    Hello Delhi!

    26 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

We are staying at another lovely hotel, this one being conveniently situated in New Delhi close enough to Old Delhi. After we got situated we took a walk to a nearby area of markets and shops called Connaught Place where we were planning find a place to eat dinner. We ended up also enjoying a walk around a lovely park called Central Park that was created in the hub where several large streets meet.

On our way out of the hotel we ended up chatting with the concierge for a while about tour ideas for Delhi and beyond. The disappointing thing we learned is that the Taj Mahal is not open for night viewing during the full moon in the first week of May, which I’d really been hoping to experience. After talking with him, we were contemplating hiring a driver for a couple days to visit at least one nearby city.

On our walk three different people ended up telling us that we should visit one of the tourist centers if we wanted to set up any tours, because you pay a big mark-up doing anything through the hotels. When our tuk-tuk (rickshaw taxi!) driver after dinner encouraged us to get a free map from on of the centers, we decided to go in and check it out.

I’m excited to say that we now have an INCREDIBLE itinerary lined up for our last 10 days in India thanks to this tour operator. The next two days are guided day tours in Old and New Delhi, and then we will travel to four cities slightly further afield from Delhi for guided visits (including a boat trip on the Ganges!) - heading out on this adventure by plane and back by train!! We are super excited to have the last part of our trip all planned out and packed full of sights to visit.

When our tuk-tuk driver this evening learned that Eric had driven a rickshaw 3500+km, he couldn’t believe it. He proceeded to let Eric drive his rickshaw the last block or so back to our hotel! 🤣🤣🤣🛺💨

    Jama Masjid (Jama mosque)

    27 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

We started our day with a visit to this huge mosque in the heart of Old Delhi. It can hold 25,000 worshippers for Friday prayer!

Going first thing in the morning there were not very many visitors and it was a very peaceful place. We climbed the minaret and had a fantastic view of the surroundings, although the bad air quality had the effect of feeling like we were in a frosted-glass dome that we couldn’t see through past a certain circumference.Читать далее

Chandni Chowk Market and Spice Market!

    27 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 93 °F

Our guide walked us through this incredible old wholesale market that had just about anything you would ever need to buy. We specifically wanted to visit the spice market, which was absolutely incredible. The spells were amazing. I was actually sneezing in a couple of places, it was so intense. Most of the stalls were wholesale, but we managed to pick up a few things from a retail shop.Читать далее

    The Red Fort

    27 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 97 °F

We were lucky enough to be shepherded to the front of the long line to get into this very old fort, which is our second UNESCO World Heritage site of the trip. A free government approved guide offered to show us around, thank goodness, as it was a large complex (254 acres) with little signage.

(As a side note, we had to go through metal detectors and have our bags X-rayed to enter The Red Fort and another place we visited today. To go into our hotel we have to have our bags X-rayed and trunks and under the hood are checked in all cars coming onto the hotel property.)

The Red Fort was built in the mid-1600s during the Mughal Empire and served as the residence of it’s leaders. It was erected by the same leader who had the Taj Mahal built. It was so interesting to learn about its former glory - buildings with gilded and mirrored ceilings, pashmina curtains hanging on the openings of the buildings, and a throne covered with jewels including a huge diamond that is now part of the UK’s Crown Jewels. There were shallow canals build in the complex that were filled with rose water and created waterfalls in some of the buildings! After the British captured the fort in 1957 they destroyed 2/3 of the complex and erected military barracks. All of India’s prime ministers have given Independence Day speeches from its ramparts. It’s an incredibly important place.

Interestingly, we were back in a situation where we were being seriously gawked at and asked frequently for photos/selfies. We’ve learned the hard way before that if we are in an area with lots of Indian tourists, if we say yes to one person then it will be never ending. I think we were being stared at so much again because there were people from all over India visiting the Red Fort. Walking down the streets in Delhi, people seem to be accustomed to tourists with light skin and don’t act that way.

    27 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 97 °F

This is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and marks the place where he was cremated. Nearby are other memorials, including one dedicated to Indira Gandhi. It’s located in a lovely large, peaceful park/garden.

Unfortunately they closed the area right at the actual Gandhi memorial (eternal flame) for 30 minutes right as we got there, so photos from afar are as close as we got.

    28 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Our third UNESCO World Heritage Site on this trip, and once again we learned that having an excellent guide makes all the difference. I don’t think I can explain all that we learned on our tour here. In a nutshell, this Tomb was build in the time of the Mughal empire, and it’s central design was copied later for the Taj Mahal. I’ll make notes on some of the photos to share some of the details that we learned. Including the fact that the gardener and barber were given tombs in the compound because they had to be treated well - they were the two people most likely to be able to kill the king!Читать далее

A large mosque was built near it from stone blocks taken from existing temples in the area that were destroyed by Islamic invaders. The large mosque didn’t survive the test of time, but remaining parts were carved in a beautiful blend of Islamic and Hindu symbology.Читать далее

Our guide/driver took us to visit a huge Sikh temple that started in the 17th century. To go inside we had to wear simple scarves to cover our heads.

The gold and inlayed stone work inside were amazing. This temple has the largest kitchen in Delhi, and they feed 40,000 people a day a meal of chapati (flatbread), rice and lentil stew off of metal trays. They feed anyone and everyone who comes. The kitchen is huge, and includes a machine that makes 3000 chapati an hour! Plus women were making some by hand and they had me give it a try.Читать далее

Miniature Painting demo & gallery visit

    30 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ 🌧 81 °F

Our guide took us to a gallery full of paintings old and new done in the miniature painting technique. Many were authorized reproductions of some of the paintings that we’d seen in the Palace Museum. They were authorized because they are descendants of the original artists! We learned about the local rocks and semi-precious stones that are ground up to create light-fast pigments. The rock powder is mixed with powdered gum arabic (the sap from the acacia tree and the binder I associate with water colors) and water and further ground by hand for weeks. Brushes are made from camels’ eyelashes and the long hairs on squirrels’ tails!Читать далее

    Invitation to a wedding celebration!

    30 апреля 2023 г., Индия ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

We were invited this evening to an Indian pre-wedding ceremony in the neighborhood right outside the palace hotel where we are staying!! Our driver/guide is friends with a man who lives in the neighborhood that was celebrating the wedding and he invited us to come eat dinner and see the celebration!

This was a dinner and celebration held the night before the actual wedding, and just for family and close neighbors. The groom does not take part in this event. The food was amazing of course, and they invited US up on stage between dancing acts, which was a bit embarrassing but also an honor. That way we were able to meet the bride and give her our best wishes.

Our host then took us to meet his parents up in their room in their 100-150 year old house, and then up onto the roof for the view. This neighborhood reminded me of being in Venice - skinny maze of roadways-alleys that cars couldn’t fit in, and the bottom floor walls of the 3-4 story buildings/houses were two feet thick.

This is just one more experience on this trip that we will never forget!

    Shahpura House - another palace!

    1 мая 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

We are feeling very spoiled with a stay for a couple nights in ANOTHER palace, this one in a smaller overall footprint but more rooms. I’m feeling like I can see where the McMennamin brothers might have gotten their inspiration for the decorative details in their wonderful hotels. This hotel is another heritage building, being maintained by the descendants of the royal family of Shahpura. We learned that this state, Rajasthan, used to be made up of 19 separate kingdoms which eventually combined into one state, the largest in India. We’ve now stayed in two of the kingdoms!

While we were eating in the rooftop restaurant, a musical duo played Indian love songs for us! ❤️

    Amber Fort

    2 мая 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Two more UNESCO sites today, and the Amber Fort was the first one. Set up on a hill, we actually road an elephant up to the fort. We felt a little funny about that, wondering about how the elephants are being exploited.

The aggressive hawking of tourist wares here before we moved past the ticket gate was the worst that we’ve experienced on our trip. At one point I’d just had it with this one guy who wouldn’t leave us alone, and I growled at him. He backed off like I was a crazy woman! 🤣🤣

The fort was built in the late 16th century and added to/improved upon for at least 150 years.

    City Palace

    2 мая 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

Construction of this palace began in 1727, and it is still a residence for the royal family. In fact, for an extra $50US each we could have seen more of the personal residence. But we stuck to the normal museum area, a lot of which did not allow photography. They had photos of official visitors like British royalty up until fairly recent times.Читать далее

ПутешественникWe haven’t figured it out for sure, but it is a landscape/street tree that we’ve seen all over here. Not usually trimmed like this though!

    The Jantar Mantar Observatory

    2 мая 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We had no idea what we were going to see here, but discovered that it is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a collection of huge astronomical instruments completed in 1734 by the king who founded Jaipur. The different structures tell time in various ways, show where the North Star is in the sky, show where the twelve astrological sign constellations are in the sky, and more. It felt like a large sculpture garden!Читать далее

Hanuman Temple - the monkey temple

    2 мая 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Have you ever held a monkey? Eric and I can now say we have. This temple was established because a statue of the Monkey god Hanuman was found there and there was water coming out of the hillside considered to be Ganges water and blessed by priests. The monkeys liked the place and decided to stay. There are pools for women, men and monkeys to bath in and be blessed. A priest in charge of feeding the monkeys took us on a tour and coached us on how to feed the monkeys. It was an amazing experience.Читать далее

    Danger, danger! Indian tailor visit!

    2 мая 2023 г., Индия ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

We had too much fun visiting this very kind tailor and ordering a few lovely things to have shipped home. They could actually have things done and delivered to our hotel before we leave Jaipur in the morning!! But we are shipping our items because our bags are already full and heavy. You’ll have to wait and see what we got! 😁Читать далее
