      Rocky Mountain National Park

      August 11, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Sinks Canyon & Sacajawea

      June 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

Today was a good day. Beautiful weather for a nice 3 mile hike in Sinks Canyon, Wyoming. We saw a beautiful waterfall. On our way to Dubois, we stopped at Sacajawea's grave. Then off to Dubois for the eve. We had a great dinner (with yummy pie for dessert) and then headed to a rodeo! Zak and Randi tried to get a ribbon off a calf's tail. It was very entertaining.Read more

    • Day 25

      Western WY

      September 17, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Did I mention the wind? Getting used to it now and has certainly increased my strength and confidence on the bike. Got to ride some more gravel which led me to a campsite on a reservoir where I was seemingly the only person in the county. After 30 mph winds calmed down for a pleasant dinner, at 9:30 PM winds kicked up to about 50 mph out of nowhere, filling my tent and sleeping bag with sand. And blowing my stuff halfway across Wyoming. I made the decision to take shelter in a pit toilet. Less than ideal sleep that night…Jammed an empty toilet paper roll in the door for some ventilation. Freezing cold sleeping in my camp chair with a sleeping bag draped over me.

Hopped back on the bike and headed out for Dubois deep up a valley at the foot of the mountains- everything looks like Arizona desert mountains on the Eastern slope in this rain shadow of the Rockies. Another day of winds gusting up to 47 mph by the end of the ride, alongside the Windriver Reservation where Native Americans have been shoved onto resourceless, infertile wasteland…Enjoyed sharing lunch with some local folks and hearing about their lives.

Pushed on through a 55 mile day and pulled into Dubois for a great night of food, beer, and new friends. Gained some good elevation and am ready to cross through the Togwatee pass over the Rockies down into Jackson Hole tomorrow. Game on

      Dubois KOA

      September 9, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Our site is right on the Wind River. We now know why it is named that, it is windy. A chilly wind. A really gusty wind.

Also, Heather likes looking around the camp store when we check in to see what they have, what might be different. Today was a big score for me. The campground’s end-of-season sale had these one-off-kind bear comfy shorts 30% off! We snapped them right up. Question: do they make me look fat?Read more

      Around Dubois

      September 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Gordon saw a wee little sign pointing to a one-track gravel road, headed straight up a hill just west of town: Scenic Outlook. Why not. We courageously headed up, hoping the car that had preceded us was a local and KNEW that the track was manageable in a car. We put the Hilander in 4-wheel drive for the first time since buying it.

At the top we met two gentlemen outfitted with hiking poles, out for their morning constitutional following their regular coffee date. They gave us lots of tips about where we might go if only we were staying longer. The fellow in the photo reminded me in the process of the correct pronunciation of “creek”: that is, “CRICK.”

They strongly encouraged us to take the-half mile walk out to the end of the table top for some good views. Wow. Glad we could share.

      Dubois

      September 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Population 971, elevation 6946 feet, and pronounced “do-BOYS.” Though it is obvious the town’s business relies heavily on summer tourists and fall hunters, it feels genuine and lived in and we had more than the normal interactions with the residents. There were the two gentlemen hiking on the scenic trail just outside of town where we took all the photos of the painted hills.

There was the proprietor of the local wine store who managed to fill his postage stamp sized establishment with 2 of everything, and I’m not kidding. We walked out with three regional brews for Gordon, a lovely Chianti for me, and an explanation why he is able to stock Buffalo Trace bourbon when we have such a hard time finding it in populous Jacksonville, Florida.

There was the woman at the convenience store advertising the largest Jackalope exhibit anywhere.

We especially enjoyed conversing with Monty who owned the jewelry store and art gallery where Gordon bought Heather a gorgeous pendant of Navaho silver with gaspeite. Monte was an artist and photographer, a businessman, a gemologist, a ragtime pianist (if it’s by Scott Joplin he plays it, and a single action pistol shooter. He regaled Gordon with stories of competitions he’d been at where they had to do instant slo-mo relays so people could see what they saw. He also gave Gordon tips on where he should go to get a nice custom- made bowler hat like his. When I snapped a picture of him and then asked permission, he said sure, it happens all day long.

      Around Dubois 2

      September 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Here are some artistic closeups of plant life. And.... more proof of aliens! The fourth photo shows crop circles, or something like that. (Heather disrespectfully called them parking lot circles.) And the fifth photo shows the tabletop that we drove up to. You will notice how flat the top is, as if the top of a mountain had be removed for some purpose. This is in fact where the crop circles were. And if you look at the photos in the other posts, you will see that a lot of other mounters have have had there tops removed. I suspect that Dubois was the site of an alien space port, the structures of which were scoured away in the last ice age. Goodness... it sends shivers up my spine to think that we were so close to the alien presence here on earth.Read more

Early Dinner at the Cowbow Cafe

      September 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Hamburgers, sweet potato fries and beer, all in all an excellent dinner. And there may be 2 slices of Ruth Nicoll memorial boysenberry pie to go.
