Hidden Venice Walking Tour

6.30pm we are at our meeting point, 'The Accademia of art' for our tour tonight called 'Hidden Venice' by Dark Rome Tours.
Martina is our guide and she is gorgeous and bubbly.
I am looking forward to this as it will occupy my mind which is sick with grief.
We walk through a quiet part of the city and it is peaceful.
Now I type as I walk and listen-
Venice is in a lagoon, the grand canal is the main highway.
There is only one piazza - St Marco, all other squares are called 'campiello' meaning field, because they were originally covered in grass
They are forever fighting a battle for the survival of the city re sinking. The islands originated from needing protection via the water from barbarian invasions.
They filled in the lagoon with wood and seeds and anything they could.
Prosecco is the wine they drink at 6.00pm. They eat 'chickpetti' and fish - nibbles. Only children are allowed to ride bikes here up to the age of 11. Adults get a fine.
We pass an old wooden building where the Gondola repairs and building occurs. Each person owns their gondola. They need to strong to steer and propel with one oar.
11 metres long, 50 different types of wood in the making of a gondala to make it flexible.
50,000euros to have one made. 300,000 for the licence. It is a privileged career. Over 400 hours of study. Only 350 gondoliers licenced in city. It is passed down through the generations to the males. They have only one female who stands in for others.
The production of oil, ie factories, is off the island.
Tourism is the only industry.
Giudecca, is the island over from us. I thought it was Lido!! Where the film festival is currently being held.
Lido is the strip of land 11 km long btn the Adriatic and the lagoon. A sandbar. It is far off. Damn.
For their justice system, people could put scrolls with 2 witness names into a sculptured lions mouth on a doorway to denounce a criminal.
A 'Fundamental' is a street with the water at the side.
Many passages.
Low buildings, the highest is 9 floors,
The plague killed thousands.
Very quiet and safe in the paths around Venice. Minimum crimes. As no where to escape.
Walking is the fastest way around. No cars. 30 mins walk from one side to the other.
The foundation is on mud, sand, wooden slats, it was built up. The wood petrified with the salt.
The walls of all buildings are made with iron bars for stability.
We walked to see St Marco from across the water. The lights are coming on all around us. With a pink sunset. The air is warm and the light everywhere is amazing, like a soft glow.
We hop on for our gondola ride, which is quiet and slow amidst the lapping water.
It drops us to the other side and the tour is over, we walked back to our hotel. Watched a movie called 'McFarland USA' with Kevin costner dubbed in Italian. I get the gist.
I have no appetite and not much sleep for me.Lue lisää

A city of silence

Athena called her dad this morning.
Angela, theen's mum, always asks to speak to me. She smiles and says she loves me and tells us to be good girls. She asks if I have met anyone. I say no. Too busy.
(I think her and I share an unsaid language of love and protection. Theen's always tells me I sound just like her actual mother, which I like. Athena says it is because our love is genuine)
Breakfast was in a different building around the corner from our hotel 'The Paganelli'. We just followed a girl there that looked like she had just woken up.
I had juice and scrambled eggs. Not up to eating much.
Julie called me via messager with Dad. They were out picking up a roast to take home for Fathers day. They couldn't get the video working, but I could hear them. I said turn your video camera on. Next minute I had bunny ears and whiskers!!! 😂 Their happy faces came on the screen, also with bunny ears and whiskers. Julie, Dad and I couldn't stop laughing. We looked so silly.
I wished my Dad a happy Fathers day and we blew kisses. Jules and I chatted about my baby kitten and both teared up. Dad told me I was very lucky to have Julie as my little sister. It was a lovely call.
On the way back I spied a church. It is so quiet here away from the crowds. I walked in and lit a candle and thanked my little fluffy best friend for all the love he gave to me and said goodbye, I love you 🐾 ♥
Once back in our room, the church bells rang out for ages, they said to me 'don' t be sad', 'don' t be sad'... 🐾
Today I intend to sit quietly and sort my case of clothes out, do some washing, read, blog and just be still.
Athena is off at 10:00 to check out the Venice shops. I told her she'd better come back safely. She said 'of course love'Lue lisää

Remember that little pizza place?

Athena arrives back to our room at midday. We decide to head out to find our little pizza place that we sat at for 2 hours on our trip 4 years ago-
(our tour guide, Steve, told us all to go and get lost in Venice. Didn't have to tell me twice, I was so happy to be set free. Athena and I wandered over the Rialto bridge, through skinny alleys and side way streets until we found a clearing with a little restaurant, we sat and had the best time)
Well I have a great sense of direction so off we went through the maze.
It was the same, the tight skinny streets all cool and shaded. We try to keep away from the crowds, so I do a left here and there.
We come across dead ends with a canal at the end. I can hear tv on above my head, and people arguing.
The sounds of living rooms pour out to us. Clothes hang on lines above our heads and the walls look so dilapidated.
This is what I enjoy. The real life. The feeling like you are sneeking into people's backyards.
Which way to turn? It doesn't matter. We don't know where we are.
We come across a couple of restaurants but the square is too skinny. It is not familiar.
'Keep going Sandra", I tell myself.
I see at the end of one street the sun hitting a wall ahead and know there is a square there. We walk out and my seeking is over.
I FOUND IT!!
We are very pleased with ourselves.
Athena orders a bruchetta and I a coke. (still not able to stomach anything)
Isn't it funny, I have always thought that I would come back here and try to find this place, as what an adventure it would be!
We head back, this time we follow the arrows to RIALTO and ST Marco amongst the shops and tourists.
We get to the Rialto Bridge and it is packed with people. The annual regatta is on. People with oars stand together and row fast as they can in boats wider than a gondola.
We look through some shops and they are full of the famous Murano coloured glass ornaments.
I am in search of a pencil and paper.
Jules wants Athena and I to do a drawing of our surroundings. Will give it a try.
Something pulls me to look in the windows for a little glass black cat.
After many yucky ones, I find one I like. I carry it close to my heart as we walk between the tourists and it makes me feel a little lighter.
I spy a lolly shop that makes me stop in my tracks. In I go, paper bag at the ready. Everything looks devine and so different.
Lollies make you feel good! But not too many.
We get to our hotel about 6.30pm and go sit on our precious little quiet balcony. I ask Athena if she wants to go out to eat, she says she's full from the bruschetta. Me, I am starving.
I pop out alone to buy some prosecco and a panini. But cannot find either.
I walk into a little restaurant, down the lane way next to our hotel, and ask do you do takeaway. They say yes. May I please have a lasagne? Absolutely.
I wait, families come in and are shown to their tables. I read the fish and crustacean posters on the wall.
The maitre d sidles up to me and asks 'do you want food or me?' in a jovial manner.
I laugh and point to the kitchen and say food.
Boldly I nudge him with my shoulder and say you're funny. We smile broadly together. I like a bit of mischief in a person.
My food is ready. The chef begins to put the parmesan on top and halts, looking at me. I instantly nod, smile and say a big yes please.
He then asks me if I am single. I say yes and from Melbourne. He jots down his number on the top of my container and says in broken English, I am from Lido, there is a festival there. Come with me tonight once I finish!
Oh dear, I thought. I smiled and said thank you, went back and inhaled my lasagne.
Off to bed and the TV signal goes. I call reception and the guy comes up and plays around with the remote and stuffs it up even more.
During this time we hear a blood curdling scream outside of a woman or child and someone yelling help. The guy says sorry bout the TV and Athena and he go to investigate whilst I lay in bed. They find nothing. Weird.
Once the guy leaves, I pull the plug out and back in and wholla it's back.
I search for English speaking channels and find a movie with Matthew
Mcconaughey. Slowly my eyes get heavy.Lue lisää

MatkaajaWhat a day in Venice! How wonderful! Getting lost in Venice .... that's it in a nutshell. Amazing that you found your restaurant. How brilliant. You did it. Love the sound of your search and then your wandering afterward. Glad you found your Venician cat. How very special. Laughed at how hunger set in. Off to find food. Chatted up by wonderful men, laughter, Parmesan (!) inhaling the food, bad TV, drama outside, turn it on, turn it off, fixed ..... and sleep.

Running away to Lido

It is 2.00 and I have done nothing.
Athena has been out and about.
She brings me a Gelati and tells me to go to Lido to the film festival. She will not come along.
I am tentative to go by myself as feeling sensitive and vulnerable. This is the total opposite of me when I travel.
I put makeup on, Athena does my hair and I say goodbye. She said she is proud of me.
I know I will regret not trying.
I chat to the reception guy whom let's me know everything I need to get to the film festival. He hands me his programme and tells me to say hello to Penelope Cruz, I tell him I will get her Ph no for him.
I catch the water bus which takes 15 minutes and is 14euro return. The bus bashes up the side of the vaporettas as people embark. The water outside is at my knee level. The bus is loud with gear shifts.
I hop off at Santa Maria Elizabetta station which is a 20min walk to the festival cinemas. A massive poster greets me at the station with a list of all the movies playing.
I take a photo of 'my movie' THE KING with Timothee Chalamet as the lead.
I love Timmy. He is my current favourite actor after seeing him in a movie CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. I am reading the novel whilst on holiday. Absolutely love it to pieces.
A man approx 70 asks me where do you catch the buses. I said I don't know, just got here myself. But I know it is only a 20min walk. We walk and talk. He said his wife is back at the hotel as she's not into all of this, I said my friend is back at our hotel. His name is Will and he is from Texas. His parents were into movie making. We got there and walked straight through with a bit of security checking for weapons.
Both of us are like kids in Disneyland. We watch the boats arrive with the stars. So happy, taking each other's photos in front of the cinemas. It is quiet and lovely walking around, a fabulous set up. The crowds come at 6.00pm when the movie premiers begin.
Will leaves after 1hr and me- not quite ready -stays. I walk into the info booth and ask what time is the red carpet for The King? The girl says 6:00pm. I think I can hang for a couple of hours. She tells me the cast are staying at The Excelsior Hotel right over there.
I go and sit on the steps out front of their hotel.
I overhear 2 young italian girls talking excitedly behind me, in Italian. I can make out that they are talking about hot male actors as they say the names in English.
So I butt in. I laugh and ask them who they are here to see- Timothee Chalamet.
I say me too. One of the girls, Francesca, speaks English well enough. We chat non-stop about Call Me By Your Name and how much we love it. Then she shows me a tattoo on her arm of the 2 boys in the movie. I say wow! She then shows me photos of her with Timmy, taken at the boat arrivals, and she is showing him her tattoo! Amazing.
All the while stunning Italian women in amazing dresses pour out of the hotel doors. Models, actresses and TV show hosts. Men are in tuxes and suits, everyone looks devine and very wealthy.
The other girl, Deborah, needs to catch the last train home at 5.00. Francesca walks her to the station and tells me she'll be back.
So I sit and wait and watch.
Francesca has a ticket for the world premier of The King which is on at 10.30pm tonight. She came here yesterday at 7am and lined up.
I had previously looked online but all the tickets were sold out. I did go to the box office earlier today to see if any tickets were avail but sorry sold out. The lady told me to come back 2hrs prior to the movie in case someone cancels but I didn't like my chances.
Francesca and I grab some chips and sit and eat and chat about our favourite stars. She loves Joaquin Phoenix, whom is in The Joker. She got his autograph when he got off the boat. This girl is so clever.
It gets to 7.00 and I think I had better head back to my hotel as I don't think I will get a glimpse of Mr Chalamet.
Francesca says why don't you try to get a ticket. I say ok, you come with me because you are lucky and she does.
I say hi to the ticket lady with a big goofy smile, I'm back. Would you please check for any cancelled tickets for the king? She said she will check. I was waiting for a no, but she said 'you are very, very lucky because I have one cancellation just come through now'.
I walk off with my ticket in my hand and think better tell Athena not to expect me home before midnight and that I was absolutely fine.
Francesca and I grabbed a bite whilst we waited for her friends to arrive.
I find out she is 16, she seems 21.
Her friends turn out to be about 6 girls all about 23, whom she met online at a Call Me By Your Name forum.
I tell you, even though these girls speak Italian, they certainly speak my language. They all met up in Crema where the film was shot-40mins drive from Como. The majority of them speak English, they show me their photos of Timothee.
Although, I am a ring in, the same age as their mothers and wearing a summer dress, they all talk to me as if I am one of them. It is so lovely.
Next they tell me we need to line up for the red carpet. I think we are going to watch the stars walk it, but no they tell me, if you have a ticket you walk the red carpet.
I almost stopped breathing.
WHAT!!!
Here I am in my little summer Hawaiian dress, sandals and backpack.
We all did it,
I WALKED THE RED CARPET AT THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL
What a crazy thing to do. I pass the crowds on my right and photographers on my left.
There is a massive screen right up in front of us. And there I am on it smiling!!! Couldn't believe it. Hilarious.
The girls tell me to get up to the railing/barriers so we can watch the actors go past as they enter the cinema. I ran my whole lower arm along that railing and stood ready to protect my spot.
It got hot standing there. I took out my programme and fanned myself.
Girls screaming just outside signalled the arrival of the cast of The King.
2 aussies are in it, Joel Edgerton and Ben Mendelson (whom I adore).
I see Timmy in his silver suit taking selfies with his fans just outside. He is great. Really is as excited as the fans are.
Then they walk in towards us, one after the other.
Joel walks past me.
I yell Hi Joel. He can clearly hear an Aussie amongst the sea of Italian murmurs. He quickly turns to me and waves and says 'Yo'.
I thought 'you're a good boy'
Next is Lily Rose Depp, Yep that Depp. The girls tell her she is beautiful and she faces us and says Thank you.
Then it's good ol Tim.
He zig zags across the lane way to each side.
Now at this time my phone battery is dead, my programme is in my hand and somehow I found a pen in my bag.
Everyone else has, a phone in their hand. I hold out the programme and pen.
He beelines for me.
He signs the back page of my programme in a couple of scrawls. He shakes my hand, looking me in the eye, great strong handshake. I say 'You are amazing and everyone here loves you' he replied 'thankyou very much, I really appreciate that' in his strong New York accent.
Huh!!!
I have no photos. I have a scrawl!
But I damn well know how he shakes hands.
The girls took video and photos so I gave them my email and asked if they could kindly send me some.
With that we followed them into the cinema. Our seats were all over the shop.
Then the director and cast walk in to take their seats. Standing clapping from all of us.
The movie begins.
It is based on a Shakespere play, and Tom Hiddleston did a version. So I know what happens.
Robert Pattinson played the French prince and was bloody brilliant. Where the hell is he today??
Joel did a great job and Timothee always lights up the screen.
I kept looking behind me to check if they were still there, sitting behind me. Yep.
The credits come up. The cinema stands and claps for about 6 minutes straight The actors bow and hug each other.
Everyone departs the cinema.
I exit a door where the cars are waiting for them. Well I might as well stand there.
I see Ben, come out and once again the only Aussie voice in the crowd yells 'Great job Ben' he looks at me and smiles.
I tell Joel the same and his head turns my way and he waves.
I don't think the Italians know these boys, but I do. I am fully sic over yoos mate.
I find a couple of the girls and follow them to the water bus which takes me from the festival direct to my hotel.
We hug each other goodbye and I thank them for being so awesome.
Athena is waiting up for me and I am home at 2.45am!!!
Need to blog this stuff now before I forget everything.Lue lisää

Last Pints in Venice

.................................................
Hi all its Athena here,
We are in an Irish pub having our last drinks in Venice before we choof off to Greece.
Considering I only had a couple of hours sleep due to someone galavanting with the stars last night & not having charged her phone so there was no way I could contact her.
Yes my friends Sandra rocked up at 2am this morning after having the time of her life. I'm so happy she forced herself in going as she met people she had a common ground with & was able to play with.
...........................................
Hi there, Sandra back again.
We caught the yellow Alilaguna boat to the airport. It took approx 1 hour.
Whilst on the boat, I looked up on YouTube, the red carpet for The King at Venice . I found it and watched a 49 minute video of the stars from red carpet arrival to entering the cinema and lived the whole thing again.
At the 47min and 19 second mark, from behind, I see Timmy walk straight to me. The bloody security guard stood in the way!!!
but I can see myself in there in my Gala summer dress, talking to him, shaking his hand him signing my programme.
I have only watched this about 5 times. Athena just rolls her eyes.
We caught our plane and sat there acting like stupid kids
A voice that sounded like Effie (Mary Coutas) to me comes over the speaker. I remember seeing the stage play 'Wogs out of Work' whilst at high school and thought that is my only reference for Greek training!
We kick down in Athens at 7.40pm.
From the plane the orange lights of Athens light up across the ground.
Woohoo
Athena Falls madly in love with our transfer driver. She is giddy.
We arrive late at night so hitting the hotel we dash up to the rooftop bar.
We have a major view of the Acropolis up high all lit up in a golden glow.
We just sit and stare.
The drinks are strong We only have 2 each and we end up smashed.
We talk about commitment vs just sex in relationships.
Athena can hardly stand.
I need the toilet urgently.
We somehow make our way down the stairs and our key fails. Shit!
We go to reception who fixes things. The elevator is full so we run up the stairs to the third floor, on the way I spy a WC and go in.
I hear Athena say 'that is the men's'.
I say be quiet as she is too loud and it is midnight.
Next I hear very loudly 'Omg that is a waterfall!!'
I say shuddup.
We get into our room thank God.
But I left my bag in the men's wc!!!
Goodnight at 12.09pm
(past midnight)
(I aim to have Athena in training for staying up late for Mykonos clubbing. Which is all she has talked about for 12 months! )Lue lisää

The Gods of Greece

Thanassi, Athena's cousin picks us up at 9.00.
Gorgeous man. Overjoyed to see Athena.
He drops us at the bottom of the path to the Acropolis and has already bought us our tickets to the Acropolis and museum. He gives us museum books and sends us on our way.
He will meet us at 10.30 at the museum Cafe.
We walk up through the olive trees on the marble stone path. It is extremely slippery.
The walk up is steep and you need to watch your step. You either walk on small rocks or smooth marble.
The Parthenon is huge and majestic. Sand coloured with columns contrasting against the blue sky.
Cannot take a bad photo of the Acropolis.
We walk around slowly. I see the Temple of Nike standing smaller by itself and the amphitheatre of Odean Horodes Atticus is below.
The temple I like is the Old temple of Athena. The one with the 4 ladies.
The temple was destroyed in a battle.
Greeks continue restoration.
The museum is used to hold all precious relics.
We head back down to the museum and find Thanassi sitting in the Cafe with a Greek coffee.
He is very affectionate and loving and I am endeared to him immediately.
Thanassi plays guide to us around the museum.
...
We first sit to watch a short film-
The Greeks built all temples for their gods. With 'The goddess Athena being the main one'.
It took 50 years to build the Acropolis. Finished about 552 bc.
The Greeks concentrated on location and proportions.
Using doric and ionic collumns
The goddess Athena statue was built in the middle of the Parthenon. But was destroyed later in a battle with the perusians.
The Parthenon is built in white pentalic marble.
In strict formality, with unique carvings all over. Friezes of battles, like the battle of troy.
Such fine work in marble blocks.
The centaurs are displayed and Thanassi and I look at each other as we are both saggies.
The goddess Athena was born from the head of Zeus.
....
We are then lead around the sculptures by Thanassi.
I love the frieze of 'Poseidon, Apollo and Aphrodite' sitting together in marble.
The 'Crown of the Acropolis' is a huge flower, which looks similar to French art nouveau.
There is a long frieze here of riders on horse back in battle.
My sister, Julie, an artist, creates beautiful horse sculptures herself. I compare the works and can see that Julie has the conformation and movement exactly the same as these thousand year old relics. So proves even more that she is doing an amazing job.
I take photos for her to see.
16,000 people visit the Acropolis per day in August
Beautiful museum, only 10 years old.
The Greeks are arguing with the English and French to give back their artworks. The English said you have no where to display. So the Greeks finally built a world class museum. And they wait still.
Thanassi drops us off at our hotel and will collect us later for dinner.
We head out for a walk around The Plaka.
The most beautiful shops are here.
Danger zone for Athena.
Must walk around here when you come to Athens.
We sit for lunch. Theens has souvlaki, I have a delicious veal, mushroom and potato dish. It is devine. I feed some to Athena as it is so good.
She agrees.Lue lisää

It'all Greek to me!

Thanassi takes us for a drive around Athens.
Parliament house.
Changing of the guards, (an event takes place on a Sunday)
We go to Constitution Hill. Where the Greeks fought to keep their independence. He takes us by everything but mostly speaks to Athena in greek so I miss a lot of information.
,,,,,,,,
Athena chats-
Thanassi takes us to a restaurant in the Palaia called Salty. The restaurant overlooks the bay with yachts & lots of poor people. Thanassi tells us he'll have to go and collect his family so they can join us for dinner.
We take a couple of selfies so we are happy. The waiter brings us a bottle of wine and a beautiful Greek salad.
Thanassi arrives back and we are introduced to his wife Linda, daughters Marina & Konstadina.
They are happy to see me after so many years so the 'Greek speak' begins.
The waiter brings us two beautiful platters of baked snapper. It was delicious. We both await the next course but it never arrives.
We secretly look at each other thinking where's the rest thanks!!!
Thanassi is ready to take us back to the hotel so all 6 adults get into a little Toyota (very funny). We say goodbye to the girls and we proceed to the hotel.
...............
Thanassi has taken us out for the evening with his family to a seafood restaurant. But not before showing us the sites. He let's me out at the original Olympic stadium and we stop to watch the guards march in their wonderful costumes. Doing a funny walk, or so I thought.
We drive around the massive Port with the enormous liners.
The sky is turning a light blue and the white buildings glow alongside the sky. Very pretty coastline.
The twinkling lights shine.
Thanassi collects his wife Lena and 2 daughters. Marina and Konstantina. We have baked whole snapper and salad drenched in olive oil and it is devine.
The olive oil here is light and sits like a coating on your tongue.
Lena is 32 and is currently assisting her father in his lawyers office, she is a cancerian and quiet. I tell her she is soft inside and hard on the outside. She agrees. Marina is 30 and tells me my name is Greek. I say I know. It means defender of men and derives from Alexander. Martina is a lawyer like her father. She is bright and speaks English well. I ask her to jot down places for us to walk to on Friday.
I like her as we both talk a lot.
A lemon drizzle cake and cream arrives. Yummo
Thanassi cannot have as he has diabetes. Only medicine and diet. I say my father is a type 2 and is on daily insulin injections. So I understand.
It is 10pm, Everyone has to work in the morning and we have to go tour the Meteora tomorrow. So it's home time.Lue lisää

Meeting nuns in the air

We have booked a day tour today to view and walk through the magestic Monasteries of Meteora.
I have, in the past, seen pictures of these ancient buildings sitting high atop of sheer mountains. But I always thought they were located in Nepal and thus unobtainable.
During my planning for this trip, I discovered they are in the north of Greece. Woo hoo, I am damn well going to see that!!
Thanassi kindly collected us at 6.15am and dropped us at Larissis station. We all enjoyed a coffee and croissants whilst Thanassi and Athena chatted away in greek.
Then our train arrives at 7.10 am and we say goodbye to Thanassi with big hugs.
Luckily we have a first class carriage and we settle in for a 4.5 hour ride.
I read and look out the window at the flat land and little farmlets.
Finally the train is speeding toward the mountains. I get excited when I spy the unusual sheer drop mountain structures of the monastries and stick my face to the window.
We arrive at Kalabaka station at 11:30am. A small country station in a one street town.
The small tour buses are lined up ready for their groups.
Ours is called 'Meteora Thrones' it is purple so I will easily remember it. Nick is our guide.
I am in awe of this scenery. My head is upward trying to spot a red terracotta roof atop of these rock columns.
In the 1300's the monks lived in the caves in the side of the mountains, but a leading monk told them to build up top of the rock so people would see how close they are to god and want to join Christianity.
Our first stop was 'St Nicholas' Monastery.
Athena and I walked up a steep cobblestone hill with much effort, then tackled the stone stairway on the side of the rock. Athena needed plenty of assistance but we got there.
At a small pokey entrance we handed over our 3 euro to the monk, chucked our shawls on and went to explore.
Inside was still pokey. We walked through cosy little rooms with long wooden benches and Byzantine religious artworks. The brick walls featuring throughout. Little rooms went off here and there like a maze.
Once we got outside to the covered balcony, the view was amazing. You can see far and wide so high up.
The Greek word, 'Meteora', means 'suspended in the air' and I certainly felt I was!
Poor Theens sat down in an alcove and told me to go ahead as she couldn't move. Fear and the shakes had got the best of her.
I scallywagged around investigating every nook and cranny and there are heaps. Unbelievable views everywhere you look. I got to the highest point at the bell tower loving every second until our time was up.
It took the monks 60 years to complete the buildings. They used scaffolding to pull up the materials.
There was 24 monasteries originally.
8 remain and only 6 of those are active.
The Turkish invasion caused a lot of fleeing to the monasteries.
It takes 5 years to study to become a monk. Their diet is vegetarian, with fish at Easter and Christmas.
They communicated via their bells.
16 nuns live here.
Our next stop is 'Varlaam'.
It looks high up from the front but the buses park in close behind the tall rock. A short walk around a massive boulder and a suspension bridge greats you.
Athena decided then and there to give this a miss!! People scared of heights can't do wobbly bridges!! 🤪
I took off, up, up, up the brick steps clinging to the side of the mountain. Sheer drops at my side. Wow! Feeling so good to be alive.
You can see the other monasteries from here perched atop the rock columns.
The poor priest at the front desk got a look at my cleavage whilst I sweated and struggled to get my shawl on. His face told me a lot and looked at me as if to say 'Are you for real lady?'
Whoops! I was hot and exhausted and my shawl was tangled up. Oh well.
Inside Varlaam is beautiful. Small brick buildings, topiary bushes everywhere, a massive rotunda for the bells. Looks like a fairytale scene in the sky.
I enter a doorway and am faced with a massive wooden barrel. Of course the wine makers.
Very peaceful.
This is my favourite one!
I make my way back down to the buses and to Athena, while some ning nong is getting photos of himself hanging onto the staircase wall. If he slips, he dies. Made me ill to watch him.
Athena and I grab some selfies and look through the stalls of souvenirs then onto the mini bus.
I am sitting on the aisle and my seatbelt clasp is digging into me. Athena has wide shoulders so I cannot sit straight up on my seat, but am slightly tilted. (I end up with a huge purple bruise on my buttocks)
We are told the highest peak is 615 metres and this area was once a lake of pillars.
Game of Thrones used Meteora in the 'Sky cell' cave scene with Tyrion.
I let out a loud woo hoo on the bus at the mention of GOT. The producers covered the existing buildings with clouds.
We stop at a rock ledge for our panoramic photos. It goes way out and is high above the ground and I cannot believe I walked out on that without fear.
A guy called out 'where is game of thrones girl' and it turned out to be psycho man. He got me to take shots of him doing full on kicks in the air like judo. I made him do it about 6 times and he was spent. Couldn't cope any more. Ha, ha haha. Suffer.
From here we can see everything.
Including the 'Holy Trinity' monastery, built in the late 14th century. It was used in James Bond's 'For your eyes only'.
Final stop is 'St Stevens'.
This is huge and is the nunnery.
Easy to get to, Athena comes along.
Once again pretty and serene.
There are wooden seats inside that all have arms and are in a round. Like a meeting place.
I sat in one and asked Athena to take my photo.
Next minute, this scornful looking nun tells me off for crossing my legs whilst sitting. 'you do not cross your legs whilst sitting!!!'
Athena started to giggle, the nun turned to her and told her off for using a camera. Well I lost it then, I had to walk away giggling like a child.
I reckon if I was brought up by those nuns, I would be the naughtiest kid on the planet.
Our tour over, we were dropped off at the station at 4.30pm to catch the 5.15pm. (I have been told not to rely on Greek transport so was a bit sceptical)
It arrived on time. Hooray!
We were in 1st class and I had a nap. Of course Athena took a photo of me!!!
We left our little first class carriage as Athena informed me that a pungent smell was coming from someone.
We stood up next to the snack bar and sang french songs to each other looking out the window, (in memory of our first Europe trip)
Whilst I have been blogging Theens has been on Greek Tinder. Now she decided she's staying and will get married.
Athena likes beards these monks may be her type!
Our train ride home was interesting. Just stopped. 40mins, no announcement.
I annoyed Athena no end asking her to ask someone what is happening.
She said 'no one knows'.
Lights off, engine off. We are in a sheep paddock halfway home and it is getting dark.
The conductor passes us and always weirdly smiles at me and grabs my shoulder as he walks past.
I thought maybe it is good he knows me in case we have to find other ways to get back to the hotel.
We went back to our seats after an hour. Athena fell asleep and I chatted to the Scot with the American wife and the Japanese couple. We spoke about everything.
Studio Ghibli was a highlight.
After a 2 hour delay. We got to Athens station where no taxi wanted us as our hotel is too close to make it their worthwhile. Athena was getting frustrated.
"Athena here..... Getting a cab in Athens is like finding a husband on Tinder.... Non existent!!!!!!.. There were 100 taxi's & and not one was interested in driving us to our hotel. I was asking & they were nodding oxi (no). Sandra & I finally found a lovely man & he said yes!"
Back in the hotel, I am starving. I go grab some Singapore noodles at the local Chinese shop.
Athena went straight to sleep as she was well and truly over it by 12.45am.Lue lisää

Blonde foils thanks

Breaky at 8.00am
We have booked a 10.00am appointment at the hairdressers, Theens and I, as our roots are a disgrace. Eddy is our hairdresser, whom speaks English well, and is silly and cheeky, and I like him a lot.
He does a great job of our roots. I book a 4.30appt to have blonde highlights.
My bank contacted me about fraudulent activity on my card. So I called them from reception.
I had to argue with reception man re CBA reverse charges call. He told me I had to pay for the call and wouldn't listen to me. I finally got through and sorted out my funds.
Theens cousin, Paul and Christina picked her up at 2.30pm for a catch up.
I ate chinese food in my room and watched moreTimothy C on YouTube. I also sat up on the rooftop in the wind by myself lots listening to videos on headphones.
I went to the hairdressers at 4.30pm and had a great time. They look after you here. 'Como' salon in Athens. I came out so so blonde!!
The souvenirs here are not 'made in Greece' I discovered, however it is written as 'made by Greeks' !
Dinner at our plaka restarant again and we eat like vacuum cleaners. Both have the veal mushroom and potato, because Athena would not stop talking about it yesterday.
Walked all around the Plaka, bought some small souvenirs. One old man gave me lollies, then kisses then a couple of freebies. I walked out all emotional. Athena teared up too. Some of these Greeks give out so much love.
Walking the streets I picked up, whilst sucking a ventolin. 'Hello princess'. (it is the hair) I just looked at him and kept walking. Athena laughed at this poor guys attempt.
To the hotel rooftop bar we go, which is really our home, saying all the while 'God I love Amanda, she is amazing, I just love her.'
Our hotels have been right in the middle of everything, and we really appreciate this. Along with breakfasts and transfers.
Thank you Amanda, you are always our hero, whenever we explore.
The golden Acropolis is there before our eyes.
Once again, we get drunk, and we are the last ones up there and get kicked out.
Waddled down to bed, Athena begins snoring and that's the end of our day.Lue lisää

On the edge of a volcano

Our transfer to the Athens airport is due at 7.45am. We get up at 6.00.
We grab some breakfast at 7.00.
The restaurant is one floor below us.
In the lift, I press the 'R'. Athena immediately tells me off 'where are you going?' and she presses floor 6.
Me, I am confused-as the bar is up there??
Athena looks at me as if to say, yes my hand automatically goes to 6.
Doesn't that just say too much!
I grab some of the sweet pastries on display at the breaky bar. Baklava, bougasta, My plan was to eat one a day. But Athens has been too fast. And it has slipped us both by.
We summed it up with-
Day 1 Thannassi's tour of Acropolis and museum
Day 2 Meteora
Day 3 Hair, bank calls and The Plaka
So now it is over and out.
Trying to get the lift down, with our cases, to reception was impossible. A truckload of Americans arrived yesterday and only 2 people plus luggage can fit.
Everyone is off to breakfast, so it is full each time it gets to us.
Finally I push in and get down.
Another transfer and 45min plane trip.
I capture on camera the many brown islands below from the plane window.
OMG just landed in Santorini!!!
I feel like site seeing is done with and holiday begins.
The island is flat all around the airport.
Terrain is like Phillip Island. With not much infrastructure.
A single road into Fira. The sun is fully shining.
White and sand coloured buildings.
We go toward the back of the hill top of Fira. It is smaller than I imagined.
The road is simple
We hop out with a short walk to the top, dragging our heavy luggage up across the cobblestones, and this amazing view of the caldera is before us.
Dark deep blue ocean meets baby blue sky, with the remnants of arms of a historic volcano circling around a centrepiece of land.
It takes your breath away.
Our hotel, The Theoxenia, is on the main top path and a 2 min walk.
We haul our luggage up steep marble steps to the reception desk.
Our room is simple and it has Athena's main requirements
-a hair dryer, kettle and iron with board.
For me it has a balcony. We have a half view of the street shops and half view of the ocean.
For me this is heaven.
We head straight out, as is lunch time.
'Fanari restaurant' is our choice.
Away from the 'tourists' we took a quiet table overlooking the ocean.
The world below us spread out in a raw form. It is like we are viewing the earth from a satellite. So high up.
Athena has a massive red octopus tentacle and I choose shrimp. They are served with carrots and rice cooked so divinely.
We devoured our meals within minutes. Athena and I looked at each other and expressed that we were still wanting more food so we shared a full size calamari.
The waiter took a couple of snaps of us with our glasses of wine and we were happy.
Athena had the waiter very attentive toward her as he fully appreciated some Greek conversation, however her preference was more toward the wine.
.......
Athena has a few words-
We found ourselves very sleepy and we decided to get back into the room & take a nap..... Yes your all thinking we have a hard life atm.
We woke up & decided to have a coffee and baklava. We then went to the rooftop to watch the sunset.
.........
At bedtime,
whilst I am reading my novel (Call me by your name), I ask Athena if she would like me to read aloud. She permits me to. I wish to share with her this magnificent story.
My voice is monotone and soothing. Athena gets all cosy and she eagerly hangs on every word.
She reacted perfectly to this beautiful prose that fully captures the innocence of first falling in love with someone.
Athena-Wow, that is beautifully written!
Me-I know, isn't it just!
Shorty after, I hear her snoring.Lue lisää

Dreamcatcher

Up for breaky at 8.00am on the rooftop.
It is beautiful but I want more sleep as woke at 4.00am
Cheese pastries and coffee. Boiled egg, fruit, and breads sitting at the very top of the hill looking across to the volcano.
Now for our sailing trip around the caldera. (which means volcanic crater fallen into the sea)
Met the driver at the prehistoric museum at 9.15am
(a 4min walk from hotel)
Rode the mini van to the island end opposite to Oia.
(Did I say this place reminds me of Phillip Island, the scale of the land mass I mean)
The mariner is full of yachts.
We board the red and white waved catamaran, which is gorgeous.
I am over excited. Which is a good sign.
We are ushered under a cream canopy onto soft red padded seating around a table.
The catamaran seats 34
It is a magnificent structure.
They serve wine to us at an open bar.
We are sat opposite 2 men.
Chris and Mikah
They are originally from San Diego, now live in Chigago and are happily married.
We chat and discover that Micah and myself are both Saggitarians. This makes the convo go in a totally wild trajectory.
Chris is a Capricorn so is more laid back and looks after the finances.
Basically our entire conversation is how they are a mirror image of Theens and I, regarding personality and behaviours.
Micah and I can take a mean photograph. Chris and Athena cannot.
We, the Saggies, are the adventurers the risk takers, always wanting to be busy and at the front of the line. The other 2 are less so, instead, happy to follow along but willing to give it a go.
For the entire sail we all 4 talked, non stop, whilst drinking our wine.
We stopped for a swim. Athena stayed on the boat.
The water was cold at first then divine. Armed with my noodle, I paddled around. The two boys jumped in the sea 💦 and we hung together. I was fascinated with looking under the catamaran. Loved the big red looming form above my head.
After relaxing for 10minutes in the water we set off.
We spied 2 webber bbqs hissing and steaming at the back of the catamaran so we knew lunch was near.
We spent hours talking to our new friends. The boys have been married for 2 years and this holiday was a late honeymoon.
We stopped off for another 15 Min swim and Athena stayed on board taking pics from the netting. Micah and I swam underneath her and splashed up to her like kids. She was telling us off and it made us do it more!!
Now lunch is served.
We eagerly sat waiting to see the dishes to be devoured.
Bbq chicken and pork, greek salad, penne covered in tomato and cheese. Bread with olive tapenade, tzatziki and olive oil soaked baked potatoes.
I had a second helping!
We stopped to view the red beach and the white beach. Which ended up being coves with coloured cliffs.
Then after many wines, we lazily, drunkenly made our way back to the mariner.
At one point I went to the loo onboard. This was an experience. Getting down the vertical ladder, then trying to sit whilst being heaved up and down all over the place!
I loved looking out the porthole. The blue water at face level waving along with the white foam waves. Memorising, could've stayed there a while, but Athena was at the top telling me to hurry up as she needed to go.
The sail was over and absolutely perfect. A quick van drive back.We said goodbye to the boys and headed back to our room.
Gelati time. Mango and lemon for Athena and I love my lemon 🍋.
I comatosed into a 10min nap, whilst Athena went to the rooftop to sunbake. I went up too for a short time.
Nobody told me that Santorini turns you into a sloth.
We lay on our beds, with our balcony doors open to the soft sounds of the crowds below and music pumping somewhere.
The blue sky invades our every sense and we are still.
Lacking any will to explore. We have 2 more days yet.
Tommorow we will see Oia.
At 6.00, Athena asks me do you want to head out. My reply is a big fat 'Yes'
We walked to the left, facing Fira, and meandered upwards behind the elegant villas and expensive hotels. You can see the island at 360 degrees from here.
Heard tinkling bells ringing and watched the mules, one behind the other, carrying loud obnoxious Americans upward through the streets. I didn't enjoy seeing this.
By 8.00pm we were hungry.
Went back to Fanari as it is quiet and the food is good.
Athena had chicken souvlaki,
I the mixed fried seafood which included, calamari rings, king prawns, sardines and baby octopus with rice and carrots.
I am seafood hooked, line and sinker, lol.
Our waiter, Vagelli, was so excited to speak Greek to a customer he hovered over Athena like a stalker. He even took her plate to remove the chicken off the skewer for her. She tried to take the plate back but he was not having it.
So full of sun and fresh air and food, we rolled off to bed.Lue lisää

Oia

Another slow morning.
Breakfast at 9.00 so Athena can sleep in.
I take a while to get moving as need to complete x8 footprints of my blog.
Athena goes to the rooftop and bakes in the sun.
At 12.00 I am over blogging and want to see the pool.
I run upstairs, grab the girl and off we head.
The pool is located at a different hotel. It is stunning. A spa hotel.
We happily sit in one of the white cabanas and order our first cocktail.
Athena orders a gin base, for me it's rum.
The sun is directly above our heads and the heat is melting our thoughts away.
We both slip into the pool and it is wonderful. A waterfall down one end a bar down the other.
Swim for ages. I realise this is Athena's first time in the water on this trip.
Another cocktail 🍹and we sink into oblivion. We are so relaxed can hardly talk.
To make things worse, I decide to get a massage. A massage at a spa!!
I go into the expensive looking hotel wearing wet bathers. They treat you like royalty. The smells, the music, the darkness. Pure luxury.
I floated back to Athena all dreamy like. She was on her 3rd drink. I asked can you stand? She said sure love. And she could.
At 3.30 we headed back to our hotel, in bathers and towels, through the tourist throng, to get ready for Oia.
We could so easily spend a day basking in the sun here. It takes all our will to move and do something.
We catch the local bus to Oia. It costs 1.80euro and takes 25mins. The road to Oia from Fira is cut along the top of the crater. It is windy and on a cliff edge. I think these drivers are amazing, but I have a fear element going on here too!
We hop out and follow the 'throng' up through the x2 people wide paths.
I had previously read how to get to the best positions for the famous blue church domes. So on seeing the jewellery store on the corner, I veered left.
Here they are! Wow, they look amazing. We squish in and take our many shots as quick as possible.
Will try to get closer, so I urge Athena to just follow close behind me and I am off again.
We find a spot directly over the top of them and snap away. The blue colour is in perfect contrast to all the white.
OK time to eat.
We choose a close restaurant and sit and have moussaka. A small kitten pops over the seats and says hello. I immediately am distracted by him. There are many small cats around here, but they all look healthy and clean.
The moussaka is yummo, bechamel sauce, cheese, bolognese, eggplant and potato. We scoff it down. Athena is so full.
Now, it's time to watch the sunset.
Hundreds of people are lined along the paths and nooks and crannies of the Incline.
We take up a position on some steps and wait for an hour with everyone else. A drone buzzes above our heads and I wave at it.
The sun slowly sets and we await that magnificent red golden glow when it meets the water.
But no, we have a thick cloud today. The orange sun disappears before we are all ready and the sunset is over.
I say how disappointing for everyone. But it's not really. We have seen this sun set the past 3 days so haven't missed a thing.
The crowd moves out and it is slow going one behind the other toward the buses.
On the bus ride back, Athena turns to me and says 'I'm free' she claps her hands.
I ask what do you mean?
She tells me she is free of my itinerary.
I say not quite yet, we still have little venice and the windmills.
She continues with 'I'm free'
So I tell her to pass me her mobile so I can delete all her photos she has taken whilst following 'my itinerary'
She sheepishly declines me and succumbs to agreeing she wouldn't have missed anything.
Back at our hotel, Athena jumps straight into bed. I go out and grab a coke and a Gelati. Lemon and raspberry.
I read my novel out loud again until I hear snoring, then I know it is time for sleep.Lue lisää

Leaving Santorini

I woke at 6. 00am and blogged. The streets of Santorini are empty, with the exception of deliveries.
I hear a loud tinkling sound coming from the street. I rush out onto the balcony, and see 10 loose mules running the streets. They follow one another. People are yelling at them from their shop steps and waving arms. They all turn a corner and disappear.
Breaky at 8.00am as we have an early transfer at 9.15 to the ferry.
Last time up on our beautiful rooftop having a massive breakfast.
2 clean white liners sit below us and I know I will never see a view quite as unbelievable as this one of the Santorini Caldera again in my life.
The hotel porter drags our bags to the transfer pick up point, at our pool hotel. We share with a couple from Altona Meadows. We all chat, including the driver. (whom when he opened his arms for the luggage, I took it as a cuddle and went in for one, he smiled and hugged me tight)
The ferry port sits low to the far, far left of Fira.
I look at postcards by George Meis. I want them all.
I ended up with a 2020 calendar, for an assortment!
A man with a Seajets sign for Mykonos begins to shout to us all.
We all follow him in a mass wave. Never have I seen people drag suitcases as fast, over the cobbles.
Our ferry backs up and drops it's massive walk planks.
Hundreds unload and disperse amongst the crowds.
Then a bloke blows a whistle and we storm the planks like warriors.
We walk onto the metal into the mouth of a massive creature. You just walk fast and straight. Signs above say 'Luggage'. We quick drop on the shelves available and head upstairs to the lounge.
We have allocated seat numbers on our tickets, so we squat down in nice comfy seats and the ferry begins to move while people still come up from the hull.
We sit listening to gossipy Aussie women behind us.Lue lisää

Mykonos

We arrive in Mykonos. We offload from the ferry. And find our transfer to Petinos Beach Hotel.
The area is call Platys Gialos.
The water here is a mix of blue, green and aqua. It is so different from anything I have ever seen.
Our hotel room looks directly onto the sandy beach, covered in loungers and beach umbrellas. Our view is from the righthand side facing out.
We are in a Cove, with restaurants and cafes lining the beach in an arc.
White buildings dot the hillside above amongst the brown rocks.
The pool is a quick walk down the steps from our room. Athena immediately puts on her bathers and she goes down to bake. Her aim is to get brown. I go to the local shop and buy my supplies, chocolate and a lilo.
Our room is pure white with whitewashed curved cement walls.
The shower is the size of a dining room. I have a shower and feel like I'm in a cave. It echoes in here. Cool.
We are very lazy at this point and our thinking brains have turned off. So much so that Athena said she didn't want to go out for dinner or to explore.
At 6.00pm she has her nightie on and is giving herself a facial.
I head across the street and grab a pizza... Continued
She tells me to have a shower so she can blow dry my hair. I do it. She dries my hair whilst I sit in my white fluffy bathrobe.
I hear clapping, laughing and greek music coming from outside.
I ask Athena, when is our 'Greek Night'.
Um!
We forgot greek night!!!!
Athena says 'It's ok, we' ll do it another night'
Me, panicked, runs to reception and asks how often is greek night?
Wednesdays and Sundays.
We fly out Sunday.
I let Athena know and she says she she is disappointed and really wanted me to see it.
I clapped my hands and said get up, get dressed,
WE ARE GOING, NOW!
5 mins it took us to get ready.
We invited ourselves in at The Blue Myth and sat at the bar. Men in black tshirt and and pants were dancing to traditional songs.
We sculled a couple of bourbans quickly.
Then that wonderful 'Zorba' music began.
I love this. Really gets me excited. Slowly the boys move arm locked, side by side and it speeds up and takes you along.
OPA!!
We get up and have a dance, with old and young. Reminds me of a wedding. Thank goodness it is an open air restaurant.
We do the conga inside and outside.
A young tall kid steps on my foot and breaks my toenail!
I keep dancing!
At around 12.30 it slows down. We creep into bed all buggered.Lue lisää

Old Town

Breakfast is amazing across the road at The Blu Myth. They are serving brownies!!
I have grabbed, olives, pistachios, dolmades. Yum
Athena wants to sit by the pool. I want to explore, so I leave her to catch the bus to Mykonos old town. It takes me 5 minutes and I am here.
I wander straight into the shops. White walls with white painted cobblestones everywhere.
EVERYWHERE
I love the blue, red, aqua painted door and window shutters.
I buy a small stone boat and chat to the shop keeper.
I just walk. Forever. It is a maze around here of skinny pathways.
I take a hundred photos. Loving the scenes of steps and stairways and bright pink bougainvillea hanging over head. A stark contrast against the sunlit white.
I walked upward to the windmills. Absolutely amazing. Loved them. The wind up here is something else though. Could not hold my phone as had to hold my dress down.
Full on wind.
Walked down to Little Venice. Small little houses with no entry path in front. The waves come up and rise and spray everywhere all over the paths.
Walked into the interior paths. Took photos. Of cats. Lying asleep in the shade somewhere. Loved seeing their relaxed bodies whilst people walk past.
How clever to make the town like this.
A white maze of wonder.
I came across an outdoor movie theatre. It plays tonight at 8.30 and 10.30pm.
I try to make out the movie name with the red umbrella on the poster and the actors names below in english.
Timothy Chalemet headlines along with Elle Fanning.
Well that's it I am in.
Ha, ha, ha. Tra, la, la!!
I realise it is Woody Allen's latest movie - 'A Rainy Day In New York'
I message Athena to see if she is interested in going to the movies under the stars tonight?
Absolutely,yes, sounds wonderful.
Hooray!
Walking along a bit further, I came out the other side of Little Venice and sit at a cafe for a bite. I face the green and blue ocean.
Little wooden boats bob madly around. A smaller brown one was thrown around so much, I could not take my eyes off it. It had a special little dance.
Ready to head back to our hotel.
Walked back through and easily caught a bus back to Petinos Beach.
Athena was still on her lounge bed and still sunbaking.
I went up and blew up the lilo, I had bought yesterday. It looks a bit unstable. Think I may try it in the pool tomorrow as the wind may take me out to sea.
Athena messages would you like a bourban?
This is not a question that ever needs to be asked of me. There will only be one answer.
We sit in the restaurant overlooking the beach and drink and share our day.
Then we both hit the sun loungers with our bathers on to catch the last rays of the day at 5.30pm.
I pace myself to get ready for a long night of dancing. Athena says she want to go to Scorpios beach club.
As this is her wishlist for this trip, I tell her, 'You lead the way and I will follow.'
She never moved from her bed. At 8.00pm (me getting restless) I say come on, let's go. She instead puts on her Pj's and says we'll do it tomorrow.
OK, but I lay there awake listening to the nightclub music pumping loud until 4.00am. My body aching to go.
But I did not want to do this without her as she chose this particular thing to do for her birthday.
I am wondering if she will fulfil her wish yet, or leave for home regretting she missed out!Lue lisää

Cina Manto 'A Rainy Day In New York'

We catch a bus to Old Town Mykonos at 7.00pm.
Athena is fascinated when we hit the floor running in the town. She is wide eyed at the colourful windows and doorways. 'Love the blue the most' she says.
I manoeuvre through the streets in the direction I walked earlier today, when I first discovered the cinema.
I open Google maps and find I am 2 mins away. So we follow the dotted blue line. And here it is. A small alcove under trees, with chairs all lined up. It is beautiful. Reminds me of many old fashioned movies.
The ticket lady will appear at 8.00pm, so we hit a restaurant at the corner.
Athena has the fried squid and I choose the prawns in mustard and garlic sauce.
OMG. Devine.
They give us a shot of something (not Ouzo) and it ends the meal well.
We get our tickets and take a seat in the open air.
Kittens are everywhere sneaking around our feet. Meowing for food. I fight my natural urge to pick them up.
Some people are eating dinner, some drinking.
I have an ice cream that I left too long and it has melted everywhere.
The movie starts bang on 8.30pm and we sit back and be entertained in the manner of Woody Allen.
I can see Timothy has soaked up the Woody Allen mannerisms and his true New York voice is over emphasised in this film. Elle Fanning plays cutsie girlfriend and Selena Gomez plays the sharp, witty distraction. Jude Law is unrecognisable with an American accent.
The movie tries, as always, to be New York cynical, only to find out that the truth of any matter will set you free.
It ends and I expect the lights to come up in the cinema. But there are only side lights and tree lights.
We are tired and head directly to the buses for our hotel.
On our way through, we see many gay men out and about together. The bars are full of them and an art gallery has an exhibit of paintings of men laying around naked.
Athena looks at me sideways, and all I say is these boys know how to enjoy life don't they!

A cyclone kind of day!

The weather has taken a turn this morning.
Overcast and extremely windy.
I believe my lilo will up and fly off within seconds.
For breakfast, I have greek Donuts dipped in honey and sesame seeds. So good.
Athena is off heading to Old Town today. I told her to hold onto something as she will get blown away.
I am too relaxed and am reading. In bed. The wind is howling.
Now it's raining.
I am thinking Athena will come back to the room! But no, she endures the elements.
I head outside along the wooden planked pathway between the restaurants and the beach front.
Loving the empty beach lounges, normally covered in colours and bodies.
I settle on a restaurant 'Anios' Beach Front and order the Greek speciality, lamb Kleftiko. I ask for some Tzatziki too.
Two women sit next to me, whom we danced with at the Greek night. I smile and imitate dancing and they copy.
A DJ pump's out tunes that keep you in the holiday mood.
Pump and soothe, pump and soothe.
Wham's Club Tropicana plays around here like it is the island's theme tune.
Georgios Panayiotou is extremely popular here.
I went off to the pool to look at Facebook. Athena got back and was a bit windblown.
We went to the pool restaurant for a bourban.
I pulled up Carolyn's email of photos of her trip and I show our waiter, Panos, whom is in the background of one of her shots.
I ask him, is that you? He claps and points out your table, to me, Carolyn, and he calls everyone over. He remembers you and Emily xx How gorgeous is that!Lue lisää

Our last day

8.00 breaky - so much food!!!
I call Pete to confirm if she can collect me from the airport. She wiill do, hooray!!
She is shopping for some essentials, like milk and chocolate with the kids. I see Aidan and Charlotte's smiling faces in our video chat. Aidan tells me he found some bird eggs, which is gorgeous.
Athena says she doesn't want anyone to come get her.
Me, I want to see Pete's big smiley face and get a big cuddle.
At 10am we sit by the pool. It is still windy, but the sun is out and I read.
An hour later, I go up to get my lilo.
It tries to get away from me, but I wrestle and succeed.
In the pool is a different matter. Oh dear. I try to be quiet so not to disturb the sun bakers, but that made it worse. On, off, on, off, straddled, off. Mmmm. Splash, giggle. Slowly I somehow get my balance and just stay there, face down, floating away. With minute movements, I get comfy and woo hoo, I am set.
Trying not to drown, I keep my head above the water line and proceed to fall asleep in the hot sun. (I felt sure everyone was wishing they had a lilo too, hey Carolyn?)
I head into Old town once more, I lovr strolling and looking at the shops here. Lots of hand made art.
I head into a bakery and totally fall in love. All the Greek honey soaked goodies are here. The spinach and feta pastries.
I sat and ate a walnut honey biscuit. It melted in my mouth and tasted like Christmas. I bought 4 more and some other things.
(Bakeries and bookstores are my archilles heel)
(A girl just walked past me eating a Gyro. She exclaimed omg! this is so good.)
Well I teared up, didn't I.
I suddenly felt so sad to be leaving all this amazing European/ Mediterranean food behind me.Lue lisää
