      Fly Away Home

      August 15, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

With a late evening flight I had another whole day to spend in Manhattan. My Air BnB host was kind enough to let me keep my luggage in her front room so I ventured back into the city to explore the wonder that is Intrepid - Air, Sea and Space Museum. With flying in the blood, this seemed the perfect way to spend my last day. My only sadness was that Dad wasn't with me to share the experience as he would have loved every part of it. Needless to say I sent him multiple photos and phoned home whilst eating my lunch under Concorde. It has to be said I don't think one day would have been enough for him here. I struggled with only 5 hours and was there until they shut.

The BBC Weather app failed me massively today as it had not forecast any rain whatsoever yet it was torrential for hours. So much so I had to buy an umbrella to be able to get out on the main deck to see my beloved Blackbird. I have not ceased to be amazed by this aircraft and only wish I had been lucky enough to see it fly. My heart literally skipped a beat when I caught my first glimpse of her from the dockside. I was similarly in awe of the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Such a collection of amazing aircraft and history in one place. I would put it on a par if not better than the IWM Museum at Duxford.

I ventured back towards Brooklyn via Grand Central Station. I'd never been and so it was another one crossed off the list. It was then the start of the journey home. I was ready now.

Petunia, Douglas, Pluto and I took our last Uber to JFK. British Airways did me proud once again and flew me home in style. Fittingly I fell asleep watching Beauty and the Beast looking forward to being home when I woke up.

      Statue of Liberty

      November 27, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Earlier start today, well we set the alarm for 8am 😂😂. By 9.30 we are in our friend Mr Uber heading to Battery Park. I learned that an Uber pool car means that you can share with others, however Sandra our ride share failed to turn up - still took 45 minutes to get to our destination despite it being only 5 miles.
Collect our tickets and we are on the ferry to Liberty Island. After a self guided tour with the aid of a headset, we are at the crown. 377 steps up and obviously the same down, good stamina training - although Janet was huffing and puffing a bit, neither of us realised their would be so many steps and some in a very confined space. The Statue of Liberty 🗽 itself is a magnificent construction and fascinating to see. We read about its history and construction. Did you know it has an iron frame structure, covered with a copper skin, the frame designed by Eiffel (the Eiffel Tower designer), the skin is quite thin only 2x1 cent pieces thick. We call at Crown cafe, its heaving and as per with attraction cafes - overpriced and understaffed. If you ever visit wait for the cruise boat it’s better value, we leave Liberty Island and head to Ellis Island and the Immigration Museum. Quite a sobering tour realising that millions of people from hundreds of countries were processed in the main hall and form what is America today. We have missed the last hard hat tour so are unable to visit the hospital which is a shame, it’s said to be untouched since it was stopped being used, that’s maybe why you have to wear a hard hat. I do however, discover a possible ancestor on the wall of honour.
Ferry back to New York, we had hoped to visit Coney Island which is on the coast and has a traditional funfair from the 60’s but it only opens May though to October and we’ve been advised it’s not particularly safe on an evening, nor will anything be lit up so a little pointless.
We head towards Wall Street stopping at the raging bull, where a nice lady offers to take our picture before asking us what we think of the new Dr Who !! Turns out she has met most of them in a previous role as a bodyguard, just part of every day random New York.
We walk the 3.5 miles back up towards Times Square past City Hall and the Chrysler building stopping off at a small Korean bar for some refreshment and sample their chicken wings that are excellent before calling at a Greek restaurant for dinner. They give us garlic bread and a side salad which is a meal in its self and that’s before our actual order. Good job we are doing so much walking whilst here. Finish the night with cocktails in the hotel bar.

      Rocking all over NYC

      November 28, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Today is our last full day in New York, it’s also the anniversary of when we first met Friday 28th November 1986. 32 years ago, Janet was 16 and I 17. We weren’t overly impressed with each other to start with, but fortunately once we got to know each other, things changed.
A real lazy morning, waking to a call from Grace to say she has passed her driving theory test (well done sweetheart never in doubt). Heading down to breakfast at 10am breakfast it’s a little bit quieter than other days.
We eventually leave the hotel at midday, a trip to pick up a Christmas present before we go to Radio City Music Hall to watch the Christmas spectacular starring the Rockettes. Once again, as with nearly every attraction we have been too, you are subject to near airport style security. I was allowed to keep my belt on at this one 😂. Its a very good show, although the family in front need to sit bloody still (Janet’s only short) 😂😂. There’s a heavy police presence when we leave, along with manic traffic - this is all due to the Christmas Lights switch on tonight at the Rockerfella centre.
After a quick nip back to the hotel to drop off our presents, we stop off for cocktails (we are getting a taste for these).
We head over to towards the Rockafella Centre with the intention of going to the “Top of the Rock”. After battling through the massive crowds, a NYPD officer tells us we can only be admitted with tickets so we abandon our plan for beer and food. The advertised tree lighting at 7pm is not only televised, but also still not happened by 8.45 - glad we didn’t queue for it 🙃. We head back to the hotel stopping off at a little cocktail bar en route, negroni for Janet Apple Whisky cinnamon for me. Janet isn’t keen so orders Prosecco (it is happy hour), the negroni isn’t that bad👍. Back to the hotel via Times Square and a stop off at starbucks for a cup of tea.

      New York

      December 4, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

This was our first day in NYC 🗽 A bit of a crazy start to the day, as we over slept and woke up at 4pm NYC time!
Didn’t matter we got moving and spent the next six or so hours walking the streets and getting a feel for the place. It has been around 1-2 degrees for most of the night, so quite brisk.
Our apartment is situated two blocks from Times Square, so we headed there first. It feels just like day time with all the lights, it is quite a sight. Then we made our way to 5th Avenue via Bryant Park. Here there were Christmas markets, an ice skating rink and another beautiful Christmas tree. Then we went onto to the Rockefeller Centre to see the Christmas tree and the beautiful light show on Saks Department store. We continued to wander the streets and made our way back to Times Square for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe.
Back home at 11pm to try and sleep and get our bodies onto NYC time, with the hope that we will see NYC in daylight tomorrow, will need to st an alarm!⏰

      New York

      December 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

Yes! Got to see daylight today! Bonus!
Took the Hop On Hop Off bus for the Downtown route! OMG! It took all day with the traffic! Did get off to investigate Chinatown, Tribeca (awesome coffee!☕️) and the Empire State Building. The day looks beautiful with sunny skies but the cold was crazy, 1 degree all day!
Also found a gem for my Black and White family⚫️⚪️⚫️⚪️⚫️
Went to dinner at an amazing restaurant, it was like tapas but with a twist. Lots of small dishes to share ranging from ricotta ravioli, stuffed eggplant with goats cheese, spicy meatballs and octopus bruschetta, just name a few. Our dinner guests were my travelling companion, Mary-Anne’s USA relatives. It was a lovely evening with great food and wine and very enjoyable company.

    • Day 4

      New York

      December 7, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 -2 °C

Today we hopped on and off again on the bus for the Uptown trip. Visiting the East side, Harlem and Central Park. As it was freezing cold there was more “hop on” than “hop off”. Central Park looks real colourless in the cold, no green grass and no leaves on the trees. However, it is still an amazing amount of Park in the middle of this city. We had lunch in a true NY Deli today, the chicken noodle soup really hit the spot on a two degree day. Tonight in minus one temperatures we ventured out to see “Kinky Boots” on Broadway. The show was amazing, I loved every minute! I would highly recommend it.
We finished the night off with traditional NY pizza for supper.

      New York

      December 9, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 -1 °C

Final day in New York, took it pretty easy and slow as I think the jet lag has caught up with me. Wandered the streets after breakfast on our way to the theatre booking office. We booked to see the musical “Beautiful - The Carole King Story”. As the name suggests it was simply beautiful. Funny, emotional and very entertaining. There were so many songs that I knew but didn’t realise that she had written them with and without her husband. Visited the HBO shop and purchased some “Game of Thrones” keepsakes.Read more

      The Ride

      May 16, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Read more
