      Santa Catalina the somosa

      11 Haziran 2022, Ispanya ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Something can be said about the very first bar when you walk into a little village: good place to have a business; everybody hits it first

These two young Italian ladies have been in my albergue roughly two nights ago and we just crossed our paths again
the tables were either taken or still dirty so we wound up sharing one table for my desayuno numero 2
Bee (next to me) is from Bologna, started in Pamplona and is going to Santiago.
Naomi is from Genoa and has joined her friend in Leon and will go as far as Sarria

There are 4 hombres from El Salvador who are going to Santiago in a horse-drawn carriage 😟

While at the bar I sort of had a feeling that the rains are coming our way so I changed my sandals to the boots put a poncho on a backpack and got mine ready.
approximately three minutes later it started raining...

      Rest. Repeat.

      6 Haziran, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

After crossing the halfway point in Sahagun it was time to go to light speed, and then to zero speed for several days. We departed Sahagun by train taking us to the wonderful city of Leon, a place vibrant with hundreds of tapas bars charming piazza's, shopping, history, cathedrals and all the things you could expect on a historic Spanish city along the Camino.

We rented an apartment and rested for 3 days in a place where we could scramble eggs, dine at our own table and wash laundry over and over again if we wanted to. We could sleep in and not have to have our bags downstairs before 8:00 a.m. and hitting the trail early everyday. It was just what the Camino doctor ordered!

I was not quite ready to walk again when it was time to depart yesterday, so I took a bus to Astorga and now I'm staying in the most beautiful place I've ever been on the entire Camino, the Casa de Tepa. I am sleeping in an old attic. My favorite! (Carrie😂)

When I arrived, I met the proprietor, Juan, an old man originally from Madrid, but for many years he spends his summers here sharing this 18th century residence with travelers. In the reception, he proudly displays his pilgrim credential and compostelo from his Camino de Santiago in 1965. He has been very kind, he visits me when I sit in the garden and tells I am magical, he loves me, and I can stay here for one year. ❤️

I thanked him and told him I wish I could, and I will return to this special place one day. I am happy to have another day of rest here now, as tomorrow we will be back on the road again for the final 250 k to Santiago in 13 days with no more time for breaks.

There have been many friends we have met who have had to stop walking or go home, due to injury or homesickness or other circumstances. It is sad to lose touch with each other, and happy when you arrive in a new place and see familiar faces. The hugs and smiles happen during these moments.

The Camino is different for everyone and it is something you cannot control. I think pausing on the Camino is the perfect thing in order to live a few days in the life of these places that were made to support the pilgrims that are passing through. It is refreshing to not just move onward like a soldier marching across the land, but to stop, and linger and smell the roses.

      Day 24 Rabanal del Camino

      31 Mayıs, Ispanya ⋅ 🌙 43 °F

As we headed out of Astorga rhis morning, it looked like we were heading into storms. We have been so lucky with the weather, though, and our luck held. We have started seeing more trees and experiencing hills. We are staying in the town of Rabinal, which is chaming and so is our alberque Each person walking the Camino de Santiago carries a credential which they have stamped at historic sites, churches, restaurants and bars. There was a man on the camino today who stamped beautiful wax seals on our credentials. I've attached a pic of my credential I received in St. Jean Pied du Port France, and I'll show the wax stamp of the cathedral in Santiago.Okumaya devam et

      Day 28 Astorga
Distance from Villa De Mazarife to Astorga
      36kms

With a long day ahead we started out before the sun was up and although it was early it was a warm 11c.
Walking the dirt path the views of the mountain range stood out in the distance reminding us of where we would be walking in the next few days. We passed by an elderly gentleman watering his large vege garden by hand with a watering can he smiled and waved us on. The frogs were in full croak this morning leaping into the streams as we passed and the cotton tree (as they call it) releasing its cotton fluff falling to the ground like snow. Out of nowhere we came across a pilgrim stop attracting tired hot walkers to eat drink and sit in the shade and share their stories a very chilled out hippy like affair. We crossed one of the longest and best preserved medieval bridges dating from the 13th century decorated with flags in readiness for a medieval festival. Early afternoon we walked into Astorga a lovely town housing a Gaudi Museum and a reputation for being the chocolate capital (the beans) which were brought over in the 1500’s from America by Christopher Columbus.
We finished the day with a shared plate of grilled baby squid and walked back to our delightful hotel eating a gelato ice cream.
It was a full day almost a marathon in terms of distance feeling slightly weary but having had a great day.
Tomorrow we start a gradual climb towards the mountains.

      Walking Day 4 to Foncebado'n

      27 Mayıs 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Last night I visited Los Aminos Museo in Astorga, many ancient t artifacts in the cathedral . Started a little earlier for a long walk today. I walked 16.2 miles, mostly alone but the last 4 miles ascending the mountain with Donnie. I ran into Dan from Los Angeles for the 3rd time. We meet pilgrims from Alaska ( originally Brighton NY), Slovakia, Phillipeans, England, Australia and more today. We saw many stone walls and wondered when and how they were built. The arid plains transformed to hills and then to mountains. Foncebadon looks like an unlikely place for a village. Exhausted today and we have to do it again tomorrow and we may start early to see the sunrise at the highest point on the Camino, Cruz de. Ferro.Okumaya devam et

San Martin del Camino - Astorga (26,8km)

      12 Temmuz 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Wanderer, your footsteps are the road, and nothing more; wanderer, there is no road, the road is made by walking. - Antonio Machado

Day 21 on the Camino- we hit 320 miles. It seemed like a good time to reflect on walking: Becoming one with a pack that is now finally adjusted, balanced, a comfortable back hug that carries what I need and provides insulation from the searing Meseta sun; In one day, seeing biome change from endless fields of agricultural products, to oakforest, to farmed pine and into the mountains; In one day, seeing the color of the soil change from limestone white, to pink, to red, to fertile brown; Visiting small, remote villages that visitors rarely see; Boosting the economy of small, rural towns through albergue and shop owners; Getting to personally interact with the local people- receiving well wishes, unsolicited directions and instructions, willingly answering questions, looking up to notice them staring in wonder, then quickly turning their heads, wishing us a Buen Camino even when we are not carrying our packs, (what gives us away?); Sharing stories with a friend as you match each other's stride, or just sharing space in your own thoughts, walking silently; Seeing the colors gradually changing and shadows appearing as the sun emerges from behind a mountain; Viewing the top of an ancient church, in the distance- a landmark that signals the next small village that we will be passing through; The meditative state that comes from just putting one foot in front of the other- providing time and space to consider the small things like the thick wool socks hugging and protecting my feet, the shower at the next albergue that will wash the trail down the drain, to the most important people and things in my life- considering how grateful I am for my family and friends, my home and my community. Walking brings you all to me, as I continue down the road. ❤️ Photos- hops; compost spreader; random rock carving; a cat walks the labyrinth; a roadside vendor; rivers and gardens; less than 300 kilometers to go; a duck points the way; sunflowers lead us to Astorga. Love to you all!❤️Okumaya devam et

Etappe 18: San Martin del C nach Astorga

      9 Ekim 2022, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      Heute standen 25 Kilometer an.
