Day 8 Reat Day - Portugalete

      September 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Had a great sleep. Woke up early to say goodbye to Bernadette and Anna

Anja decided to stay an extra night. We went out for a delicious lunch I had Sea Bass !
Lots of bones so had to be careful.

I met Anja in Bilbao. She was carrying so much stuff that a homeless person saluted her😅

She bought a new backpack there and walked 10 km. She Stopped and decided to take the bus. She didn't know how so asked a garbage collector who in turn led her to the warehouse where about 50 men were gathered. No one aspoke English and only one spoke German. He was able to help her👍

Today I helped her arrange her luggage transfer. She will do less km tomorrow than I.
We will set out at 7 at the latest It looks like another scorching hot day.

I must mention this Viscaya hanging bridge thing it transports people and vehicles over the channel in a suspended team for 50 Euros.....or you can pay 8.5 Euros to walk across the top of it!!! I could have taken it but didn't realize what it was. I thought it was just an ugly crane like structure Anja took it and had a blast😅

There is an alternative route for tomorrow by the water so we will take that . I don't know how it will affect my kms for the day.

A man in our Albergue got lost just trying to find this place. So many pilgrims go off track The Camino is very poorly marked and there are so many other trails as well. The GR trail is one marked by red and white stripes . It is used all over Europe. At this point I am navigating with a screenshot of a map/ downloaded map from All Trails app Google Maps, and the Wise Pilgrim app. I will be a pro with navigation after this experience for sure😉😅💪

      PUENTE DE Vizkaya

      November 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

      Sicedio En El Puente

      December 10, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Absolut beeindruckend!!!!

      Portugalete

      May 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Day 7 Bilbao to Portugalete 163.44

      September 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Oh my goodness! So hot today! It is supposed to stay this way for 10 days or so.

Met a lovely girl from Winchester as a bunk mate. Her name is Julie and she was hilarious. I had the buffet breakfast at our hostel this morning with her. Then we walked together to the museum and parted ways She had been on a 5 day kayaking/hiking vacation with 12 of her friends. They were close to Santander a place called Llanes.

Very dull walk today. Not many pics. I have been spoiled. A lot of people skip this part🙄

I rode another Pickle boat. A guy on the boat tried scamming me for 50 Euros😳 Then the driver of the boat got into a shouting match with him. I had thought I was to pay him to go across but he was keeping the mone y. The Spanish get very excited when provoked😱

Took my time walking today I stopped for lunch and bought a belt to keep my shorts from falling down.

Love the Albergue here. Very nice Pilgrims. One of the ladies started from Holland 2 months ago Bernadette.

I met a new friend Anja from Germany. I will tell you more about her later.

Oh yes check out the guy with the 12 foot rod. I wish I knew what kind of fish was trying to catch.

      Going to bed now😔
      Rest day tomorrow😎

      Verrückte Brücke

      July 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Read more

      6. Etappe: Bilbao - Portugalete

      May 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Unterkunft bereits gebucht. Ist hier leider doch notwendig.Read more

      Bide On!

      October 2, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Leaving Portugalet after a long night sleep in a very comfortable albergue and a nice relaxing morning :)
The name of the albergue, Bida on, is the Basque (or Euskaran) translation of Buen Camino. I think people have been telling me for days but I just finally understood last night that Basque typically refers to the people and Euskara refers to the region and the language.Read more

      Bilbao to Portugalete

      August 2, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We wake up this morning, have breakfast then head back up to our room to sort through our gear, we are having another shake down, sending another box of gear home and also another box onto Santiago de Compostella. It takes us quite awhile to get this sorted, then we are off to the post office to send our boxes to their respective destinations, we know this will take a while and we have our fingers crossed that we get someone who speaks better English than we speak Spanish, this will aid in speeding up the process. It ends up taking longer than anticipated, so I call the hotel to let them know we will be a little late checking out, they are cool about it and tell us not to rush. We finally finish and head back to our hotel, check out and have just enough time to catch the 1:15pm ferry boat to Portugalete, it costs 8€ and takes roughly 60 minutes. To walk out of Bilbao, the Camino path follows along the industrial area of town all the way to Portugalete, a lot of pilgrims have said it is a very boring walk, so we decide to skip this stage. The ferry boat ride is a much better option. We dock and disembark at Portugalete, this seems like a lovely little outer suburb of Bilbao, this is also where the Vizcaya Suspension Ferry is located, of course we will go for a ride across the river on it. Our hotel is right near where we docked and at the far end of the plaza. It is a fabulous location and bonus it has a bar, so we settle in for the afternoon . We go to a lovely little Italian restaurant just a little ways down from our hotel and we all order garlic bread and pasta dishes for dinner, they are all delicious, oh and a lovely bottle of red. We then call it a night, go back to our rooms and drift of to sleep.Read more

      Day Six: Bilbao to Portegaleta

      August 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I did not want to walk this morning but after a great firat breakfast James and Andrew convinced me that the camino didnt count if we didnt walk the whole way. Many people that we knew were taking the train or bus to the beach for a rest day but we trudged on. This was probably the least beautiful walking day. We were out of the hill side and now walked along the river in urban areas. BUT we still carried on, Andrew and James are great people and we talked and joked about the night before and our lives back home. I was happy in the end that I walked with them. We finally arrived in Portegelata after 2 breakfasts and lunch. The hostel was something out a news broadcast for hurricane victims. A row of bunk beds on either side of a long corridor out the side of a gymnasium. There were only a couple places to put your things and the washrooms were only old change rooms. We laughed a lot about this. As pilgrims we were becoming more accomadated to these municple albergues (public hostels). They are for pilgrims and by donation only, however they also have a curfew and a strict check out time usually out by 7 or 8. Three other guys in the hostel joined us for drinks and dinner (samuel, from italy, timothy, from Spokane, and Oscar 3 (from norway i think). The converstaing were interesting to say the least but we had a good time and James, Andrew and I decided to carry on together the next day.Read more
