      Day 18 to Sahagún

      May 24 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Sahagún is approximately halfway... you can also get your halfway certificate here!

Walked with John from Australia today. His wife is doing Portuguese Camino with her brother. Later on I met Trish & Brian... they came to the church service too... if everyone in the world had the kindness the carry on the Camino there will be a lot less war and sadness.

Had a great sharing session... with fellow peregrinos... people are carrying so much sadness and hurt!

Then a fantastic pilgrim's supper. Everyone had to bring something for 4 people - I made my spinach, pea & feta salad - and it was a hit!!!!

Lots of chatter & banter & wine...

      Sahagun

      May 23 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Day 21 Sahagún
Distance from Calzadilla to Sahagún 23 kms

It has been 3 weeks today since we started walking the Camino and have reached halfway - 400kms.
The sun was shining temperature reached 21c the path was flat orange blossom filled the air and the terrain a joy to walk through. The sound of the cuckoo calling through the trees.
The little caves (hobbit like dwellings as we call them) we passed by are called bodegas and were used for food storage wine presses barrels and bottling vats and some local families still use them today. We stopped for a delicious goats cheese salad and freshly squeezed orange juice in a tiny village before walking on to Sahagun.
A small town with quaint streets and churches dating back to the 10th Century some with little remains. One of which we acquired our credential for reaching the halfway mark we were delighted to have made it this far.
We were fortunate to catchup with Camino friends late afternoon and finished the day with a dish of pulpo (a Galacian dish of octopus) grilled and served with a potato purée washed down with a local white.
      What a glorious day.

      Sunrise at Moratinos

      August 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We left Lédigos before 6am, in the dark, and didn't use the head torch. There were no clouds, and we took a moment to look at the stars. To be honest, they weren't that bright. There was a bit of village light and the first glows of the morning already showing. But I got to see some of the northern constellations, which I'm not at all familiar with, and a couple of meteorites (shooting stars).
Sunrise came when we were ordering breakfast at Moratinos. The 3rd photo, showing a hill with small openings that look like hobbit houses (you may need to enlarge) was across the road from the cafe. We learnt that they are wine cellars! The Spaniards take their wine very seriously!
The other photos show examples of mud walls found in the same town.

      Day 23 - Moratinos

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Very different day, today we made our first big mistake. It was going to be about a 10 mile walk. We stopped in a small town to get our Camino passport stamped and to have a refreshment, our final stop was just under 2 miles away. Well, when we got to the next town we realized we made a big mistake.

Make sure to watch both videos to catch what happened. Overall we walked around 12 miles.

      Day 23-Moratinos

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Well, today was supposed to be a short day, about 9 miles, but it turned into 12 miles due to a minor screw up of mine.

We had a delightful time walking from town to town today, stopping for coffee or a beverage each time. As we arrived in Moratinos for a break, we were surprised by a guy who was doing wax stamps rather than ink ones. We got our stamp and stopped for a snack and a beverage. Then we wandered another mile and a half to the next town, San Nicolás, to spend the night. When we arrived, I checked my phone for the name of our place...Hostal Moratinos...sinking feeling sets in. Why would Hostal Moratinos be in a town a mile and a half away from Moratinos? Uh-oh. A google search later had us walking back to Moratinos to the exact place we stopped for our break. The stamp guy and the hostal owners had a good laugh. Oh well, we added three miles to our Camino. We needed to burn our breakfast calories anyway.Read more

    • Sunday and Monday Long Walking Days

      September 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

In the last few days, we have walked about 30 km each day. That is a lot of walking! But the flat terrain of the Meseta makes this doable.

Finding a place to sleep at the end of a long day has been more of a challenge. We have been successful in booking an Albergue two days ahead. But we have noticed since we left Burgos there are many more pilgrims on the trail. Since COVID, quite a few Hostels and Albergues have closed. So the supply of beds isn’t what it used to be. In our planning, we try to decide if we will shoot for our “planned destination” or stop and stay in a town before or after our planned stop.

We get up before the sun and take in beautiful sunrises. Morning on the Camino is my favorite time of the day.

As I have mentioned before, once we reach the town we are staying in, and receive our bed assignment, we shower and wash our clothes. Then it is cocktail time, dinner and bed. I thought you might like to see the luxurious washing facilities we have on the Camino! Trust me, we are happy to have the wash basin and clothesline! It is a plus if they provide clothes pins otherwise I use the large diaper pins I brought! These are essential if it is windy!

Thank you for the prayers! I am still sore from the fall — but improving every day. I am praying for all of you! ✝️💜

      Hobbitt Houses in Moratinos?

      October 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

No, the hobbits don't live here!

We saw these little caves built into the hillside in the little town of Moratinos that we passed through.

These little caves are called "bodegas," used in the past for food storage and wine-making. Moratinos is one of several hillside bodega groups visible along the Camino de Santiago trail, part of a wine culture that dates back 2,000 years to the Romans.Read more

      San Nicholas del real Camino

      September 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Well what a day, started off beautiful then ended in rain, we walked 11 miles about half in the rain..... not many pictures today, but thankful for a dry place to rest our heads tonight. Sometimes the path is marked in unique ways. There is a great debate about where the halfway point is... so far 4 towns have been said to be it, well we have traveled through 3 of them and the 4th we will travel through tomorrow.... so posting our half way selfie just as Greg and Tam did. Buen Camino
PS they have fabulous Bocodillas "sandwiches" 👌

      San nicolas del real camino

      September 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

They say this is the half way point in the Camino but I have heard that before this is the second time we have walked in the rain but we still walked. I got my boots cleaned off which should make getting them on and off easier Socrates told us to stop at the second bar which we did great food. Sorry I have not posted much the last couple of days we have been tired and sore. Buen CaminoRead more

      Toradillos to Bercianos

      October 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Due to technological difficulties somewhere in Spain I couldn't send my blog from my tablet so rewriting on my phone.
Anyway today has been a great day with an early start of 630 am and a walk of 24 km.
It was going to be a hot day so before 8 am we had walked about 7 km.
Desperate for breakfast we came along by accident a delightful cafe in Sabln Nicholas . Full of memorabilia and a gorgeous old piano we had our coffee and croissants! The coffe was great
On we walked to Sahagun which is quite a special place as it marks the half way point if the Camino! Take a bow our team if eight.
Lovely town with lots if churches and monuments to people we will never know!
But it was pretty and the coffees again were good.
On we walked and the temperatures rose but luckily we had a lot of shade from old old trees. After 23 km we came across Bercianos. A sleepy little town with its crumbly buildings but I have to say we have had such a fun night.
After our siesta we wandered the village. Wine was being pressed and a bottle of fresh grape juice given to us. Then a look at the local potanque competition.
To end the evening we had dinner with a Dutch man called Toon . He was turning 70 and we were all in tears as he told us of his wife's death at 42 of cancer. Needless to say we had birthdday songs and comforted him. I guess that is the true magic of the Camino, not just the scenery but the characters we meet and we are sharing the same experiences.
As I wrote this Brian is chatting to yet another pilgrim and the cafe humming.
      Time for bed
