    Georgia Aquarium

    After Raika was done with school, and Annika and Jared could leave work we met at the Georgia Aquarium. The Aquarium is the main highlight for Atlanta tourists. I have mixed feelings when it comes to zoos and aquariums. This aquarium is the only one that has a whale shark tank. And seeing this huge animal just swimming circles reminds me of the typical zoo behavior of some animals just running circles. I just did some research and learned that the whale sharks got caught in Taiwan and delivered by UPS in an airplane to Atlanta. They had 4 whale sharks in total, two of them died in captivity. I think I just saw one yesterday, wondering where the 4th was. I understand the benefits of being able to do better research this way, but it also makes me super sad. They claim to have 70% of their animals out of other aquariums or rescue situations. But the other 30% are caught to be part of this exhibition, like the whale sharks. Flashlights are forbidden and most fishes are constantly moving, so the pictures aren't that great. I try to pick 10 which aren't too bad.

    Nachdem Raika mit der Schule fertig war und Annika und Jared die Arbeit verlassen konnten, trafen wir uns im Georgia Aquarium. Das Aquarium ist das wichtigste Highlight für Touristen in Atlanta. Ich habe gemischte Gefühle, wenn es um Zoos und Aquarien geht. Dieses Aquarium ist das einzige, das ein Walhaibecken hat. Und dieses riesige Tier zu sehen, das einfach nur im Kreis schwimmt, erinnert mich an das typische Zoo-Verhalten einiger Tiere, die einfach nur im Kreis laufen. Ich habe gerade etwas recherchiert und erfahren, dass die Walhaie in Taiwan gefangen und von UPS in einem Flugzeug nach Atlanta geliefert wurden. Sie hatten insgesamt 4 Walhaie, von denen zwei in Gefangenschaft starben. Ich glaube, ich habe gestern nur einen gesehen und frage mich, wo der vierte ist. Ich verstehe die Vorteile, die sich daraus ergeben, dass man auf diese Weise bessere Forschungsergebnisse erzielen kann, aber es macht mich auch sehr traurig. Sie behaupten, dass 70 % ihrer Tiere aus anderen Aquarien oder aus Rettungsaktionen stammen. Aber die anderen 30 % werden gefangen, um Teil dieser Ausstellung zu sein, wie die Walhaie. Blitzlichter sind verboten, und die meisten Fische sind ständig in Bewegung, so dass die Bilder nicht so toll sind. Ich versuche, 10 auszuwählen, die nicht zu schlecht sind.    Okumaya devam et

    Atlanta, GA to Augusta, GA

    On the road again. It's rainy and the clouds are grey. No more hills left and right, the land is mostly flat. Next stop is Augusta, Georgia. I took a break for a quick snack and to tell you a little story. I tried to pay my parking ticket at the parking lot next to the hotel this morning. The machine said 72$, please enter your card. I entered my Credit Card and the machine said it's the wrong card type, please enter a credit card. 🤯 Tried multiple times. I tried my debit card too. Tried to enter the cards in every possible direction. Always the same message. The machine had a help button, but nothing happens when you click it. I walked back to the hotel, asked my way through from one desk to the other till I found the parking lot manager in an office in a different parking lot on the lowest floor. Explained what happened. He checked the entries in the system and said I used the wrong card. 🤯 I showed him my credit card and he got confused. So we walked together back to the same machine. He tried what I tried and figured my card must be damaged or something is wrong with it. I told him that I paid with the same card 2 days earlier at the same machine. Confusion in his face. I asked if I can pay somewhere else or can give him cash. Nope, not possible. His solution: I should drive to the gate, call him, and he'll open the gate for me. Free parking. 🤯 He gave me his name, Ken, and his number. I thanked him multiple times, walked to my car, drove to the gate, called him. He didn't pick up. I called him again and this time the gate opened. I left the parking lot, and with me 3 other cars. After the gate you have to drive up a ramp and then you're kinda already on a highway entry lane. The traffic light was red for me. I saw Ken in the rear mirror, running over the street down to the gate. The traffic light switched to green, so I had to drive. I just saw that Ken tried to call me, while I was driving, but I couldn't pick up. I just hope he's not in too much trouble now. 😅

    Wieder auf der Straße. Es ist regnerisch und die Wolken sind grau. Keine Hügel mehr links und rechts, das Land ist überwiegend flach. Nächster Halt ist Augusta, Georgia. Ich mache eine Pause für einen schnellen Snack und um euch eine kleine Geschichte zu erzählen. Heute Morgen wollte ich mein Parkticket auf dem Parkplatz neben dem Hotel bezahlen. Der Automat sagte: 72$, bitte geben Sie Ihre Karte ein. Ich gab meine Kreditkarte ein und der Automat sagte, es sei der falsche Kartentyp, bitte geben Sie eine Kreditkarte ein. 🤯 Ich habe es mehrere Male versucht. Ich habe es auch mit meiner Debitkarte versucht. Ich habe versucht, die Karten in alle möglichen Richtungen einzugeben. Immer die gleiche Meldung. Der Automat hatte eine Hilfetaste, aber wenn man sie anklickt, passiert nichts. Ich ging zurück zum Hotel, fragte mich von einem Schalter zum anderen durch, bis ich den Parkplatzverwalter in einem Büro auf einem anderen Parkplatz in der untersten Etage fand. Ich erklärte ihm, was passiert war. Er überprüfte die Einträge im System und sagte, ich hätte die falsche Karte benutzt. 🤯 Ich zeigte ihm meine Kreditkarte und er war verwirrt. Also gingen wir gemeinsam zurück zum selben Automaten. Er versuchte, was ich versuchte, und dachte, meine Karte müsse beschädigt sein oder etwas stimme nicht mit ihr. Ich erzählte ihm, dass ich mit derselben Karte 2 Tage zuvor am selben Automaten bezahlt hatte. Verwirrung in seinem Gesicht. Ich fragte, ob ich woanders bezahlen oder ihm Bargeld geben könne. Nein, nicht möglich. Seine Lösung: Ich solle zum Tor fahren, ihn anrufen, und er würde mir das Tor öffnen. Kostenloses Parken. 🤯 Er gab mir seinen Namen, Ken, und seine Nummer. Ich bedankte mich mehrmals bei ihm, ging zu meinem Auto, fuhr zum Tor und rief ihn an. Er nahm nicht ab. Ich rief ihn erneut an, und dieses Mal öffnete sich das Tor. Ich verließ den Parkplatz, und mit mir 3 andere Autos. Nach der Schranke muss man eine Rampe hochfahren und dann ist man quasi schon auf einer Autobahnauffahrtsspur. Die Ampel war für mich rot. Ich sah Ken im Rückspiegel, wie er über die Straße zum Tor hinunterlief. Die Ampel schaltete auf Grün, also musste ich fahren. Ich habe gerade gesehen, dass Ken versucht hat, mich anzurufen, während ich fuhr, aber ich konnte nicht rangehen. Ich hoffe nur, dass er jetzt nicht in allzu großen Schwierigkeiten steckt. 😅    Okumaya devam et

    Augusta Riverwalk

    I was a bit early for the check-in at the hotel and drove to downtown Augusta. I had a marker set for the riverwalk. It was recommended by many travel guides. Google showed around 10 parking places near the riverwalk, but they were all private property and empty. I drove the street up and down 2 times till I saw a hidden parking area behind a construction site. The announced rain and thunderstorms happened an hour before I've been here. The sun was shining, the temperature was around 22°C, a little wind breeze from the river - perfect!

    Ich war ein bisschen zu früh für den Check-in im Hotel und fuhr in die Innenstadt von Augusta. Ich hatte mir eine Markierung für den Riverwalk gesetzt. Er wurde von vielen Reiseführern empfohlen. Google zeigte etwa 10 Parkplätze in der Nähe der Uferpromenade an, aber sie waren alle in Privatbesitz und leer. Ich fuhr die Straße 2 Mal rauf und runter, bis ich einen versteckten Parkplatz hinter einer Baustelle sah. Der angekündigte Regen und das Gewitter kamen eine Stunde bevor ich hier war.     Augusta Highlight: Freedom Bridge

    My highlight in Augusta was the Freedom Bridge. The bridge is closed for traffic. A place for people to chill, enjoy the sun and the breeze. A playground for kids, far away from any traffic right above the river. The only thing missing is a food truck and a public restroom. And maybe public wifi 🤣

    Mein Highlight in Augusta war die Freedom Bridge. Die Brücke ist für den Verkehr gesperrt. Ein Ort, an dem die Leute chillen, die Sonne und die Brise genießen. Ein Spielplatz für Kinder, weit weg von jeglichem Verkehr direkt über dem Fluss. Das Einzige, was fehlt, ist ein Imbisswagen und eine öffentliche Toilette.     Nothing special to say about today's hotel. As always an extremely friendly receptionist. The room is clean and way too big, but that's the smallest they offer. I like the design.

    Augusta, GA to Columbia, SC + Zoo

    Just an one hour drive. Always straight ahead - up the hill, down the hill, up the hill, down the hill. Again perfect weather and I can't believe how lucky I am with that (jinxed). Today I didn't drive directly to the hotel, but to the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. It's a beautiful botanical garden combined with a zoo. Everything looks pretty here. Some cages could be bigger, but the animals all seem to be okay. The staff is huge and you see them everywhere inside and outside the cages. The animals are entertained and the cages are super clean. The garden and zoo are connected by a short trail with a bridge over the saluda river. This zoo is super child friendly and you get food, drinks, and snacks at every corner.

    Nur eine Stunde Fahrt. Immer geradeaus - den Hügel hinauf, den Hügel hinunter, den Hügel hinauf, den Hügel hinunter. Wieder perfektes Wetter und ich kann nicht glauben, wie viel Glück ich damit habe (verhext). Heute bin ich nicht direkt zum Hotel gefahren, sondern zum Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. Das ist ein wunderschöner botanischer Garten kombiniert mit einem Zoo. Hier sieht alles schön aus. Einige Käfige könnten größer sein, aber die Tiere scheinen alle in Ordnung zu sein. Das Personal ist riesig und man sieht es überall innerhalb und außerhalb der Käfige. Die Tiere werden gut unterhalten und die Käfige sind super sauber. Der Garten und der Zoo sind durch einen kurzen Weg mit einer Brücke über den Saluda River verbunden. Der Zoo ist super kinderfreundlich und man bekommt an jeder Ecke Essen, Getränke und Snacks.     This morning I had an alarm set to drive to Charleston in time. I had an online ticket booked for a boat trip to Fort Sumpter. Departure 10:30 AM, be at the dock at 10 AM, and a 2 hour drive. Yawn. The good part about this schedule: empty streets. And again just one highway, always straight ahead, mostly 70 mph as the speed limit. I enjoy that kind of driving. I do have some animal pictures, which I'll add here, cause I have none from the drive. You're welcome.

    Heute Morgen hatte ich einen Wecker gestellt, um rechtzeitig nach Charleston zu fahren. Ich hatte online ein Ticket für eine Bootsfahrt nach Fort Sumpter gebucht. Abfahrt 10:30 Uhr, um 10 Uhr am Dock sein, und eine 2-stündige Fahrt. Gähn. Das Gute an diesem Zeitplan: leere Straßen. Und wieder nur ein Highway, immer geradeaus, meist mit 70 mph als Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung. Ich genieße diese Art zu fahren.     Boat trip

    The boat trip leads from the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, alongside the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, through the harbour of Charleston to the little island with Fort Sumter on it. The weather was super nice. The Atlantic breeze is welcome. We saw many other boats. The view of Charleston is awesome. On the boat is a veteran talking about the forts and the civil war. The ship left the pier at 10:30 and was back at 12:45. We had one hour on the island, so we had 75 minutes on the boat. The veteran said we might get to see dolphins, but sadly we didn't. The first time I saw one was at the Yorktown later today.

Das Wetter war super schön. Die atlantische Brise ist angenehm. Wir haben viele andere Boote gesehen. Die Aussicht auf Charleston ist fantastisch. Auf dem Boot ist ein Veteran, der über die Forts und den Bürgerkrieg spricht. Das Schiff verließ die Anlegestelle um 10:30 Uhr und war um 12:45 Uhr zurück. Wir hatten eine Stunde Zeit auf der Insel, also 75 Minuten auf dem Schiff. Der Veteran sagte, dass wir vielleicht Delfine sehen könnten, aber leider haben wir keine gesehen.     Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter is the place where the civil war started. The fort is built on a little island, which can only be reached by boat. There are 2 park rangers on the island, who give a lot of information about the island, the fort, and the civil war. The view was amazing. I don't know how the weather here is usually at the end of October, but today it was just amazing.

    Fort Sumter ist der Ort, an dem der Bürgerkrieg begann. Das Fort ist auf einer kleinen Insel gebaut, die nur mit dem Boot zu erreichen ist. Auf der Insel gibt es 2 Parkranger, die viele Informationen über die Insel, das Fort und den Bürgerkrieg geben. Die Aussicht war fantastisch.     USS Yorktown & USS Laffey

    At the same pier, where the boat trip started, is the Maritime Museum with the USS Yorktown - an airplane carrier, and the USS Laffey - a destroyer. Both ships were active during and after the 2nd world war and are now a museum. The exhibition is huge and you can spend a whole day on both these ships. Especially the Yorktown is not a good idea for claustrophobic people. There are multiple places, where you have the feeling that you're in combat. Very intense is the new exhibition on the Laffey with the CIC presentation, where you get the feeling you're a crew member of the Laffey during the cold war and a Russian submarine is coming in range. Scary. The Yorktown is impressive just by its huge size. There are 4 tours you can walk and they often start at one side and end after 100s of stairs at a totally different side. I thought I had a good orientation, but I got lost. Without signs I bet people would never find back to daylight.

    An der gleichen Anlegestelle, an der die Bootsfahrt begann, befindet sich das Maritime Museum mit der USS Yorktown - einem Flugzeugträger - und der USS Laffey - einem Zerstörer. Beide Schiffe waren während und nach dem 2. Weltkrieg im Einsatz und sind heute ein Museum. Die Ausstellung ist riesig und man kann einen ganzen Tag auf diesen beiden Schiffen verbringen. Vor allem die Yorktown ist für klaustrophobische Menschen keine gute Idee. Es gibt mehrere Stellen, an denen man das Gefühl hat, sich im Kampf zu befinden. Sehr intensiv ist die neue Ausstellung auf der Laffey mit der CIC-Präsentation, bei der man das Gefühl hat, ein Besatzungsmitglied der Laffey während des Kalten Krieges zu sein und ein russisches U-Boot kommt in Reichweite. Beängstigend. Die Yorktown ist allein schon durch ihre Größe beeindruckend. Es gibt 4 Rundgänge, die man machen kann, und sie beginnen oft an einer Seite und enden nach Hunderten von Treppen an einer ganz anderen Seite. Ich dachte, ich hätte eine gute Orientierung, aber ich habe mich verlaufen. Ich wette, ohne Schilder würden die Leute nie zum Tageslicht zurückfinden.    Okumaya devam et

    Charleston City

    After all the boats I needed some concrete under my feet. I had a few bookmarks set in Charleston and heard a lot of good things about the town. And wow was I surprised by this town. It's a gem. I can't say anything bad about it. I've only 10 pictures, so you've to come here yourself and look at this beauty of a town. King Street, Battery Park, Rainbow Row, Pineapple Fountain - to just name a few highlights.

    Nach all den Booten brauchte ich etwas festen Boden unter den Füßen. Ich hatte ein paar Lesezeichen in Charleston gesetzt und viel Gutes über die Stadt gehört. Und wow, ich war überrascht von dieser Stadt. Sie ist ein Juwel. Ich kann nichts Schlechtes über sie sagen. Ich habe nur 10 Bilder, also müsst ihr selbst herkommen und euch diese schöne Stadt ansehen. King Street, Battery Park, Rainbow Row, Pineapple Fountain - um nur ein paar Highlights zu nennen.     Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA

    Today I didn't get enough sleep. Been awake way too long and my 4 room neighbors decided I had to wake-up at 6 AM. The walls were like paper, and these 4 women had a lot to talk about. And when I finally got back to sleep, the room service person knocked at my door and came in, to check if she could start cleaning already. At 8:30 AM, the check-out time is noon. Weird.

    Heute habe ich nicht genug Schlaf bekommen. Ich war viel zu lange wach und meine 4 Zimmernachbarn beschlossen, dass ich um 6 Uhr morgens aufwachen musste. Die Wände waren wie Papier, und diese 4 Frauen hatten eine Menge zu besprechen. Und als ich endlich wieder einschlief, klopfte der Zimmerservice an meine Tür und kam herein, um zu fragen, ob sie schon mit der Reinigung beginnen könne. Um 8:30 Uhr, die Check-out-Zeit ist 12 Uhr.     Wormsloe State Historic Site

    My first stop was the Wormsloe State Historic Site. I think today I've seen the most pretty avenue of trees that exist. At the entrance gate are a few parking spots for 5 minutes to buy an entrance ticket, then you have to drive thru the whole avenue to the bigger parking lot. At the parking lot is a little shop and a museum. From here you can either go for one of the hikes, which are between 1 mile and 3.2 miles, or to the historic remains and learn about the story behind this place. In my opinion, is the nature more interesting, than the historical part. I saw the cutest crabs ever, and probably over 100 squirrels.

    Mein erster Halt war die Wormsloe State Historic Site. Ich glaube, ich habe heute die schönste Baumallee gesehen, die es gibt. Am Eingangstor gibt es ein paar Parkplätze, wo man 5 Minuten lang eine Eintrittskarte kaufen kann, dann muss man durch die ganze Allee zum größeren Parkplatz fahren. Auf dem Parkplatz gibt es einen kleinen Laden und ein Museum. Von hier aus kann man entweder eine der Wanderungen unternehmen, die zwischen 1 Meile und 3,2 Meilen lang sind, oder die historischen Überreste besichtigen und mehr über die Geschichte dieses Ortes erfahren. Meiner Meinung nach ist die Natur interessanter, als der historische Teil. Ich habe die niedlichsten Krabben aller Zeiten gesehen, und wahrscheinlich über 100 Eichhörnchen.    Okumaya devam et

    Savannah Historical Downtown

    After the hike I drove to the historical downtown of Savannah. The city is a mix out of Charleston and Washington in my opinion. There are green squares with these beautiful trees and a statue at every 3rd to 4th street. The houses are all small and many of them have this white, marble charm of the buildings in Washington. The buildings near the river walkway are interesting, as the city lies way higher than the Savannah river. The houses are connected over many small bridges with the parallel steet. The city is way different than all the others, which makes me happy. I love the variety of everything I saw. This was the last stop before Florida, from now on it will just be palms, sand, and sunshine 😅

    Nach der Wanderung fuhr ich in die historische Innenstadt von Savannah. Die Stadt ist meiner Meinung nach eine Mischung aus Charleston und Washington. Es gibt grüne Plätze mit schönen Bäumen und Statuen an jeder 3. bis 4. Straße. Die Häuser sind alle klein und viele von ihnen haben diesen weißen, marmornen Charme der Gebäude in Washington. Interessant sind die Gebäude in der Nähe der Flusspromenade, da die Stadt viel höher liegt als der Savannah-Fluss. Die Häuser sind über viele kleine Brücken mit der parallel verlaufenden Straße verbunden. Die Stadt ist ganz anders als alle anderen, und das macht mich glücklich. Ich liebe die Vielfalt von allem, was ich gesehen habe. Das war die letzte Station vor Florida, von nun an gibt es nur noch Palmen, Sand und Sonne 😅.    Okumaya devam et

    Another night, another hotel, another Best Western. I get so used to these check-in routines, I might do it at home out of habit for my apartment with one of the neighbors. 🤣

    The night was a complete disaster. The room has a dehumidifier for the first time. It was so loud that I turned it off as soon as I entered the room. There were three stickers on the part:
    1. press on switch to turn on.
    2. use + or - to set to 40.
    3. do not press any of these buttons. Otherwise water will leak out.
    That makes little sense. I fell asleep around 1 o'clock. At 3 o'clock I was woken up by a strange smell. I get out of bed, walk towards the door and suddenly I have wet feet. I turn on the light and see that the carpet around the dehumidifier is wet. So I turn the thing back on, first, to do something about the moisture, and second, because I thought it was my fault. So the thing was running at a volume like a jet plane 2 meters next to my head. Sleeping was out of the question. At 4:30 a.m. I thought it was more important to sleep and turned it off. Thereby I see water drops on the housing. Shortly googled... Water tank is full. The room service forgot to empty the tank. Oh great. So I fumble the tank out, empty it, and sleep for 2 hours more. When I explain this to the gentleman at the front desk during check-out, he sounded as if this happens frequently. After that, I stocked up on fruit and water at Kroger and made my way to Florida.

    Die Nacht war eine Vollkatastrophe. Das Zimmer hat zum ersten Mal einen Luftentfeuchter. Der war so laut, dass ich den beim Betreten des Zimmers direkt ausgemacht habe. Auf dem Teil waren drei Aufkleber:
    1. Einschalter zum Einschalten drücken.
    2. Mit + oder - auf 40 stellen.
    3. Keine dieser Tasten drücken. Sonst läuft Wasser aus.
    Das macht ja schon mal wenig Sinn. Ich bin dann so gegen 1 Uhr eingeschlafen. Um 3 Uhr wurde ich von einem komischen Geruch geweckt. Bin aus dem Bett, laufe Richtung Tür und habe auf einmal nasse Füße. Ich mache das Licht an und sehe, dass der Teppich um den Luftentfeuchter nass ist. Also mache ich das Ding wieder an, um erstens, etwas gegen die Feuchtigkeit zu tun, und zweitens, weil ich dachte, dass ich schuld bin. Also lief das Ding mit einer Lautstärke wie ein Düsenflieger 2 Meter neben meinem Kopf. An schlafen war nicht zu denken. Um 4:30 Uhr habe ich dann gedacht, es ist wichtiger zu schlafen und hab das Ding wieder ausgemacht. Dabei sehe ich Wassertropfen am Gehäuse. Kurz gegoogelt... Wassertank ist voll. Da hat der Zimmerservice vergessen den Tank zu leeren. Na toll. Also fummel ich den Tank raus, mache ihn leer, und schlafe erstmal 2 Stunden mehr. Als ich das beim Auschecken dem Herrn an der Rezeption erkläre, klang er so, als ob das häufiger passiert. Danach habe ich mich dann bei Kroger mit Obst und Wasser eingedeckt und habe mich auf den Weg nach Florida gemacht.    Okumaya devam et

    Little Talbot Island State Park

    Today I needed nature. And my only nature bookmark in Jacksonville was the Little Talbot Island State Park. There is a 4 mile hike, it starts with 2 miles through a forest, which is full of mosquitoes. And I think I marched 2 miles in a new world record. At 88°F, on white beach sand... I honestly loved it. Felt like the performance march during my military service. Once the forest part was over, the beach appeared out of nowhere. Empty. No human left or right. All white sand with mushels. A little paradise. I didn't feel like going into the water with my blisters, but I loved just the sound, the smell, the endless view, the turtles and the seagulls. The 3rd and 4th mile took forever, cause of this wonderful nature.

    Heute brauchte ich die Natur. Und mein einziges Natur-Lesezeichen in Jacksonville war der Little Talbot Island State Park. Dort gibt es eine 4-Meilen-Wanderung, die mit 2 Meilen durch einen Wald beginnt, der voll von Moskitos ist. Und ich glaube, ich bin 2 Meilen in einem neuen Weltrekord gelaufen. Bei 88°F, auf weißem Strandsand... Ich habe es ehrlich gesagt geliebt. Es fühlte sich an wie der Leistungsmarsch während meines Militärdienstes. Als der Waldteil vorbei war, tauchte wie aus dem Nichts der Strand auf. Vollkommen leer. Kein Mensch links oder rechts. Nur weißer Sand mit Muscheln. Ein kleines Paradies. Ich hatte keine Lust, mit meinen Blasen ins Wasser zu gehen, aber ich liebte einfach das Geräusch, den Geruch, die endlose Aussicht, die Schildkröten und die Möwen. Die 3. und 4. Meile dauerte ewig, wegen dieser wunderbaren Natur.    Okumaya devam et

    After the beach visit, I was full of sand, stung, and tired from the short night. So I went straight to the hotel and decided not to look at Jacksonville further. One of the nicer rooms, and also the last in which I sleep alone, because from tomorrow on we will travel as three for the rest of the trip.

    Nach dem Strandbesuch war ich voller Sand, zerstochen, und müde von der kurzen Nacht. Also bin ich direkt zum Hotel gefahren und habe entschieden mir Jacksonville nicht weiter anzugucken. Eines der schöneren Zimmer, und auch das letzte in dem ich alleine schlafe, weil ab morgen geht es den Rest der Reise zu dritt weiter.    Okumaya devam et

    The plan was to slowly wake-up, pack, and then drive to Karl and my mom. They arrived the night before in the USA super late after many flight delays and didn't have much sleep, nor any time to prepare their home for themselves or a visitor. So Karl called and asked me, if I can spend some time alone today and recommended visiting St. Augustine. My plan was anyway to drive down the A1A, a road right at the beach, and St. Augustine is one of the towns the road leads through. I recorded a lot of the way with my GoPro and hopefully I can at some point take some pictures out of it, but for now is this post just a placeholder and a recommendation for everyone: drive the A1A, if you're here.

    Der Plan war, langsam aufzuwachen, zu packen und dann zu Karl und meiner Mutter zu fahren. Sie kamen in der Nacht zuvor nach vielen Flugverspätungen super spät in den USA an und hatten weder viel Schlaf, noch Zeit, ihr Haus für sich oder einen Besucher vorzubereiten. Karl rief mich also an und fragte, ob ich heute etwas Zeit alleine verbringen könne und schlug vor, St. Augustine zu besuchen. Mein Plan war ohnehin, die A1A entlangzufahren, eine Straße direkt am Strand, und St. Augustine ist eine der Städte, durch die die Straße führt. Ich habe einen Großteil der Strecke mit meiner GoPro aufgenommen und kann hoffentlich irgendwann ein paar Bilder davon machen, aber für den Moment ist dieser Beitrag nur ein Platzhalter und eine Empfehlung für alle: Fahrt die A1A, wenn ihr hier seid.     St. Augustine

    The moment I reached St. Augustine I realized two things. First, it's a really touristic town - sightseeing trains on the road, many parking lots, multiple little stands with free maps, and public restrooms. Second, this town is built by spanish colonists - the houses do look so different, it's like being in Palma de Mallorca. In this city you'll find the oldest public space built by colonists and the oldest masonry fortress in the continental US. The city was founded in 1565 and is today known as america's oldest seaport with a historical seawall. It's a beautiful city and has everything a tourist needs to be happy for a day or two. Karl told me they have to return a rental car at the Sanford Airport and want to meet for dinner after. So I had to leave around 3 PM, as I planned to follow the A1A south as far as possible and that means an average speed of 25 miles.

    In dem Moment, als ich St. Augustine erreichte, wurden mir zwei Dinge klar. Erstens ist es eine sehr touristische Stadt - Sightseeing-Züge auf der Straße, viele Parkplätze, mehrere kleine Stände mit kostenlosen Karten und öffentliche Toiletten. Zweitens ist diese Stadt von spanischen Kolonisten erbaut worden - die Häuser sehen so anders aus, dass man sich wie in Palma de Mallorca fühlt. In dieser Stadt finden Sie den ältesten von Kolonisten erbauten öffentlichen Raum und die älteste gemauerte Festung auf dem amerikanischen Festland. Die Stadt wurde 1565 gegründet und ist heute als älteste Hafenstadt Amerikas mit einer historischen Uferpromenade bekannt. Die Stadt ist wunderschön und bietet alles, was ein Tourist braucht, um einen oder zwei Tage lang glücklich zu sein. Karl erzählte mir, dass sie ein Mietauto am Flughafen Sanford zurückgeben müssen und sich danach zum Abendessen treffen wollen. Ich musste also gegen 15 Uhr aufbrechen, da ich vorhatte, der A1A so weit wie möglich nach Süden zu folgen, und das bedeutet eine Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 25 Meilen.    Okumaya devam et
