      Madrid (14.2. - 16.2.)

      Am Dienstagnachmittag erreichten wir Madrid und fuhren direkt zur Werkstatt, die unsere Heizung reparieren sollte. Leider konnten wir dort niemand erreichen und so fuhren wir weiter zum Campingplatz. Nachdem wir von der Werkstatt die enttäuschende Mitteilung erhalten hatten, dass sie im Moment keine Zeit hätten, entschlossen wir uns den Abend bei einer feinen Paella ausklingen zu lassen. Beim auserkorenen Restaurant angekommen, mussten wir leider feststellen, dass alle Plätze ausgebucht waren, wahrscheinlich aufgrund des Valentinstags, der in Spanien sehr ausgiebig gefeiert wird. Wir entschlossen uns kurzerhand zu einem Besuch in einem asiatischen Restaurant (schon wieder 😁) und waren beide begeistert, auch wenn es keine Paella gab.

      Den zweiten Tag in Madrid begannen wir mit Wäsche waschen. Nachdem wir alle Kleider zum trocknen in die Sonne gehängt hatten, begaben wir uns zum Santiago Bernabéu, wo wir Tickets für das Spiel Real Madrid - Elche kauften, welches am Abend stattfand. Die Zeit bis zum Spiel vertrieben wir uns mit einer kurzen Stadttour auf dem E-Scooter, einem Zwischenhalt beim Palacio Real de Madrid und dem Besuch des Mercado de San Miguel, einer Markthalle mit vielen verschiedenen Essens- und Getränkeständen, ähnlich einem Streetfoodfestival. Das anschliessende Fussballspiel gewann Madrid klar und wenn es auch kein berauschendes Spiel war, war es doch ein tolles Erlebnis und die erste Station unseres Ziels in jedem Land ein Sportereignis zu besuchen.

      Der letzte Tag in Madrid stand ganz im Zeichen der Kulinarik. Da wir von der Markthalle so begeistert waren, gingen wir gleich nochmals hin und probierten uns durch die verschiedenen Spezialitäten. Danach ging es zu Fuss zur spanischen Nationalbank (leider nicht der Originaldrehort für Haus des Geldes), wo Jonas das Seefahrtsmuseum besuchte. Währenddessen machte Marion einen Stadtbummel, da ihr Madrid und speziell die Pärke besonders gut gefallen haben und suchte für Jonas einen Coiffeursalon, da ein Haarschnitt bitter nötig war😉. Zusammen schlossen wir das kulinarische Erlebnis mit einem Sussgebäck (Kronut/Muffin) und einem Besuch der Bar Entre Santos Madrid ab, wo wir uns noch einen Drink gönnten. Den letzten Abend in der spanischen Hauptstadt verbrachten wir ganz gemütlich im Camper.

      Nach 3'047 spanischen Strassenkilometern geht unsere Reise nun weiter in Portugal, worauf wir uns sehr freuen.      Read more

      Plaza de toros Monumental de Las Ventas

      Basada en un proyecto de José Espeliú, quien murió antes de la conclusión de las obras, la Monumental Plaza de Las Ventas fue terminada por Manuel Muñoz Monasterio en 1931 y ese mismo año se inauguró. La plaza tiene una capacidad para 23 798 aficionados y un coso de 60 metros de diámetro, lo que la convierte en la más grande de España y la tercera plaza con más aforo de todo el mundo, por detrás de México y Venezuela.

      Construida en estilo neomudéjar y con azulejos pintados a mano, alberga un importante museo taurino, inaugurado en 1951, que permite conocer la historia de la plaza. Cuenta también con una capilla dedicada a la Virgen de Guadalupe y a la Virgen de la Paloma, patronas de México y Madrid, respectivamente. La plaza está equipada con una enfermería dotada con todos los adelantos médicos y dos quirófanos completos. Además, alberga tres salas culturales: la Sala Antonio Bienvenida, la Sala Antoñete y la Sala Cossío, donde se encuentra una biblioteca con más de 2000 volúmenes. En ellas se celebran exposiciones y actos divulgativos a lo largo de la temporada.

      Desde 1994, es un edificio considerado como Bien de Interes Cultural con categoría de Monumento Histórico-Artístico.      Read more

      A última hora de la tarde salimos del hotel y fuimos a la ciudad a ver un espectáculo flamenco. Había 5 artistas, 3 mujeres y 2 hombres, que interpretaban diferentes bailes. Durante la actuación les ofrecieron comida y bebida. Tortilla, tapas y gazpacho y tiramiso de postre.Read more

      La Plaza Mayor es la mayor plaza de Madrid. Es una plaza histórica situada en el corazón del centro de la ciudad. Es famosa por su impresionante arquitectura de estilo barroco y por su animado ambiente, con numerosos cafés, bares y restaurantes que la convierten en un lugar popular para disfrutar de la vida madrileña. La plaza ha sido testigo de muchos eventos importantes a lo largo de su historia y sigue siendo un lugar de encuentro y celebración para los madrileños y los visitantes por igual.Read more

      Primero fuimos de la estacion de Metro Callao direkt a la Plaza Mayor. Había mucha gente en la calle y auf der plaza.

      Roswitha compró un monedero de corcho a juego con el bolso que ya había comprado allí.

      Comimos en un bar de una carretera de acceso cercana al mercado, que era bastante pintoresco. Teníamos tapas, tortilla, anchoas con queso local y pasta en el plato.      Read more

      And finally…Madrid🇪🇸

      I’m not gonna lie, Madrid was the city I was looking forward to visiting the least. In researching places to visit in Spain, I read several times to skip Madrid, sort of like Quito in Ecuador. After spending a day exploring Madrid, listening to talented street musicians, absorbing the art in the Prado Museum, and getting blown away by a spectacular flamenco performance, I must say, I am glad we made the time for Madrid. Yes, it is touristy, much like every other major city in the world, but there is beauty to behold, the sights you’ll want to see are very walkable and the metro is clean and easy to navigate.

      After two months of exploring Spain and Portugal, the time has come to make our way back home. This will be our final footprint on this journey. I thank all of you who have followed us along the way. We hope you will come along on our next adventure! 🐧      Read more

      The Palace, the Prado and More

      Our first day in Madrid was every bit as enjoyable as we expected it to be. We began the day with an overview hosted by our Madrid guide Leticia She explained the history behind the palaces, the museums, the cathedrals, the railway stations, and the other sites we passed on our bus ride. We stopped to tour the grounds of the royal palace, saw the changing of the guard, and then paused for a coffee break at a sidewalk café on one of the historic streets near the palace. At El Plaza Mayor, the historic center of the city, I was tempted to enjoy a local delicacy called bocadillo de calamari, an octopus sandwich that really did look delicious, but time did not permit. We hopped back on the bus for a short ride over to the Prado, the art museum with the greatest collection of Spanish paintings in the world. Leticia explained works by Velasquez, El Greco, Goya. She had obviously done her homework. Glenda and I decided to skip the octopus sandwich for now, but chose rather to amble our way through the Parque del Retiro and the other tree-lined streets back to our hotel. The temperature was about 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but we stayed under the shady trees, bought 2 generous bottles of water in the park, and made use of the park benches we encountered along our path. Our gentle three-mile hike ended back at our hotel around 3:30 pm, giving us plenty of time to relax before heading out for dinner at a nearby tapas bar.Read more

      El Rastro and Mercado San Miguel*

      Another hot day in Madrid! After a much needed sleep in, we made our way to La Latina for the El Rastro Markets (the biggest flea market in Madrid). It was hot (32°+), crowded and very busy, and full of cool clothing, souvenirs and knick knacks. When we couldn't handle the heat and crowds anymore, we went up to Mercado San Miguel for lunch. This was also super busy and very expensive - definitely felt like a massive tourist trap.Read more
