    Arrival in Belize City

    March 6 in Belize ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

After a full day of travel (a 3 hour delay in Toronto and the wings de-iced) we arrived in Belize around 4:00pm and made our way to our hotel and then to a restaurant on the waters edge. An outdoor meal sure felt good. It was 28 degrees with a beautiful breeze.Read more

  • Exploring Belize City

    March 7 in Belize ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

We walked 10kms today exploring the city and getting acclimatized while we waited to meet up with our group at 6pm. Everyone here is friendly and relaxed. The real action is about to start tomorrow when we head inland. On our walk near the sea wall, we stumbled upon a manatee fish, also known as a sea cow, in the water. Unfortunately he was not alive. They have elephant like skin and resemble a walrus without the tusks.Read more

  • Belize City to Flores, Guatemala

    March 8 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Today we added a little more ink to our passport by crossing into Guatemala and heading to Flores. It was a full travel day in which we rode in a chicken bus for 2.5 hours with the locals, and our pet cockroach, through a myriad of small towns to reach the border. We then boarded a private vehicle to reach the small island of Peten, just outside Flores where we will spend the next two nights. No complaints from us as I loved to see the countryside and despite potholes, road construction and stopping to eat, we reached our final destination in 8 hours. We enjoyed a delicious lunch under a thatched hut where we were served tamarind juice, homemade vegetable soup, chicken fajitas and fresh fruit. Tomorrow we will explore Tikal. We are already fast friends with our 14 fellow travellers and our guide Kike.Read more

  • Tikal Ruins Guided Tour

    March 9 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

We spent a memorable morning walking through history at the impressive site of Tikal. The Mayan site is set in the heart of the jungle, in Tikal National Park, home to over 200 species of trees as well as temples, plazas, carved stone monuments and public squares. There are more than 3000 buildings in all, dating as far back as 600 BC. This magnificent tropical rain forest is home to spider monkeys, jaguars, holler monkeys, toucans, quetzals, eagles, macaws, anteaters and armadillos. Although we did not see this jaguar, our guide saw it the previous time he visited and shared his video. Episode four of Star Wars was filmed here, making it much more famous to the general public. We enjoyed a free afternoon and devoured some delicious tacos and sipped on a Jamaican Rose at a waterfront restaurant, where we watched the sun go down.Read more

  • San Ignacio

    March 10 in Belize ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the water’s edge and then spent the next 4 hours travelling back across the border into Belize and reaching our destination of San Ignacio. We received a briefing on the activities available for tomorrow in this picturesque region, took a walk into town to visit the Mennonite Market and savour some homemade ice cream which was also prepared by the mennonites, before relaxing at the pool until dinner time. Weather hovers around 28 degrees and we are enjoying a nice breeze. I captured some of the artwork as it speaks to the culture here. This little owl peaked out at us at dinner.Read more

  • Cave Tubing

    March 11 in Belize ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After a short hike through the beautiful jungle, we spent an exhilarating day cave tubing. This was a new experience for us and we had a blast. We had a chance to swim in the cool clear water, jump off a cliff, go under a waterfall and wade through a low narrow section to feel the real experience of caving. At times we floated down the river solo in our tubes and for other sections we were all looped together, braving the rapids as a single unit. We saw a lot of unique and stunning formations on the cave walls and ceiling, including lots of bat holes. At the end of it all we shared a delicious lunch of stewed chicken, rice, beans, coleslaw and fried plantains along with a drink of hibiscus juice. It doesn’t get more typical than that!Read more

  • Caye Caulker

    March 12 in Belize ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We left San Ignacio this morning and traveled by chicken bus with the locals back to Belize City where we caught a water taxi to the tiny island of Caye Caulker. Once we checked in to our beach hotel we took a “bike with purpose” tour of the island, supporting some local teens who are raising funds for their education. We visited their school, their soccer pitch, the site of an ancient ‘Giant Cave’ and the location where the island was split by hurricane Hattie. The cave, located directly beneath the island, is believed by some to be the largest in the world and is known for extreme, advanced only technical diving, It features deep dark tunnels, 25 foot stalactites and ancient Mayan artifacts, such as a large clay pot. In the evening we treated ourselves to a delicious meal under the stars at the Pelican restaurant. “Go slow” is the island vibe here.Read more

  • An Un-Belizeable Day Of Snorkelling

    March 13 in Belize ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Today we dove into a new day with Ragga Sailing Adventures, exploring three memorable snorkelling spots in the crystal waters of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.- Coral Gardens, Shark and Ray Alley, and Tarpon View. This 5 hour excursion was a totally un-Belizeable experience, one that will stand out for a long time. The guides snorkelled alongside us in small groups pointing out where to see the large variety of marine life and giving us the names to go with all of our discoveries. On top of that they fed us a delicious lunch, two yummy snacks and poured us some celebratory golden rum punch once we were on our way back to Caye Caulker. It was an hour long trip so some folks were mighty happy disembarking. Our Captain even blew a conch shell to put icing on the cake. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere full of vibrant coral formations and marine life such as sea turtles, nurse sharks, manatees, a variety of rays, barracudas and a collection of colourful fish species, all of which we witnessed today. As always here on the island, the sunset was spectacular as we witnessed from our dinner on the rooftop of Elba’s Little Kitchen where we ate conch fritters and seasoned red snapper filets.Read more

  • Exploring Caye Caulker

    March 14 in Belize ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We rented bicycles today and explored the North and South islands of Caye Caulker. There are only three modes of transportation on this small island, walking , cycling or driving a golf cart. A ferry takes all three and is the required transportation if you wish to cross the channel between the North and South sides. The North island is just beginning to be developed and we scoped out Bliss Beach which is aptly named. It was a nice relaxing day with a mani and pedicure, lunch on the beach, a stroll on the beach path and a swim at the pool. A delicious way to wind down this little winter getaway. Tonight we will gather for a farewell supper. Lucky us, we have one more day. I hear Bliss Beach calling.Read more

  • Bliss Beach

    March 15 in Belize ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

We discovered a water taxi service from the Split to Bliss Beach and were the first on site when it opened at eleven. The first order of business was scoring a private cabana to secure some shade and then we were able to enjoy an afternoon of reading, taking in the views and lounging in the warm ocean in the hammocks at the beach. This little slice of heaven is really growing on us.Read more
