    Traveling from Amsterdam to Montenegro

    July 26, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We woke up early and made our way to the airport four hours early, as Amsterdam’s airport is one of the worst for wait times. We actually got pretty lucky, and even though there were long lines we made it to our gate within two hours! We flew to Dubrovnik, Croatia and got our rental cars. That entailed standing in the parking lot for 45 minutes in the 95 degree heat. But the kids were troopers. We drove a beautiful drive for 2 1/2 hours that I clouded border patrol and the most beautiful ferry ride across the bay. We stopped for lunch in the beautiful old town of Herceg Novi. It was like something out of a storybook. We are at a restaurant overlooking the sea and the views were just stunning. We hit the road again and After stocking up on groceries, we arrived at our villa right after sunset. It was a fifteen minute drive up a windy mountain road with amazing views of the bay. The Villa is absolutely perfect for the 11 of us. It has a two level pool and some great porches. We met the cat that hangs out by the Villa and named him Monty The kids jumped right in the pool and played for a few hours before we all went to bed around midnight. They were amazing travelers.Read more

  • Montenegro day 1

    July 27, 2022 in Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today we all got some much needed sleep. We woke up late and jumped right in the pool. The kids swam forever. We had breakfast Al fresco and then swam more. It was hot out, but the pool was perfect and refreshing. The kids put in a good five hours swimming. Many of us took turns exploring the hike down to the town. We did some more grocery shopping. I just love walking around grocery stores in other countries. I got to use some of the ten words that I know in Montenegrin. A lot of people here don’t really speak English, or they speak very little. I love being in a place that is completely foreign to me! The people here are very kind. And tall! After even more swimming we all hiked down the path (quite steep) to the tiny town of Bigova. Population 101. There are two restaurants and a tiny market by the port. We ate at a super authentic restaurant. Our waiter didn’t speak any English so it was fun to practice our Montenegrin. We have learned that they eat a lot of pasta and meat here. And seafood. Ollie and I got a “burger” that was a giant slab of meat and no bun! We enjoyed our meal and walked by the harbor before climbing back up the hill. I am loving all of the cool plants and birds. I got a treat when we got ready for bed with a good show of lightning and thunder! A great way to end a great day.Read more

  • Montenegro day 2: Budva and the beach

    July 28, 2022 in Montenegro ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

We hit up the pool this morning again and had a yummy breakfast at the villa. We got on the road to drive half hour to Budva, a town that is one of the oldest on the Adriatic Sea. It’s more than 2,000 years old. The drive was once again beautiful with breathtaking views. We have also learned that there are always traffic jams in Montenegro. We went to a great beach in Budva. Many of the beaches here are rocky, and we collected some amazing rocks. We spent four or five hours at the beach. The water was so refreshing and the kids were able to see some fish with their goggles. After the beach, we drove to old town Budva. There were Roman ruins there and an amazing city wall. We walked all the way around on the city wall and saw some beautiful sights and views. The old town is so charming with tiny streets and cute cafes. We found a restaurant tucked away called the secret garden. It was perfect for a quiet dinner after a busy day. We ate pasta and steak and mussels and delicious olives. The girls rode the carousel and then we headed back home. Budva is definitely a new favorite town of mine!Read more

  • Views from our boat tour

    July 29, 2022 in Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We took a three hour not tour around Kotor and Tivat and it was the best thing we have done so far. We learned about the history of Montenegro and got to see how the people here defended themselves through many battles. We got to see submarine tunnels, and went through a blue cave where the sunlight made the water seem to glow bright blue. It was beautiful. So beautiful that I have to make a few separate posts about it. Here are the pics of the scenery. The beautiful backdrop surrounded you 360degrees.Read more

  • Our lady of the rocks island

    July 29, 2022 in Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

One stop on our boat trip was to the island of our lady of the rocks. The legend is that 500 years ago two sailors found a rock sticking out of the water. One of them had a lame leg. They supposedly found a relic there that they brought home with them and the next day the man could walk. They vowed to return to that rock and build an island with a church. They went every day with their boat full of rocks and dumped rocks into the water to build an island. It took a 100 years to build the island and the church. We got to get off on the island and tour the church and it was amazing!Read more

  • Hiking the wall

    July 30, 2022 in Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today some of our group hiked the steep wall in Kotor to the mountain top and I stayed home with the kids. They swam for six hours straight! The hike went well, and they also drove to a cool lookout point afterwards. We cooked fajitas on the grill and enjoyed an evening at the villa.Read more

  • Adult dinner

    July 31, 2022 in Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We enjoyed an adult dinner just down the path from our villa. This restaurant (one of two in the town) is famous for its seafood. We had octopus, calamari, mussels, pasta, shrimp, risotto and more. It was great to enjoy the beautiful sunset right on the water and eat some delicious food!Read more

  • Berlin- day 1

    August 3, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We got to explore beautiful Berlin today! It’s a fabulous city. We saw the old Anhalter Banhoff train station that was used to deport thousands of Jews during the war. It was almost entirely destroyed in the war except for the entrance. We got to visit the Berlin Wall, which was pretty cool. The boys had a curry wurst hot dog, which they loved. We stopped at Checkpoint Charlie, which was an important border checkpoint during the Cold War. We touched out the excessive heat. It’s normally about 75 in Berlin at this time. It was 99! Our apartment had the best little German Pub on our block and we tried some legit German food. And beer!Read more

  • Berlin- and Jud!

    August 4, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today we explored Berlin. We went to a museum at an old bunker that was the history of Hitler’s rise to power. It was super impressionable and interesting. The boys loved it. We are at a doner kabob diner, then got ready to meet up with Jud and David. Jud is our old intern from Spain who lived with us and we miss her so much. We took a river cruise with them and had a delicious Italian dinner in one of their favorite neighborhoods. The people in Berlin are so great. Everyone is laid back and people just gather in parks and on the street to hang out. It has a great vibe. It was a busy and awesome day!Read more

  • Dresden

    August 5, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

This was the day the boys were looking forward to forever. Dresden is a city known for its beautiful architecture and over 90% of the city was destroyed in the war. It’s got lots of great history, and more importantly it has the Military History Museum. This was one of the best museums I have ever been to. The boys had researched it and knew all about it. It was very modern (and air conditioned-a plus). They had hands on parts at each exhibit. For example, one had a cupboard that had a scent machine and when you smelled it, it smelled just like the trenches in the First World War. It was so neat. The boys got to see tanks and planes and boats. It was so fun to listen to their excitement and their knowledge. The museum did a nice job of not glorifying war or weapons, but teaching about the damage that they have caused.Read more

  • Travel plan changes..

    August 6, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Well. We were scheduled to take the train back from Dresden to Berlin, have a few hours to pick up, then leave at 3:00 am for the airport. We got to the train station and as we were waiting, they cancelled our train. We spent a while in line at the customer service counter and got rebooked for an hour later on a new train. That was packed! We killed time by playing Go Fish and the kids loved it. As we were stepping off the train, I got a text that our flight had been cancelled! So we got back to our apartment and spent a few hours trying to get a hold of someone. Eventually got an email that they had rebooked us on a new flight. Hooray! Except that new flight was TWO DAYS LATER! There were legit no other flights before that. We tried. The boys were pretty upset at first, since we had been traveling for 16 days and they were so excited to see their pets. We went to sleep and decided to figure it all out the next day. We ended up finding a hotel across the city, so we packed up and headed there. It was a great hotel. Tiny rooms, but modern and clean with a great free breakfast. We all had better outlooks and attitudes, and took advantage of two extra days in this great city.Read more
