      “Boring” Travel day

      11. mai 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

It’s a “boring” travel day today - tho I still even relish these days. Seeing the different airports, navigating the mass transits, taking the buses, walking up out of the subways into the old squares and seeing them for the first time, even watching the flight attendants do their jobs in all different languages. I can’t understand them - but I know what they’re saying!! I am fascinated by the most mundane and even the routine on this journey.

We left Bordeaux and flew to Madrid, Spain! Not the end of France for us — We’ll be back to the southern coast the first of July.

We got in to Madrid in the late afternoon so we made it to our hostel, got our bearings, had a quick bite at a restaurant that is considered the “fast food” of Madrid — had beer, cokes, a small burger, small chicken sandwich AND a flat bread — all for under $10! Crazy. Haven’t seen “cheaper” food (without seriously hunting for it) since Costa Rica. We also went to Los Artesanos 1902, a chocolateria, and had Madrid’s signature churros dipped in hot chocolate - more like a thick chocolate soup! It was delicious! Can’t wait to see what Madrid has to show us in the morning

This trip feels SO crazy - going to places I only have seen on TV or in the movies. I never imagined I would make it to all of these places. It’s actually really fun seeing the world this way - comparing/contrasting the different cultures as we go from one to the next. I still can’t even absorb what I’m doing tho — as I book the next legs of our journey to places like Switzerland and Budapest! 🤯

First day with a flight in it

      8. mai, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Wednesday 8 May is a milestone because it marks the (slow) start of my journey home - today I fly to Madrid, where I'll have just over 24 hours before I start the long haul tomorrow afternoon. It's odd to be at this point, time has felt very stretchy, but I'm feeling balanced about it all. I have had a wonderful time in Spain. I am having a wonderful time in Portugal. I am excited to return to my wonderful life in Tasmania. It's bloody rosy wherever you look!

Between quite a lot of metro trips (five transfers) and the flight, not a lot else happened today to be frank. I got a calamari sandwich that I'd believe was the best in Madrid, and I worked out the takeaway window saving me a very long time in the table queue. I wandered as per. I reckon if I'd come to Madrid straight from Camino I'd have fainted, it's so busy. I'm glad I had Portugal as a warm up.

It is nice to be back with Spanish though, I was feeling really dumb with Portugese it's such a tough language. I was even helpful to my dorm mates - unbelievably the thing I needed to tell them (she'd left her room card behind on the top bunk) involved some of my most commonly used words, the only way it could have been more perfectly suited was if she'd also forgotten a small coffee with milk.

Real Madrid is playing Bayern Munich tonight in the semi final of the European Cup and the city lets you know about that quite quickly - chants keep breaking out and those glorified traffic wardens are back, nursing their guns. I entertained notions of going somewhere rowdy to watch it but everything caught up with me at 6pm and I had a nap and continually refreshed the score at the rooftop bar instead. This was on a lag from the screams from surrounding buildings, but it did help clarify them.

      Plaza Major

      18. april 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Also nix wie weiter.Les mer

      Plaza Mayor

      24. april 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

      Madrid

      24. juni 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We arrived in Madrid a few days ago, which is totally different to the Andalucian towns we've been in the last couple of weeks. Rather than cute historic buildings, castles and forts, we're in a major city with a metro, massive apartment and office buildings. Our first day here was spent on a walking tour, visiting various monuments (cathedral, Temple of Debod, royal palace) and trying typical food of Madrid (calamari sandwich, gazpacho. We ended our night with a visit to Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and a 1 hour (versus 25min) trip home on the metro due to a whole line being closed.Les mer

      Porto to Madrid

      31. mars, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Today, we had to carpool for 9 hours with 3 people who spoke no English. It was definitely a weird experience, but we made it to Madrid after a very long day. Pearse and I split the middle seat of this dudes Ford focus. Im gonna be honest the middle seat was miserable lol. They told us they'd drop us off at the hostel, but I guess they had a change of plans cause they just let us out on the sidewalk 35 minutes away at the bottom of a hill with our bags. It wasn't the end of the world, but they told us they had to pay a toll to go down that road. It was definitely just a main road. Just tell us you're going the other way lol. We hiked up to the hostel and got a few recommendations for food, and got a bite to eat with some sangria. We forced ourselves to sit on the patio even though it was only 9 degrees lol. Our hostel offered free sangria every night, so we went down and met some people in our hostel before the pub crawl. A nice way to save some money on a pub crawl is to get drunk on free sangrias. We paid 20€ to join the pub crawl, which got us 5 free shots and free entry into the clubs. We had an absolute banger of a night with some really cool people from all over the world. A trick we learned in porto for fun time at the bar is to start a limbo circle. You know it was probably a good time if you both came back to the hostel at separate times, and neither of you have the slightest clue what time you got back at lol. It felt good to release all the pent-up energy from the car ride.Les mer

      Endlich da!

      2. september 2021, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C
