Portomarin to Palas de Rei - part two

      April 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

If I stay in Palas de Rei today, then tomorrow I'm unlikely to finish my 28km before heavy rain is predicted from 2pm. The rain started gently at 12 today but by the time I'd finished my very excellent rest soup the sun had come back out, so I was planning to extend today's walk and do an extra 3km dry today than wet tomorrow.

The second I stepped into PdR it started pissing it down and after a few hundred metres I realised I was sheltering exactly under the albergue id stay at if I stayed here....so I admitted defeat and checked in. By the time I got the sheets on the bed it cleared up again and now I'm stuck here WITH NO WIFI. I don't really mind. When the Camino has plans for you, don't struggle. I have a bottom bunk and a power point, the shower had a door. I am positively rich in blessings. I'll just try to haul myself up a bit earlier tomorrow.

The theme park fear has eventuated by the way, as you can probably sense. It's a bit like turning up for an exam you've studied for and realising the test hall is full of people drinking coffee and reading magazines. You're happy for them, but this is actually quite important to you and it's hard to concentrate.

I can't really complain about this because there will always be someone with a more justified perspective in which I am the perpetrator. Ugh she only started in SJPP/is walking the stages/isn't religious/hasn't gone to mass every night. But on a very subjective personal level, it's as if someone has taken the romance of it all, clubbed it fiercely about the head, and propped it, bleeding, in the corner of the room. It's still there, but it's harder to look at.

Something I like about myself is my near pathological ability to find a silver lining, and in this case I think I've stuck to form. I think the Camino is taking a gradual descent in both physical and metaphysical planes which will ease my transition out of it. And what a gift that is! If I was stepping out of the thick of it, I would mourn it so fiercely. This, a sad whimper rather than a bang, will be easier to move on from.

Accordingly, I've been looking up a hotel for after Santiago de Compostela (ScD) where I'll launch Project Recuperate. I want a nice private room with a private bathroom for two nights. This will give me the first non-bunk bed, non-check out experience of the entire trip, where I have been in constant motion. When I tell you I can't wait to be a queen bed with real sheets past 7am...

Third day on the camino :)

      June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today was absolutely beautiful and fun!! After waking up and getting ready for our walk, we discovered that it would be entirely too difficult to push Betsy all the way to En el hospital from portomarin (too many hills). We took a taxi to En el hospital and walked to Lugo. The walk was nice, easy and we took our time which is extremely important. We made it in less than an hour, had some lunch then Rob and Betsy went down for their nap. I decided to keep walking (Manysha) for a bit and come back after coming back, I ran into Joann and Clayton!! Then Amy joined us at this albergue in Lugo! We Talked and had some drinks and Ofcourse we invited them to join us for dinner. For dinner we had Fish (hake) and chips with ice cream and wine. We gave Betsy a little white wine and she loved it! She drank her little glass in one sitting 😂😂 Dinner is as definitely one to remember. Joann, Mark, Clayton, Amy and two others, George and Jane joined us. We ended dinner with some karaoke and it was absolutely peaceful and beautiful. Betsy was moving her head and enjoying the music as well. It’s only the third day and we’re all having an amazing time. We really look forward to whats next to come. Fourth day on the Camino? We’re ready 😈👌🏾 thank you everyone for all of your positive comments and supports!! Betsy is feeling all of it!!! 💕Read more

      2nd Shoe Failure

      July 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Well.... Now both shoes have at least one failure. I'm sure that they'll make it another 79KM, but I'll be shoe-shopping soon.

I'm not complaining. I have walked over 800KM in these with only 1 blister*. They're good shoes. I'll miss them.

Shoes are quite the topic of conversation on The Camino. We all compare notes and are intimately familiar with just how our shoes need to be adjusted.

One of the significant advances in foot comfort has been at least 1, sometimes 2, "sock stops" in which I remove shoes and socks, allowing everything a chance to dry out a little. I then re-powder my feet before setting out again (some folks prefer vaseline vs. powder). It feels so good to have a break and to start anew. On a really long day I might even don fresh socks. Luxurious! But requires added laundry.

Among the amusing phenomena related to feet: any time we rest for more than a few minutes, upon walking again it really feels like "these aren't my feet anymore. I don't know how to use them at all"

It takes at least 20 meters of mincing shuffle-step to start to loosen up the tight parts and then walk again. "Fun"

River/pool soaks at the end of the day's walking are wonderful. Pure joy.

*Clyde is doing pretty well. No infection, seems to be receding on his own. I won't miss him.

Day 10 Hospital de la Cruz

      November 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Today was supposed to be a good weather after a week of rain. I was looking forward to it. We spent last night with two other pilgirms from UK and Mexico in Brabadelo. The owner organized dinner. It was very nice. I left the Albergue around 8:30 expecting nice sunny day, as soon as I opened the door, a heavy rain arrived. Lukcily, it was the only 30min day during entire 30km walk today. I am staying in municipal Albergue in Hospital de la Cruz. It's nice, the downside is that there is no food and not even a possibility to order any. I have last three instant soups. That will do.Read more
