Sitting at home watching episodes of Doc Martin made me want to come and see the seaside village where it was filmed. 4 airplanes, 6 countries and a 4 hour car ride later and I am living it. Looks like the tv show but in winter all the quirky characters went inside to keep warm. Still, I love it and I’m so happy to be here.Read more

1 Planet 1 Bag Yes but the village is practically all closed up for winter. Only 2 places open for dinner and none of the shops. Seems like the town is resting before the next rush. We hear that during the “busy” time you can’t really move in the town.

Padstow, Pork Isaac(Port Wenn, Doc Mart)

Wednesday. Morning walk out along the estuary towards the lifeboat and pilot stations, rather windy, hope the rain stays away. Pastries and pasties for breakfast, enjoyed the local pudding made with fresh and yesterday's unsold pasteries.

Off to Doc Martin territory. Solid walk down and around. No parking in town, park up the hill and walk down to town. Lunch in the Golden Inn. Ticked of most of the filming sights.

Watched the brave soles surfing at Polzeath beach, the water might be a little warmer than it looks.

Gin tasting at Tarquin's Gin School and shop. Dinner in the London Inn pork belly, hearty meal hearty pub.Read more

Seguendo sempre le indicazioni di Mademoiselle Champagne arriviamo a Port Isaac. Parcheggiamo all'entrata del paese in alto e scendiamo un po' perplesse verso il paese per ritrovarci in un porticciolo circondato da viuzze strettissime, anche questo particolarissimo.... In questo paesino sono stati girati numerosi film e serie TV.
Arriviamo con la bassa marea ed è bellissimo vedere le barche in secca, quasi stessero dormendo nel porto...Read more

Touring Cornwall and the place made famous by the tv show Doc Martin and the movie and group Fisherman's Friend. Which is a great movie and the music as they would say here is "quite lovely"

The tall grey house is mine and the steps are a tad bit steep and you have to duck as the opening is about 4 ft tall. A bit stressful but I was very relaxed after my morning yoga by the bay. People come from all over the UK to walk and smell the ocean. It is quite refreshing and quaint.Read more

Typical English weather today with plenty of drizzle, but luckily it stopped both times we stopped - at Port Isaac and Padstow.

Port Isaac is a pretty fishing village and home of the Doc Martin TV series. It was low tide which can be seen in the photos.Read more

Doc Martin, Castles and Witches!

Raining this morning when we set off, about a fifty minute drive over to Port Isaac, bit of a mix of motorway, smaller highways and tiny little lanes. It had stopped raining by the time we got there at least, still pretty overcast though. What a gorgeous little village, you can see why they picked this one for the tv series. Lots of pretty streets leading down to a picturesque harbour. We'd done our usual trick and were there before a lot of the shops had opened. That works pretty well for us though because you get to see a bit before the crowds arrive. We hiked up to the top of one of the cliffs overlooking the village, beautiful views from up there and the rain held off and the sun tried it's best to shine through. We finally discovered what a Bacon Bap is too. Bit like a toasted bagel with bacon.

Next stop was Tintagel, home of one of King Arthur's Castles, or the ruin of it anyway. Beautiful headland and more gorgeous vistas! Nice old post office in town too, which is restored to its former glory and on display. It started to rain again just as we got back to town and we'd worked up an appetite after all this walking so tried out a hand picked crab sandwich, yummo!

Then on to Boscastle, another pretty little harbour, only really small this time lined with steep slate cliffs, and an interesting witches museum. Lots of protected harbours in Cornwall so I'm assuming the seas get pretty high and rough at times!

Set the GPS to home and this time it let us through every small lane in Cornwall I think. Omg talk about squeezy, the hedges and rocks walls are whizzing past and nobody slows down, not even the little old ladies.ma couple of them left us for dead. Anyway we made it back with a few more grey hairs to show for it! Now to sort some dinner, there's no lack of pubs so I'm sure we'll be right!Read more

3.Tag Boscastle nach Port Isaac

Der South West Coast Path führt durch sehr viel Farmland. Rinder, Pferde und Schafe weiden quasi mit Blick auf das Meer. Das hat zur Folge, dass man unzählige Zäune und Mauern überqueren muss. Alle paar hundert Meter gibt es Stufen in den Mauern oder besondere Tore.
Heute haben wir erfahren, dass eine bestimmte Bauart der Tore ,Kissing Gate‘ genannt wird. Und so konnten wir aus diesem Umstand - die Etymologie völlig frei interpretierend - einen netten Zusatz aus diesem herrlichen Weg herausholen....

Und sonst?
1500 Höhenmeter.
Immer an der Kante zum Meer.
Fast Sonnenbrand.
Salat und Bier auf dem Balkon des Gasthauses mit Blick zum Meer.
Unendliche Freiheit.
Geschundene Knie.
Vorfreude.
Eis in einer fast mediterran wirkenden Landschaft.

Von den Bedruthan Steps ging es weiter nach Porthcothan, St. Merryn und Padstow.
Meiner Ansicht nach ist Padstow mal so was von überbewertet. Die ganze Stadt war vollkommen überfüllt und machte vom Attraktivitätsgrad her Penzance stark Konkurrenz. Nur weil dort in der Stadt irgendein hohes Tier vom BBC sitzt, scheint die Stadt so berühmt zu sein. Ich konnte sonst keinen anderen Grund, für diese überteuerte Hafenstadt, ausmachen, um diese Stadt zu besuchen.
Auf der Überfährt von Padstow nach Rock mittels einer kleinen Fähre lernte ich erneut ein paar Radfahrer kennen, allerdings machten diese, wie viele bereits kennen gelernte Radsportbegeisterte, nur einen Tagesausflug.

Die 3 kleinen Örtchen, auf der anderen Seiten des Flusses von Padstow, imponierten mich wesentlich mehr. Sehr klein, aber fein waren die Orte: Rock, Pityme und Saint Minver.
Ein erneutes Postkartenmotiv sieht Ihr auf dem 6. Bild (Strandblick von Rock aus).
Charakeristsch für die 3 kleinen Orte war, dass fast jede Frontseite der Häuser dort aus einem Teil von Backsteinen oder Natursteinen bestand. Dies seht Ihr exemplarisch in der Abbildung 5.
An dieser Stelle ein kleines Sorry, für die für Euch vielleicht merkwürdig vorkommenden Formulierungen. Vielleicht ist da jemand noch im Bachelorarbeit-Modus drin ;-)

Meine nächste Station war Port Issac (Bild 1 bis 4), ein kleines nettes Städtelein mit vielen sehr engen Gassen (Bilder 1). In dem 2. Bild seht Ihr eine typische Steinmauer, wie sie überall in Cornwall und auch teilweise in Devon zu finden sind. Diese Mauern mit den spitzen senkrecht aufragenden Steinen ist für mich ein Merkmal vom "Heart of England".
Ich empfand es auf 3. Bild echt als sehr entspannt, weil man dort einen perfekten Blick auf das Meer und Bild 4 hatte. Saß dort gute 20 Minuten, habe an Rachael gedacht und musste auch schmunzeln von dem Anblick, der mir dort geboten wurde.Read more

Strandleben

Die Engländer hier sind „Strandlebens-Künstler“:
Da kommen 5 Sonnenstrahlen und sie packen Kinder und Hunde ein und gehen an den Strand.
Und dort findet man dann ein heilloses Durcheinander aus Kindern im Neopren, die in den Pools planschen, die in den mündenden Bächen gebildet werden und wo immer wieder ein Hund dazu hineinspringt; Familien, die Sandburgen bauen, Drachen steigen lassen, Picknicken; Hunde, die sich gegenseitig über den Strand jagen und Bälle aus der Brandung holen; Menschen die sich sonnen oder gar ohne Neo im Meer baden; ferngesteuerte Autos, die zwischen allen hindurch flitzen und natürlich Surfer.....
....pure Lebensfreude! Auch zum Zuschauen !Read more
