      Trabadelo

      May 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I spent a very relaxing day at Casa Susi. I had coffee and muesli in the kitchen with the other pilgrims who were walking today. Then a second breakfast upstairs with Susi and Fermin and Peter from Queensland (of the cards and calendar gofundme).

I relaxed in the hammock and by the river and met another group of interesting pilgrims in the evening at dinner.

      A perfect few days!

      Trabadelo - O’Cebreiro

      May 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today I am writing in English for my family in the UK.

I got up at 5.45 , what a night. The snore factor was on the scale of 1-10, by 10.
I left Casa Susi in the dark, Susi and Fermin are really very hospitable hospitaleros. Susi is Australian and has walked the Camino 10 times, since 2017 she has had her hostal and also met Fermin, her great love. He too was a pilgrim.
On my way to the next climb to O’Cebreiro, another very special place on the Camino Frances. I walk through ancient mountain villages and enjoy the beautiful nature, it is overwhelming. At 14.45 I finally reach O'Cebreiro, the feeling in my legs had disappeared and on the way I even thought I would lie down somewhere on the path and not get up again, "persevere Jacqueline" whispers an inner voice. And how overjoyed I am when I reach O'Cebreiro, I feel as if I have climbed the Kilimanjaro. I have a lovely little room, alone. Thank you God.

      Ponferrada to Trabadelo

      May 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I caught the bus this morning to Villafranca del Bierzo. I then walked to Trabadelo. It was a bit of a climb and alongside a road but the path was flat.

And then after two years of anticipation I arrived at Casa Susi and immediately burst into tears when I saw Sue and Fermin. As many of you know it is a beautiful albergue. The house is so pretty and comfortable.

After a shower I went down to the river to soak my sore foot in the cold water. I am here for two nights and I hope I will feel refreshed and more able to continue on.

We had a delicious communal dinner with lots of really nice people. A perfect end to the day.

      Villafranca - CASA SUSI Trabadelo

      May 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Du gibst mir so viel positive Energie🤍 you made my day. Thank you Vas.

Lydia from Guatemala. We came out from our Albergue this morning pretty much at the same time so then just continued together going on the Way
She told me a lot of fascinating things about Guatemala
She is a runner and actually ran parts of Meseta sending her backpack forward and just holding on to her water bottle

Rivers Are Even Better Than Pools

      July 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Brisk and very refreshing on this low-90s day.
At ~2,000ft (~700m) elevation I expected the Rio Valcarce to be a warmish river. It is not warm....
....but feels fantastic on my aching feet.

I'm watching two bewitchingly blue/black butterlies bounce by a berry bush while I soak my toes and drip-dry on a concrete embankment in a light breeze.

I think that this might be my 1st ever river-swim in Spain. I doubt it is my last.

      Life is good.

      Son d'une rivière et silence

      May 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

    • Cacabelos to Trabadelo

      October 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

An 18km day in cool cloudy conditions. A great walk today.

We didn’t leave till just after 8am, correctly predicting that there might be a bar open by then. So we had a good breakfast before hitting the road.

The walk was in 2 halves.

First half through beautiful undulating vineyard country. Just a lovely few hours to Villafranca del Bierzo.

Along the way we found the plant that is so pleasantly aromatic. Seems to be wild fennel that grows like a weed here.

Villafranca del Bierzo is a beautiful town, at the confluence of the Burbia and Valcarce rivers, surrounded by very steep mountains.

We had coffee there and bought sandwiches to go, for a later lunch along the track.

The second half was all along a little used road that followed closely the Valcarce river upstream toward the north-west all the way to Trabadelo. All the way we could hear the burbling sound of the rapidly flowing stream, never more than 15 meters away. We stopped to eat our sandwich in a very quiet village called Pereje.

After reaching Trabadelo and getting settled we were very pleasantly surprised to bump into Lisa from Portland whom we had met on the first day back in the Pyrenees and a for few days after that. We’d assumed she was days ahead but it turns out she became quite ill with a lung infection way back in Estella. Some days in hospital and a few slow days of recovery meant she had just now caught up with us.

We all had a good yarn and will likely dine together in O Cebreiro tomorrow, assuming we survive the climb of about 900m.

Good dinner and early night tonight. We’re in the Pensión El Puente Peregrino which is very good.

The Danish “Team Camino” are also here with their valiant little doggo.

      Trabadelo

      September 18, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

      October 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Such a nice day! The standard stage would have been 5 K longer, and a long steep climb. We opted to stop partway up after a walk through beautiful scenery in intermittent showers and gusts of warm wind. We were often accompanied by the music of full rivers and the sound and smell of wind shaken autumn leaves.

I walked the day alone, soaking up all the sensory goodness. Morgan caught up as I sat in front of a cafe watching other pilgrims come around the corner and we had lunch together waiting for a break in the rain before heading back out.

Our albergue is a nice one, with a beautiful little church right on the grounds , and a statue of Santiago in his pilgrim garb. Further on in the village is Tito’s, where along with David and Ollie we had a very convivial evening meal. We did get rather soaked coming back to the albergue. We may be walking in rain for the rest of the camino.

For tonight, though, we are warm and dry, listening to the rain fall and preparing to sleep. And for the record, I managed to keep upright all day today. Another good day on the Camino.
