      Oh nein!!!

      Leider habe ich etwas erwischt! Es gab einen Riesen „Bäng“ Und der Reifen war kaputt. Die Stimmung ist jetzt ein bisschen getrübt! Wir müssen auf einen Abschlepper warten. Könnte 2 Stunden dauern.

      Felkirk Water Wheel

      The great thinker Arcemedies was correct. A space of water weighs the same no matter what you put in the water. Displacement offsets and the weight stays the same.

      Put this idea into practice with some steel and technology, and you solve the problem of moving canal boats up hill. Instead of a lock there is a huge water wheel.

      Watch a YouTube if you want to know about the science, but trust me, watching the wheel go around and thinking about the mechanics kept us occupied for several hours.

      The photos don’t do it justice, you’ll have to come and see it for yourself. Or, better yet, come and rent a canal boat for the week and ride the wheel and see Scotland from the canals. We won’t tick that box off my list this trip, but we will one day.      Les mer

      Glasgow Part 1

      Wir sind heute durch die Vorstädte in windeseile marschiert, da wir verschlafen haben. Es lässt sich schnell zusammenfassen: wir wissen nicht was häßlicher ist, die Gebäude oder die Menschen in den Vororten. Waren wir vorher zumindest beeindruckt von der feinen englischen Art, sind wir zunehmend enttäuscht von dem Menschen hier. Wir wünschen uns die Highlands zurück, wo die Landschaft noch schön und die Menschen noch nicht so viele waren. In den schönen Ecken in Glasgows, sieht es aus wie in der Hamburger Hafencity. Sonst ist Glasgow voll und wuselig. Von dem Schock erholen wir uns auf einem schönen Campingplatz und versuchen unser Glück morgen in Glasgow erneut... vielleicht finden wir den besonderen Charme Glasgows von dem die Eingeborenen sprechen.Les mer

      Glasgow Tag 2

      Von unserem Campingplatz am Stadttand , sind wir dann am Vormittag nocheinmal nach Glasgow hineingefahren, um die Stadt nochmal ein wenig genauer unter die Luppe zu nehmen. Aber trotzdem Glasgow konnte seine zweite Chance nicht verwandeln, und so müssen wir leider berichten, dass wir Glasgow wirklich enttäuschend fanden. Zwar gab es heute hier und da mal die etwas schöneren Ecken Glasgow zu sehen, aber so richtig war es das auch alles nicht. (Ein Pub in dem wir waren war, war ansonsten aber ganz gut.)
      Von Anfang an hatten wir daher vor, uns lieber in ein Museum zu begeben, und so fiel die Wahl auf ein wie es schien Technikmuseum in einem interessanten Neubau am Ufer. Doch wie sich dann herausstellte versteht man hier etwas anderes unter Museum, und so war es trotz toller Exponate eher eine Art Kinderspielplatz.
      Nachdem unsere Nerven also mal wieder blank lagen, machten wir uns auf die Stadt zu verlassen.
      Der bisher einzig gute Lebensmittelmarkt ganz Schottlands ist übrigens ein alternativer Laden im Studentenviertel.
      Und, jede deutsche Kleinstadt ist um längen schöner als alles was hier Steht, daher gibt es außer dem ein oder anderen Bild aus dem Museum heute nur Bilder von Städten auf unserer Deutschlandwanderung.      Les mer

      Highlands -Oban- Loch Lomond

      Heute morgen ging es um halb neun Richtung Highlands . Was sehr mystisch durch den vielen Nebel aussah. Leider hat es auch fast durchgehend geregnet. Trotz alle dem eine traumhafte Landschaft. Weiter ging es nach Oban angeblich ein kleines Fischerdörfchen was sich aber doch als größer erwiesen hatte. Dort bekamen wir eine Stunde Aufenthalt für eine Entdeckungstour und zum Mittagessen. Das bewies sich als sehr stressig.Wir schafften gerade das Essen runterzuschlingen und entdeckt haben wir gar nichts🤷‍♂️aber uns war allen schlecht vom schnellen Essen. Danach ging es zum Loch Lomond für eine Schiffahrt die wir Muttis bestreikten,wir brauchten Bewegung und sind um den See auf Entdeckungstour gegangen oder man kann auch sagen wir machten einen Verdauungsspaziergang. Nachdem der Rest der Mannschaft wieder vom Bootsfahren zurück kam ging es zum Hotel. Auf der Heimfahrt riss natürlich der Himmel auf und es hörte schlagartig auf zu regnen 🙄 Zur Freude aller gab es wieder Abendessen im Restaurant 👍So jetzt wollen wir noch ein bißchen Karten spielen und dann geht's ab ins Bett 😴Les mer

      May 20 Falkirk

      We got away from St Andrews before 9 am. It was only a bit over an hour to Falkirk with a stop for coffee on the way. First stop was the Falkirk Wheel which we found with only one wrong turn so a good start to the day. We first saw the Falkirk Wheel on a TV programme Great Canal Journeys. The Falkirk Wheel was built where the Forth & Clyde Canal meets the Union Canal. Only problem is the Forth & Clyde Canal is 35 metres higher than the Union Canal. Based on one of Archimedes' principles they decided to build a giant rotating wheel to deliver boats from one canal to the other. Each side of the wheel has a giant tank with 250 tonnes of water in it. The secret according to Archimedes is that a boat will displace it's own weight in water. So if there are 4 boats on one side and and none on the other the weight of each side is still 250 tonnes. The electric motors used to complete a transfer from one canal to the other use the same amount of power as it takes to boil the jug 8 times.
      I am pleased to say that Archimedes knew his stuff and we completed a loop successfully with a lap up the Canal through the Roughcastle Tunnel and back. An amazing sight to see in action. After our boat trip we had a bite of lunch and a cuppa in the cafe at the Wheel. The original plan was to stay the night in the carpark and ride our bikes to see the Kelpies which are about 5 kilometres away along the canal towpath. However, given that we were still a bike down and Gaye was reluctant to sit on the handlebars of my bike we had to look at another plan. After a little research we discovered that motorhomes can also stay overnight in the carpark at the Kelpies so off we went.
      The Kelpies is a monument celebrating the part that Clydesdale horses have played in Scotland. Particularly working on the canals. The statues are 100 feet tall and weigh 300 tonnes.
      We got the compulsory photos of the Kelpies in daylight and at sunset and stood around in the cold waiting for it to get dark but it never did. The sky was so clear and the horizon stayed orange right up until 11 pm when we called it quits and returned to the motorhome. It was down to about 6 degrees by then.
      I did get up and look out the window of the motorhome at 3 am and the horizon to the west behind the Kelpies was still orange and the sky to the east was already welcoming in the new day.      Les mer

      Comrie to Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel

      Goodbye breakfast at Comrie Croft then an hour or so drive to the Kelpies. Overnight at Falkirk Wheel. Very hot weather today. Possibility of seeing northern lights tonight but lots of cloud cover. We shall see.Les mer

      The Falkirk Wheel

      Das Falkirk Wheel ist ein modernes Schiffshebewerk nahe der schottischen Stadt Falkirk, das durch seine Konstruktion in der Art eines Riesenrades einmalig auf der Welt ist.

      Das Falkirk Wheel wurde am 24. Mai 2002 durch Königin Elisabeth II. anlässlich ihres goldenen Thronjubiläums eröffnet. Die Kosten des neuen Projekts betrugen 17 Millionen Pfund.

      Die gesamte Konstruktion hat einen Durchmesser von über 35 Metern und eine Masse von 1800 Tonnen. Der Höhenunterschied zwischen den Wasserwegen beträgt 24 Meter.

      Was für eine beeindruckende Konstruktion, wir haben uns gefühlt wie Kinder bei der ersten Riesenrad-Fahrt….      Les mer

      Edinburgh and Falkirk

      We drove into Edinburgh this morning and visited some friends for fellowship. We were surprised to see two girls from Queensland there! (We had previously met Laura at Nic and Matt's wedding)
      After lunch we met up with Matt and Kath, Olivia and Sam at our campsite close to the Falkirk Wheel in the Scotish lowlands not far from Edinburgh
      The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world. Locks are also used to connect the canals. We had the obligatory ride upstream!
      We booked a second night in Falkirk Wheel park. We took the train into Edinburgh and spent the day wandering around the old town with its cobbled streets and steep alleys. A visit to Edinburgh castle took a few hours with lots of war memorabilia, history and also the crown jewels. Parts of the castle date back to the 12th century. It stand high on the hill dominating the skyline over the old town. It was used as a military fortress for many years.      Les mer
