    A Day In Oslo

    July 12, 2017 in Norway ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

A sunny and warm day in Oslo, so I took a trip by Metro to the Holmenkollen ski jump, used in the Winter Olympics. A steep walk up hill, then a lift to the top of the jump and an observation deck with views of the countryside. Interesting to stand at the top of the jump and get the view that the jumpers get, although of course no snow. Back in Oslo I went to the attractive and bustling Aker Brygge harbourside area, for a 10 minute boat ride over to the Kon Tiki and Fram museums. If you have an interest in polar exploration, as I do, then you will love the Fram museum, where the ship is displayed with lots of interesting exhibits, and you can go onboard and walk the deck. Next door in the Kon Tiki museum, the original raft is displayed, which is amazing to see in real life considering the journey it made across the Pacific.Read more

    North to Alesund

    July 13, 2017 in Norway ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Only a 40 minute flight from Oslo to Alesund, with lovely view of the islands and fjords on the approach. Alesund is a pretty little town. I eventually found my hotel after dragging my suitcase up a very steep hill and having to ask a couple of friendly locals, who kindly escorted me right to the door. I took a walk up Mount Aksla, 400 steps to viewing point overlooking the town, and walked back down along a path through the trees. The view from my room is very scenic but curtains are thin so don't do a good job of blocking out the midnight sun. It seems strange to go to sleep when the sun is still streaming through the window.Read more

By Road and Sea to Geiranger

    July 14, 2017 in Norway ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

A long day trip today with Geiranger as my destination. The tour was self-guided using public buses and ferries, but had one ticket which took you on the whole journey. It was easy to get around following the instructions about which bus to get on, and it felt more like being on a coach tour as the buses had a toilet on board. At Hellesylt I waited in the rain for the car ferry to Geiranger. The trip up the fjord was a little disappointing scenically due to the cloudy and drizzly weather, but it was tranquil with wispy waterfalls cascading down the sides of the fjord. The little town of Geiranger was rather over run with tourists, and there was loud music playing from a cruise ship anchored in the harbour. I passed on the tourist shops all selling the same thing (woolly socks, postcards, woolly hats) and walked behind the town past a camp site to a beautiful waterfall cascading down the rock side with an inviting wooden stairway leading up its edge. This is my kind of place. The climb gave lovely views back to the fjord the higher I went, and at the top sat the Union Hotel, which seemed like a nice place to stay if you had a room with a view. Back in the town I treated myself to an expensive ice cream and caught the next bus for my journey back to Alesund which took a road high above the fjord where the driver stopped briefly for us to get out at a viewing point for photos of Geirangerfjord. After a ferry crossing, and change of bus, I was back in Alesund, 10 hours after I left.Read more

    A Journey to Trollstigen

    July 15, 2017 in Norway ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Took a tour today through the Fjordland area, with the highlight being the Trollstigen highway. From the impressive viewing point there was a view down into the canyon where the winding road takes 11 hairpin bends as it descends. It was fun to stand and watch the distant cars negotiate the road knowing that soon our bus would be going down there. Our driver took it slowly as the road was narrow and coaches, motorhomes and lots of motorbikes going in both directions meant that some of the bends were quite tricky to get round. Halfway down we passed the Stigfossen waterfall, and when finally down in the valley it was a wonderful looking back up at the road. A lovely lunch stop at a rustic restaurant with grass covered roof, and then the long drive back to Alesund.Read more

    Bus Ride to Bergen

    July 16, 2017 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Today I set off on a Nettbus to Bergen, an 8 hour trip down the coast through the scenery of the fjords. There were 4 short ferry crossings during the journey, the longest being 20 minutes, where it was nice to step out of the bus for a while and stand in the fresh air as we crossed the still waters of the fjord. The bus and ferry system is very efficient, everything perfectly timed, and although a long day it was fairly comfortable, but I did wonder after about 6 hours whether it would have been better to fly. But I wanted to see the scenery, and passing through the little towns, where locals got off and on the bus, often at remote bus stops, I felt like I was seeing the country. At last we crossed the large bridge into Bergen arriving at the large bus station at 8.20pm. Sun was still shining and I had just a quick walk to my hotel, to go to bed in the sunlight.Read more

    Exploring Bergen

    July 17, 2017 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

A rainy morning in Bergen. I took the funicular up Mount Floyen for a misty view over Bergen, and walked some of the walking trails through the quiet forests, the occasional small lake, and was pleased to see the sun breaking through the clouds. Not many people around so it was very tranquil. I decided to walk back down to town along a zigzag road emerging at the bottom of the funicular station where a long queue had now formed of people waiting to go up. Early starts are always worth the effort if you want peace and quiet. A quick wander round the fish market and the Brygge old town area. It was busy now as there was a cruise ship docked. After Alesund, Bergen seemed just a little too crowded for my liking.Read more
