      Angkor Wat Kambodscha

      Agkor Wat. Die größte Tempelanlage der Welt. Da kam man aus dem Staunen nicht mehr raus. Der Mund stand wirklich dauerhaft offen. Am ersten Tag machten wir eine geführte Tour mit Sen. Sonnenaufgang über dem Haupttempel. Danach erklärte und zeigte er uns noch 3 weitere Tempel. Unter anderem die Filmkulisse zu Tomb Raider mit Angelina Jolie. Es war so heiß. Uns rann der Schweißen in Strömen. Das änderte sich auch in den 2 folgenden Tagen nicht, als Rainer und ich mit dem Scooter Tempelhopping betrieben. Dass hier 300.000 Menschen und 8.000 Elefanten gearbeitet haben, zu einer Zeit als London und Paris nur ca. 12.000 Einwohner hatten, ist genau so unvorstellbar wie die schreckliche Geschichte, die die Menschen hier erleiden mussten durch die Roten Khmer. Ein Land voller Gegensätze, das noch sehr unter fehlenden Touristen leidet (jetzt wieder ca. 20% vom Vor-COVID-Niveau). Wir sind jetzt in Hanoi und fahren gleich zur Halong Bucht für 2 Tage. Danach werden wir wegen vorhergesagter extremer Hitze unsere Südostasientour abbrechen. Wie es weitergeht wissen wir selbst noch nicht genau. Wir sind sehr traurig, dass wir unsere Planungen über den Haufen werfen müssen. Aber so ist das halt manchmal. Liebe Grüße nach Hause wo es jetzt hoffentlich endlich Frühling ist.Read more

      Day 12

      Some foods of Hanoi

      Today we went about to a number of places to try some Hanoi specialties, as well as Taiwanese specialties! Here's a list, pics and thoughts on each adventure:

      1. Chicken Phở at Phở 26.
      The best phở of the trip. Light, fragrant, tasty, with high quality ingredients.

      2. Sweet Buns from Roti King (Vanilla and Matcha).
      These were not at all what we expected. They had very little filling in them. Some bits tasted like a biscuit, others a croissant. They were light and tasty though and we enjoyed them. Note: matcha in Vietnam SUCKS. Every time I've had something matcha, it's not tasted at all like matcha. This was the best matcha thing I've had, because there was ZERO matcha flavour hahaha.

      3. Egg Coffee and Egg Chocolate
      Hanoi is famous for egg coffee. I've had it, and for me it's a miss. The froth on top is tasty, but it's very very rich and sweet, and then the coffee underneath is outrageously bitter. You have to mix it a bunch and even then it's not that great. I've tried all 3 speciality Vietnamese Coffees, and Salt Coffee smashes the other 2 out of the park. In saying that, Egg Chocolate is FANTASTIC. It's a much better pairing than egg coffee as dark chocolate has a bitterness that suits the richness of the egg.

      4. This isn't a Hanoi speciality, but we went to another hidden cafe/restaurant. This time, it was NOT a tourist trap, and it lived up to the reviews. It was gorgeous. An adorable coffee shop with incredible ambience both downstairs in the broody, rich area, and upstairs amongst the plants and mini beach seats. It was a quiet and tranquil respite from the hustle bustle of the city. We ordered 2 fruit mocktails (spiced apple and mulberry, they were delish), Michael had a Baileys Chocolate (yum) and I had my iced salt coffee (equal best to Bikini Bottom in Da Nang). We spent around 90 minutes here as they had free wifi and we just wanted to chill.

      Taiwanese Food Court Food
      After our fun gaming session, we got a bunch of snacks to make up the rest of our food for the day. I loved Taiwanese food when I went in 2018, so wanted to share some faves with Michael. Here's how it faired:

      1. Taiwanese beef noodle soup.
      Delish. Michael's fave soup of the trip. Hearty, yet delicate. YUM
      2. Beef and pickle bao.
      At first I was a bit freaked out, but then after pulling it apart it tastes like an Asian version of a hamburger. Pretty tasty!
      3. Crab roe dumplings.
      Michael's fave dumplings of the trip. Scrummo.
      4. Taiwanese dough pork dumplings.
      My favourite dumplings of the trip. Eye rolling, god tier for me.
      5. Popcorn fried chicken.
      Best popcorn chicken we've had in years.

      We also had some yummy ice-cream for dessert. Michael got the cutest piglet icecream haha.

      I actually can't believe how top tier this food was given it was food court food at a shopping mall. Blown away.

      Overall, I'd say the day was another successful day for our bellies!      Read more

      Halongbucht

      Die Halongbucht: ein gemischtes Vergnügen! Bis jetzt habe ich nur begeistert von dieser Reise berichtet. Und eigentlich hätte ich gedacht, dass die Halongbucht die Krönung der Vietnamreise werden würde. Leider war das nicht so.
      Wir hatten über unser Hotel in Hanoi eine geführte Zwei-Tage-Schiffsreise in die Halongbucht gebucht. Gestern wurden wir in aller Frühe mit dem Bus vom Hotel abgeholt Nach drei Stunden Fahrt kamen wir in Halong an und wurden mit einem Zubringerboot zum Schiff gebracht. Ein schönes Schiff, große Kabinen, sauber mit grossem Badezimmer und Balkon. Superessen.. Leider hatten wir ausgesprochenes Pech mit dem Wetter. Erst regnete es, dann war es zwar trocken, aber sehr diesig, so dass wir von der landschaftlichen Schönheit zunächst wenig sehen konnten. Das war wirklich schade!! Aber damit wären wir klar gekommen, denn auf dem Schiff wurde nicht nur reichlich gutes Essen geboten, sondern auch Programm: Kajakfahren, Schwimmen, Kochkurs,... . Kajakfahren haben wir gemacht. Beim Kochkurs auch gerne zugeschaut. Aber auf das Schwimmen haben wir verzichtet. Denn ( nun kommt der wirklich betruebliche Teil) das Wasser ist unglaublich verschmutzt! Es sind viele, viele Schiffe unterwegs und anscheinend gehen sie mit ihrem Abfall nicht sorgsam um. Alles Mögliche schwamm im Wasser. Es war regelrecht eklig. Ich weiß nicht, ob wir diesen Ausflug gemacht hätten, wenn wir das gewusst hätten. Aber die Landschaft ist jedenfalls eigentlich großartig. Deshalb hier trotz allem ein paar Fotos.      Read more

      Hanoi

      Hanoi from the 17-19th.
      On the 17th we just checked into the hotel, walked around the city a bit and then went out for dinner. Went to a really nice rooftop restaurant (I found it 😌) with amazing views of the lake and skyline.
      On the 18th we started the day by visiting the Temple of literature and then the Ethnology museum. It was really interesting to learn about the exams that Vietnamese students had to take many centuries ago and all the different ethnic groups in Vietnam and how their languages and way of living have developed over time. The temple of literature was very very pretty. There were also loads of nursery kids who kept waving at us, it was really cute. We then went to Hao Lo prison where Vietnamese prisoners were held under french colonisation and then were American soldiers were held under the Vietnamese government. We also visited train street which was a really cool place.
      In the afternoon I just wondered around some more and found this really chill cafe with about 5 floors. The food was really good, very cool interior and an amazing french jazz playlist 🤩🤩also cute to see loads of local students studying in there together.
      In the evening we went to a rooftop restaurant and had dinner before heading to a bar and then going back to the hotel.
      On the 19th we left in the morning for Halong bay.      Read more
