Birthplace of Winston Churchill. Rained on me again, so didn't see as much of the gardens as I'd originally planned to, but did add in Woodstock (adjacent old 13th century village).

Nachdem wir die normalen Räumlichkeiten angeschaut hatten gab es noch die Churchillausstellung zu sehen, der für uns interessanteste Teil.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill KG OM CH PCc RA (* 30. November 1874 in Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire; † 24. Januar 1965 in London) gilt als bedeutendster britischer Staatsmann des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er war zweimal Premierminister – von 1940 bis 1945 sowie von 1951 bis 1955 – und führte Großbritannien durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg. Zuvor hatte er bereits mehrere Regierungsämter bekleidet, unter anderem das des Innenministers, des Ersten Lords der Admiralität und des Schatzkanzlers. Darüber hinaus trat er als Autor politischer und historischer Werke hervor und erhielt 1953 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.Read more

Baugeschichte

Aufgrund von Unstimmigkeiten zwischen dem Architekten und Marlboroughs Frau Sarah und der damit einhergehenden Änderungen im Plan kam es zu erheblichen Mehrkosten, wodurch der Palast auch noch den größten Teil des Vermögens des Dukes verschlang und erst nach seinem Tod 1722 vollendet wurde. Es war dann Nicholas Hawksmoor, ein Mitarbeiter von John Vanbrugh, der die Bauarbeiten weiterhin überwachte. Die Wohnfläche des Schlosses beträgt 12.000 m².

Insbesondere der Park wurde mehrfach umgestaltet. Der einflussreiche Landschaftsarchitekt Capability Brown gestaltete 1764 den 1010 Hektar großen Park neu und schuf dabei durch das Aufstauen des River Glyme den See, der heute vor dem Palast liegt. Durch eine Brücke wird der See in zwei Teile geteilt; der kleinere nördliche Teil ist als Queen Pool bekannt und der größere südliche als The Lake. Die Wasserterrassen wurden 1920 im Stil des 17. Jahrhunderts vom französischen Architekten Achille Duchêne neu geschaffen.

Der Palast steht heute im Eigentum von Charles James Spencer-Churchill, 12. Duke of Marlborough, eines Nachfahren des Bauherren. Er gehört dem Konsortium Treasure Houses of England an und zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Gegen ein Eintrittsgeld kann er besichtigt werden.Read more

Ein Triumphbogen führt von der kleinen Stadt Woodstock in der Nähe von Oxford hinauf zum Schloss. Er soll an den großen Erfolg bei der Schlacht von Höchstädt (eigentlich von Blindheim, einem Ort bei Höchstädt, daher engl. Battle of Blenheim) 1704 erinnern. Der Palast wurde von Sir John Vanbrugh entworfen. Blenheim Palace ist der größte nicht königliche Adelssitz in Großbritannien. In den Empfangsräumen ist auf jegliche Behaglichkeit verzichtet – sie sollten bewusst überwältigend und beeindruckend wirken. 20 Meter hoch ist die Haupthalle, die in einen großen, mit Fresken verzierten Salon führt. Der Salon ist auf eine 41 Meter hohe Siegessäule im Park des Schlosses ausgerichtet. Die sie umgebenden Bäume symbolisieren Marlboroughs Soldaten. Das Südportal krönt eine Büste des in der Schlacht von Höchstädt unterlegenen Ludwig XIV., die von dort auf den Reichtum der Anlage herunterblickt. Es lässt sich nicht klären, ob dieser Abschluss des Südportals auf einen Vorschlag des Architekten Vanbrugh zurückgeht oder eine Ironie des in Höchstädt siegreichen Churchills war.Read more

Blenheim Palace bei Woodstock in der Grafschaft Oxfordshire gehört zu den größten und bekanntesten Schlössern Englands. Es wurde für John Churchill, 1. Duke of Marlborough während der Regierung von Königin Anne als Belohnung für seine militärischen Erfolge im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg (Sieg bei der Schlacht von Höchstädt 1704 an der Donau; englisch Battle of Blenheim) erbaut. Die englische Form Battle of Blenheim dürfte daher rühren, dass die englischen Truppen französische Aufklärer verwendeten. Deren Aussprache des Namens des Ortes Blindheim (nahe Höchstädt an der Donau) führte zur englischen Form Blenheim. In dem Schloss erinnert heute eine permanente Ausstellung an den bekanntesten Nachfahren des Dukes, Winston Churchill, der 1874 hier geboren wurde.Read more

Am Palast selbst mussten wir erst einmal den richtigen Schalter für das Ticket abholen suchen.

Es gab zu jedem Eintrittsticket eine Jahresmitgliedschaft und eine schicke Plastikkarte mit Bild. Diese hätte uns berechtigt innerhalb eines Jahres ab Kaufdatum so oft wie wir möchten den Palast besuchen zu können. Es war eine Aktion als ich die Tickets gekauft habe. Pro Person haben wir stolze 26 Pfund bezahlt.

Ein Audioguide haben wir nicht mitgenommen.

Day 8 - Blenheim Palace & Oxford

Our first this morning was to Blenheim Palace. The Palace is the residence of the Dukes of Marlborough. The first Duke of Marlborough was John Churchill. Although not a Duke, Winston Churchill a member of that family line.

The tour guide and the house were wonderful. We got an early entrance and thus were able to beat the crowds. After the tour we were free to explore the grounds and the other exhibits. My favorite was the exhibit called Destiny. This exhibit gave an overview of John Churchill's tactics in battle and explained how the victories of the 1st Duke inspired Winston Churchill during his time as a political leader. Winston Churchill often said that it was his destiny to follow the path he did.

After the exhibit and walking around a portion of the vast gardens, we had lunch outside at the on-site cafe. The bees nearby were drawn to our sodas. As a bit of entertainment (for me) or a challenge (for John), John spent his time after eating capturing bees in each of our 3 cans of soda (one bee per can).

That night in Oxford dinner was on our own. We selected the White Horse Pub featured in some of the Inspector Morse shows. The food was okay, but nothing to rave about. I think we prefer what are now referred to as "gastro pubs". After dinner we walked around Oxford for a while and I got a scoop of caramel ice cream.

Once we got back to the hotel it was time to pack up to be ready to leave for Bath in the morning.Read more

Day 32
Was that the Cotswolds?

Today was to be a day in the Cotswolds. First we tried to re-create a photo at the front door of Scotsgrove B&B and Mary, like the photos we have take on two previous visits. At this time of the year all the flowers are finished - but we did it just the same. Mary was going to do the washing, but George organise his daughter, Charlotte to do this for us - very kind. Mary was traumatised at the thought, but had to accept gracefully!

Off we went down the winding roads and ridiculous roundabouts - no they are not roundabouts - which should be circular with 4 exits - that rarely happens over here - most roundabouts have trees or hills in the middle making it impossible to see where you are going. Alternatively, they are just painted on the road in the middle of a normal intersection - go figure?

Through the lovely villages we went. Stopped at Bicester for a cup of tea. Couldn't find any so ended up in a pub again - but this time limited myself to coffee and cake. Very enjoyable.

Off again heading towards Witney and Burford when we saw the turnoff to Blenheim Palace. We had both thought before this would be worth a visit so we took a detour [note to roadway engineers of England - not a diversion]. What a magnificent place - huge gardens and a huge palace. This was going to take some time to explore.

It turns out that some guy [The Duke of Marlborough] led English soldiers to victory over France who were trying to take over Spanish territories in Belgium [a place called Blenheim] and was rewarded for his efforts with 1,000s of acres of land and an almost blank cheque from Queen Anne to build an enormous home. Oh, the queen was also good friends with his wife - nice to have friends in high places.

We had the story of Churchill being born here and Lady Di's connections and the common tale of the grandsons spending all the money until one Duke married an American lady - a Vanderbilt no less - the palace was saved !!!

We took the guided tour - always a good idea - you would miss interesting bits if you do the walk around by yourself. Then we when for a long walk in the gardens - very enjoyable - lush green grass and not a weed in sight and so many swans on the lake.

Back to the B&B after we had our best meal in Thame, at the Six Bells, to pack ready for our trip to Ireland.

Tomorrow we leave for London and to return the Hire Car. A visit to Camden Market is planned if we have time.
