  • Morning walks - Cactus

    29 Nisan 2023, Avustralya

It has been a bit windy the last 2 days, but it has given the kids some down time after non- stop playing for two weeks while all there friends were here.

After catching up on sleep and school work, we put on our jumpers and got out for a walk.

We found a cool cave to explore and found what the wind and swell had washed up for us.

  • Cactus - collections

    29 Nisan 2023, Avustralya

There is always time to get a few things done while we are at Cactus. So I got to spend a few days cleaning up the geodes we had collected, cracking olivine rocks, looking for gems, doing some shell collecting and shell restoration. Three of my favourite things.Okumaya devam et

  • Coober Pedy

    5 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This year, our experience at Coober Pedy was a bit different. Instead of the torrential rain, freezing cold temps and howling winds we got a stunning cloudless sky and a nice hot day.

We decided to find a spot to park the van and walk around town, we checked out some of the old sites and some new ones. While you are in Coober Pedy you can’t go pass an Underground Mine and house tour. This year, we opted for a self-guided one. The boys thoroughly enjoyed following the map through all the twisting and turning underground tunnels and reading all the information at the different stopping points. Brett and I enjoyed the noodling pits 🤣.Okumaya devam et

  • Train Spotter Camp

    5 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Train Spotter camp.

It stated on Wiki 'situated on the Ghan railway, sit back and watch the trains go by'

    Sounded great.

We pulled in, set up, then raced up and put our coins on the railway track ready! Sat back and waited for the trains by our fire.

It was a very peaceful night, no trains 🤣. Oh well, better luck next time. A few disappointed kids in the wee hours of the morning when they went up the collect their coins

  • Standley Chasm

    7 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Standley Chasm is in the West MacDonnell Ranges, last year we didn’t make it out here, so we thought we would go for a drive and check out some of the sites this year.

The kids were not to keen on going for a drive as we have been doing a lot of driving the last few days, since we left Cactus. So we just picked the two closest gorges and went and checked them out. The kids agreed to this, it made them even happier when they found out the walks were extremely short 🤣.

We got to Stanley Chasm at midday so the sun was shining into the chasm and lighting it up, it was beautiful, but we are not sure it was worth the $30 entry fee.

  • Alice Springs

    8 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya

An eerie silence in the town of Alice Springs this year. I guess all the negative media, has had an impact on tourism this year.

As we drove through town, the caravan parks were empty, this time last year they were busting at their seems. We easily pulled up and grabbed a parking spot to do our shopping, last year this was a struggle. This year, plenty of stock on the shelves.

We stayed at the show grounds again this year, we were 1 of 5 vans! Last year, vans came and went daily, this year it was so quite, with only 1 or 2 coming and going in the 3 days we were there. Such a great place to stay.

New alcohol restrictions in place too, no alcohol sold on Mondays and Tuesdays and only 2 bottle shops in town open on a Sunday. Brett was lucky a fellow camper mentioned it or he would have been having a dry week or two 🤣.

We didn’t experience or see any trouble while we were there only good times.

And in Brett style he and the boys climbed a mountain. I skipped this one as I had a headache.

  • So many pretties 😍

    11 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After three weeks of surfing, I got to have three days of fossicking 🤔

I made the most of it and everyone got into it, well the kids did half days and then got over it, but at least they gave it a go. Not everyone can be addicted like me.

This year, we were at the fields a bit earlier than last year and there had been a lot of rain recently, we found that a lot of the dirt piles had been washed and it made it really easy to see any zircons that previous fossickers had missed. We spent most of our time walking the fields and picking up zircons that people has missed in their digging tailings.

I have to say that, we did much better specking then we did digging, so we concentrated our efforts on specking. We found some beauties and were very happy with our efforts.

We ran into Steve and Dawn who we meet twice last year, once in Alice Springs and again at Mary Kathleen. They are just the nicest and most helpful people who also have a passion for fossicking ( and the most amazing gem collection). Steve took us up to a spot where he likes to speck and we found a few nice gems up in the old diggings. Then we visited Dawn at the van to check out some of her new jewelry pieces 😍.

Then unfortunately, it was time to move on, like usual I could stay longer, but other places to go ( and fossick 😉)!

  • Playing Marbles

    12 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya

We loved our visit to the marbles last year, so we booked in again this year.

Walking around the boulders at sunset and sunrise is just magical. The colours in the sky and the way the rocks change colour is just spectacular.

Last year, it was packed the place was booked out, this year spots everywhere and it was easy to get a booking 🤷🏼‍♀️.

We went back to our favourite marble and took a comparison shot and explored some new ones. The boys were loving it this year as they had bikes, so they could tare around the track.

  • Tennant Creek Cup

    13 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

We were planning a quick stop at Tennant Creek for breakfast and a loaf of bread. Brett and I missed the door to the IGA and got talking to a local who told us that the Annual Tennant Creek Cup was on today, and that it was a big event for the town. So, change of plans, off to the races it was.

We parked at the races, got school work done and frocked up the best we could in our traveling clothes and thongs. We did ok, and didn’t feel to out of place.

Out of 6 races we picked 2 winners. It was a fun day out, watching the horses race on the red dirt. The kids enjoyed getting up close and personal to the horses before each races and seeing which one had a lot of energy, we would then put our bet on this one. I preferred to look for pretty ones, but I was told “pretty doesn’t win races” 🤷🏼‍♀️.

After an interesting visit to the bottle shop, where we had to wait an extremely long time in-line due to an altercation, we headed out of town for the night.

  • Little Roper or Little Ripper camp!

    14 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

What a spot, probably one of the best paid camp sites we have had.

The kids were craving some other kids to play with, so I booked us into Little Roper Bush camp for a few nights.

The kids have been playing non-stop on a hay bail playground, and I quote the kids who said “this is the best playground we have ever been on”. Daily reptile holding, buffalo feeding, nightly sugar glider feeding and the best bit, billy tea and Jonny cakes each morning for breakfast.

Jonny cakes are deep fried deliciousness 🤤 and it makes for a relaxing morning for me, the kids take their money and sort themselves out and I can sit back and enjoy a tea and some Jonny cakes myself.

Definitely a must do and it will be on our list to come back to.

  • Mother’s Day!

    14 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

This year Mother’s Day was on a travelling day but Lauren didn’t miss out. She was treated to a cooked breakfast that was gourmet thanks to some diced Italian herb tomatoes I found in the cupboard and home made hash browns. While breaky was being prepared the kids gave her a massage which she appeared to really enjoy. Also she didn’t do schoolwork with the kids, she had the day off. To top it all off, I flame grilled us the biggest T-bone steak I’d ever seen for dinner while the kids were busy playing on the hay bales with other kids at the Little Roper Camp. What a perfect Mother’s Day 😜Okumaya devam et

Another successful mission to Adelaide River fossicking for Amethyst.

I said to Brett we don’t have to stop, but I am so glad we did, we found some beauties.

In only 4 hours we had half filled the 20L bin bucket!

When we got to the Daly River, I spent the day washing and sorting out all my crystals, I was in heaven.

  • Barra Fishing Day 1

    20 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

What a great start! Go Brax!
The day started with the boat in the water early and I felt out a handful of snags before rafting up to the pontoon.
The kids and I decided to head out at 10am as the tide started to push in. After checking out a few spots and feeling our way through all the new timber we headed back toward camp.
With the pontoon in sight and the kids starting to peta out I saw the opportunity for a solo lure troll through some seriously thick timber. On the approach the sounder was lit up with snags and the boat barely scraped through. As the lure approached the zone it got smashed, I was on and the 60cm plus fish launched a meter into the air violently shaking its head and my bright green and red Barra Classic pulled from its jaws……. Splash and the fish was gone 😔
As I circled the boat round to go again I noticed Brax had my new rod in his hand, “what are you doing” I said, Brax “I’m having a go”………. 🙄. On the approach I was sure he was going to snag and ruin my next run. But then “I’m on” shouted Brax, I said, sure you’re not snagged? “No I’m on”, ok not really believing him I stopped the boat, and started pulling my lure in when his rod was nearly yanked from his hands, he was on and it was a good fish. We all worked together holding plenty of tension on the fish and manoeuvring the boat to negotiate the twisted maze of timber. With a glimpse of colour the kids both cursed loudly “holly shit, it’s massive”. Brax continued to do a great job reeling it away from the snags and towards the middle of the river. With the fish now in clear water and our hearts in our mouths we played it into the net.
    WOW! What a fish, 86cm.
Brax carried it up the the steep bank and through the camp proud as punch, with many admiring on lookers. Plenty of photo’s were taken and what an epic start to day one of our 2 week Barra expedition………
    You Beauty! 🎣

  • Brax Wins Again! 81cm Barra

    22 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya

The kids and I deployed the Cherabin pots and we caught 2 overnight. Brax was keen on a fish so off we went. I had a spot I was certain was holding good Barra but it was impossible to be trolled due to two large tree’s protruding out from the bank.
On the way down we pulled into our first snag and I trolled out a 65cm Barra on my first attempt, you beauty, I was very happy.
We continued trolling down to spot X and tied up on one of the trees. I rigged up the small 30 pound snapper rod with light weight and 8/0 hook. We baited it and Brax threw it in. It was killing me to watch, I wanted the rod but I thought Brax could have the first and I would have the second cherabin which also happened to be bigger lol. Brax seemed to be barely concentrating and was yapping away while I was 100% focussed on the rod. After less than 2 minutes I noticed the line taking off, “Brax Go”, we were on but with a few big yanks the fish snagged us 🙄
I was thoroughly disappointed, you can’t give these fish and inch however Brax had been putting the hours in with me so I re-rigged and gave him the second cherabin. This time, Brax had more instruction, no talking and constantly lift the line. Within a minute, after a lift, I noticed the line slacken and I yelled, “wind!”. As he wound the line slackened further until it was nearly at the boat and then bang! It turned and we were on a big fish, the drag was singing and Brax did really well to keep it from the snags and bring it back to the boat, I was very proud. We landed the 80cm steam train and Brax decided to keep it which meant we had to finish up as it didn’t fit in the esky.
Once again Brax had out fished me 😂

  • Lachlan’s First Legal Barra 🤙

    23 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Lachlan was keen to catch his first legal Barra and with 6 cherabin we headed to spot X. We arrived on the top of the tide and the fishing was hot. Lachie reeled in a 48cm on his first cast which gave him some curry on the light rod. Next cast out didn’t even hit the bottom and he was on again. I stepped back and watched the boys do everything. As Lachie muscled it in, it lept from the water and continued to fight hard. With the fish now closer to the boat and Brax on the net they both landed it and instantly Lachie knew it was his first keeper, he was so exited, he just kept saying “Yes! Yes, Yes”.
With the fish on the floor Lachie went straight to work, open bale, grips in, hook out, and cut the mouth in preparation for a photo. It measured 58cm and he wanted to keep it, he loves Barra so it was Barra for tea, however I was not so keen on having to fillet it.
When we arrived home, plenty more pictures were taken and we hit the cleaning tables. Lachie was very keen to learn to fillet, I was very apprehensive and nervous because we were 3 hours from the nearest hospital. I demonstrated a little bit then he was in there and basically filleted the whole fish, he even cut the wings out which were his favourite, and mine too.
We had a fire cook up that night and added Brax’s 80cm wings plus morrocan and butter, it was delicious. What a great end to a great day!

  • I Stole Lauren’s 86cm Barra

    24 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya

“Come out and I’ll get you a Barra” I told Lauren, and she replied “I’ll catch one, and it’ll be bigger than yours”. It was on!
Down to spot X and I loaded her up with a monster cherabin. But the tide shifted quickly and we had to move. I sounded out a great spot 50 meters away and we set up. After 15 minutes and a couple of casts, plenty of instruction by me, “lift the rod, jiggle it, wind in, cast again, use it like a lure” and so one she was losing interest. She wound in and said “look, the cherabin is dead”. I told her it didn’t matter and I was certain this snag was holding good fish. Not convinced she handed me the rod and opened a bag of chips. I threw out and worked the line up and down, not a minute later I was on, I tried to hand her the rod and she refused which delighted me, it was a horse in thick timber and it needed some heavy hands 😊
We only just landed it, Lauren must have thought I could lift the fish into the net (which is impossible given how heavy it was) cause on her first netting attempt the net never went in the water. I was now yelling in frustration “put the net in the water”, and we got it. 86cm was my biggest for the year and man I was exited. We released it after a couple of pictures and it was such a great feeling to spear the big girl in and watch her swim away.
I don’t feel bad, I caught it fare and square 😆

  • The Buffalo Attack

    25 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Brett and I woke up to the van violently shaking, all I could think was that a buffalo had breached the fence and was using the van to have a good scratch!

The van continued to shake, we considered getting up with torches to have a look, then we figured it must be the kids, but I just kept thinking they never move enough to shake the van that much. After it stopped we drifted off to sleep forgetting all about it by morning.

As I sat around the pool in the morning, I heard a lady call to a neighbor you were right you did feel the van shaking last night there was an EARTHQUAKE . I could not wait for Brett to get back from fishing to tell him the news.
