      Farewell dinner at Lookout Restaurant

      15 Juli 2023, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

By the time we had done these things, we only had an hour to get ready for our farewell dinner. We were all going to the Lookout Restaurant with views over the gorge which the Victoria Falls flow into. It’s also the location for all the zipwire and flying fox activities. Laban had organised taxis to take us there and bring us back. We had a lovely meal and were entertained by the Black Amakhwezi Ensemble who sang and danced. The crew came along, and we organised to pay for their meals. There were one or two dissenting voices who quibbled over a couple of dollars, but we didn’t let it spoil the atmosphere. It was a great way to spend our last night together.Baca selengkapnya

A morning in Victoria Falls town

      16 Juli 2023, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Breakfast was from 7am this morning, but there was no pressure to be on time for it. We didn’t wake up until 7.20! We wandered over, though, as one or two people were leaving early doors, and we didn’t want to miss saying goodbye to them. We stayed chatting to a few people for a while and said our farewells to Sarah, who is flying to Singapore to continue her travels in Asia. We then went to update our emails before walking into town. The town is full of souvenir shops and little else! We looked in a few of them, and I bought some country patches with the idea that I will stitch them on to a bag before our next trip.

We returned to the Lookout Café to watch some of our group do their adrenaline activities. On the way in, we saw warthogs and banded mongoose. We sat with John and Trish, who had the same idea! They didn’t stay to see the others, but then Nathan and Georgie joined us. We admired the view as we enjoyed our coffee. Sadly, there was a bloated dead hippo at the bottom of the gorge. We saw Maddie do her flying fox ride, but the others were doing the canopy rope walk first, which would take them to the other side of the gorge and would take an hour. We decided not to wait as there were other things we wanted to do.

My elephant necklace that I bought in South Africa had broken on my way into the restaurant. The waiter had kindly collected up all the beads and wrapped them in a serviette. He suggested that I take them to the craft market opposite the entrance to the falls to get them rethreaded. So, this is where we headed. I met a guy called Antonio who said he could do the job for US$5, so I left it with him.

Zimbabwe is such a poor country with an economy that’s on its knees and 80% unemployment. Everyone is trying to make a living by selling you some product or service. You get hassled every time you walk down the street. It’s heartbreaking, but you can’t help everyone! The most common item these people are trying to sell is obsolete and worthless Zimbabwean trillion dollar notes!

We then went to visit the falls. Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River, which provides habitat for several unique species of plants and animals. It is located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and is one of the world's largest waterfalls, with a width of 1,708 metres.

Archeological sites and oral history describe a long record of African knowledge of the site. Though known to some European geographers before the 19th century, Scottish missionary David Livingstone identified the falls in 1855, providing the English colonial name of Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria. Since the mid-20th century, the site has been an increasingly important source of tourism. Zambia and Zimbabwe both have national parks and tourism infrastructure at the site. Research in the late 2010s found that precipitation variability due to climate change is likely to change the character of the fall in the near future.

We made for the entrance to the Victoria Falls National Park. Foreigners have to pay US$50 each to go in. Once inside, you follow a marked trail to visit 12 viewpoints. As you go, you get progressively wetter!! We were wearing our rain jackets, but mine, in particular, was useless against the deluge we had to walk through. We were absolutely soaked!! There is so much water in the falls at the moment. We took some lovely photos at the start of the trail, but by about halfway through, there was so much spray and mist that it was difficult to see anything at all! The whole place is absolutely stunning, though. It is undoubtedly a bucket list destination that everyone should see at some point in their life.

      Lunch at the Three Monkeys

      16 Juli 2023, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We then walked back into Zimbabwe. We went to pick up my necklace from Antonio, who had done a great job. Our intention had been to go back to the Lookout for lunch, but we changed our minds and headed to the Three Monkeys instead. I’m glad we did because we met up with Maddie, Phil, Mel, Liz, and Iona, and had lunch with them. We heard all about their zipline activities and watched the videos! Mark had crumbed prawns and crocodile skewers for lunch. I had a more mundane margarita pizza. It was all delicious!

After lunch, we headed back to camp in time for our 4pm welcome meeting to meet our new group. We are to be joined by Jenny and Greg, Niamh from Ireland, Corrina and Mika from Canada, and Joey, Jilly, and Tina from Australia. Despite our fears, they all seem OK. It will be odd, though, to completely change the dynamic of the group.

T-shirt man arrived with the shirts for those leaving today. Most of them had something wrong with them! I hope ours are right tomorrow!

We then said our goodbyes to Nathan and Georgie, Natasha, Mel, Ken, and Maddie and Phil, promising to keep in touch via the wonders of the internet and social media!

We went for a drink at the bar, and then went back to our lodge. I spent the evening catching up with my trip diary, the intention being to spend tomorrow posting!

      A free day

      17 Juli 2023, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today was a free day. We had decided not to do any of the optional activities, so we spent the day on site. We had breakfast with the others at 8am. The newbies seem OK – time will tell 😊. The t-shirt guy turned up while we were eating. Unfortunately, Namibia was completely missing from our signpost, and the route was wrong. He took them away again, promising to fix them and bring them back later!

After breakfast, Patrick and Laban had to go to the police station to have the truck checked. A baboon got inside yesterday and managed to crack the windscreen while he was trying to get out! We needed to get permission to drive the truck in its current state and then get it fixed in Bulawayo, our next stop. They came back a couple of hours later with the necessary permit.

I spent the morning doing posts, but the internet connection was very slow, so I didn’t get anywhere near caught up. Mark went to the supermarket to top up our snack bag. At lunchtime, he made pasta with tomatoes and bacon, which hit the spot. After lunch, I tried again to get some more posts on, and I edited some photos. I was sitting in the sunshine outside reception, so I kept being interrupted by people coming and going to activities! By 4pm, I gave up. We went to the bar for a couple of drinks and then went to retrieve the laundry we left this morning. They promised us it would be back by 5.30pm, but it wasn’t! TIA!! 😂 It finally turned up at about 7.15pm! We then went to the truck to sort out our bags for the next couple of days. None of the crew were around to ask about our T-shirts, so we’ll have to leave that until the morning.

      Victoria Falls arrival

      4 September 2023, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Overnight flight to Nairobi and landed early but we had to queue jump hundreds (some were a little annoyed, mainly French but we didn't mind that) to make our last connection to Victoria Falls, a 3 hour flight.
In all its been 29 hours travelling house door to hotel door!
Ilala Lodge Hotel is a bit special, we can hear the falls and see the spray above the trees, also there are animals right outside, so doors will be locked at night.
Won the lottery as you can see, will be sharing it out when back.
We did a Ra-Ikane Sunset River cruise tonight. It was a bit more successful than our whale watching! Saw hippos, elephants and a few birds and a lot of other boats. And more outside hotel room tonight.
Early night 7:30pm, we are very tired.
Tomorrow is early start to see the falls.

      Zimbabwe

      23 Oktober 2019, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 39 °C

We were up early and paid $49 each to go on a 3 hour game drive to Chobe National Park. We saw so many animals despite the area having so many vehicles. We drove down along the Chobe River and saw one male lion and fairly near were a lion and lioness lying together, the guide said that they might be mating. We also saw them lying in the shade 20 meters off the road late in the trip. Other sightings included antelope, hippos (in and out of the water), lots of baboons, many with young they were carrying on their backs or the young clinging to the other’s belly. We saw a herd of elephants right in front of the truck, including a mother and 2 week old baby. Also sighted were lots of birds, Giraffes, Kudus, small Crocodiles, a group of Banded Mongoose. The big sighting was a Lion sleeping in some shade; we were only 10 feet away from him, so we were glad that he didn’t wake up! Then we drove across the border to Zimbabwe and stayed in a beautiful Lodge for the last night of this part of our trip. For dinner and the evening we went to the Boma, a fancy dinner and evening entertainment establishment that had singing, drumming and dancing after dinner, African style. It was a lot of fun! I put a photo of that on tomorrow’s post.Baca selengkapnya

      Kasane, Botswana and Boat Ride

      22 Oktober 2019, Zimbabwe ⋅ ⛅ 39 °C

We drove to Kasane and settled in our Lodge before going on a sunset cruise on the Chobe River for 2 1/2 hours. Unfortunately we had a very small aluminum boat with 14 people in it so were unable to move about, which was uncomfortable and less desirable for taking photos.Baca selengkapnya

      The amazing Victoria Falls

      8 April, Zimbabwe ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Ankunft in Livingstone, Zimbabwe in der Lilala Lodge in der Nähe der Victoriafalls. Nette Begrüssung durch Bushböcke und Warzenschweine. Bald geht es los auf eine Bootsfahrt auf dem Zambesi.

      Goodbye, visit to Zambia

      24 Oktober 2019, Zimbabwe ⋅ ⛅ 39 °C

We had breakfast with our tour group and then said our goodbyes. We decided not to go to Victoria Falls because we saw them eight years ago when we were here, and there is not very much water in the river going over the falls right now because of the drought. Instead, we decided to have an adventure and walk from our lodge down to the bridge that crosses the Zambezi river canyon, and across to Zambia. It was about a mile over and a mile back with four stops at immigration, two for each country. There were lots of locals hounding us to buy their products; we bought a couple of small wooden carvings and some old Zimbabwe currency. It was probably 40°C and extremely hot but it was a bit of an adventure, and we were glad we did. We came back to Victoria Falls town and did a little bit more shopping and looking in the stores and then came back to the lodge for a swim in the pool and dinner at a brewpub only a block away.Baca selengkapnya
