      Istanbul

      August 29, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

      2. Die belebte Asiatische Seite
      3. Adana Kebab :-)

      Das Moscheenmeer und der Bosporus

      May 13, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      Istanbul - Istanbul

      Chic Airbnb in Historic Instabul

      August 2, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We arrived in Istanbul at around 1am after a few flight delays. We were excited to be coming into a new culture and language and also interested in finding out about the Turkish side is the story. The Greeks and Cypriots are not big fans of the Turks.

We got picked up from the airport in a disco taxi and dropped off on a random corner that the driver believed was our Airbnb.

The truth is we went way over budget on our accommodation in Greece so we had booked into a cheaper Airbnb in Istanbul which seemed quirky and cool in the pictures and descriptions. We got dropped off by our disco taxi in a super sketchy neighbourhood full of graffiti, random cats, broken walls and doors.

Our internet wasn’t working so Dale’s walked up and down the street looking for our apartment. He was convinced the address we’d been given was for an abandoned building without electricity so kept looking.

Nope. The abandoned building was our ‘Chic Airbnb in historic building in the heart of Istanbul’. The hallway was filthy, full of cats, paint peeling off walls and electrical wires hanging off the roof. There was a smell of smoke and dampness. Inside the apartment it was steaming. The place smelt mouldy and the couch and bathroom were full of mildew. The ‘spacious bedrooms’ were like closets and Ariah was too scared to sleep alone so jumped into our tiny bed.

It was quirky inside but there was no ventilation and the recent heatwave obviously had some bad affects on the apartment.

Next morning we moved out to another hotel with breakfast, a pool, sauna and day spa. So much for our budget.

      Last day in Istanbul

      August 8, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

      Miles: 5.0 Steps:13306
      Flights stairs: 10

We headed over to the Asia side of Istanbul today!! Took a tram across the river and a funicular up the hill to wander a bit. It was so different on that side! Much less chaotic, more friendly, less sales pressure … much more enjoyable time wandering the streets.

We tried to do some shopping - I’m not prepared to head into Egypt in a few weeks as i guess I can’t wear shorts anywhere. 😩 so I’m looking for capris, or long shorts or something and just can’t find anything. All the stores are obsessed with selling denim here, which is way too hot. May have to break down and buy a wrap around skirt to put over my shorts …

We went to dinner and I finally was able to see a whirling dervish. And then we headed over to the Hagia Sophia mosque at night - wasn’t prepared. Women have to cover their heads, shoulders and knees. 🤷. So we made up an outfit for me so we didn’t have to go back to our hostel to change. We couldn’t enjoy any of the mosques for long, as they require you to take off your shoes. The stench is REALLY bad at the entrance, and then in the entire mosque. Hard to describe, but it definitely effected our enjoyment of the visit.

So stray cats are EVERYWHERE in Istanbul. Like EVERYWHERE. They estimate there could be anywhere from 200,000 to a million! They don’t really consider them strays as much as “community owned”. There is food and water left out on every corner, as well as little “dog houses” - and they are the friendliest, least scared, healthiest looking cats I’ve seen.

Apparently cats are protected by law here. They view them as living beings, not commodities. They have a blanket no kill, no capture, zero tolerance on abuse policy punishable with severe jail time.

The Turkish have a long history with cats dating back centuries. Muhammed was the first to bless the cat and prohibit all abuse of it in 600 ad and ever since it has been revered by Islam. Kind of fascinating.

Kumpir, the turkish jacket potato where they whip up the inside with cheese, butter and salt until it goes SO creamy followed by subway style pick your own toppings. Istanbul

      November 22, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Let me try to divert my attention from the pre-flight preparations and give you an update from Istanbul!

I really didn’t know if I would like or hate Istanbul, but I knew it would be one or the other. On the one hand, I hate touristy places with no culture, and thought I don’t like huge crowds of people generally; on the other I heard many people loved Istanbul, so there had to be something to it.

Well on the first evening, walking from Taksim square to the busy shopping street to small alleyways, I was amazed at how different it is from Ankara. It is busy, and touristy in many places, but you can easily find authentic places in the city center and the place is very much alive. I liked it. Of course haga sofia, the blue mosque, and the highlights are beautiful to see, but the diversity of Istanbul was the most interesting to me.

You have streets where cars are parked that cannot possibly get out. Cars dont give you any space and scooters (the small motorcycles) race through every street; luckily Im pretty good at throwing my bike in between cars and walking through red lights, but they take it to another level. Its hectic. Then you have hundreds of men (almost exclusively) fishing on the bridges —I am pretty sure there is overfishing — and fish restaurants and snack foods all next to it. And them you have hipster areas with vegan food, third wave coffee, and art stores. There is a kurdish area with there own customs (some of whom kept shouting “Yesilgöz!” When I mention the Netherlands… and sudden popup clothing markets in the evening where cheap clothing is sold on carpets. And there was a filmshoot next to my hostel for a few days, which didn’t look high tech at all, but seemed to have the entire neighbourhood involved.

Yes, its busy, but the people that approach you can easily be shrugged off, and this cityhas much to enjoy. Oh, I didnt mention the organic market yet on Saturday, with loads, loads of fresh produce.( I bought way too much )

Now Im going to a place where el niño is making a mess, and I hope things will work out. I will update my location in the next footprint.

Oh, the picture? Yeah I had to go to a football match in Turkey. They go crazy over football here.

      Partynacht in Istanbul

      April 1, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C
