    Leaving Santander by the coast

    September 24, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We took another coastal option today. Instead of following the arrows along concrete and asphalt, we walked along the promenade towards the beaches and the cliffs, passing through some very nice parts of Santander. I'm surprised that more pilgrims don't take this variant.

    Santander - ES

    June 12, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Last night's campsite was but a stones throw from the beach. Was great being able to hear the ocean all night.

Not a long ride today but good to get into Santander early to do some exploring of the city.

    Santona and Santander

    August 22, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Hello sorry its been a few days, connectivity issues, our orange data card from France doesn't connect well over here in Spain. If you are using the AIS app you will know that we have been moving steadily west. After Bilbao we sailed to Santona and anchored in the Estuary. The originally plan was to take a yacht club mooring but when we got there there werent any moorings, not that there were no free ones but that all the moorings were gone! It was choppy and we were quite a distance from shore so stayed on board. While there the French boat we were along side in Getaria came past and gave us a wave. Wind dropped at night but there was a concert from a male tenor that went on till about 1:30am. In the morning we headed to Santander we motor sailed in the morning but wind died in afternoon. Photos1-4 of Santona promontory on 3 if you look carefully there is a lighthouse. Photos 4 + 5 are the view coming into the Santander river mouth we anchored off Magdalena beach. We read our Spain guide book and the city had very little to offer except the beach so we kept costs down and didn't use marina.Read more

    Spanish headaches

    June 1, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 16 °C

There's a reason why Green Spain is green & while the UK is basking in glorious sunshine (for once) Northern Spain seems to be shrouded in a semi-permanent blanket of Mancunuian greyness. Still Monday - Thursday was all about the Spanish. 3 hour blocks of language interspersed with activities designed to integegrate & socialise in equal measure - urgh. When the rain let up that called for an escape to the coastal path - either running or walking depending how quickly escape was called for or how much head clearing was needed - language study promoted some belting headaches (not hangovers!) The bright side was the fruit - breakfast and snack time - cherries & nectarines were heavenly. Day off on Friday was miserably wet - more so. Report writing - get ahead of myself.Read more

    Santander Day 2

    April 23 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We have been lucky with the weather here in Santander where average rainfall in April is ~5 inches. Today involved ten miles of walking along the beautiful paths that surround this coastal city and viewing architecture.

The Magdalena peninsula was particularly stunning - we stumbled onto a seal show (but failed to find the penguins!) The sunset boat tour out to the headlands was the highlight of the day!Read more
