We explored areas near Porto and enjoyed walking cobblestone streets, Gaia, and the world’s most beautiful books store. Which served as part inspiration for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts. What an incredible area! Tomorrow is our first day walking on the Camino!Read more

Wonderful day and we are so happy we stayed a few days exploring this amazing city! It is known for the River Douro, Sardines. Cork, and seafood. Very nice people, university town, clean, low crime, lots of live music!!Read more

Camino Day 1: Matsinhos, Portugal to Vil

We walked up the coast for 15 miles today. It was stunning and challenging.
My main reflections today related to:
We don’t need many things in life.
We do need to see the beauty around us, within us, and within others.
Life is fragile and short, handle with care.
Change is inevitable, adjust.
Greet and meet people with love along the way.

I met 3 women from Holland who were warm and blunt, with lots of laughter.
Three men from Australia who were lively, friendly, and fun to talk with.
Four women from Germany who were very nice and welcoming with there experiences.
Others who we greeted with Bom Caminha!

It was a very good day on the Camino and we ate almost nothing. We had espresso and an apple, skipped lunch, and found out everything is closed here (except the bar) on Sundays.Read more

We walked 20 miles and it was amazing and hard. We were rewarded with a wonderful countryside villa by two warm and generous Portuguese hosts who opened their home to us and even made us dinner. Lots of reflection on family, friends, and forgiveness.Read more

Crossover to Spain via a short ferry ride. I cannot believe Portugal! Beautiful villages, incredible scenery of the coast, rolling mountains, vineyards, nice people who say. Bom Caminha and Bom dia. Small cafes with other pilgrims passing through. My thoughts were about the past, growing up and experiences. Nice to think about life and learnings, people and places. The past is past. Today was a short day with only a 9.6 mile walk. It was beautiful and hard. The backpack felt very heavy near the end but it was beautiful walking into town. We are officially half way through our Camino walk and the experience is unbelievable! Baonia is a city with a large cove, marina, beaches, and lots of cool outdoor cafes and markets.
Tomorrow will be a long walk with over 20 miles. Please wish me well as I’ve heard it is rough.
I want to remember the people we’ve met who have become part if our experience.

Today was only 13 miles, but some of the steep hills with our backpacks were brutal. Many of the views were spectacular. The stories we heard of people from all over were amazing. I suffered near the end from legs that were yelling at me and stiff knees. It was hard to move. I am fortunate because with a hot shower, nap, and yes, even an Advil, it helped.

TravelerI think I missed a day or two to post! Let me check. We have walked every day, a low of 7.5 miles to a high of just over 20. With an average between 13-15 miles. The distance is not so bad as the climbing with our heavy backpacks😃. We each have gotten 1 blister which we have managed well. The end of the days are harder, of course, than the mornings😀. We are usually out the door no later than 8 am and done between 3:30 and 6, depending on the mileage and mountains.

Only 7.5 mile walk today in amazing weather! We are meeting so many more people as the Coastal and Central trails have now merged. We met wonderful new friends from Vancouver. They were a young couple seeking purpose, new cultural experiences, and meaning. We also heard beautiful live music and a funny vendor with a great outlook on life!Read more

Our walk today was about 14 miles to our lodging. We saw an old Roman Bridge, waterfalls, vineyards everywhere, an old man tilling his field, amazing vegetarian soup and salad, and fresh oranges and espresso.

I have this sacred space to explore my inner and sacred self and how it shows up on this amazing earth. I’m finding that everything I need is here and I’m sharing a spiritual journey with countless pilgrims in this abundant life. I understand and am thinking about the privilege and responsibility I have to contribute.Read more

Today we walked from Caldas de Reis to Padron, Spain. We walked 11 miles to our hotel, it is getting hot here now in the afternoon. I swam in the pool, and although freezing, it felt great!! Thursday was our final walk on the Camino de Santiago, Portuguese Coastal route. We walked 15 miles and my left leg has been telling me it is planning lots of revenge for the steep hills, cobblestone streets, and heavy backpack for about 6-8 hours each day. Honestly, I am so grateful for the physical endurance.
