      Logrono

      May 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today I set my sights on Logrono, a bus ride from this beautiful Palacio. I go to "Winederful" hostel there for three days while I explore the museums, churches, art of the city. In the heart of wine country, there are plenty of day trips to the vineyards but I'll be doing my trip to an olive Grove.

Once arriving here at Logrono and a two km walk from the bus...and Two hours waiting for the albergue to open at 3pm so now in my sleep pod. Very clean sheets, pillow cases and towel at 30 euros a night.. logrono is a huge town, city really so after a rest I will go explore....

So, I got lost with another two hours out of my day I bought some food to prepare dinner after finally making it back. One of the other walkers had a good laugh at my bad luck so passing her on my way in she took my advice and was back at the hostel in ten minutes, still laughing at my sense of geography! She is Donna from the gold coast in Australia!

      Day 8 - To Lograno

      October 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Beautiful 16km hike to Logroño thru amazing verdant fields of olive trees and vineyards. We had a fantastic “pincho’s ” (tapas) in Viana. We absolutely loved Logroño and got in early enough to drop Agnus and Genevieve and explore the city. In our traditional form, we walked with no plan and explored the city, shopping , eating and drinking and ended up in the midst of a football celebration enjoying pinchos up and down the streets. We had time for a short nap, and had dinner reservations at a Michelin star restaurant called Sabores (at 9 pm) with our new Camino friends, Tanya and Bobby from CA. An amazing day all around.Read more

      Palacio Albergue Sansol

      May 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Here in Sansol just a 6 km walk from Los Arcos, I arrived at Palacio de Sansol. This was a 17th century ruin, bought by a retired chemistry professor and refurbished at a cost of over one million euros. That's around 1.75 million nzd!

He obviously had a vision, and this 78 year old still does all the cooking for guests every night. I was glad to be here and bought a luxurious single room for a couple of nights.

On my way into Sansol, I again met Jessie who had stayed here last night, again she offered me resources and fruit, asking if there was anything else she could do for me, I think I reminded her of her mum. She's a lovely young woman and I wish her all good things. I really did look so bedraggled.

As the weather heats up, I'm gonna have to pack my jacket which I've been trying around my chest for ease of carrying. I'm having my back pack transported for now to make it easier.

      Bercianos to Mansilla to Leon.

      September 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Left for Mansilla at 8 AM. Approximately 25 km's. From Mansilla, several of us caught the train to Leon with Paola for she was leaving the Camino here to get back to her home in Italy for her job. She comes back to Leon next year to finish her Camino. She was so helpful with the culture and language barriers. She was so determined on the trails, relentless at times. I knew her pushing hard and never quit attitude was going to help me and it really did.Read more

“Forward is forward” - Perigrino Lisa, from Sweden

Day 4 -Villamayor de Monjardin to Sansol - 19.1 km

Today was a much better day. Out today before the sun was up, I left the Albergue at 7:20am. The trail was mostly flat once I went downhill from Villamayor de Monjardin, with some inclines which were much more manageable.

Part way to the next tow - Los Arcos, another perigrino (female pilgrim) pulled up beside me. We chatted for a bit and when I commented about how slow I was, she said “forward is forward” and then strides away. I mulled this over for a bit - because what else do I have to do while walking alone. And I came to realize she is right. I may be slow, but I am moving forward all the time. This helped the kms click by this morning.

As the way was mostly flat, I was actually making good time and was happy with my progress, for a change. After 12.2 km (no breaks, unlike yesterday!), I arrived in Los Arcos. I headed to the main square where a bar was open for breakfast. Sat down with a lovely roll, large o.j (which I never drink) and a tea. Rested the foot - which is really the worst thing I can do - and just enjoyed my surroundings. I decided that although only a short day, I would like to stay and wander this town as it is larger than most I have stayed in. As I was looking for an Albergue, Lisa - the perigrino I had spoken to on the trail - came to the plaza without her pack. We chatted a while and she told me the Municpal Albergue opened at 12 and rooms were only 8€. My kind of deal!! So, I hot-footed it over to add my pack to the growing line of backpacks awaiting the opening of the Albergue. As I sat there tending to my ankle, more and more 20 somethings arrived. Lots of greetings like long lost friends. Laughter. Loud talking. This old broad decided she wasn’t in the mood for a party tonight and called to find a bed in the next town, Sansol. I got one on my first enquiry and decided I would walk the additional 6.9 km after all. It had been my original goal but Los Arcos was such a pretty town I had decided to stay. Plans change in a dime, here on the Camino!

At 11:20 I headed off to Sansol. Before I got my socks and shoes back on though, I saw Nancy and Dave from Washington State. I have seen them every day and have ended up in the same Albergues 2 nights already. Really nice couple who are travelling with their son Louie. Nancy homeschools him and what better way to learn than with life experiences! Louie is always way ahead. Kid passed me before Los Arcos today and then started running ahead. Running. Crazy! Anyway, they went ahead but I caught up to them somewhere around 4km to Sansol. We walked most of the way into town together and I tell you, it was a scorcher. Nancy gave me a package of electrolytes for adding to my water and I promised to give one back when we reached town. I was SO very grateful for those at that time. I had some, but didn’t want to take my pack off to get them since I forgotten to put them in my handbag this morning. Nancy totally saved me!

We eventually made town but they were way ahead of me at this point due to the long slow hill into town. Have I mentioned I am not good on hills?? I arrived at my Albergue to see Louie already there and Nancy and Dave coming around the corner. I had no idea we were staying at the same place, and they were a bit curious as to how I beat them there hahaha. I took the shorter route - plain and simple!

No drier here, so hoping I can do my laundry in Logroño tomorrow as it is an actual city and not a small town like the other places I have stopped.

Before dinner, headed to a bar at another Albergue as they were the only place in town that was open. Everyone else was still closed for siesta. Enjoyed the shaded patio with a large G&T then went back to my “room”. Albergue owner is quite miserable and I feel like we are putting him out and interrupting his plans for the day.

Dinner at the Albergue tonight was fantastic, despite the owner pretty much accusing us of stealing cutlery and glasses! Huge salad, bread, pasta carbonara and a custard style dessert. Great food and new friends. Perfect way to end my day!

Villamayor de Monjardin and on to Sansol

      September 13, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Day 10 Villamayor de Monjardin and Day 11 in Sansol - From Estella to Villamayor was a nice 11 mile walk past the Iratxe monastery, on the side of which is a popular fountain that dispenses water and/or red wine. I could only take a sip of this - too vinigery for my taste!
Villamayor is a small town and I stayed at a wonderful Albergue run by volunteers from various countries - a German, 2 Italians, 2 Dutch and 3 Americans. I stayed in a dorm with bunk beds with 2 Korean women, one Swedish girl and one Canadian man who snored all night! But the dinner was amazing! The volunteers set up tables on the terrace overlooking the Romanesque Church and distant vineyards. 21 pilgrims and 8 volunteers from about a dozen or more countries ate under a sky threatening to rain, along with the thunder and lightening! Managed to finish before the heavens opened up to pour out the much needed rain.
Soon after dinner we were invited to a meditation and prayer session. We came together in a low cavernous room set up with low sofas and cushions and dim lights. Mint tea was served. After some spiritual mumbo-jumbo and meditation we sat around and everyone recounted experiences on the Camino. It was very nice, peaceful and very, very friendly - a special Camino experience.
