    The Big Texan, Amarillo

June 13, 2017 in the United States

A 72ounce steak to be devoured in under an hour. Jeff's attempt failed. Cost him $90!! 🤣🤣 And we ate under the watchful eyes of a million dead animals 😕 Where else but in Texas!!

    Big Texan Steak House

November 7, 2015 in the United States

The Big Texan Steak House is right on Route 66, and has been there since 1960 when the road was still fully in use. It gives substance to the saying that everything is bigger in Texas. The challenge here is to eat a 72 ounce steak in one hour. If you can, it's free! Will Gordon rise to the occassion? Can he do it?

Oh... he chickens out and gets a quesadilla. Heather gets the chicken fried steak sandwich. Gordon also braved a very nice and very stout whiskey barrel stout. Heather quaffed a pecan porter. Both of the beers were brewed right here.

We THOUGHT we saved room for the four layer chocolate cake, but when it arrived, it was actually the size of a full cake. Good thing we were sharing. We couldn't finish. Don't fall out of your seat, now.

At the gift shop, Heather picked up a souvenir since we are heading out of Texas tomorrow: a blingy tooled red white and blue faux leather purselet sporting a prominently shiny lone star.

    Day 22 - Chenowah to Amarillo RT66

July 1, 2016 in the United States

This is pretty much a travel day across the rest of Oklahoma into Texas. We're planning to check out Palo Duro Canyon tomorrow. We grind along I-40 until our butts need a break and hop off onto old 66 in Maclean, home of the Texas Route 66/Devil's Rope/Old Farming stuff museum. Free! This place is chock full of random goodness.

We roll into the Amarillo KOA around 6:30,set up, and go for a swim. Back at our campsite we see a limo from the Big Texan Steakhouse go by. We catch the 7:30 limo and when we get to the Big Texan it's a packed Saturday night and the wait is an hour. Dammit, I'm hungry. When we get seated it's upstairs so we can see the whole place and the waitress is super nice. A couple of elderly gentlemen with a guitar and fiddle come by and ask if we'd like a song. Being as I'm tired, wearing clothes several days in a row, and am on my second beer (thank you limo) I ask them to play Johnny Cash's "Sunday morning". They whip it out, singing and all. Amazing; they earned the fiver.Read more

You're never too old to learn new tricks

May 19, 2017 in the United States

So, i'm doing all the driving (this is Jill) and this so far has been an easy drive. For the first time I'm actually learning to drive using cruise control. Thank you Bill for talking me into using cruise control. I'm actually getting the hang of it. I might have to start using it when we get back home. Saving on gas at the same time!
