    Biking through Wat?

    I booked an e-bike tour around the Angkor temples but didn't quite realize what kind of bikes I'd booked.
    So we sent our 10 year old off riding a kind-of motorbike through the streets of Cambodia. Apart from one small crash (into her sister) and a little bit of blood and a mum nearly having a heart attack she was fine.
    We got to explore some of the lesser known temples, paths and jungle of Angkor and the tomb-raider temple! So cool to see how the jungle and massive trees grow over the structures and how they've been restored.
    I did miss the fine-print that Angkor Wat was not included in this "Most famous temples of Angkor e-bike tour" ... ha. (3)    Okumaya devam et

    The Temples of Angkor By Ariah

    Today we woke up at 5am to get to the breakfast before we had to go on our E-BiKes to some temples. Anyway, after breakfast we went down to reception but we were waiting for about an HOUR!!
    It turned out that the e-bike company didn’t know we had a booking because the tour agent didn’t tell them. But in the end the we got in contact with them.

    When they got there mum was surprised to see that we were riding on motorbike type things.

    We went to some temples and the old Royal Palace. (Ta Prohm, the tomb raider temples with trees growing over it that looked like a waterfall, snakes and a hand and Bayon temple, in the jungle with the elephant terrace and leper terrace) Butterflies were flying around and one landed on my shoe. Once we got to near the 2nd stop I crashed into india and got a bunch of scratches.
    We went to a Cambodian restaurant by the lake for lunch and it was really good.

    We rode our bike through the gateway of death and along a narrow dirt path, with lots of bumps, rocks and branches, on top of the old walls that they used to patrol the city on elephant. No one else was there and the sun sparkled on the grass so it looked like a fairy garden. After that we went to the old Royal Palace. Lots of you-tubers were filming the monkeys. I grabbed a palm fruit when fell down from a palm tree with a clunk. I fed it to the monkeys.

    When we got back to the biKes, we got on our bikes and rode home. Our top speed was 32kph. We went in the pool when we got home. For dinner we went to a restaurant called
    Best mom and I had a really good smoothie!
    When we got home | was sooo tired so

    Angkor Wat

    Exploring Angkor Wat. We explored the grounds of Angkor Wat with our wonderful guide Mae telling us the ancient stories depicted in the engravings around the hallways and translating some of the ancient Khmer texts for us. (He was fluent in Khmer, English, French and a bit of Ancient Khmer) It’s so amazing to see such an impressive temple from the 11th century so well restored. Nuts to hear the guide call some features “new” because they were added in the 16th century. #angkorwatOkumaya devam et

    Amazing food day

    It’s not often that Kylie is spoilt for choice at a restaurant but today we stopped for lunch at a really great vegan restaurant in town - and she was stumped…but only for a bit 😋

    Thing is, we were trying to have only small bite to eat as we knew we had a cooking class later that afternoon as an early dinner but with options including cauliflower nuggets, steamed dumplings, not-meatballs, oat milk smoothies, and, to top it all off, mango and sticky rice pudding 🤤🤤 - we had to try a few things at least.

    We headed off to the cooking class later that arvo, and the first stop for that was in the local market to get some insight on where the ingredients came from. We tried a fried mung bean donut (yum) there but it think the thing we’ll remember most is the still live fish flopping around on the floor of the stalls waiting to be snapped up for someone’s dinner!

    The cooking class was fun and we knocked up a feast of curries, rice, tempura mushroom, and tapioca banana pudding and honied sweet potato desserts 😋😋🤤

    We did our very best getting through as much as we could and went home very contented and jumped in the hotel pool to finish our day.    Okumaya devam et

    Today, I lost my pants!

    Today we got to our new hotel in Luang Prabang.
    I put my bag down in the room, and Dad knocked on my door.
    He said we had to go, as it was time to go for a walk to get dinner.

    Unfortunately, I looked down and realised my pants had come off and I had lost my them.

    Everyone waited until I found them and put them back on.
    Then we had dinner.

    Sunset on the Mekong

    Today we jumped on some bikes and had a ride around Luang Prabang.
    It’s a really nice little city on the banks of the Mekong River and full of decorated Buddhist temples.

    In the evening we jumped onto a ferry cruise to get a view of the city from the water.

    Ariah and India got to load up some fish to released later in the cruise as part of a good luck ceremony.
    Poor Ariah’s stool broke when she stood on it though, so her fish missed the holding tank and had to be rescued from the floor after everyone made sure Ari was ok. 🤕
    The ceremony also involved writing a wish on a piece of banana leaf to release into the Mekong with the lucky fishes which was lovely.
    Even better, we got to also write any burden we wanted to be rid of on another piece of banana leaf and those were tied to rock and sunk to the bottom of the Mekong, carrying away all our worries ☺️☺️

    The sunset was lovely and it felt like the cruise went really quickly.

    We headed off to a night market when after we docked. There is a Buddhist festival on at the moment so the market was extra big and busy.
    We got some good deals and the girls showed once again they are master hagglers.

    We finished the night with dinner at the food market, grabbing a little something from a bunch of stalls.    Okumaya devam et

    Rollin’ down the (Mekong) river

    20 years ago Kylie and Dale went to Thailand and heard from people we met that floating down the Mekong in a tyre tube in Laos was a crazy good time…

    We couldn’t make it there then so finally ticking that off this time was a must do especially for Kylz ☺️

    So we squeezed in a quick visit to Vang Viang via fast train.
    We did get off to a bit of a rocky start when the tour desk at the hotel told us we wouldn’t enjoy it as it was cold this time of year and “for young people”. (India and Ariah hid thinking that the unwitting tour organiser was going to cop a severe dressing down for their cool, hip, and young parents!!)

    Ignoring that fun-sponge, we trekked off in the morning through town and made our own arrangements directly and even got free local, homemade snacks as part of the deal!! Take that tour guy!! 👅

    One very bumpy ride in the back of a truck later and we were dumped in the river about 3km out of town, wished good luck, and set on our way in the cold, running waters of wet season Mekong 🤣

    The bars weren’t open as we went at the respectful time of 11am and they only opened for the…young (*cough*) people about an hour after that, but we didn’t mind.

    It was relaxing and fun and we saw some great scenery on the way down and had no issues…At least until we tried to get out at the end (that bit was less well explained to us) but we got there in the end as the guide at the other end chucked us out a rope weighted with a water bottle and dragged us to shore.

    Good morning Vietnam

    We made it to Vietnam 🇻🇳! No questions about the tear in my passport or India’s name being transcribed back to front by the hopeless visa people. We’ve had an action packed couple of days seeing the city of Hanoi. It’s such a vibrant city with the people and communities having fun on the streets of the city.     Temple of literature

    We visited the first university of Vietnam which is featured on the Vietnamese money. A big statue of Confucius is in the temple. There are stones with centuries of engravings of the smartest people in Vietnam and little bonsai scenes around the grounds.

    We had lunch at a restaurant nearby named KOTO that was started by a Vietnamese Australian and trains underprivileged young people to become chefs and hospitality staff.    Okumaya devam et

    Halong to Hanoi

    After a fun night keeping the other boats entertained with our karaoke we went to explore some of the caves in Halong bay. We worked up an appetite and came back to the boat for a delicious breakfast before heading back to port.

    On the way back to Hanoi we stopped off at a cafe/ workshop run by Vietnamese people with disabilities making very intricate crafts. Ariah was very happy to try her first fresh coconut. She thought it was delicious and refreshing.

    Back in Hanoi our lovely tour leader, Kien, took us on a street food walking tour. He also gave us a sneak peak into how the Hanoi locals live. We tried egg coffee from one of the oldest cafes in Hanoi. It’s like a coffee with a custard foam and is actually delicious. We then had some Vietnamese desserts which were a bit like crème caramel. We had some fresh banh mi. Finally we stopped off at a Vietnamese convenience store and stocked up on snacks for the next leg of the journey. We got mochis and Vietnamese pastries but we passed on the vacuum packed chicken feet.

    In the evening we jumped on an overnight train to our next destination. All the kids set up a movie night with snacks in one cabin while the adults sampled the goods from the beer trolley in the cabin next door.    Okumaya devam et

    Lunch at Nan and Pop Hue’s place.

    Our overnight train got us to Hue at around 11am and while we were waiting for our rooms to be ready, our tour leader Kien, managed to get us an invitation for an early lunch at a local family’s house.

    Our lunch started with Pop Hue offering us a morning shot of his homemade rice wine. Mot hai ba Yo. And then another one!! Mot hai ba Yo.

    Nan Hue cooked us up a feast. I think we counted 10+ courses. They told us about their kids and their farm. We ended the lunch with, you guessed it, a shot of homemade rice wine, Mot hai ba Yo.    Okumaya devam et

    Its a long way to Hue

    On a hot afternoon in Hue we visited the Imperial citadel and learned about the Vietnamese royal dynasty.

    We then cooled off with a Cyclo tour through the city. It was great seeing Vietnamese life as we were pedalled by these lovely gentleman. My guy had half a bottle of homemade rice wine in his cup holder and Dale’s enjoyed road raging with the motorbikea. We all managed to get in in a nap on the Cyclo despite riding through chaotic traffic. The bouncing, rumbling and arctic temperatures of our night on the train may have contributed to our napping ability. In between our naps the cyclo was a very fun way to see the city.Okumaya devam et

    Pagodas and incense

    Today we visited the Thien Mu Pagoda, which is a famous Buddhist monastery. A former monk from this monastery, in 1963, drove to Saigon and set himself alight to protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime.

    We then stopped off at a very Insta worthy street where all the shops make incense sticks. Ariah learned the technique of rolling lemongrass incense onto a bamboo stick.    Okumaya devam et

    Star fruit and tulips 🌷 💐

    At the tomb of one of the imperial emperors, the kids on the tour found a star fruit tree which was much more interesting than royal shrines and offerings. So they collected a morning tea of star fruit for everyone.

    We ate the star fruit at Lavin Home, which is a business run by deaf people who make and teach classes in paper flower making. We learned a bit of sign language and made some beautiful paper tulips. We got to make a wish so we all made a wish for our big kid Keyala Jewel to get well and out of hospital quickly (all except India who wished for happiness and spirit fingers 👐 😂)

    Spirit fingers 👐 is sign language for happiness.

    In the afternoon the mums went for a massage and tried the local Hue Salted Coffee at Hue T-roasters, which tasted a bit like salted caramel.

    After a swim we did a mini Hue pub crawl to try the Vietnamese craft beers and conveniently there was a bubble tea shop next to the pub for the kids. We ate a very tasty noodle dinner at quan an an tam, a 5 star but teeny tiny restaurant. Dale had crab and snail noodles, the girls had pork noodles and I had sake fruit noodles which tasted a bit like roast potatoes but looked like a citrus fruit. Our whole dinner for 4 was about $15.    Okumaya devam et

    Up, down peddles, up, down, down

    Today’s activity for the tour was a bike ride through the country side around Hoi An.
    It’s was a great way to get a glimpse of life behind the tourist curtain.

    We stopped at a local farm a walked through the herbs being farmed there and sampled the lemon basil ice tea (yum), we cycled past massive buffalo cooling themselves in the rivers and mud paddies, road through the smoke as the locals bury off the remains from the last rice harvest in the fields, and stopped for a delicious home cooked meal to watch the sunset over the river.
    We were all pretty tired and full after that, so catching a boat back up the river to the old town for dinner and cocktails/beers was a great way to finish the day.    Okumaya devam et

    Ho Chi Minh City

    Time to add another flight to our growing count 🛫…of to Ho Chi Minh City…I mean Saigon…I mean…

    We kicked off with a visit to the local market and took in the sensory explosion that is trying to choose a meal with multiple owners yelling out trying to convince you their bahn mi is somehow better than the one next to them while someone else wants you to buy jewellery or a shirt 🤯🤣

    Then had a walk around town to get our bearings including checking out the old post office that was built by Gustav Eiffel!

    Kylie made a friend in a little cafe we stopped at…more like a firm but fun teacher really. The funniest little ~10 year old Viet boy tried to teach Kylie how to count to 10 in Vietnamese.
    He found it quite frustrating 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ that she kept saying “mosquito” instead of “ten” though

    Gooooodbyyyyeee VietNAAAM!

    For our last day in Vietnam, we joined our tour buddies on a trip to the Cu Chi tunnels that were part of the famous Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam War.

    The Vietnamese are very much not focused on this part of their history. Rather, chieving happiness is their focus these days, but this is still obviously very important part of their past and they do a good job (with tourists at least) of talking about both sides of the conflict in a balanced way when it does come up.

    Seeing the tunnels, the traps, the food the VC ate, and the general conditions in the jungles was really eye opening…as opposed to the adjacent National Rifle Range in the park when was ear splitting!
    (For $380 you could belt out 100 rounds on an M60!!)

    Very glad we went here before leaving Vietnam to round out our visit.

    We’ve loved Vietnam (a lot of that thanks to our guide Kien - tour guide by day, fighting crime by night)    Okumaya devam et

    Big effort to get to our last stop

    5am…

    That’s when we jumped in our transfer to the airport this morning as we said a bleary eyed good bye to Vietnam.
    We had two planes, a boat, and a taxi truck and 12hrs so travel in our immediate future.

    However, we knew once we hit Koh Samui and waited for our boat with a cheap cold Chang by the crystal blue waters that it was worth it.

    Arriving later at our home for the next few days as the sun set behind the mountains just confirmed it…

    Our airbnb in Chaloklum

    We’ve arrived in Koh Pha Ngan and have woken up on a picture postcard beach. Our Airbnb is right on a white sand beach with turquoise waters and a couple of colourful fishing boats. The Airbnb is a beach shack but it has fans and air conditioning and is very clean and decorated with boho styling.

    We woke up and walked straight out the front door into the water.

    Ariah and I went searching for an ideal hammock tree down Malibu beach but the all already have swings and hammocks. There are a couple of small restaurants and drink spots and every shop has cannabis on the menu. Apparently it’s legal in Thailand.    Okumaya devam et
