      Buchara

      August 26, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Read more

      Bukhara

      September 17, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Pleasant hotel and for once we are not overlooking the car park or something similar! See attached video. Pleasant breakfast then embarked on the 4-hour walking tour, cut short by Ted having to return to the hotel with stomach pains…. I continued to the embroidery workshop then went back to the hotel to check on Ted’s status. Suffice it to say we have both taken Imodium this morning! Tried to rejoin the group but couldn’t find them so currently stuck in hotel room with Ted….. 😕

Two hours later …. Georgina the GRJ guide came back for me. I had missed the musicians’ workshop, carpet workshop (thank goodness!) and the coffee break but rejoined the group to go to Fortress Ark which, before the Red Army arrived in the early 1920s, had been the residence of Bukhara’s rulers. It turns out several people have gippy tummies and, for moral support, I accompanied a group member to the Ark’s toilets (photo enclosed for your edification!). Again, 2 stern ladies were sitting in a hut receiving payment for use of the facilities, such as they were. They were most aggrieved that I wasn’t partaking (and therefore not paying!) There was a small sink with tap trickling water outside their hut and they were only giving one squirt of liquid soap for my new acquaintance’s use. There was much muttering and sour looks when two squirts were asked for!
Back down to the square and our trusty bus drivers had turned up to transport us to a pleasant sort of open-air park for a quick spot of lunch. The visit to the puppet workshop turned out to be a non-starter as the puppet master had gone to a funeral so it was on to a gallery where we had a little talk and viewed the paintings. During the week 10-14 year old deaf and dumb children attend to learn painting there.
Very hot day today. On return to the hotel Ted was found to be better but not A1. We are therefore wimping out of the evening activity i.e. cooking demo and meal in family house but c’est la vie! Video of musician courtesy of another group member.

      Bukara

      August 28, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

      Bukhara

      September 9, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Took another high speed train from Tashkent to Bukhara - one of Uzbekistan's ancient cities and famous stops on the Silk Road. After checking into our guest house, we went for a late lunch (plov and Uzbek salad), a quick wander through the old town, followed by a stop at Silk Road Tea House for tea and sweets to escape from the heat. We caught up with Dav (Aussie we met in Kyrgyzstan) to watch the minaret light up and for dinner.

We spent the next few days in Bukhara wandering the old town, visiting mosques, madrassahs (Muslim schools turned souvenir and craft stores) and markets, and eating shashlik and plov on a daily basis. We enjoyed walking through the old town, which made you feel like you were walking back in time through a beautiful ancient city. We stopped into the central market where we were overwhelmed with kindness from local vendors selling spices, tea and dried fruits. We also got up early to visit the Sunday animal market and Old Bazaar, where we were the only foreigners and received many funny looks. We loved our time in Bukhara!

      Happy in Bukhara

      January 27 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Read more

Outside of Bukhara; Registan at night

      August 30, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

In the morning, we took a taxi to the summer residence of the last emir. It was a very beautiful “dacha” with exquisite decorations and lavish displays of the many gifts that emir received from various emissaries. We then went to another interesting site - a necropolis of many 10th century graves of the prophet Mohammed relatives, named Chor Bakr. It was a very quiet and peaceful place, and our guide, a local woman, displayed reverence over this sacred place. After the tour, we left to the train station and took a high speed train to Samarkand. We arrived to Samarkand in the evening, and stayed right next to its main square, the Registan. We went to see the three Medresses of this square in the dark, and enjoyed the music and light show of traditional songs, with the colorful lights dancing across the majestic buildings.Read more

      Bukhara

      August 29, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today we took a 5 hour walking tour around the old city of Bukhara. It was quite incredible to learn about the layers of history. Bukhara is very old town in the Sill Route but only three buildings remain from the 10th century because the rest of the city was completely destroyed by Gingis Khan. Then the city was rebuilt during Amir Timur times in 15th century. The last emir was in early 20th century - he ran away from the Bolsheviks to Afghanistan. There are many stunning Medresses but also some uniquely gorgeous minaret and mausoleum made from the bricks, with different brick patterns. Old city is so beautiful with the labyrinth of narrow streets and a large Jewish quarter. Sadly, most Bukhara Jews left in the 90s. There is one synagogue bug it was closed. In the evening I went to the hammam, and took pictures of the minaret and Medresses in the dark.Read more

      Spaziergang durch die Altstadt Bucharas

      August 31, 2023 in Uzbekistan ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C
