Sean’s wisdom

My scallop shell is smashed to smithereens. I walked down to the church in this little village, to pray, and it was closed.

I mentioned to Sean that these were NOT good omens.

He told me that, yesterday as we were walking he looked over to one side and saw a very old church. Man’s creation. Then he looked over to the other side and saw the view that we have been sharing in many of our pictures. God’s creation.

And he observed that the vast majority of our pictures, and of our focus, have been of God’s creation, not man’s and that that’s where our focus should rightly be.

And for the umpteenth time I am SO glad that I have Sean as my companion on this journey!Read more

Pamplona to Puenta la Reina

Day 4 and I'm already taking some views for granted. But that's okay as I'm enjoying more of the random conversations with other pilgrims. Nancy from L.A., who's married with three kids, one of whom will join her in Leon; Katrina, a fifth grade teacher from Brisbane who is traveling solo; tonight's bartender, who relocated from Madrid after visiting Hotel Jakue on his Camino last year, and Robert from London, who is grieving his girlfriend of 20 years who died in 2022. Lots of people and stories.

The 15-mile walk itself was rigorous, out of the city and up the mountain where the windmills and pilgrim statues--along with a love/peace/coffee bus run by a couple who only aim to recoup their costs--are, then down a rocky slope and through small towns. We were soooo ready for the finish line. Saw an inviting refuge (aka outdoor bar) when we got to the outskirts of town and were so excited to learn it was actually part of our hotel for the night! It is also an albergue/hostal, so it's been a good place to see and talk to other pilgrims (the Sercotel in Pamplona, not so much!).Read more

"Where the way of the wind meets the way of the stars"

This is an excellent example of corporate relations done well. They slapped dozens of turbines on a beautiful ridge, and with an inexpensive steel sculpture turned it into a scenic landmark.

Well played, wind company.

To be fair, it's an awesome location for oelic energy and the turbines aren't inherently unattractive. I sorta like the whop whop whop sound when it matched my hiking cadence.Read more

Day 2.

Today was our first day walking with the big climb to Alto de Perdon. It was a beautiful walk out of Pamplona, with the Alto de Perdon looming before us. We were so happy when we got halfway up and saw that the trail avoided the highest and steepest part, but even so, it was quite the hike. We stopped in Zariquiegui to get some lunch (bocadillos and aquarious). After lunch, we walked to the top of Alto de Perdon and then downhill by the road. We took a shortcut from the road and ended up walking through a wheat field! Then, we had an easy walk to the town we were staying in, Urtega.

At the albergue, Casa Baztan, we washed out clothes and met Joanne and Paul, 2 Aussies we made friends with, and ended up running into for the rest of our walk. The communal dinner was grilled pork or chicken, salad, rice fries, and a desert and wine, of course!Read more

Camino Day 4: Pamplona to Pte la Reina

The walk to Puente La Reina was so scenic but brutally hot! The entire way to Alto del Perdon didn’t have any shade and we were melting 🥵

At the top, we met Miguel, a man who’s done 6 full caminos and countless shorter routes. He was spreading kindness along the way and gave each one of us a pin with beads and the camino shell. He also told us that he was meant to be walking with his wife who had passed away recently. So many stories and reasons to walk 🤍

From there, it was a very long descent with no shade all the way to Uterga. This little town had its festivities on this day and we were having the biggest laugh with a few mischievous kids lighting up firecrackers in the water fountain.

The next town was Obaños, a really cute lil town, where we finally took a rest on a grassy patch before walking the last 50min to our stop for the day. The sun had taken a toll and we stopped at the first and nicest albergue we could find. We needed to treat ourselves a bit.Read more

Fields n Hills

Leaving the comfort of a cozy private bedroom took a bit of effort, to be honest. There was a fleeting notion of treating myself to another day of Pamplona.

But!

These miles ain't gonna walk themselves.

To wit, the walk through Pamplona is urban and not very pretty until I got into the hills of wheat and poppies.... And People! Wow! Where did all these people come from?!?

It's a warm and pleasant day with a light breeze. I'm keeping my eyes open for a wide-brimmed hat.... When it gets sunnier and warmer it will feel nice to have shade on my head.

My legs and morale are doing well, the views are comforting.... And at 10:30 AM I think I'm nearly at the halfway point and nearly at the crest of today's hill.

I just had a nice coffee and finished the last of yesterday's pan de chocolate (contributing to the high morale...)Read more

Up early as our bags had to be ready for pick up by 7:15! Started the day with a big climb up to the metal statues at Alto del Pardon, followed by a long descent out of the mountains and into the vineyard area. Went through two villages preparing for the 'running of the bulls'.
