Oceanographic Adventure

Today we explored the Science Museum (boring) and the largest aquarium in Europe (yay!)

After a confusing walk through the towering concrete maze of inner Valencia, we hijacked a bus and made off towards the Marina.

As we approached through the sweltering clinging heat we immediately regretted not packing our togs, as s beautiful waterscape unfolded at our approach to the museum complex.

We were swiftly consoled as we realised there was no swimming permitted. And proceeded to bemoan such a misuse of watery fun space.

The aquarium was bigger than Kelly Tarlton's but, a bit ecclectic in layout and people management.. still we got to see all the appropriate water dwelling creatures. 👍

Lunch came upon us in a lazy Spanish sort of way around 3:00pm, and we decided the correct approach was a fine dining experience that cost about a weeks worth of rent.

Hardrock Cafe Valencia then beckoned, and I don't remember much after that...Read more

Das Oceanografic Valencia mit 45.000 Lebewesen ist das größte Ozeanarium in Europa. Von der Arktis bis zum Äquator sind die wichtigsten maritimen Ökosysteme und Meere nachgestellt. In den Unterwassertürmen gibt es ein riesiges Delphinarium sowie einen Tank mit Haien, Rochen und anderen Fischen.

Nein, wir sind nicht auf dem Mars gelandet, auch nicht bei den Filmaufnahmen einer Star Wars Episode.......😉
Dieses etwas andere Gesicht Valencias mit den futuristischen Bauwerken muss man einfach besucht haben. Oh du schöne Neue Welt....... unsere Welt ist es eher nicht. In hundert Jahren werden die alten soliden und kulturellen Bauten noch stehen, diese kalten seelenlosen Stahlkonstruktionen eher nicht. Dennoch wirkten sie auf uns teils faszinierend, doch andererseits auch etwas dystopisch. Kameras und Sicherheitspersonal an jeder Ecke.Read more

Dieses Jahr haben wir uns endlich mal dieses Future Bauwerk angesehen.
Wenn man von Süden herkommt empfängt einen diese Konstruktion schon.
Neben einem Park, vielen Wasserbecken und Museen befindet sich auch das Oceanografic dort.
Diese Themen-Oase über und um die Ozeane ist einen Besuch wert.
Von Vögeln über Haie, Waale, Schildkröten, Pinguine und vieles mehr, gibt es auch ein Delphinbecken mit Show.
Ist toll anzusehen was diese schlauen Tiere alles können.Read more

The Science Museum

There is soooo much to see and do in Valencia! We have only experienced a few of the many, many interesting opportunities offered here. This city would be a perfect place to stay for an extended period of time. And the weather has been wonderful! That is … until today, Friday. Off and on rain all day. But that’s okay because in between showers, we went to the Museum of Sciences that is beside the Aquarium.

It is an interactive museum of science, similar to Toronto’s, and the biggest science museum in Spain. It’s goal is to showcase science in a fun and entertaining way. The museum operates according to the slogan “prohibido no tocar, no sentir, no pensar” which means, “ it is prohibited to not touch, feel and think”.

The exhibitions are presented in a fun and easy way, encouraging the visitor to take part in the exploration of various topics. One room was called the Zero gravity room where you look back on the earth from the atmosphere just like an astronaut would.

The building itself, depending on the angle you look at it, resembles the skeleton of a whale and it is huge. There are three floors.

The first floor with restaurants, gift shop and ticket offices has a view of the Turia Gardens and the giant pools that surround it.

The second floor hosts a temporary exhibit called “The Science of Pixar" that was developed by the Boston Museum of Science, in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios. In it, you can discover the eight creative steps that Pixar, with its computer animation, uses to turn an idea into a film: modeling, rigging, surfaces, sets and cameras, animation, simulation, lighting and rendering. As it was interactive, we could play with making creations of our own.

The third floor is known as the "Chromosome Forest" and shows the sequencing of human DNA. Also on this floor are the "Zero Gravity," "Space Academy" and "Marvel Superheroes" exhibitions. I think that these are permanent displays. There were a lot of interesting activities there.

Direkt an der Mittelmeerküste , zwischen tollen Sandstränden und Orangenhainen, liegt Valencia . Sie hat eine tolle Kathedrale, wo wir dieses Mal sogar rein kamen. Unsere E- Bike Tour ging entlang durch tolle Park's und einen mega schönen alten Bahnhof und nicht zu vergessen der Turia-Park. Die Stadt der Künste und der Wissenschaft. Die Bauten wurden im ehemaligen Flussbett des Rio Turia angelegt.Read more

Wow, was für eine Stadt. Doch größer, als gedacht. Ein übermotivierter Taxifahrer hat uns nach einer kleinen Stadtrundfahrt mitten in der Altstadt raus gelassen. Danach haben wir dann die Markthalle kurz besichtigt und Karten für den Hop on-Hop off-Bus erstanden. Mit dem sind wir dann so lange durch das sehr warme Valencia gegondelt, bis wir wieder am Strand in Schiffsnähe waren. Die Füsse mussten natürlich noch ins Mittelmeer. Abends war Whitenighte mit Schokobuffet.Read more

Mit dem Rad ging auf 20 km super ausgebauter Fahrradstrecke nach Valencia… wow was für eine Stadt. Eine so fahrradfreundliche Stadt haben wir zuletzt in Kopenhagen erlebt. Und dann die futuristische Architektur der Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias, der neue Hafenbereich mit tollen Stränden und einer bezaubernden Altstadt und vielen Stadtparks. Wir waren wirklich geflasht! Da müssen wir nochmal hin!Read more

Dad and I spent a night in Valencia - there wasn’t a ton of destinations there, but it made sense as a stop between Madrid and Barcelona, and there was certainly enough to fill up a day. The coolest thing was the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciènces, which was a super modern and enormous campus of sorts with science and art museums, theaters, and more stuff we didn’t even see. We didn’t really go in anywhere but the buildings and campus were just incredible. We also had a great seafood paella on the beach at night. The beach area was very nice at night, a ton of people were out and there was a very long strip of restaurants. There was also a strip of clubs along a pier going out on the water so it was a super cool place to be at night.
While these things were fun, we seemed to run into every bump in the road possible in Valencia. We changed our plans last minute to come here - we were originally going to Seville, but they are currently having a historic heat wave with 110° weather, so we changed plans to go to Valencia instead. We couldn’t find a hotel in the city so we stayed in a nearby town, but getting a cab on either end was incredibly difficult and frustrating. We also had major confusion with using the metro - we bought tickets using a machine, which dispensed paper tickets, but when we got to our destination you needed to tap a card to open the gates to leave, which we did not have. We asked the security guy for help but he basically said we were screwed. We obviously couldn’t stay in the station forever so we just found an unattended exit and jumped the gate, which was a bit nerve wracking. We also could not get either of our credit cards to work to buy a train ticket to Barcelona so we had to go back to the train station in Valencia to get help from someone from the train company (which was a pain but ended up working).
Ultimately we still had fun in Valencia, but I am excited to get back to Barcelona, where I am more confident with the public transport and I know there are more attractions to visit!Read more
