      Museums & Castles

      19. desember 2019, England ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Today was wet! Very wet. The perfect day for some inside exploring. We were off to the British Museum and Tower of London.

British Museum was up first. This huge museum was a wonder. We could have spent he whole day there and still not seen everything. We only had a few hours though so we prioritised Ancient Egypt, Assyria and Greece. These were all things both of us had learnt about during our year 12 schooling so it was pretty amazing to see things in the flesh. The colossal statues of this powerful Pharaohs and lavish palaces of the Assyrian Kings. It was just so amazing to actual visualise these actual things that existed so many years ago. Even stories from the bible we learn’t as kids, seeing the actual palaces from those times really brings what it would have been like to life. I never really pictured much of the city of Nineveh but seeing the actual palace walls in real life depicting carvings of what life was like there really brought it to life.
We dove into history for a few hours before time got away from us and we had to get across to the grand Tower of London. Not before a quick pit stop at the local bookshop though.

We made it to the Tower of London, grabbed our audio guides and set off in the rain to explore this incredible castle and fortress. This was a real step back in time. All the way back to William the Conquerer. Originally it started out as a prison, then part of it became a royal palace, a store house for military weapons and now it’s a museum of war weapons and of course the home of The Crown Jewels.

After exploring the history for a while we wandered in to see the Crown Jewels. Jo was very excited! We took the constantly moving travellator past quite a few times before we could move on. These jewels were very bedazzling, under all the lights they sparkled like crazy. Some of the jewels were incredible! We found out that this was home to the largest cut diamond in the world, the Cullinan diamond. Originally 3,106 carats and the size of a baseball it was cut down and forms different parts of the crown jewels. Unfortunately Queen Lizzy’s crown was in use so we couldn’t see the state crown. With the latest British election Boris Johnson had stolen it for the day.
Must admit though, this huge display of wealth was all a bit much I think. Traditions or not you could see why the poorer class would have despised the royal family sometimes.
We hung around the castle until sunset which was such stunning lighting with the tower bridge in the background.

From there we were heading home. We were on babysitting duty tonight so James and Jess could enjoy dinner and a show. It was nice to have a night relaxing at home actually. We waved them off, got Hudsy to bed and put ourselves to bed not long after.

      A very historically informative day!

      Asher ☺️

London, our last day (thanks be to God)

      16. juli 2023, England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

I'm over London. Nice. But no thanks. It's a Mecca for a lot of people but for me...too much, and too crowded!
Walked for miles and saw a lot but give me the rural surroundings and market villages over this.Les mer

      Victoria & Albert

      25. september 2022, England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      On My Own Again

      4. juni, England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Laura had to leave early this morning. Gone by 8:00 AM. It was absolutely hilarious watching her pack last night. We had to buy a larger suitcase for her since she had a successful day of shopping yesterday. I believe that this is normal since Laura and Nicole had to do the same thing in Greece a couple of years ago. Ah well, youth, what can I say. I don't think I laughed that hard in years. Laura is a determined little thing (no idea where that comes from) as she tried to squeeze one more thing into a suitcase. Laura did make it to the airport on time and with everything in tow.

I had a leasurely day to myself. I took a nice long shower, then went down to Nero's for an almond croissant and a latte. I head back to Collectif today because their outlet store is open. They have more clothes in my size. It was a disappointing trip as they didn't have anything I wanted. After that, I took myself down to the Victoria and Albert museum. This is free and open to the public. The displays range from architecture in Britian 1760-1900, design in gold, silver, ironwork sculpture, tapestries, medieval and renaissance Britin, To Buddhism, Japan Korea and more. An amazing way to while away the afternoon.

It is just interesting to walk around and see stuff. Check out the clock video. The imagination here is great!

I came back to the room for some quiet time. I haven't said much about where we are staying. It is called the Edward Hotel in Paddington. The room is small, maybe 4 meters by 3 meters. The bathroom is tiny (included in the 4 X 3 meters). There is one hanging closet (with 6 plastic hangers), no dresser or drawers of any kind. While it is functional, it is not luxurious by any means. Somewhat of a letdown after our cruise cabin. It is fairly close to the Underground, and there are many restaurants within walking distance. It is quiet at night and the staff are lovely. However, it was not a place where I would come back to again. You rely on pictures and reviews, but I'm wondering if they can be counted on anymore.

I had dinner at a noisy pub just down the street called The Bear. I had a burger and a glass of wine. The burger was delicious and just enough for tonight. This place is for the locals to come and get a pint and work through the worlds problems. I like visiting places like this to see everyday people. It allows you to get a vibe of where you are.

Tomorrow is my last full day here. We'll see what happens.

      Natural History Museum London 🫶

      27. august 2023, England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Kent

      16. mai, England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today we took the train to Gatwick airport to pick up our rental car. We motored to Sissinghurst castle and gardens and spent a good three hours in the rain - not much, exploring the magnificent garden. We then went to Wrotham to St George's church where my great great grandfather (Bennett) was baptized. The sun had come out by then. The church dates to the 13 century. Pictures shows the font and inside the church - special. We also visited Ightham where my great grandfather was born. One picture shows the wooden door of St Peter's church Ightham. This church was the site of many Bennett marriages. A great day out in beautiful Kent. Carina navigated some very very narrow roads!!Les mer
