    Starting Out

    20. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Left at about 13:00, happy to be leaving. Had to stop just up the driveway for a couple of final preparations (turning off turbine & set up security camera). Battery died! So we made it about 40 feet 😕.
Got that solved and back on the road, hoping to make it past Kamploops.

  • Little Fort

    20. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

After a few stops in Vernon we made it to just outside of Little Fort. Spent the night at the top of a pass in a roadside turnout. There were probably better spots, but we didn’t know how much farther we would have to go to find one.Læs mere

  • Cowboys

    21. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Woke to a crisp morning. After some quick calculations we decided to turn around and go back to Little Fort for gas. Lesson learned fill up when you can. It was early in the morning, 6:00, so we didn’t know if they would be open. They were closed, but the pumps were working 😁.
Right across from the gas station a group of cowboys were working their cattle, super cool. Guess we ran low on gas so we could see them.

  • Sunset Lake

    21. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

BC has “Recreation Sites” throughout the province. They are basically user maintained camp sites. They are usually off the beaten path. Sunset lake is one of those, it was about 6km off the highway. Very nice lake, campground, and people. We shared a spot with a local couple who were kind enough to let us share their fire. Renée borrowed their kayak and went for a late evening paddle.Læs mere

  • Sawmill Point

    22. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Stewart-Casiar highway… We joined up with Renée’s original trip plan. Originally she was biking from Prince Rupert to Whitehorse. Saw four bears, and several caribou. There was still snow on the ground for a good portion of the trip. Got hosed at the gas station in Dease Lake, price jumped 30 cents a litre from the last fill.
Stopped at Sawmill Point for the night, unfortunately the road to the campground was covered in snow, and the lake was frozen over.
The next morning some sort of beaver/otter/muskrat thing popped it’s head out of the ice right beside us.

  • Unexpected Stop

    23. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Saw a sign with a camera so figured a view point maybe. Pulled in and there were all these old trucks. Then I noticed the sign “Ross River 226”. We had randomly pulled into the south end of the Canol highway.
Strangely enough we had been debating whether to come back from Faro via the Robert Service highway or the South Canol.

  • Whitehorse

    25. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Spent a few days in Whitehorse, camped at Marsh Lake. Did the tourist thing, Miles Canyon, Paddle Wheelers, Beringia museum. Shopping of course, last minute gear and food.

  • Renée is Off

    26. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Renée is finally on her way, all geared up, all hugged up. First day is Fox Lake, then Twin Lakes, then we meet back up at Tachun Creek north of Carmacks.

Update May 26: Renée made it just fine to Fox Lake.Læs mere

  • Carcross

    26. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

After sending Renée off, we headed down to Skagway for the day, about 150km. The first stop was at Emerald Lake. I love how the emerald colour is in the shape of a heart.
Then we came across a desert, not the chocolate kind, the gritty sandstorm kind. Very cool hiked up to the top for a great view. There are lots of new species of insects and plants only found in this desert.Læs mere

  • The Road to Skagway

    26. maj 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

So the plan was to go to Skagway and spend the afternoon there. Along the way we ran into a small problem … The scenery was amazing!! The road had pullouts everywhere and boy did we use them. The mountains were covered in snow, the lakes were beautiful, and the valleys long and wide.
Isabelle wanted to visit the Chilkoot trail head, a flashback to when she climbed the trail in her youth.
We didn’t make it into Skagway until 4:30pm, and that’s after we gained an hour crossing into Alaska.

  • Skagway

    26. maj 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Skagway is an interesting place. First off you descend over 1000 meters to the ocean. So you go from snow covered mountains where spring is just beginning to sea level and a lush summer experience.
The streets are meant to be old western store fronts with boardwalk sidewalks. There must be 40 jewelry stores in 4 square blocks (seriously a lot of jewelry stores). We couldn’t figure out why so many, then we saw the cruise ships, 4 of them. We were told they come everyday and dump 12,000-16,000 people into the town. 14,000 new shoppers everyday. Crazy!

  • Back to Canada

    27. maj 2022, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Funny thing happened on the way back to Canada… We knew about “ArriveCAN” a phone app that you HAVE to use to get back into Canada. When we went over we turned off our phones so we would not get roaming charges, the restaurant in Skagway didn’t have WiFi, so we didn’t bother to fill it out.
We show up at the border and sure enough no entry without it. As luck would have it (and this is pure luck), the custom’s office just had WiFi installed that afternoon. We filled it out there and were on our way. If they didn’t have WiFi we had two choices: Quarantine for 14 days and take 2 PCR tests, or go back to Skagway and fill out the ArriveCAN info.

All this at 9:00pm. We new there was a campground not far up the road. Isabelle spotted a tent at a boat launch so we stopped to check it out. Way nicer than the campground and probably one of the nicest spots we’ve camped at on our trip.

  • Catching up to Renée

    28. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

  • Five Finger Rapids

    29. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Rest day today. Back to Five Finger Rapids for a better look. Took the stairs (200+), down to the rapids.
There is one bar of cell service on the first platform of the stairs. We manage to get service in the weirdest places. Every so often we will be walking along and hear the ding of a message coming through.
Later in the afternoon we went fishing in the creek. Renée was the only one with a license so she caught all the fish.

  • Wrong Lake

    30. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Wrong Lake is one of the many stocked lakes throughout the Yukon, like Fisheye Lake. Not an official campground but peaceful and quiet.

That is until Sam, Wes, Joe and the two Shane’s rolled in. They are part of the crew building a swimming pool at Pelly Crossing. Two plumbers, two carpenters, and the boss. They brought a small boat and their fishing gear. Along with that they brought several pounds of frozen hamburger, a huge slab of thick cut bacon, a Costco sized block of cheese, smokies, dozen eggs, enough buns for 10 people, and a dozen squeeze bottles of various stuff, a bottle of Crown Royal, Gin, and a decent amount of beer. What they didn’t bring was anything to cook with, just one large stoneware pot (most of them had filet knives).
They went straight to fishing and only Wes the young guy caught a fish. We took pity on him and gave him some foil, onion, butter, and a half lemon we had. He cooked it on the fire and it came out very tasty.
To their credit they managed to thaw and cook up their food. Shane-1, carved a couple of green willows to act as a grill, and another to use as a utensil. Sam cooked the bacon in the big pot, then the now thawed burgers in the bacon fat. They too were delicious.
Then as quickly as they came they packed up and headed out. It was a very entertaining evening. We will be sure to stop in at Pelly Crossing on our way back to say hi and check on the progress of the pool.

  • Mayo

    31. maj 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Meeting up with Renée in Mayo, she wants to check out Keno, maybe do a hike up there.
To be honest Mayo was not a great place, very rundown, messy and the people were very unfriendly. To top it all off we had a major case of the Mosquitoes. They were getting into the camper somehow so no sleep for us. We did figure it out and haven’t been bothered since.Læs mere

  • Keno

    1. juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Went for a nice morning walk around the lake at the campground.

Then off to Keno. Renée was told by the guy at Braeburn (remember the cinnamon buns) that Mike in Keno makes good pizza. Unfortunately when we got there 1) Mike was not there, he was out of town for the day, and 2) All. The trails and back roads were still covered in snow (Keno is quite a bit higher in elevation).

We did manage to visit the mining museum, and the guy there really knew his stuff so that was interesting.

  • Off to Dawson City

    2. juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

This is leg three of Renée’s bike trip, Mayo to Dawson). So once again we said our goodbyes

The scenery is actually kind of uninteresting along that stretch of highway, so we didn’t stop much. We pulled into the campground just before Dawson, but there was a pollen storm. In the time it took us to eat lunch everything was covered in this fine yellow dust. It was so thick that we couldn’t really breath.

Originally the plan was to stay there and head into Dawson the next day, but the pollen was too thick so we pushed on. Stopped at the visitors centre, went across the river (ferry ride is pretty wild) and found a campsite on the Yukon River.

Got all gussied up in our best camp clothes and hit the show at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s.

The Top of the World Highway winds along the a ridge of mountains from Dawson City into Alaska. You can see distant mountain ranges on both sides of the highway. The Ogilvie mountains on one side and the Richardson mountains on the other. We went as far as the border then cam back to hook up with Renée. • Tourist Dawson

    4. juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Took care of some chores today. Then up to Robert Service’s cabin where I did my recital of The Cremation of Sam McGee.

Next up was The Dome. Basically a hill with a bald spot at the top. The theory is that even though Dawson is below the Arctic Circle if you go up to The Dome on the solstice you can watch the sun go all the way around. Anyway fantastic view of Dawson and area.

Then we were back to Gertie’s so Renée could see the show. It’s really three shows at 8:30, 10:00, and midnight. They get racier and rowdier as the night goes on. The first time we didn’t stay for the last show, but this time we did. It was worth it. We were greeted with a sunset at 1:00am when we came out.

  • Tim

    5. juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

So while we were at The Top of The World, we saw a fellow biking like Renée. We stopped to talk to him and found out he too was going to bike the Dempster. We chatted for a bit then carried on. That was the day we met up with Renée in Dawson so we told her about Tim. It was the first we had heard about anyone else crazy enough to bike the Dempster.

Back up a bit now, Renée got a little hooked on Japanese anime during university. So she decided to teach herself Japanese. She’s doing quite well for a beginner.

The next night the three of us are pulling into the campground and who do we see? Tim! So we start chatting about cycling etc. and wouldn’t you know it, Tim is from Japan.

So now we start seeing Tim or his bike everywhere we go. Towards the end of “resupply day” we run into him one more time. We invite him to dinner at the camp site, cooked some pork chops and potatoes over the fire and had a great evening. Renée taught him how to light a fire with flint & steel (which he did first try), and he taught Renée some Japanese.

We passed Tim on his way out there, and Brent who has done it once already on a bike and loved it so much he’s doing it again. So at some point on the trail she’ll have company.Læs mere
