      Country roads

      After a mentally challenging day yesterday amd a long train ride. We ended up in Astorga and stayed in a wonderful place over looking the town square listening to the church bells and watching the two stroll by.

      By 630am we were off and back on the road. Felt good to shake off the tragedy of the past day and see the dawn of a new day. Along the trail we saw many pilgrims struggling physically and those just starting their journey. Each person has a story..... Today we are in Foncebadon a small village at the top of ridge in a converted convent.      Read more

      Heute ging es wieder normal auf schönen Wegen weiter.
      Die Landschaft wurde etwas karger aber man sieht wieder die Berge.
      Die Holz keuze im Zaun einfach super und mein Persönliches Highlight heute .
      Rabanal ist ein sehr kleines Dorf. Allerdings mit jeder Menge Herbergen und einem Hotel.
      Eine kleine Kirche aus dem 12 Jahrhundert gibt es hier die einfach dadurch aber sehr authentisch ist.
      Morgen geht's zum Kruz de Fero. Einem meiner Persönlichen Highlights.
      Mein Knie Schmerzt ein wenig aber das geht auch vorbei.      Read more

      Day 4

      Day 3: Astorga to El Ganzo

      Today was a short walk. 9 miles. But out of those 9 miles it rained a lot!! Found out my new waterproof jacket is not 100% waterproof.
      When we got to El Gonzo we had a choice. Keep going another 4.5 miles or stop. Patrick chose to stop here because we are sleeping in a teepee.
      Mind you, it is cold and rainy all day long. Now, bed time we are sleeping in a teepee with no heat. We are fully clothed. Jackets on and 3 big blankets. I hope I will be ok. The man next to me is snoring.

      Walking Day 4 to Foncebado'n

      Last night I visited Los Aminos Museo in Astorga, many ancient t artifacts in the cathedral . Started a little earlier for a long walk today. I walked 16.2 miles, mostly alone but the last 4 miles ascending the mountain with Donnie. I ran into Dan from Los Angeles for the 3rd time. We meet pilgrims from Alaska ( originally Brighton NY), Slovakia, Phillipeans, England, Australia and more today. We saw many stone walls and wondered when and how they were built. The arid plains transformed to hills and then to mountains. Foncebadon looks like an unlikely place for a village. Exhausted today and we have to do it again tomorrow and we may start early to see the sunrise at the highest point on the Camino, Cruz de. Ferro.Read more

      Santibañez - Astorga

      Josss ( mit 3 SSS weil 2 SS hat Marco beschlossen, sind für immer verbannt) .
      Bevor wir gestern auf unsere Herbergsunterkunft in Santibañez zulaufen, kommen wir zu einem kleinen gelben Haus mit einer Veranda. 2 Männer stehen draußen, beide mit einem Glas Wein in der Hand, ich weiß nicht, ob sie vielleicht als Statisten in Herr der Ringe oder Harry Potter gearbeitet haben. Sie sehen beide bemerkenswert aus, der eine mediterran, der andere eher nördlich, und so ist es auch. Josss ist Portugiese und Marco kommt aus Hamburg, er hat Hamburg im Juli 2021 zu Fuß verlassen. Sie begrüßen uns herzlich, "Wir sind kein Paar", zwinkert Josss mir zu. Marco kam vor 8 Wochen vorbei, er ist Schreiner und hat in den letzten Wochen zusammen mit Josss an der Inneneinrichtung des Hauses gearbeitet, altes Holz gesammelt was sie verarbeitet haben, unglaublich schön. Dafür bekommt Marco Unterschlupf, oder besser gesagt, er schläft hinter der Hütte auf dem Feld. Beide sind sehr kreativ und schreiben Gedichte, Marco rezitiert etwas sehr Schönes für mich. Wie besonders das wieder ist und wie viel Wärme und Liebe sie ausstrahlen, wunderbar. Natürlich trinke ich ein Glas Wein mit ihnen. Wir reden über das Leben und ich interessiere mich für alles was sie zu erzählen haben.Read more

      San Martin del Camino - Astorga (26,8km)

      Bis nach Astorga sind es ja eigentlich keine 26,8km, aber die Extrameilen, welche wir aufgrund einer kleinen Unachtsamkeit büssen mussten, fielen am Schluss ziemlich ins Gewicht. So haben wir mit letzten Kräften Astorga erreicht und uns dank Noras Pilger-App wieder für eine wunderschöne Herberge entschieden, die überdies noch von einer jungen Schweizerin geführt wird. Wie entspannend ist es doch, sich nach einer anstrengenden Reise in seiner Muttersprache verständigen zu können!
      So einfach war es allerdings nicht der ganze Weg. Als sich in Hospital de Órbigo José, ein Einheimischer mit Fahrrad, zu uns gesellte und ein gutes Stück mit uns mitlief (das Fahrrad stossend), bewies Nora all ihre Spanischkenntnisse und übersetzte Josés Weisheiten ins Deutsche. José wünschte uns, dass der Wind uns bis nach Santiago tragen, der Regen all unsere Sorgen abwischen und die Sonne uns ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern möge, was letzten Endes alles von Gott bewerkstelligt werde. Auch ende der Camino nicht etwa in Santiago oder in Finisterre, sondern nie. Der Weg gehe immer weiter!
      Trotz müden Beinen schlenderten wir noch ein wenig durch Astorga und besichtigten die spätgotische Kathedrale mit ihrem faszinierenden Hauptportal! Nun freuen wir uns auf das Abendessen in der Herberge, es gibt Spaghetti Bolognese.      Read more

      Astorga

      Day 21 on the Camino- we hit 320 miles. It seemed like a good time to reflect on walking: Becoming one with a pack that is now finally adjusted, balanced, a comfortable back hug that carries what I need and provides insulation from the searing Meseta sun; In one day, seeing biome change from endless fields of agricultural products, to oakforest, to farmed pine and into the mountains; In one day, seeing the color of the soil change from limestone white, to pink, to red, to fertile brown; Visiting small, remote villages that visitors rarely see; Boosting the economy of small, rural towns through albergue and shop owners; Getting to personally interact with the local people- receiving well wishes, unsolicited directions and instructions, willingly answering questions, looking up to notice them staring in wonder, then quickly turning their heads, wishing us a Buen Camino even when we are not carrying our packs, (what gives us away?); Sharing stories with a friend as you match each other's stride, or just sharing space in your own thoughts, walking silently; Seeing the colors gradually changing and shadows appearing as the sun emerges from behind a mountain; Viewing the top of an ancient church, in the distance- a landmark that signals the next small village that we will be passing through; The meditative state that comes from just putting one foot in front of the other- providing time and space to consider the small things like the thick wool socks hugging and protecting my feet, the shower at the next albergue that will wash the trail down the drain, to the most important people and things in my life- considering how grateful I am for my family and friends, my home and my community. Walking brings you all to me, as I continue down the road. ❤️ Photos- hops; compost spreader; random rock carving; a cat walks the labyrinth; a roadside vendor; rivers and gardens; less than 300 kilometers to go; a duck points the way; sunflowers lead us to Astorga.       Etappe 18: San Martin del C nach Astorga

      Heute standen 25 Kilometer an.
      Um ca. 8 Uhr machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Astorga.
      Der Camino begann relativ unspektakulär, er führte mich die ersten ein paar Kilometer an der Straße entlang.
      Nach dem Ort Hospital de Orbigo veränderte sich der Weg zunehmend.
      Zuerst gings über eine wunderschöne Brücke, mit Aussicht.
      Danach führte er mich ab von der Straße, raus aufs Land.
      Hier ging der Camino über breite Schotterwege an wunderschönen Landschaften vorbei links und rechts sah ich z.B. Maisfelder und Pinienwälder.
      In Astorga angekommen, checkte ich in der Albergue myway ein und genoss den Rest des Tages und ein leckeres Gemeinschaftsabendessen. Morgen geht's weiter nach Foncebadon      Read more

      Santibanez to Astorga 14k 4hrs

      Another tough day for me. The night before I had a cough come on and it kept me up most of the night. Of course we are in a dorm room with 10 other people so I went and sat outside for a few hours. It was actually quite peaceful under the almost full moon. But I was so tired from coughing and not sleeping. The next big village that would have medical care was 13km away. Our albergue hostess was so sweet and helpful. She called several taxi companies to pick me up and bring to Astorga. No one would do it so we walked. Luckily I wasn’t feeling too bad at that point. When we got to Astorga we got a hotel room. The concierge was also very kind and helpful. He told us how to get to the medical centre. Once there it was like a comedy show, since the receptionist did not speak English, but as always, we got it figured out. Luckily the doctor spoke decent English. He said I had a respiratory infection and prescribed some antibiotics and something to calm the cough (he also had me do a Covid test, which was negative)
      Todd is like a rock. He is feeling good and patiently looks after me. I think he could have finished this Camino and started another if he didn’t have to wait for me 🙃      Read more

      A sunset, for a change

      I had a light dinner and went scouting for a good place for chocolate con churros for tomorrow's breakfast.
      I bumped into Jan and his German friend briefly, it was good to have some 'me' time.
