'd found our oasis and topped up on water and wafers we set out for an "easy" day to Poland.

    We've unwittingly redefined easy over the last days and ended up doing 85km (I had 50km in mind!). The ride into Poland was pretty sesmless, no signage, just that we were greeted by a friendly cyclist saying "Dzien dobry!".

    Polish cycle tracks have been a mix of small roads shared with farm traffic and totally horrible pot-holed bumpy roads, topped with loose gravel for extra fun factor. As we're spending A LOT of time in Poland we're really hoping they get better!

    Heute war Ruhetag - der erste auf unserer Reise. In unserem komfortablen B&B blieben die Fahrräder den ganzen Tag auf der Terrasse angeschlossen.

    Wir haben uns heute mit einem unrühmlichen Kapitel deutscher Geschichte auseinander gesetzt. Über diesen Boden zu gehen, fühlt sich sehr intensiv an, die schiere Größe von Birkenau vereinnahmt völlig. Irritierend wirkt der Massentourismus, der hier zelebriert wird. Starke Kontraste werden deutlich, auch die Verblendung derer, die denken, der Schrecken sei mit dem Fall dieses Regimes aus der Welt. Der gegenwärtig zelebrierte, allumfassende, volksverblödende und alles unterwerfende Kapitalismus ist nur eine andere Spielart der gleichen Schreckensidee.Read more

    Krakow

    Greets from Krakow!

    A 24 hour break from cycling felt like a long time but did us good as we laid down 88km on a pretty easy ride to Krakow.

    Having mastered the art of smuggling lunch out of the hotel's breakfast buffet, we were well sustained to get through the little villages back into the next chapter of city life.

    One highlight of the day was seeing a Stork in its nest with FOUR chicks! A huge bird and his whole family just chiling up a telegraph pole in a tiny village. Fabulous.

    Villages seem to have very quirky churches, monuments, tiny shops selling best-before-a-long-time-ago vegetables and a total absence of local produce. Where does Poland get all of its veg from and where does the meat come from?

    Who needs meat anyway when a vegan burger bar is calling your name! We decided to make a dinner stop in Krakow in the interests of time and being able to see some of the city. The burgers were SO good we had to give other items on the menu a try too, just to make sure the delicious first round wasn't just by chance. 😀

    Krakow is just buzzing with people. Somehow wherever we go our bikes attract some attention and curious people ask where we are going, where we've been and if the bikes are heavy. At a cash machine stop we chatted to a german couple who mentioned they are in a camper van. We said our goodbyes and a few hours later we discover they are 5 meters away from us on the same campsite 😀 small world of crossing paths with random strangers. :)    Read more

    Heute früh sind wir noch einmal nach Krakau hineingefahren. Ziel war das Judenviertel und Schindlers Emaliefabrik. Es war toll, diesen Ort jüngerer Zeitgeschichte aufzusuchen. Entsprechend viele Leute taten dies ebenso.

    Ansonsten verlief der Tag eher flach. Über Krakau hinaus gibt es nicht viel zu sehen. Die Dörfer wirken, wie an die Straße gebaut. Es gibt keinen Mittelpunkt, keine Bank, kein Platz, wo sich Leute treffen. Von Einheimischen werden wir manchmal misstrauisch betrachtet, manchmal freundlich gegrüßt. Es gibt eine Unzahl unfertiger Häuser, viele bleiben auch nach dem Einzug so. Daneben Wohlstandshäuser, Neubauten im Stil, wie man sie auch in Deutschland findet. Schöne alte Bauernhäuser gibt es bisher keine. Die Polen haben auch auf dem Land eine Vorliebe für Beton.

    Die Straßen... (Peter atmet tief), ja, wenn man Asphalt auf Dreck schmeißt, kann man eine Zeit lang darauf fahren. Die Löcher sind teilweise so tief, dass es gefährlich für die Felgen werden kann. Man muss sehr wachsam sein. Radwege gibt es praktisch keine. Bestenfalls sind Radrouten auf Straßen ausgeschildert.

    Zeltplätze sind ebenso Mangelware. Wir werden jetzt wohl häufiger in B&Bs absteigen. Die sind meistens sehr günstig.

    Vielleicht zeigt uns Polen ja noch ein anderes Gesicht. Wir werden jedenfall versuchen, unsere tägliche Reichweite zu erhöhen, um schnell ins Baltikum zu kommen.    Read more

    Pooland

    After another 100km I'm still trying to formulate a balanced opinion on Poland....this is my standing so far:

    Things I like about Poland:
    -Very cheap places to stay
    -Goralki Wafer biscuits
    -Krakow

    Things that I don't like in Poland:
    -Every other town and village so far.
    -The lack of cycle lanes
    -Cycle routes that are on busy roads, populated by people who think it's ok to overtake on a blind hill.
    -People driving whilst on the phone.
    -Total disregard for speed limits.
    -Cows are tied up in fields.
    -Very few campsites.
    -Dogs. Dogs. Dogs. Yapping and running loose harassing everyone passing by.
    -Travelling 200km+ through Poland and seeing ONE person take their dog for a walk. Dogs are seemingly just kept agitated as a house intruder deterrent and aren't treated as companions.
    -The strange absence of any village community. No pubs. No restaurants. Thankfully we're in an area of Poland that has benches today! Yesterday's snacks were all roadside.
    -The look people give you when you cycle past...disdainful, unwelcoming, ... x 100. I seriously DON'T understand that distanced coldness. Not one nod, hand gesture, fleeting greeting. Standing on the side of the road no one asks if you're OK, need directions...

    I'm hoping the list will change a little and that I may be proven wrong, but today was a day where I dared to ask the question if we get a train out of here to the Baltics just to go back to a little "civilisation". 😅 It would almost feel like a failure to complete the route as the circular route as we planned, BUT pride vs our safety and enjoyment is another factor. Its not worth enduring extra days on the roads feeling on edge, AND spending our money here when we are better off going somewhere we are welcomed and treated like people.....

    It almost feels lonely and intimidating cycling here due to lack of friendly interactions, but we want to give it a fair chance.

    Despite the lack of love for Poland, being on the bikes and on the go is still fantastic. There was always going to be some places we liked more than others and the disliked places just serve to add gratitude and contrast to the places and people who enrich our journey.
