Vanuit het berghuisje leidde de kronkelende wegen steeds dieper Roemenië in. De dag start met een kort bezoek aan een ijsgrot, van 35 graden op de berg, naar onder nul in de berg. Eindbestemming van de dag: de eerste ontmoetingsplek van de Balkan Express 2023, in de buurt van Hunedoara. Dagopdracht: op tijd bij de eindbestemming komen om een goeie tijd te kunnen hebben met de andere teams. Het aantal kilometers is beperkt, net als de voorzieningen op de overnachtingsplaats, zo zal blijken.

Eenmaal aangekomen vinden we een villa op een berg, met uitzicht op het hemelsblauw aan alle zijden. De organisator die bij ons naar binnen leunt om instructies te geven merkt terloops op dat het 'chilly' is in de auto. Een mooi moment om even stil te staan bij het feit dat Zaffie de dag ongeschonden door is gekomen. De roadtripgoden zijn ons waarlijk gunstig gestemd.

Wat volgt is een potje ruzie met de tenten, met een wc-rolletje onder de arm naar het toilet, een vuurgevecht met de Duitsers in het zwembad, een gefaald vaantjesrondje en een bord warme, zeer welkome goulash. 's Avonds treedt een lokale Roemeense band op, enige nummer dat we kennen: House of the rising sun. Wanneer je goed luistert, herken je wel ongeveer wanneer het refrein begint en eindigt. Dat mag de pret niet drukken, er wordt gelachen en gedanst, en die kok van de goulash blijkt ook op dat vlak nog eens talent te hebben. Een paar pintjes later, als de zon allang achter de horizon is verdwenen, vouwen we ons voor de verandering in de tent in plaats van de auto.

The winding roads took us from the mountain cabin deeper into Romania. The day started with a visit to an ice cave, from 35 degrees at the top of the mountain to sub-zero inside it. Final destination of the day: the first rendez-vous of the Balkan Express 2023, close to Hunedoara. Task of the day: reach this spot in time to spend a nice evening with the other teams. The amount of kilometers is small, just like the amount of facilities at the campsite, as it happens.

When we arrived, we found a villa on top of a mountain, with a view of the blue sky in all directions. The organizer leaning into the car to give us instructions remarks that it is chilly inside the car. A nice moment to realize that Zaffie survived the day without issues. The roadtrip gods are truly with us, it seems.

What ensues is a quarrel with the tent, toilet roll under the arm to the toilet, a ball fight with Germans in the pool, a failed flag expedition, and a plate of hot, very welcome goulash. In the evening a local Romanian band takes the stage, the only song we know is House of the rising sun. If you listen carefully, you can just about hear where the chorus starts and ends. There's laughing and dancing, and the cook of the goulash seems to be quite talented in the latter. A few pints later, when the sun has long set behind the horizon, we fold ourselves into the tents for a change, instead of the car.
