      Finale.....and a beginning

      April 27 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 41 °F

After a night of rain and power outages, we stepped out the door into a full weather day rain (lots of rain), some wind, and even a bit of sun. Many, many pilgrims were in front of us and behind us silently walking in the rain for the final 12 miles to Santiago de Compostela. The closer we stepped you could feel the excitement build. As we entered the city, the tops of the cathedral became visible. Step by step, the crowds grew, and as we turned the corner, we had arrived after 17 days and 260 miles we had arrived. We were so lucky to see our friends from Singapore as we obtained our documents proclaiming us as pilgrims who completed this Camino. At the end of the day, almost 2700 pilgrims completed their Camino.

Is this the end.......no it is the beginning

      Pedrouzo to Vilamaior

      June 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

A bittersweet day. My last leg into Santiago is tomorrow. But a good day that I spend in fellowship with several peregrinos. Breakfast is in a little cafe next door. I make it in before the large group being led by two priests and a hired guide. I meet Laurel a psychiatric nurse from Portland and we breakfast together. She has hiked from SJPdP with a couple who have stayed at other lodgings. A quick set to the room and hike to the middle of Pedrouzo, I see the large church group coming up the other direction, we are both heading to the main N/S road to recapture The Camino. A large loud unwieldy group I beat them and turn right up the hill. My Wise Pilgrim guide has been explicit about doing this and staying off the busy main road and it is completely worth it. Quiet forest hiking.

The Camino has been my friend and companion, though I travel alone I have not been lonely, save for a few specific people. It had brought sights, sounds, miracles, solitude, experiences, unexpected trial, fellowship, culture, history and so much more. A good friend. But, sadly, my friends life comes to an end soon and today I want to go slow and savor our last day together. How many times do we lose a friend or loved one and wish for such a day? The silence of the forest is broken by the roar of jet engines. We are close to and will pass the Santiago airport, a reminder of how other aspects of life will take over after we take our leave of each other. I am consciously slowing down and am passed by several noisy groups.

I meet a mother and daughter from Florida and a couple form Belgium. The mother and daughter brilliantly hopped on bikes to cross The Maseta. A bit further, and I pull off at a cafe for a bite, a beer and a rest. I meet Jaeye from South Korea and Chateau from Finland. Jaeye is a happy soul. Chateau has been suffering. She tried to walk The Camino barefoot, switched to flip flops and bought a pair of toe shoes which she has taken off. Her feet are a mess. Her main complaint is pain at the tip of each big toe. I break out my first aid kit and give her two of my silicone toe cups and a Euro so she can have a soda. She spent her money on the shoes. I also meet a very chatty Jose and his brother Carlos from Columbia. They are visiting family in Spain and their mother is very pious. She has insisted that they walk The Camino. Finally, at the same cafe I meet a woman who took Chemistry from Joe Carolan at TOHS. She and her husband are from Arizona. He is a Woodbadge trained (Beaver) Assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout.

So, a new day of friends and fellowship. But also a melancholy. I do miss my home, family and friends, but The Camino has changed me. Though it dies for me tomorrow it will forever exist and we may well meet again if faith plays a role. I wonder how I will seem different to others? I wonder how I will change them?

      A Salceda > SANTIAGOOO

      May 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Just remembered didn't finish this off LOL but made it for round dos!! ~30K trek and then yet another grand entrance being drowned in rain just for the happy mems. Had a single room (!!!) in this absolutely mahoosive monastery that took the equivalent of a camino hike to reach the kitchen. Had lots of Santiago fun before camino fam gradually parted ways :(( Been a blast 😀😀😀Read more

Calle to Santiago de Compostela - pt one

      April 27 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

After a night of sulking about that dickhead and trying to make logistic decisions I was too tired for, I had a stern back and forth with myself about bucking up (there was a compelling counter argument which involved pointing out we could HEAR the rain on the roof already) then swung into it. I was just going to walk and see what happened. That sentence would have never ever been said by pre-Camino me.

The rips in my shoes are letting the water in, and I can't afford any more distance in wet feet so I set about Art Attacking the insides with duct tape. I slapped some on the outside too but I knew it wouldn't hold given they're dirty. Sure enough it popped off after about a kilometre but the stuff inside did the job nicely.

It rained gently pretty much the entire time. Apart from the crowds (school trips have joined now, amaaaazing) and the commercialisation and the undercurrent of local resentment, this stretch is just not that pretty or interesting either. Sections today skirted huge highways and an airport, there were eucalyptus everywhere, it was odd and disengaging other than the wayfinding pole measurements ticking down.

Despite this, spirits were quite high, probably due to sugar - I've started shotgunning flans while I walk.

But seriously, if you have limited time/patience/ability and are looking to give the Camino under a week, spend it literally anywhere else than Sarria to Santiago. It is without a doubt the worst section.

Letzte Etappe O Pedrouzo - Santiago

      April 2 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Left Rebadiso at 6.30 am arrived firstly in O Pino, Pedrouzo at 1.40 pm only to find O Pino is an area and not a town. Miles away from the Camino Frances, it is on the Northern Camino. Taxi took us to the hotel Bello arrived at 2 pm.
The walk today was uneventful with the usual up and down. It is like a worm trail of people and of all ages. Not chilly this morning.
      27ks walked 21ks, taxied 7ks.

Last night in Amenal, 16k to go!

      November 1, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We have reached Hotel Amenal for the night. Just over 16k to Santiago.

We walked today with Paul from Ontario, until early afternoon he stopped one village before us.

And at our hotel just now, we had a drink with, Caroline from Toulouse. We have been bumping into to her since before Cruz Ferro. She had taken a fall on the trail before we first met her. She had 6 stitches in her forehead and two black eyes back then. She is looking much better now. But she kept on walking, and now she is one day away! We hope we see her tomorrow in Santiago!Read more

      O Amenal

      October 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We had a much shorter day today and only walked 7 miles. It was a rainy start but mostly just a light drizzle. It stopped after we had been walking for a few hours. Most of the morning was spent walking in beautiful forest. I say morning because it was about noon when we reached our destination for the night.Read more

Begegnungen am Wegesrand - Teil 15

      July 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C
