Such and informative but engaging tour, the boys learnt so much. They were so eager to get here and kept asking when we could leave Shell Beach to go to the Aquarium, they are obsessed with sharks.

I was especially proud of Lachlan who at each point in the tour when given the opportunity to ask a question asked the tour guide a question. This showed me that he was listening to the information, processing it and thinking about what else he wanted to know and even more he was confident enough in a group that contained strangers to speak up and ask his questions on his own without any help from either Brett or I. That really is a big accomplishment for him.

Lyla loved the aquarium as well she was so excited by all the different sea creatures she could stop not talking, she is at that age where she does not stop asking questions. She is so inquisitive. Her favourite was the Nemo tank. It took her a while to realise we could all see her through the other side of the tank, her expressions were hysterical. I love the innocence of children of not knowing or caring (😂😂) about what is happing around them. As the tour guide spoke Lyla continued to call out from behind the fish tank ( we were all on the other side of the tank) about the nemo fish
and smoosh her face against the tank. Kat and I could not control our laughter.

The last pool was what the boys were waiting for, shark feeding! They got to see a few different sharks, but the Tiger shark was the one which came up and ate the fish at our feeding and the boys were stocked.

The boys used the rest of their Easter money to buy themselves a special shark cuddly toy.

  • Shell Beach - Shark Bay

    May 13, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This has been on my bucket list, a beach with no sand, a beach made entirely of shells! Well, we finally made it there and it was great.

The beach is made up of billions upon billions of tiny cockle shells. There is only two beaches like this in the world ( apparently). The cockle can survive here due to the very high salt content of the water produced by the stromatolites near by, but their predators can not, producing the high shell content on the beach.

I went prepared with a zip lock bag to collect my shells. A bit later on Lyla pulls my bag of shells out of the beach bag and asks me “what is this?” I told her it was a secret and to put them back in, as you are not meant to take shells from the beach! Lyla then starts in a not so quite voice saying “but you can’t take those there is a sign, there is a sign over there on the way in that says don’t take the shells” 😂😂 thanks Aunty Kat for reading her that sign on the way in. Lyla then kept collecting shells and telling me they were secret shells for my bag, at least she was whispering now.

  • Peron Homestead - Denham Shark Bay

    May 13, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

What a way to finish a massive day, nibbles champagne and a soak in a artesian hot tub!

  • Denham Fishing with Pete

    May 14, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The day started early, 7 am at the ramp. The wind was light so we headed to the weed beds and jigged up some fresh squid. After an hour or so we had seven or eight squid but by then the wind had increased. We started to head out for a fish but with the wind blowing we couldn’t go far. All we were catching was shit fish and the wind was howling, Pete pleaded to head for the shallows to chase small Whiting, but against his wishes we headed out into the rough.
The water was rough with big boat wash a worry, but after a short drift we found some ground and anchored. The wind died and we started to catch plenty of fish with big Bates attracting the bigger blue line Emperor aka Black snapper. We bagged out on black snapper. Pete caught his first shark and also seen his first sea snake which was about 5 foot long and 50mm thick, we were all nervous as the curious snake looked like it was trying to get in the boat. With no wind and full sun, we were feeling parched, but Shaun Was keen to catch a bigger shark.
We drove out another couple of k’s and the breeze gave us a second lease of energy. we set a live foot long Pike on a balloon and it wasn’t long before the balloon disappeared. After 10 minutes we had Bruce the big 5-6 foot bronzy at the boat. Another sea snake then appeared before the shark proceeded to thrash against the boat, Pete’s anxiety had reached new heights lol. The shark was released and it was time for beers, so we headed for the ramp.
After Pete bought a case of beer we jumped in the boat and floated around while cleaning the squid and filleting the fish. We finished it off with a beautiful sunset while drinking beer on the boat.
Once the boat was back at camp, it was Pete’s choice for dinner, fresh black snapper or the pub? He chose the pub. More than a couple of pints were drunk and we had a beautiful big feed. Pete couldn’t stop saying how much fun he had had.
    WHAT A DAY DENHAM!

  • Glow Party

    May 15, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Tonight as part of the Fishing Fiesta in Denham they were having a Glow Party Disco for the kids. Kat and I decided we would take the kids.

As per usual Kenny style Brett, Shaun and the kids had been out fishing in the boat so we were running late. Kat and I decided we would take the kids and meet Brett and Shaun down there.

By the time we got there the only glow option left was the PAINT🙄! So on went the glow paint then the kids went in for a dance. The paint went everywhere, somehow I ended up wearing a lot of it too! But the kids had a ball which is what we were there for. Eventually, Brett and Shaun made it down too, by this time most of the other families had left and it was only our kids dancing, so it was about time to head back (I think they had planned it this way 😂😂).

  • Shark Fishing with the Kids

    May 15, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

See ya Pete! We loved catching up and it definitely felt like something was missing after you left. Till next time 🤙
After a quick trip to the airport we sampled some of the catch from the day before, BLACK SNAPPER cook up with fresh salt and pepper squid. We were told black snapper tastes better than pink by a couple of different people and they were right, it was amazing. We won’t be battering it next time, I m thinking fried in a buttery pan with garlic and chives...... yum!
I want to catch a shark! I want to catch a shark! The boys said over and over, so you guessed it, we went shark fishing in shark bay. The boat was packed and we headed to the squid ground. We had a triple hookup on some monster squid with our first casts. Brett being the designated line rigger also had netting duty and got covered in squid ink.......... I mean blasted by one monster squid head to toe. More squid were hooked, then Lachie hooked a screamer that turned out to be a BLACK SNAPPER, it had engulfed the whole squid jig, he did well to get it in cause they pull like a horse.
Out to our favourite fishing hole we travelled and down went the baits, we have learnt not to burley out here cause the sharks that result are massive and not what the boys could handle. After 20 minutes of catching black snapper and pike, Brax was on, it was peeling line and diving under and around the boat in every direction but finally on a very light rod he brought up a 2-3 foot shark. He couldn’t believe how hard they fight!
Now the sharks were in town, we rigged Lachie up on a heavy rod and sent the bait down. Not too long and his reel was singing. After another impressive fight we had a second shark in the boat. This one had swallowed the hook and we decided to keep it much to the boys delight.
I had wanted to try catching and eating shark for a while now and have done some research on how they must be prepared. They must be bled immediately to remove any mercury or heavy metals before they have the chance to enter the meat. Secondly, sharks do not wee so their urea is excreted through their skin and hence gutting them immediately also reduces excess urea entering the meat. Now any urea present in the meat turns to ammonia and can make it smell, different shark species have differing levels of urea in their flesh but it can be treated to remove any impurities. After filleting I soaked the meat in an ice bath for 4-5 hours which really firmed up the meat followed by an hour soaked in milk and lemon juice in the fridge. The result was great, firm, white, beautiful looking fillets with no odour what so ever, not even a fishy odour.
Our neighbours had very kindly given us a couple of cray earlier in the day. The bbq was started, and the Cray tails cooked with butter, oil, shallotte’s, sun-dried tomatoes and garlic. Salt, pepper, lemon, sweet and sour sauce was added before they were turned. LOOK AT THOSE SHARK FILLETS! They were cooked with the same sauces. The shark was amazing, and everyone had a taste and couldn’t believe how good it was, it was a firm texture and had soaked all the flavour in, I even found my fork drifting to the shark over the cray....... “IT WAS DELICIOUS”
Shark is definitely going to be on the menu again!

  • Steep Point - Day 1

    May 17, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

So we decided to ditch the vans for a few nights and sleep out in some miniature tents 😂😂 while we explored Steep Point the most westerly point in Australia.

The first night we had a camp booked at False Entrance, it took 3.5hours from our caravan park to get there, half of that was along a 4WD track. As soon as we pulled up the boys couldn’t wait to get a line in the water. Steep point is renowned for its land based fishing. Unfortunately, the only thing caught that arvo was a Long Tom, meanwhile Kat, Cassie, the kids and I sat sweltering in the heat on the cliff top entertaining the kids.

Us ladies were hanging for a swim, we finally got to drive along the beach and found a beautiful spot to pull up when we came across a car that was severely bogged! There went our swim! The boys of course were more than happy to help and got the winch out. Us girls left them to it and walked down the beach were we did find some beautiful shells.

  • Steep Point - Day 2

    May 18, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

This morning, Brett and Shaun went for a fish with the boys who they helped get unbogged yesterday. Whilst there, they found out that there was another way to drive up to the tip. We could all feel a ‘Brett's Adventure’ coming on. We decided to take the coastal cliff drive to Steep Point, rather than the main road up the middle.

It was such a great drive, we got to see so many amazing things along the drive. As Shaun pulled into the first bay, he was on the radio as right on the shore was a school of sharks. The boys threw a line in but had no luck.

In the next bay, there was lots of fossils to look, as well as bones and shells making up the layers of the rocks.

Thunder Bay blow holes were scary, we were worried we may lose a child down them, only one was blowing, but the rumbling and hissing that was coming from under the rocks was like nothing we have ever heard before.

Then, we followed the sea cliffs right up to Steep Point where the boys threw a line in and started to catch some Blue Line Emperor.

We were lucky enough to score a camp spot right on the cliffs at Steep Point and woke up with water views.

  • Steep Point - Day 3

    May 19, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Kat and I had been hanging to get to Shelter Bay and what a day. We got there and could not believe our eyes it was just stunning. The water was crystal clear and such beautiful shades of blue.

Kat, the kids and I combed the beach for shells and then Brax nagged Brett to get a rod down. Brett was not keen as he had packed all the gear up, but Brax would not let up, so Brett got him one. No sooner then Brax had his line in the water, he had caught a flathead. It felt like every cast he caught a fish and they just kept getting bigger. Of course then Lachlan wanted a turn, first cast he was on too. Uncle Shaun had been sitting in the chair holding a sleeping Byron, but when he saw the kids catching fish after fish he couldn’t contain himself, he dumped Bryon in his car seat and grabbed his rod! It was hysterical, Brax would not let Uncle Shaun use his soft plastics so uncle Shaun had to use a different type and it took him a bit longer to get onto the fish, but he got there in the end.

We left Shelter bay with an esky full of Blue Line Emperor and Flathead, what a fun filled couple of days, I am not going to miss the tent though!

  • Steep Point - Day 3 part 2

    May 19, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The drive home along the inland road was horrific! It was so corrugated. We stopped and aired up on the tar and then found out that it was a tarred section on the dirt road and there was still more dirt 😩! To say we were devastated was an understatement, we finally made it to the tar and we all sighed with relief.

But I would do it all again in a heart beat to see the boys faces as they pulled in fish after fish all on their own at Shelter Bay.

  • Date Night - Monkey Mia

    May 22, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

When we left on our trip around Aus with Kat and Shaun we though you beauty baby sitters 😂😂 we can have date nights all the time. Well mine and Kat’s birthday came and went and we both missed out on date nights. Then our anniversary came and went and no date night once again! Shaun and Kat’s anniversary came and went and no date night for them either. These date nights were proving harder than we first had thought.

We did a day trip to Monkey Mia and we all loved it and decided to book a few days here, it had a resort feel to it plus it had a restaurant in the caravan park! Date night was on! As soon as the caravans were set up Kat and I went straight over and booked the restaurant for our date nights and do you know what the boys said “ we will have to check the winds, it might be good for fishing” 🙄!

Brett cut it fine arriving back from fishing at 6.10pm then having to have a quick shower before briskly walking to the restaurant for our first kid free dinner of the trip! Which I was then hassled for inhaling, but I was starving.
It was nice having a night off cooking and chatting without the kids listening in for a change.

  • Rainy Day - Monkey Mia

    May 23, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

    Rainy days are for:

    - Extra long snuggles in bed with the kids
    - looking at photos and videos of what we have done on our lap so far ( and we have done so much in just 5 months).
    - pancakes for breakfast
    - playing ping pong
    - getting out the play dough
    - baking cookies
    - making banana bread
    - eating cookies and banana bread
    - watching movies and of course
    - playing uno

And if you are Brett and Shaun it consists of chasing big cod out in the boat!

Whilst at the games room having some time out of the caravans Byron had the whole room to crawl around, it was a massive room with two ping pong tables, couches and multiple tables and chairs, but after and hour or so of chasing him away from the door Kat said “ that’s it! I give up” and we all let him go outside in the rain and play in the puddle he had been trying so desperately to get to for the last hour or so and it made his little day!

Rainy days are quite exhausting 😂

  • Carnarvon

    May 26, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Took the Fruit Loop trail and picked up some fresh fruit and veggies from local farms at Carnarvon, yum yum.

We were on the hunt for mangoes, we could see mango trees everywhere. We finally found a place with a sign, walked up the massive driveway in the stinking hot heat to find out they were frozen mangoes 😩. For some reason all the farmers in Carnarvon sell their mangoes in frozen packs? Oh well, frozen mango for us it was. The kids were excited as apparently Kat makes a mean smoothly that includes mango.

Along the trail is a cactus garden that has become Insta famous, so we stopped there for a look and a photo of course. The kids loved it they kept talking about the time Lachlan touched the ‘mother in laws cushion’ at Aunty Karen’s house and then started to cry because it was spiky 😂. Lachlan didn’t touch it this time!

  • Gnaraloo - Three Mile Camp

    May 28, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We made the decision to drag the vans out to Gnaraloo Station, 77kms and 3.5 hours later we made it!

We went to check in and suss out our sites, we knew we were in the overflow but once we saw it we were mortified. We had been told it was nice and spacious but it was a hot jam packed dust bowl! I was ready to turn around and drive the 3.5 hours back out 😂. Lucky we were able to pick up some beach front sites for a few nights instead, so we took those. We might have to do some site hoping, but it will be worth it to stay out of that dust bowl overflow they call ‘The Ridge’.

The weather took a turn the night we arrived and it poured most of the following day, but we had blowholes right at the back of the caravan, they were awesome!

  • Gnaraloo Bay - Snorkelling

    May 28, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We wanted to make the most of the good weather, as they have been predicting rain and storms for the next few days so we packed the stuff and headed to Gnaraloo Bay.

Our first snorkel of the Coral Coast did not disappoint, there were fish everywhere and the different coloured coral was amazing. It was the perfect spot to take the kids as we didn’t have to go far out and once you walked up the beach you could just drift back down in the current not even having to swim, then get back out walk up the beach and do it all over again. Which we did, over and over each time see new and different things.Read more

  • Gnaraloo Bay Fishing

    June 2, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

The boys, bringing home the goods again 👌

Brett and Shaun decided to put the boat in at Gnaraloo Bay and leave it tied up there while we were here.

The first arvo they dropped it in and went for a fish they forgot their phones, so they were unable to check what types of fish they were catching and bag and size limits. When they got home we found out the had caught a coral trout and let it go! Kat and I were devastated. They said they had got three and not to worry they will get more next time. Well they didn’t, but they got some ripper spangled emporia, and they were delicious.Read more

  • Gnaraloo Lagoon - Snorkelling

    June 3, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

It’s cloudy, windy and cold, but we put on our wetsuits and went snorkelling at Gnaraloo Lagoon. It was worth it, the fish in the lagoon were huge and so colourful. The kids were right the water was like a bath, just a pity the wind blowing on you when you got out made it sooooooo cold 🥶.Read more

  • Gnaraloo - Tombstones Snorkelling

    June 4, 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The sun finally came out and the wind died off so we were keen to get some more snorkeling done. The kids, Kat and I were keen to see some turtles as our neighbours had told us they saw turtles when they went out.

We were in luck, as soon as we were in the water we spotted a turtle 🐢😁🤗. He was a friendly little fellow who was happy to swim around with us and let us pat him. We were all stocked.

Once everyone got out Kat and I decided to go back and for another go. We were mesmerised by a school of thousands of fish that were swimming around when Kat stopped me to see if I saw the SHARK 🦈! I hadn’t but had been thinking that all these fish must be attracting a shark. The next thing we knew more sharks had come in and were circling around Kat and I, there was at least 4 or 5 now! Before I had a chance to realise what was happening Kat had swam in and left me. I turned the Go pro off and high tailed it in.

It didn’t turn me off going back out, half an hour later I saw turtle heads popping up out of the water, so I popped my wetsuit back on and went out again to find another turtle 🐢. ( with Brett as back up this time😆).

  • Red Bluff

    June 5, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Everyone said the road into Red Bluff was terrible and that they would not take their vans down there. On the way out of Gnaraloo we stopped at the Red Bluff sign and it said 5kms, so we thought LETS DO IT and off we went, not even 10 min later we pulled up at an awesome spot, we were glad once again we did not listen to what other people had to say.

It was our lucky day we scored prime spots with water front views and only a short walk to the beach.

The kids were keen to hit up the shore dumpers, so we got set up and down we went, the first wave Brax comes running back barely wet shouting “shark, shark, there was a shark in the wave right at the edge of the water”. We tried to tell him is was a rock or a mantra ray, but then after watching for a while we all realised he was right and it was in fact sharks. The kids then decided to play in the sand 😆.
