      Thumb Geyser

      October 17, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Leaving is so hard to do.

      August 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After the geo-thermal theme yesterday, it was hoped that today would be focussed on wildlife. Spend a bit of time watching & admiring and then the joys of the trek to Jackson. All the best laid plans and all that. While we had plenty of Bison fun - they owned that road! Couple of them ambled past & you could fully appreciate their size. Unfortunately we struggled to find a suitable spec to settle down in & when we did there was nothing to see. Another couple were in for the duration - chairs, food & drinks. Decided to push onto Hayden Valley - the other supposed hotspot for wildlife. Unfortunately it is far closer to the park resorts & West Yellowstone. It was rammed. Lots of Bison & lots of tourists. Off to the lake & find a nice spot for lunch. First try was blighted by a monstrous hotel taking over the entire lake front. Took a lakeside drive to no avail. Ended up at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which was on the lake. Only catch was, that you couldn't take food down to the lake shore - eh! My downbeat mood took a turn for the worse as we headed out of Yellowstone. We were stopped by a worker under the pretext of roadworks. Proceeded to sit there for 20 mins until we were given an escort to the next queue. No sign of roadworks. Another 15 mins & another escort through non-existent roadworks - just a final mile of resurfacing. Not happy. Hopefully Grand Teton National Park would cheer me up.Read more

YELLOWSTONE NP - West Thumb Geysir

      August 6, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 23 °C

Read more

      Low-key day

      September 3, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we took it slow-we slept in, spent some time around the campsite, and got a later start. It felt good!

We drove along to see the West Thumb Basin, one of the most actively changing geothermal areas of Yellowstone. The entire area runs along the south-western tip of the lake, and the geothermals are even active under the lake's surface near the shoreline. We saw mud pots and pools, geysers and fumaroles. Along the boardwalk we ran into a hobbyist who had written a book about the area and also works as a tour guide. She showed us which pool was brand new since last year, and which one had newly started overflowing.

Before heading home we ran up to Canyon Village where we ate burgers and fries at an old fashioned diner, then drove back through the Hayden Valley. The bison were crossing the road, and there are an incredible number of calves. We even got to see a very young calf (their coats start off very light brown and darken with age). We spent the evening underneath the nearly full moon at our campfire. An entire family camping nearby was playing Jailbreak, a game combining Hide n Seek & Kick the Can. Two little boys hid under our picnic table for about 30 minutes until they were caught by a little sister (with their mother's help, of course!)

Lower Loop #1: West Thumb Basin

      September 20, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 46 °F

We tried to get up and going this morning, lower loop is approximately 110 mi to complete.

First stop was the Yellowstone Lodge. We didn't have a chance to go inside, but wanted to have a peek at it. Definitely a yellow building, could be interesting. Maybe next time?

Our first real stop of the day was the West Thumb Basin. Again, many hot, boiling springs and almost "wannabe" geysers. What makes this basin so interesting to me, is it is juxtaposed to Yellowstone Lake. Steaming hot pools, next to a huge cool, blue lake.

The colors in some of these pools were gorgeous. I just simply enjoy looking at these very interesting, abnormal thermal environments.
