      Santander city time!

      January 31 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Town time! Eduardo took us into the city centre of Santander. He met us at our hotel and then we bussed into town. At first we looked for this churro place which he really likes but turns out it was closed on Wednesdays :( but no problemo we found another place pretty quickly and WOW San Churro step up your game please. They were so simple and they came with a hot choccy which was literally just chocolate. Melted. So simple but so good. Then we went to this little place famous for its juices and we had a blueberry lemonade. Someone tell boost juice about this please. We strolled around the city, and Eduardo showed us all the hot spots. Oo! And there were these chairs by the beach where we just laid down for about an hour and it was everything we needed. We did a bit of shopping, a bit of looking, a bit of everything! Then we went to this place for lunch and we had these things called pinchos! Literally just random things on bread but they were so so good. Will be trying this back at home. Then we went back to the family’s house to chill out (another siesta was had) and have dinner. Then at around 8 we went to go watch Eduardo’s choir rehearsal where they sung that one song from Moana (no idea what it’s called but I’m sure you’ve heard it before) and wow they sound so good. Then back to the hotel and zzzzRead more

Day 12 San Miguel to Santander 265 km

      October 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Great sleep although I was up late looking at the upcoming stages I am thinking of going down the Primitivo way. There is a lot of road walking lately which I would prefer to be hiking more
I will go to Oviedo and decide there I think

Started walking in the dark on a narrow road with no shoulder. I had my headlamp on but it was not very good 😳
I thought the road would improve but it did not all the way until we were closer to the ocean This is what I am not to keen on.

My pictures will show how narrow the road was....buses and big trucks are on it. Not Pilgrim safe at all🥺

I have a pic of an elderly gent walking and who was listening to Opera....

      The countryside really is stunning.

I had the best tortilla ever for breakfast! With fresh orange juice 🥰👏

The views of the ocean from the path along the cliff were Spectacular!!!

Huge beach. It must have been a couple km long for sure. It reminded me of the West Coast trail beach walking.

I used my GPS to navigate where I was to go after it.....and almost missed the tiniest sign that said 'ferry".

There were delightful people from Italy, Nomads from the USA they have an address in South Dakota....it's a long story ...and a guy and his wife from Victoria Lex and Peter. She is suffering with a leg compartment syndrome😥but is improving.

Took the awesome ferry over to Santander. A pirate ship was docked close to where we got off. 3.30 Euros for the ride.

Found my hostel. Very nice indeed.

My watch wasn't charged enough and turned off early. I clocked 25 km today. Sunny and very warm😎

      Santander day 2

      June 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today I'm off to find the tourist bus to get around the various sites here I do not want to get lost again!

From Santander web site, I learned that it is the capital city of the Cantabria region on Spain’s north coast. The Palacio de la Magdalena, once the royal summer residence, lies at the mouth of the Bay of Santander on the rocky La Magdalena Peninsula.

West, the city center is home to the Catedral de Santander, with its octagonal cupola and Gothic cloister. Nearby, the Paseo de Pereda promenade runs along one side of the Jardines de Pereda gardens, where I walked along yesterday..the road up to my accommodation is so steep I had gone 3/4 of the way up when I noticed someone moving up without walking...oh my days it's a conveyer belt!! Hehe.. I headed for the last section of that conveyor belt be assured!

I had walked about 7 km to get here..tho my watch says 13.. I don't think that's right...

What a day! I understand why the scots lassies I met would like to come back to Santander, it is a beautiful spot. So huge it'd take a week to find your way around. The beaches are definitely beautiful and the parks magnificently huge! Specially up by palace Magdalena...apparently commissioned by queen Victoria's grand daughter! Unfortunately when I got to the palace there was a huge wedding going on and it was closed to the public as was the cathedral!

      Santander

      June 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Arrived in Santander around 1.30 pm
A typical sea side city but heavy with high rises and industry too. Off to information to get directions then proceeded to get lost ..again!!

I had only just left the bus though when, You won't believe what happened to me today...it's a great Camino story...I had just got off the bus in Santander (after Logrono) and trying to find my way around to the ferry terminal and then my lodgings via a super mercado.

Next thing I hear my name being called out...12000 miles from home in a new city, I didn't think it was meant for me, but turned round and here was Lisa a young French girl 19 years on her own..I had met her on the train on the way to St Jean Pied de Porte a month ago. How she remembered me I'll never know, I remembered her face but not her name.

It turned out she was very distressed and didn't know what to do. I began listening to her, and she dissolved into many tears. I think she has been hurt on the walk... But couldn't say what, just about a boy. I stayed with her for an hour or so, asked if she'd like to go sit have a coffee but she was reluctant.

I had to leave her in the end but not before she made a decision to go home to France to heal a bit by walking in familiar surroundings... I am keeping in touch with her I want her to be safe! Poor young woman, her heart was broken.

But how amazing was that!! We weren't even on our start Camino! I'm sure the good Lord put us together today. Just a pic of Lisa and I and then my walk along the promenade to my accommodation.

      Spain in the Rain

      June 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Uncle’s birthday!

      January 29 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today was a much needed rest day. We spent a lot of the day inside our hotel watching Emily in Paris before heading out for a walk along the beach. Again, convinced Santander doesn’t do winter right. Originally we had set out to do some clothes shopping but all of the shops were super far away in the centre of town so that was a no-go. Today was also a special day because it was Jeroen’s birthday!! After the beach we headed to the family’s house where we had spaghetti bolognaise for dinner and cake of course. There was a surprise visit from Lidia’s (my auntie) family who I’d all met before when I was super young so couldn’t really remember them. But it was so good to see them again and catch up on life and stuff! We stayed there pretty late before getting dropped back at the hotel. ZzzzRead more

      Santander wir kommen!

      April 20 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

      Santander

      September 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I'd met this guy before. He is a retired sailor from the US Navy and he doesn't let you forget it. We were both waiting for the ferry to Santander and I thought the tide might be a problem.

"Of course there's enough water! We landed boats on beaches in the War! Remember?" he said with authority, almost haughtily. Moments later a young Spanish later came over to tell us we will have a bit of a wait. The tide needs to come in more before the boat can dock. The sailor left me without a word and sat looking at his phone.

I walked through a eucalyptus plantation earlier in the day. At times it was like walking through a cough sweet.

Photos - Santander, the capital of Cantabria, at last!...the low ceiling and Romanesque arches create a very special space for prayer in the cathedral... evening fishing by the art gallery...much of old Santander burnt down in 1941 but the wide avenues that replaced it are a delight to stroll around...arriving at Santander by boat...peace and quiet while walking to Santander

      Santander 2 Sightseeing

      May 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      June 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C
