      Second day on the camino!!!

      June 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

The second day on the Camino was amazing!! We started walking to portomarin from Sarria and it was absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, the walk was too much for Rob and Betsy but I had the opportunity to walk with the rest of the team while we met Rob and Betsy in Portomarin. We had Linda, Mark, Amy, Joann, and Clayton join us to push Betsy! The views were fantastic!! We ended the evening with an amazing steak dinner and company. “The Camino provides” ♥️Read more

      Boente… right past Melide

      May 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

I had a pretty good day today! I’ve been listening to an audiobook lately and I finished it today. There was no rain but cool fog for most of the day, until later when the heat wave started creeping back in 😅 There’s been a ton SDNPPs (short distance no pack pilgrims - a term I learned from a seasoned French pilgrim). A lot of people just start from the minimum distance needed to earn a credential (100km) and then don’t carry their packs. So it’s not as tranquil anymore. Today, we reached Melide, the city where most stop and I had Galician octopus, which was really yummy. I wanted to continue on though to separate myself from the crowd and walked the next 3 miles to the next town with a bed with a Bulgarian woman who I’ve been traveling with for the past 4/5 days! The town im staying in today is at the 47km mark!Read more

      Herberge

      October 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Lounging on a Patio in Vendas de Naron

      June 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

OK if you were here it would go from great to perfect!

A wonderful little hamlet of maybe 10 buildings and a small chapel. In 820, this was the site of a key defeat of the Moors by Spain by Alphonse II the chaste. That same year James the Greaters´ remains were discovered and Alphonse commissioned the cathedral to house them. His journey to Santiago to confirm the findings was the first pilgrimage here and defined the Primitivo Route. I met a strapping 6.5 foot tall 25 year old Spainiard who agreed his pilgrimage last year on the Primitivo was the hardest thing he had ever done…it’s known as a tough route.Read more

      Ventas de Naron

      July 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Today we arrived in the tiny farming community of Ventas de Naron- the only place I' ve seen where corn and pine trees grow side by side. A few minutes to review our stats: 28 days of consecutive walking; spending the night in 28 different Albergues; covering 435 miles; with 3 days of walking to go! It has been exhilarating, challenging, difficult, brilliant, arduous, awesome, and at times, challenged our comfort zones, (sir- please put your pants on!).
Animals/insects along the way: horses, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, dogs, skinny cats, green frogs, thin green lizards, dead hedgehogs; birds, hawks, storks, snails, grey butt bees, striped beetles, banana bread slugs, tons of mariposas that have led our way, cicadas, so many flies, a dead mole, and no pigs, (although we've eaten a substantial amount).
Photos: homemade paella for dinner last night; structure at each house for drying corn; crooked gate to the dark beyond; Jack's Spanish soul mate; breaking the 100 meter mark; a gorgeous sunrise; banana, (bread), slug; beautiful sights along the way. Love to you from Spain! ❤️

      Ventas de Narón

      October 6, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Just a short 9.7 miles today. The crowds were a little less today. We stayed before the recommended stage, so most of the people were ahead of us.
It was a climb today. Mostly uphill, very little downhill. Better for my poor knees...also great for cardiovascular health. 😁
We took a short detour to see a cool archeological site. It was a fortified settlement from the Iron Age (pre-Roman times) and is related to Celtic culture.

      Ventes de Narón

      May 28, 2017 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

This journey has had many high points and, as any good pilgrimage should, it's fair share of low points. Today held both. We woke to learn of an emergency at La Maison and spent the morning bleary eyed, putting out fires (thankfully, not literal fires). We got a bit of a late start and skipped breakfast but the situation was (mostly) under control when we left.

The weather report called for heavy rains and thunder storms, neither of which were appealing, especially given that we had a 20 mile hike ahead of us... and what a hike it turned out to be with 2,500 ft elevation gain. Luckily, while it looked like the sky would open up at any moment, it didn't rain on us and we peeled out raingear off a few miles in.

We arrived at albergue O'cruceiro in record time for the distance (3.1 mph) and collapsed in our double bed. It's the first time we've had a room to ourselves in a few days and we took full advantage of the quiet by napping. When we awoke, we were excited to find that the restaurant attached to the albergue (there are no grocery stores in tiny places like this) was willing to serve us food before 7pm, win!!

      Day 23 on the Camino

      June 23, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Well that was a fun ~33km today, who said the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain? Not today.
As we set off from Vilei this morning, at a leisurely 7:30 we had cloud cover but no rain. It had been pouring all night, but broke for sun rise.
We decided to walk before breakfast and at around 6km through rural fields and tree lined paths we came across a breakfast spot. Perfectly times for a couple of reasons, it was spitting with ran and also they were just open. We managed to string out a croissant as two coffees each for an hour or so, as we watched the rain lash down. Many first time pilgrims, joining the Camino from Sarria trudged past with their new waterproofs and ponchos.
The rain eased enough for us to get underway - rain coats on and backpack covers too. We walked through oak Forrest’s and arable land, undulating all the way. Today’s chorus of song from the birds was also joined by a field of frogs croaking away. We were motoring away to lift the average pace up, our aches and pains being dulled by modern medicine.
Just before Portomarín we came across a Veggie bar - something we had to stop for, as Tracey had suffered a poor offering the night before The food in Spain is definitely orientated to the meat eater. But this was an oasis for all. The veggie burgers 🍔 were to die for and a smoothie to was it all down. The rain had eased, and so waterproofs came off, long sleeves packed away and fuelled we were ready for the last 15km.
We dropped steeply to the bridge across the river to Portomarín and suffered the long haul up the other side. The path for a change followed a road up (a reminder of a week back). Modern medicine was wearing off with 6km to go (or as I had said 5 point something kilometres... it was actually 6.1, but I didn’t want to demoralise the troops).
Again today was a walk through small farm villages, cows, pigs and sheep; and the view of the final village with our lodgings for the night was welcome.
Normal ritual happened, and rewarded with a big beer. Rest and a pilgrim dinner, only one more thing to do (after finishing the wine bottle) - bed. Earlier again!
Tomorrow a shorter day, only 27km and half the lost stage back. Pulpo...

      Palas de Rei

      September 22, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

We're on our way to O Coto but first had to brave the cold rain, black belt dogs that speak Mandarin and the dreaded Kale forest of Palas de Rei.

      Thankfully we survived.
