      The Kelpies - Felkirk

      Public Art. If a city is going to build it why not make it huge? And so they did. And these giant horses (Mythical Kelpies) are the result. Created first in miniature the individual metal pieces were measured and then formed and shaped in full size and placed on these massive frame.

      The area around the Kelpies was made into a very large wooded park.

      Shirley and Lee were our tour guides today and it’s always a hoot to hang out with family, especially family who enjoys a laugh.      Read more

      The Kelpies

      The Kelpies are 30-metre-high (98 ft) horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies (shape-shifting water spirits), located between Falkirk and Grangemouth, but the Kelpies themselves are situated in Grangemouth, standing next to an extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near the River Carron, in The Helix, a parkland project built to connect sixteen communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland. The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project.

      A kelpie, or water kelpie (Scottish Gaelic: Each-Uisge), is a shape-shifting spirit inhabiting lochs in Irish and Scottish folklore. It is usually described as a black horse-like creature, able to adopt human form. Some accounts state that the kelpie retains its hooves when appearing as a human, leading to its association with the Christian idea of Satan as alluded to by Robert Burns in his 1786 poem "Address to the Devil".       Einfach unglaublich!!!!!

      Wir wollten nur mal gucken, wo Duncuron ist. Es ist ein mittelalterlich aufgebautes Dorf, dass von Charlie Allan, Begründer der Mittelalterband Soar Patrol, initiiert worden ist. Zufällig trafen wir hier einen Mitarbeiter, obwohl eigentlich alles zu war. Wir erklärten ihm, woher wir kamen und warum wir hier waren da nahm er sich seinen Schlüsselbund und wir erhielten eine eineinhalbstündige individuelle Tour mit allen Erklärungen zum Dorf.       Glasgow en musique !

      Nous commençons la journée par une petite marche vers le Riverside Museum, musée de l'histoire des transports de la ville au bord de la rivière Clyde. Nous y découvrons que Glasgow a le 3ieme plus ancien métro du monde (1896), circulaire et fonctionnant par câble.
      Nous rejoignons ensuite le centre-ville après un repas "Breakfast" pour Antonin et Lucile et enfin un haggis pour Véro, pour écouter les groupes de cornemuses venus du monde entier au Piping Festival ! Ce sont des belges dans la vidéo.
      Fatigué, Antonin rentre à pied à l'auberge de jeunesse tandis que nous nous installons dans le plus vieux pub de Glasgow, le Scotia (230 ans au compteur) , pour assister à un joli moment de musique partagé. Tous les jeudi, un groupe s'assoie et joue, chante des airs traditionnels. Les gens chantent aussi, sortent un harmonica, tapent des mains... Nous en profitons pleinement à quelques mètres seulement des musiciens !      Read more

      Ankunft Schottland

      Heute startete unsere Reise nach Schottland. Nachdem das online einchecken gestern eine echte Prüfung war, lief es heute am Flughafen sehr entspannt und reibungslos . Uns Frauen wurde heute mal wieder gezeigt wie genügsam Männer sein können. Bei den Mädels lag das Koffer Gewicht von 15 bis 20,1 Kilo und unser Männliche Part hatte gerade mal 8,9 Kilo .👍Um 18:20 Uhr sind wir bei Sonnenschein in Edingburgh gelandet, hoffentlich sehen wir noch mehr Sonne 🌞. Nach circa einer Stunde Busfahrt sind wir beim Hotel angekommen. Zimmer sind o.k und das Abendessen war interessant eher indisch angehaucht. Steigerung wäre wünschenswert.Aber dem Spass in der Gruppe hat es keinen Abruch getan.😁Read more

      Zweiter Tag Erkundung von Edingburgh

      Heute morgen sind wir nach einem einfachen aber gutem Frühstück nach Edinburgh aufgebrochen, wo wir im Bus zum ersten Mal auf unsere Reiseleiterin gestoßen sind. Nun ja eine etwas ältere interessante Frau. Die sich redlich bemühte ihren Job zu machen. Leider klang es eher nach einer Grundschullehrerin etwas zäh halt 🙄und mit vielen Wiederholungen. Wobei eine Person vor uns im Bus vorschlug ein Trinkspiel mit den Wiederholungen zu machen. Die Fahrt wäre sehr schnell zu Ende gewesen. 🤪 In Edinburgh angekommen fuhren wir circa drei Stunden durch die Stadt mit ein paar Fotostops bis wir am frühen Nachmittag die Stadt auf eigene Faust erkunden durften. Natürlich fing es da auch prompt an zu regnen 🤷‍♂️☔️Dem Wetter zum Trotz haben wir eine schöne Stadt erkundet und viele,viele Bilder geschossen .Um halb fünf ging es wieder Richtung Hotel wo wir heute ein sehr gutes Essen bekommen haben 👌 Jetzt wird geschlafen morgen geht es zum halb neun zu neuen Zielen.Read more

      10. Tage: Stirling-Linlithgow-Falkirk

      So, heute ist unser letzter Tag der Rundreise. Start war um 9 Uhr 🕘 nach Stirling. Durch waren wir 2,5 Stunden im Stirling Castle. Es war sehr schön und impulsant 😮. Am Wallace Monument waren wir leider nicht😔. Danach ging es weiter nach Linlithgow und haben dort den Linlithgow Palace besichtigt. Dann ging es weiter Falkirk Wheel: super 👍. Und der letzte Programmpunkt unserer Tour waren „The Kelpies“. Zurück im Hotel musste unser Busfahrer Chris sich schon gleich wieder zurück nach Edinburgh. Seine 6-Tagewoche war um. Heike Noak, unsere Reiseleiterin bleibt noch bis morgen früh. Das Hotel war super 👍 👍 und das Abendessen und Frühstück sehr gut😊.Read more

      Über "Hogwarts" nach "Skyfall"

      Heute reisen wir weiter. Unsere Ziel ist zunächst das Viadukt in Hogwarts (Harry Potter). Es geht noch mit den Besuchern und wenn Engel oder gute Freunde reisen ist eben auch in Schottland schönes Wetter. Weiter geht's vorbei an einmalig schöner Landschaft. Bei einer Miniwanderung im Ben Nevis Tal nutzen wir die Gelegenheit zur Rast. Der Ben Nevis ist mit einer Höhe von 1.345 m der höchste Berg Schottlands und Großbritanniens. Er liegt etwa 7 km östlich der Stadt Fort William. Danach geht's weiter an auf der Skyfall Str., auch hier wieder unbeschreiblich schöne Landschaft und klasse Wetter. Jetzt aber ab in unsere letzte Unterkunft wo wir erst 19.30 Uhr einchecken. Es war ein langer Tag, Essen und gute Nacht. Morgen fliegen wir wieder heim, schade 😢.Read more

      May 20 Falkirk

      We got away from St Andrews before 9 am. It was only a bit over an hour to Falkirk with a stop for coffee on the way. First stop was the Falkirk Wheel which we found with only one wrong turn so a good start to the day. We first saw the Falkirk Wheel on a TV programme Great Canal Journeys. The Falkirk Wheel was built where the Forth & Clyde Canal meets the Union Canal. Only problem is the Forth & Clyde Canal is 35 metres higher than the Union Canal. Based on one of Archimedes' principles they decided to build a giant rotating wheel to deliver boats from one canal to the other. Each side of the wheel has a giant tank with 250 tonnes of water in it. The secret according to Archimedes is that a boat will displace it's own weight in water. So if there are 4 boats on one side and and none on the other the weight of each side is still 250 tonnes. The electric motors used to complete a transfer from one canal to the other use the same amount of power as it takes to boil the jug 8 times.
      I am pleased to say that Archimedes knew his stuff and we completed a loop successfully with a lap up the Canal through the Roughcastle Tunnel and back. An amazing sight to see in action. After our boat trip we had a bite of lunch and a cuppa in the cafe at the Wheel. The original plan was to stay the night in the carpark and ride our bikes to see the Kelpies which are about 5 kilometres away along the canal towpath. However, given that we were still a bike down and Gaye was reluctant to sit on the handlebars of my bike we had to look at another plan. After a little research we discovered that motorhomes can also stay overnight in the carpark at the Kelpies so off we went.
      The Kelpies is a monument celebrating the part that Clydesdale horses have played in Scotland. Particularly working on the canals. The statues are 100 feet tall and weigh 300 tonnes.
      We got the compulsory photos of the Kelpies in daylight and at sunset and stood around in the cold waiting for it to get dark but it never did. The sky was so clear and the horizon stayed orange right up until 11 pm when we called it quits and returned to the motorhome. It was down to about 6 degrees by then.
      I did get up and look out the window of the motorhome at 3 am and the horizon to the west behind the Kelpies was still orange and the sky to the east was already welcoming in the new day.      Read more
