      Sarria-Portomarin 22,5 km

      14. juli 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      To be continued..

      Portomarin

      11. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Day 38 - Yesterday I had gotten a bit wet in the rain and my shoes had gotten completely soaked! So in Sarria I found a pilgrim equipment shop and looked for shoes similar to what I was wearing. I didn’t find those , but I found a pair of comfortable Keen sandals. I wore those today and they seemed to work fine on the slopes. It was another beautiful walk today, about 14 miles in my brand new Keens. Initially there were hoards of people - because remember I told you that a lot of people join at or near Sarria ? So I walked really fast to get ahead - practically running at times. This paid off and about 6 miles into it I was able to pass most of them and find a wonderful cafe for lunch - a cafe that didn’t have lines. Then stopped in Vilacha, the village just before Portomarin and had a beer at this really cute villa with a courtyard. The owner is Italian and this is his summer home and he runs a bar-cafe. In the winter he lives in A Coruña, a coastal town. I’m quite fascinated by people that have moved from other countries to Spain…and at the same time it amazes me that more people are not moving here. 😀
Oh and I forgot to mention that it’s my birthday today and my two friends Ginny and Steve took me out to a fancy dinner. They also got me a gift - a silver chain and pendant with a Camino shell. ( Yes Anand, I did get an unexpected gift).

      Day 34

      26. september 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Not too sure what happened to today’s.. I left it uploading and it’s disappeared 😩 the internet/WiFi Is really rubbish here, so maybe it was just taking too long..
Anyway I’ll do a quick recap now before I head off for breakfast..
I started the day a little bit worried about my back! I woke you with it seriously stiff and uncomfortable. Having trouble bending over, I ended up sat on the floor to put my socks and shoes on and sort my bag 😳
It was a seriously chilly start again, also really really busy for the first 15 km’s.. it then thinned out a bit for a good while and I hardly saw anyone for the last 7 or 8 km’s.. bliss!!
Whilst I’d been ok walking, I really struggled to get warm once I stopped, even a hot shower and virtually all of my layers didn’t help much.
An early night was called for.. still cold 🥶..I seriously think the person in the room upstairs was jumping around in boots until about midnight!! Few hours later, I am no kidding, woken up by the serious snoring from next door!!! I think I’ll sleep well tonight 😂

      Transitions...

      24. april, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Today we started walking before sunrise as usual and realized that the way had changed. What previously were small groups of pilgrims starting their morning - today became to look like the commute into Portland on a weekday morning. Pilgrim groups of 4, 5, 6 and more were crowding the trail. "Our" way has changed. It was until 3 hours into the walk that the distance between groups spread further and further apart. Lydia and I truly enjoy walking along the sounds to the birds, cows, and occasional dogs. A peaceful time in nature.

Now time for a movie quiz. Guess the photo and the movie it represents. Good luck!

Day 24 - Portomarin to Palas de Rei

      23. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

Great apartment, wonderful birthday dinner for Joan last night, good nights sleep, clean clothes, coffee in our apartment.

We left Portomarin in high spirits. As we descended to the trail- it was multiple tour buses, and pilgrims everywhere and we immediately had a strenuous 300’ incline in rain and mud. Our day turned…

Our legs were heavy and we were crabby. We walked for 7km to the first town and cafe and were hoping to sit and have breakfast, however that place was once again overrun with pilgrims.

We ended up sitting on the side of the trail, in a bus like shelter, on two benches while the rain fell. We found two old power bars and a orange Joan had been carrying for weeks in her backpack.

The rain continued, but we had to move on as we had 20+ km to go for the day. We did find a less crowded cafe further down the trail where we could get a quick bite to eat.

That did nourish us and gave us enough energy to make it up and over the multiple hills for the next 10km. This was one of the hardest days for us on the trail. We had to grind it out, as every step in the mud was a challenge.

The weather cleared in the afternoon, and the sun came out and with multiple rest stops, we pulled into Palas de REI after 5pm - one of our latest arrivals.

We quickly found our apartment, set out for food and provisions. We are showered and in bed before 8pm. Our earliest on the trail.

      Tomorrow…we walk again.

      Buen Camino!

      Thoughts from another Pilgrim

      26. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

My walk continued today along the rolling Galacian hills to the town of Portomarin on the Rio Mino. I'm not feeling particularly insightful but this Camino description by another pilgrim resonates with me so I thought I'd share.

"Being a pilgrim on the Camino is a curious thing. You walk with many others, and you also walk alone. You make instant friends and build bonds with pilgrims, yet you seldom learn their last name. You walk day after day with pain, and forget it all while sitting around a cafe table sipping wine and laughing with other pilgrims, waiting for the kitchen to open at 7pm(or 8pm!), so you can EAT! You walk miles, in the early morning darkness without breakfast or coffee, and it feels normal. You sleep in bunk beds and share bathrooms with many other people, and are grateful to have a hot shower and a place to lay your head at night. Sometimes you cherish the camaderie of other pilgrims, and sometimes you crave solitude. You walk through indescribable beauty, and also trudge under a merciless sun or through cold rain. You carry fruit or snacks with you at all times, because Spanish shop keepers decide their own schedule. You eat more bread & pastries and drink more wine or cafe con leche than you ever imagined, and still lose weight. And every day you wonder why you are doing this, and every day you give thanks that you can.

      Sarria to Portomarin
      Day 32- 24km

Well it really has been a day of mixed races and we have met people from all over the world. We left Sarria this morning around 8am which was still pretty dark. As expected it was extremely busy which was great and made our day go really fast. Other then the people, we enjoyed the day walking through beautiful forest tracks, passed farmland and again the scenery was amazing. Also we passed the 100km to go mark today which was a good reason to celebrate with a Sangria 🎉 🍷.Les mer

      Day 39 - Portomarín

      17. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

We are getting closer, the crowds are getting bigger, especially in the bigger towns.
The wind was howling, and we had little periods of rain, not really a fun day of walking. Hopefully, the wind will die down tomorrow.
We are 91 kilometers from Santiago de Compostela!!!!
