  • Belorado to Villafranca

    6 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

We are off to Villafranca, one of several along the way. Today is a shorter walk, we’ve broken up the longer walks, and reduced our rest days. So far, it’s working well, we are all loving a rest in the afternoon. A windy walk again today and the last half hour the rain came down. We are staying in a lovely hotel, that was once one of the hospices for pilgrims along the way.Baca selengkapnya

  • San Juan de Ortega

    7 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Day 15/40 Only 12k again today into San Juan de Ortega. A nice walk starting a bit tough going uphill then peacefully through a forest. Today we had the most rain we’ve had so far and arrived dripping into a very convivial little cafe crammed with pilgrims sheltering from the rain. A restful afternoon coming up then tomorrow we’re heading into Burgos. Burgos is where we started from last year. We’ve been through a lot already crossing the Pyrenees, doing some long days walking, weaving through the countryside in and out of some small cities. We are getting used to the rythmn of our days. The saying goes the Camino up until here it’s all about the body. The physical body adjusting to the stresses and continual demands of what we’re doing. The next section from Burgos, the biggest impact is on the mind. That is where we will notice most shifts in our mental state. Let’s see how that goes. 😁😅Baca selengkapnya

  • Villa Franca to San Juan de Ortega

    7 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

A little wet and wild today, a steep hill out of Villa Franca which takes us into a lovely Forrest of ancient oak and pine trees. It’s the first time we’ve walked with heavy wind and rain, the earth underfoot softens and attention sharpens. We reach a monument of Spains civil war and those who were executed, a grim reminder of the viciousness of war. As always we are happy to arrive at our destination, a small, hospitable bar seems to accommodate loads of pilgrims all disheveled, and dripping wet, looking for shelter. I’m always amazed how a couple of people serving can be so calm, happy and accommodating of such a diverse collective. Lovely, really lovely. The barista entertains himself and us with a bit of AC/DC, Kiss et al, joy, simply, joyful.Baca selengkapnya

  • Burgos

    8 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Last night was at San Juan de Ortega, a dot of a village with a cathedral a couple of bars and small place we stayed at. Then today started the walk into Burgos, It was very windy and cold and we got drenched. The weather is not looking good for the next couple of days. Apparently the tail end of Hurricane Helene has swept across the Atlantic Ocean down the Irish Coast and into the Bay of Biscay bringing fierce winds with it. Let’s see how we fare with this forecast.Baca selengkapnya

  • San Juan de Ortega to Burgos

    8 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

The day started with a fellow pilgrim letting us know there had been a severe weather warning for wind and rain. At some stage we were walking in wild weather and it was cold. We’ve walked through fields of sun flowers that are finished flowering, they would have been spectacular, I came across one small ray of sunshine today. We saw a tiny car that really could have passed as a large toy. We arrived in Burgos with great excitement to have returned to our starting point of last years Camino. Jem leaves us here in Burgos to make his way home, adios pilgrim.Baca selengkapnya

  • Hornillos del Camino

    9 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Day Something of Forever Oh m gee. We left Jem in Burgos Waaah! 😩 BURGOS was all about the Cathedral. It’s epic. It’s UNESCO listed. It’s in your face stunning. We’ve all got coughs, stocked up at the FARMACIA ready for our walk across the Meseta. It’s a ‘a lot of nothing’ out there, be careful , be careful we were told often. Aborted the walk at the outskirts of Burgos. It’s Wild out there today. 💨💨💨💨💨💨Baca selengkapnya

  • Brogos to Hornillios

    9 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Burgos Cathedral is stunning at anytime, especially at night when it’s all aglow. Weather turned and the heavens opened up. Today we’ve had severe weather warnings for wind up to 100ks. We only made it to the outskirts of Burgos, our legs were nearly being taken out from under us and it didn’t feel good. We cabbed it to Hornillios and we were smug. Jem has gone, we all have a cold. The rest day was welcome.Baca selengkapnya

  • Hornillios to Castrojeriz

    10 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

First stop today we had already walked to the halfway point. Not without mental complaint, it was a long walk on an empty stomach and probably colder than expected. On a high note, it was so good to arrive into a warm cafe and have breakfast. Sometimes this is the highlight of the day, and it’s social too, you reconnect with people you’ve met a couple of days ago as if they are amigos. Or you meet a french man who has walked from his home in the alps, he set out in August, his son is working in Bowen Queensland. I love the randomness of it all (if that’s what it is), and the infinite possibilities of connections with people, with the environment, the nature of it all.Baca selengkapnya

  • Made it to Fromista

    11 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Day 19/40 one of the tougher days. Stunning views in the early part of the day. Did not arrive until 4.30pm to begin the afternoon rituals, magnesium, shower, wash clothes. Lovely to stay in the same hostal as last year. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️Baca selengkapnya

  • Castrojeriz to Fròmista

    11 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

What a great day, fabulous start with a golden sunrise, everything seems so quiet and gentle at this time of day. A very big hill to start with, the view amazing, you can see where you’ve come from and where you’re going. It was a long walk, the last 6 kilometers seemed to be the most challenging. We made it, and all is goodBaca selengkapnya

  • Early start to Carry on with

    12 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Day 20/40 Half way. At Carrion de las Condes now. About 400km to go. Woke very early and knew there was an open cafe nearby so was there by 6.30 am for coffee and croissant. It was dark when I left so I walked with my head torch with another pilgrim til it was light. Arrived at the hostel before rain set in with a quick coffee stop on the way by 11.30. 19km today and big rest afternoon planned ready for 27km tomorrow. It’s pretty flat out here and not a lot to see.Baca selengkapnya

  • Frómista to Carrion

    12 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Walking when tired is possible, keep walking don’t stop until you reach your destination. With threatening weather comes the joy of a rainbow, especially when you realize the whole arc is on show. Grateful, and Michael shows me brilliant yellow flowers, that looks too good to be real, and they are. Only an hour to go, it’s usually the hardest of the day, we were walking towards a storm, an incredible skyline. We missed the storm and all is well. 🙏🏼😌😮‍💨🙏🏼Baca selengkapnya

  • Albergue Los Templarios

    13 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Day 21/40 A glorious day walking today. Left my room at 6.30am and after a coffee and toast hit the road my headlamp on following other pilgrims out of town. They quickly got away from me and I was completely alone. I could barely see them using the phone as a torch in the distance. Then I couldn’t see anything at all. Pitch black out there. No street lights, no sounds. Very misty and foggy and just me clip clopping along with my poles. I turned off my lamp for a minute and I could imagine what it is like to be blind. I had to search for the yellow arrows a couple of times not really sure which direction to go in. I was out there for the pink skies beginning to light up and then the sun rising through the mist. So beautiful. Long long way through what seems like a desert but is just barren wheat fields. Very little services. Kept my breaks to a minimum as I was looking forward to the afternoon recovering in the sun on the front lawn of Albergue Los Templarios that I remember from last year. Very happy to be here. 💃👏👏👏😊Baca selengkapnya

  • Carrion to Terradillos

    13 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Wow, so much space above and below. A stunning day to walk 27 ks the first 17k without any villages to pass through. There was a caravan set up as a bar in the middle of nowhere, or so it seemed. One lovely human, serving pilgrims up a variety of treats. The caravan has comfort for the weary and lures you in with the sound of beautiful Spanish music, it makes you want to move your hips, must be part of the enlivening experience of the Meseta. Just one long stretch that goes on forever, it’s a great feeling to be moving forward, it’s hard to get lost. So much beautiful energy, Sam who we’ve met along the way, tells us that the levels between the earth and the sky are very thin on the Meseta. It’s seems to be true, such a beautiful experience. Happy as always to reach our destination, tired, sore and greatfully accepting all that’s here now.Baca selengkapnya

  • Sahagun for the night

    14 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Day 22/40 Dry,dusty, old forgotten towns amongst ploughed fields ready for planting. An old church and bridge. A great coffee break at Moratinos where we lingered and lingered. After yesterdays 27km day we are tired and glad for the short day today. 12km walked. About 380km to go. 💃🚶‍♀️💃🚶‍♀️💃🚶‍♀️Baca selengkapnya

  • Terradillios to Sahagun

    14 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

It’s quiet or much more quiet than last year, which is nice. We stayed at a large Albergue last night in private rooms, it was great, only a few pilgrims, some who’ve been with us for a week or more. There seems to be a lot of Americans here at the moment escaping the lead up to the November 5 elections. Many will race home to vote, hopeful to be able to make a difference. One lady reminds me of Carol Burnet the comedian in looks and by the sound of her accent, hard to take her seriously, and she has no clue where my imagination has taken me 😆😆 After yesterday’s long walk we are low on energy today, we only had 12 ks to walk and very happy to be in Sahagun.Baca selengkapnya

  • Sahagún to El Burgo Ranero

    15 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Met a nice German pilgrim today, I had seen her a day before, we’d stopped for second breakfast along the way. I heard her say how tired she was, her best attempts to block out the noise from snorers was futile, she hoped for a better night sleep that night. That’s the challenge of staying in Alberges, getting enough rest to walk the following day. We happened to arrive into El Burgos Renero at a similar time, she shared she had first walked the Camino in 2015 and then several times since, including walking from her home in Germany. The first pilgrimage she did changed her life, it was powerful. Now she 37, this pilgrimage is telling her it’s time to set down some roots. We realized we were at the other end of our lives, and the Camino is having its way with us too.Baca selengkapnya

  • Meseta Lost Day

    16 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Day 23/40 possibly? Hard to keep track. Lost in the fog of fatigue. Lost in thought and a long flat walk in a dry landscape. Delighted to find across places remembered from last year’s journey. There’s a lot of familiar faces crossing our path all the time. The most exciting part of the day was the sheep. Relief at reaching our destination each day is palpable. 17km today. Arrived El Burgo Ranero, a pilgrims meal and an afternoon nap which was impossible to wake up from followed. Tired legs. The most fatigue of the whole trip so far. About 340km to go.🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️Baca selengkapnya

  • Mansilla de las Mulas

    16 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Day 24/40. Donkeytown I call it (Mules) Second to last day in the Meseta (dry dusty part of the Camino in central north Spain) with long distances nothing much to see. Today started with 13km with no towns no breaks. Extraordinarily long waiting for a town to appear. Entered some kind of daze, thinking stuff like, oh there’s a field or corn but there’s no cobs in it. Oh, there’s a field of dead sunflowers withering away. Oh that stream trickling sounds nice. There goes a fast train in the distance. Stumbled into a cafe finally at a tiny village in some kind of Camino delirium. Laughing at stupid stuff, so tired words couldn’t come out straight, all a bit funny really. The Meseta has definitely affected our minds. Laughed with Maria all the way to Mansilla for the next 6km. Phew! Another 20km today leaves 320km to go. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🤪Baca selengkapnya

Magic moments on the Maseta, a beautifully long walking meditation, leaves me feeling light, happy and in the presence of wisdom. The weather is mystical, yet it only sprinkles us with rain drops, lots of puddles to negotiate and so much spaces to open into. Happy to arrive into Reliegos for a well deserved break after 13 ks.Baca selengkapnya

  • Leon we Rest

    18 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Day 25. First rest day. 2 nights in the same place. Luxury. The room is ginormous, there’s a lovely view of a park like space. Very nice indeed. Leon is all about the Cathedral for me. Love the windy streets in the old town and the views of the Cathedral as you walk. The old town is surrounded also by high walls which is interesting. Ventured out to visit a physio for a much needed massage again this year. Javier was happy to see us again. Maximising the rest day this afternoon before mass at the Cathedral this evening. Tomorrow we push on to a private room in an albergue and a communal dinner in house.Baca selengkapnya

  • Astorga 😊

    20 Oktober 2024, Spanyol ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Day 28/40 though can’t be sure. Had a couple of days walking since we left Leon. Last night was at Villar de Mazarife. Had albergue accommodation. Felt privileged we weren’t in the communal rooms with the bunk beds and people snoring. It’s survival of the fittest in there. Enjoyed a home cooked communal dinner. Met a few more Camino characters today, Half the table were Aussies. Todays walk was on a long straight road. You wouldn’t say it’s boring but you could say monotonous at times. Sometimes you walk along in a bit of a trance. Sometimes I listen to audiobooks when tired. The mornings are the best time to chat to people. In the afternoons it’s often a bit of an effort making conversation when you’re at the 20k stage of your walk. Astorga is a lovely town. It’s starting to feel like we’re in the home stretch. 2 weeks to go. About 260km left I’d guess. The landscape is starting to get more interesting from here, it’s a little hillier too. Gone are the long flat endless plains. Still seeing familiar faces as we go along which is always nice. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️Baca selengkapnya
