    Seit Wochen geht alles Schlag auf Schlag. Komisch. Sobald man kündigt, hat man mehr zu tun, als vorher.
    Umziehen, Impfen, Organisieren, Flüge buchen, erste Übernachtungen aussuchen, Abschiedsfeier, Packliste schreiben, zwischendurch immer wenn es passt sich über HR und Ämter ärgern und Impfen...
    Und natürlich essen. Aber das kann ich ja gut!

    Our flight took off with 1 hour delay which caused us a bit of a hassle.
    Does anyone know why they sprayed the wings with green florescent stuff? We need to google that.

    Manila

    Ich war noch nie in Bangkok, aber bei dem, was ich davon gehört habe, würde ich das hier Mini-Bangkok nennen.
    Eine Menge Verkehr, etwas mehr Staub und Lärm, garniert von marodem Beton, Slumflickenwerk und allerlei Gerüchen. Und Plastik. Essen in Plastik, in Tüten verpackt. Plastikmüll oben, unten, überall.
    Pflanzen, Grün, eine Möglichkeit zum Ausruhen sucht man schwerlich. Hier wird nicht geplant, sondern man macht einfach Mal. Und zwar so, wie man denkt. So zumindest mein erster Eindruck.

    Und so falsch ist er wahrscheinlich nicht.

    Doch, wie in jeder Stadt, gibt es auch schöne Ecken. Das ist dort, wo man meistens stehen bleibt und Bilder macht. In diesem Fall der nördliche Teil der Stadt. Gepflegtere Gebäude, sauberer, schöner (ich glaube, dazu sagt man meistens "touristisch"). Optimaler Zeitpunkt, um hier zu sein, erwischt. Vor Sonnenuntergang durch den Park schlappen, ne Stunde im Gras schlafen, im Dunkeln vorbei an den Lichterbäumen Richtung heim.    Read more

    Mit dem Bus nach Tagytay, auf zum Vulkan

    Es regnet. Ein guter Tag, um weiter zu fahren. Es geht nach Tagaytay, dort ist ein Vulkan, der gerade aktiv ist. Bestimmt gibt's was zu sehen. Eigentlich ist es nicht nur ein Vulkan, sondern ein Vulkankrater im See eines Vulkankraters. Sozusagen ein Pickel auf einem Pickel.

    Im Bus läuft Fernsehen, sehr interessant anzuschauen. Ein Mix aus chinesischen Kung-Fu filmen, japano-style Gameshows und Indian-Drama.
    Sprachlich wird innerhalb eines Satzes fließend zwischen drei Sprachen gewechselt. Tagalog, Englisch, Spanisch.
    Die Werbung ist wie überall. Es dreht sich um Waschmittel, Haarprodukte, Essen.    Read more

    Above the clouds

    We wanted to get a nice view of Taal volcano and lake so we took a jeepney to "Picnic Grove" and "People's Park in the Sky". We knew there would surely be rainfall in the afternoon, but we didn't expect to be inside the clouds, or even above the clouds. The park deserves it's name.😊 I looooved the big old tree with the net of roots over the ground at picnic grove.Read more

    Meet the locals

    Wenn man sich Zeit nimmt, kann man Leute kennenlernen. Das ist das schöne, wenn man nicht von Sehenswürdigkeit zu Sehenswürdigkeit und von Hotspot zu Hotspot hetzt, sondern durch die Straßen schlendert, nichts vor hat und sich treiben lässt.
    Die meisten Philippinos (Philippinesen? Philippineer?) sind, wenn sie dir nicht gerade eine Tricyclefahrt zum Touristenpreis oder ein paar Meter getrappel auf ihrem etwas zu klein geratenen Pferd (hier ist alles etwas zu klein) verkaufen wollen, sehr freundlich und reden mit einem.
    Durch Zufall haben wir gestern Roc in seinem Bistro kennengelernt und den Abend bei ihm verbracht. Er saß bei uns, hat sich mit uns unterhalten, viel erzählt und Essen, das sein Vater kocht, gebracht. Gratis. Sehr nett.
    Heute waren wir ihn bis mittags wieder besuchen, einfach nur zum reden.

    Two sides of the same coin

    Manila is a very big and busy place. It's a city of skyscrapers, cars, tricycles, big shopping malls and food everywhere you go.

    Manila is a city with many modern and chic buildings and people who eat at expensive restaurants after shopping luxury designer brands from Greenbelt Mall. There are even a few green spaces where you can relax and sit for a while.

    Though, Manila is also a city where you find a lot of poverty, misery and trash (lots and lots of trash). In Manila, I've seen more poor people than in Cambodia and Myanmar combined, which are the most poor countries in southeast asia together with East Timor. There are so many people living on the streets, sleeping on cardboard and looking malnourished, it's really heartbreaking. I don't know if it's been like this before the pandemic, but a friend, who lived here, told me that the situation worsened a lot during the last two years due to travel bans and missing money from tourists.     1Why you don't use maaan? It so much safer

    Eine Vielzahl and Transportmöglichkeiten.

    1) Trycicle. Motorrad mit anschraubtem Beiwagen. Gibt es ist auch als BMX, da wird kräftig in die Pedale getreten. Teuer (man kann aber die Touristenpreis herunterhandeln), doch überall verfügbar und kann kommt überall hin.

    2) Trycicle Cabs. Preis wie Trycicle, aber es passen bis zu fünf rein. Das macht es dann günstiger. Man kann auf einheimische mit dem gleichen Ziel warten und den Preis aufteilen.

    3) Jeepney. Sehen aus, wie Proll-Schulbusse. Davon gibt es viele und in ebenso vielen Ausführungen. Jeder Jeepney Besitzer legt Wert auf Individualität und schraubt und schweißt und bringt Zusatzteile an, Hauptsache, es sieht protzig aus und ist laut. Fühlt sich nach den Customizing Modi aus Need for Speed oder GTA an.
    Offene Tür, zwei lange Bänke, es quetschen sich bis zu 22 Personen rein, man schreit wo man hin will und für wie viele man zahlt, das Geld wird über die Fahrgäste nach vorne gegeben. Anfangs schwierig, aber wir haben mittlerweile den Dreh raus. Günstigstes Verkehrsmittel!

    4) Pferdekutsche. Für die Romantiker. Preis keine Ahnung. Nie benutzt. Die meisten Pferde sehen relativ gepflegt aus, was eigentlich überrascht.

    5) Taxi. Selbsterklärend. Teuer.

    6) Busse / Reisebusse. Super günstig und die sicherste und bequemste Möglichkeit lange Strecken zurückzulegen. Meistens ist es ihnen so kalt wie in einem Kühlschrank dank der Klimaanlage. Manche haben Fernseher installiert, zur Belustigung oder Belästigung der Passagiere.

    7) Vans. Sowas wie Langstrecken Taxis, ca. 4x so teuer wie Reisebusse aber ähnlich komfortabel.

    Anschallgurte gibt's übrigens fast nirgendwo. Und wenn es dann mal welche gibt, werden sie nicht benutzt.    Read more

    A home made of bamboo

    On our way to El Nido we stopped in Puerto Princesa for one night and immediately regretted not staying for a longer period of time.

    This was the prettiest accommodation we've been to during our time in the Philippines. The place is built with lots of bamboo and a lot of beautiful details. The owners are super friendly and there are a lot of dogs around. It felt like sleeping in the jungle. I saw a little brown frog in the shower and there were centipedes and many other animals roaming around the house.

    The owners told us that most hotels and hostels had to close due to the pandemic and the rules and restrictions enforced by the governments and they could only keep the place because they got a double income. The wife is a teacher, that's why they could earn money even without guests and tourists. Maybe we'll one day come to really comprehend the negative impact the pandemic had (not only regarding physical health, but mental health, the economic system, trade, cultural exchange, and the peoples existence in poorer countries as well) on the world.     Fahrt von Puerto Princesa nach El Nido

    Nach nur einer Nacht im Bamboo Nest geht's weiter in den Norden der Insel Palawan. Natürlich mit Zwischenstopp beim Cousin des Fahrers, damit alle Essen können. Schlau.
    Die Fahrt dauert zwischen fünf und sieben Stunden ist sehr holprig.

    Unterwegs sieht man eingefalle Hütten, gebrochene Straßen und Brücken, lose Bauteile, umgestürzte Bäume und Palmen, zerstörte Flusspromenaden, Häuser im Aufbau. Und jetzt fällt mir auf, dass es gar nicht unbedingt daran liegt, dass die Leute es hier nicht draufhaben mit organisiert und langlebig bauen. Sondern vielleicht daran, dass es einfach jedes Jahr ein bis drei Tsunamis gibt, die durch den Gemüsegarten fegen. Mit dem, was übrig bleibt, baut man wieder neue Hütten, da dann eben aussehen, wie Flickenwerk.

    Die Natur außerhalb der Ortschaften ist A-TEM-BE-RAU-BEND! Regenwald, wie in Tierdokus. Kann kaum erwarten, darin herumzulaufen. Hoffentlich gibt's ein paar Wanderwege.
    Bilder aus dem fahrenden Auto habe ich gemacht, aber die einzigen, die einigermaßen etwas wurden, sind die, auf denen zu sehen ist, wie mein dicker schlafender Sitznachbar seine zierliche Frau begräbt. Dann gibt's halt nur das zu sehen 😁.    Read more

    Ich habe eine Mission zu erfüllen. Alles unbekannte muss probiert werden.
    An jeder Ecke lauert eine neue Aufgabe. Entweder in der Form von kleinen Buden oder fahrbaren Grills und Fritteusen. Es wird gebrutzelt, gekocht, geraucht, frittiert, gebuttert, gespießt, gebeutelt undundund. Praktisch: alles gibt's in kleinen Mengen für kleines Geld.

    Was es zu kaufen gibt ist schwer zu durchschauen, vor allem, wenn es im Teigmantel steckt. Doch keine Angst! Sofern keine Leiche herumliegt, ist es wohl genießbar. Und fragen kann man immer. Mit der Antwort etwas anfangen, manchmal.

    Unter anderem versteckt sich in der Geschmacks-Wundertüte Squidballs, gebratene Fleischspieße, halb ausgebrütete Eier, Banane, Innereien, Fleischbällchen, Suppen etc.    Read more

    In the Philippines, there's food everywhere. Small streetfood stalls huddled next to each other, selling all kinds of food. If you're a carnivore, you will find plenty of options. The Filipinos love their meat.

    If you're a vegetarian, you won't starve but you should be ok with a very imbalanced and one-sided diet (and very unhealthy in my point of view). 😅 One of the vegetarian food options you can find are bananas: raw bananas, fried bananas, bananas put into something and then fried, of course with a lot of oil, which makes the healthy banana less healthy but more yummy. 😋
    In El Nido we found "Crunchy Banana" (fried banana with crunchy stuff) and "Banana Burrito" a banana put into a sweet tortilla and the fried). The price was 0,20€ per piece, which is super cheap even for Filipino prices.

    If you're a vegan, you'll probably need to supplement a lot of nutrients or cook yourself, as you'll only find rice, corn and a few raw fruits.

    Into the jungle

    We went into the jungle today. Well, we actually live in the jungle right now, but we went further into the jungle. A 45 minutes hike led us through grasslands with coconut trees, very thick rainforest, many bamboo trees, lots of big insects and several rivers we had to cross by walking straight through them. It was hot but lots of fun and the wet clothes from the rivers were really refreshing.

    At the end of our short hike, we reached a waterfall: "Nagkalitkalit waterfall". There, I found one of my declared enemies. 🧐 I first encountered them in Tagaytay and was just horrified by the sheer size of their bodies. The big black and yellow spiders I saw back there were around 15-20cm in size and there were so many of them chilling in their nets on the sides of the road that the walk back after I spotted them was like a creepy horror trip for me.

    Today, luckily there was only one and it was veeeery far away, hanging out way up over the waterfall. In the first photo, you'll see it was very far away and then I zoomed in. 😅 I think my arachnophobia is getting a bit better. Still, they are not my friends. But the waterfall was beautiful and it was very peaceful there.    Read more

    Ille Cave

    We rented a "motorbike" (which was an automatic scooter 🛵) to drive to Ille Cave without spending a fortune on tricycles. We first heard about Ille Cave in Manila and were really looking forward to going there if we had the chance to.

    Excavation at the cave started in 1998, led by a German archaeologist. They found human bones, pottery and burial atrifacts there dating back 6,000 years (some even 10,000 years according to Wikipedia). Furthermore, they found lots of shells (theory: sea levels were higher or people brought the shells with them from the sea) and tiger bones, which means Tigers once used to live here.

    The area directly in front of the cave has been used as a graveyard for thousands of years. Our guide showed us where the archaeologists discovered many of the artifacts and bones and showed us the other areas where they didn't do excavations yet (meaning there are probably a looooot of human remains and burial artifacts in the ground waiting to be discovered 😀).

    After visiting the cave, we took the better road (the other road was a gravel / dirt road and very muddy after the rain) and met Sven from Germany. The first German we met up until now! 😁

    We're on a boat

    We did two island hopping tours to explore the Bacuit Bay and we looooved it. 😍

    We were snorkeling a lot and saw many fish, corals (we were already able to identify and name many of the corals), anemones, sea cucumbers and starfish.
    We saw these animals: 🐠🐟🦀🐚🦋 and many more. There was a baby shark but we were too slow. Some of the others saw it. 🦈 Maybe we will see one in negros. I would love to see some sea turtles. ☺️

    Eines der 7 neuen Weltwunder

    Da sind wir nun. Zweimal kreuz und quer über die Insel geschlappt und was findet man heraus? Hier befindet sich eins der "new 7 wonders of nature". Es ist ein unterirdischer Fluss. Und sehr beeindruckend dazu. Also verdient in dieser Liste.

    Nachdem man sich auf dem Weg zum Pier durch etliche Brillen-Hut-und-Souvenir-verkäufer und unzählige Anbieter von Fruchtshake geschlagen hat, geht es mit einem Boot rüber zum anderen Strand. Dort lauern keine diebischen Händler. Nein! Es sind Affen! Doch genau so diebisch. Sagt man zumindest. Auf uns wirkten sie eher faul und gelangweilt. Aber irgendwie cool, freie Affen zu sehen, die nicht zur Gattung homo sapiens gehören.

    Mit einem kleinen Paddelboot geht es dann durch den kleinen Eingang im Fels, eine halbe Stunde durch die Dunkelheit. Laura hat noch nie so viele Fledermäuse gesehen! Und ich auch nicht. Alles voll von flederndem Flausch.
    Felsformationen wie aus Abenteuerfilmen, stetiges Tropfen von oben und sonst nur Dunkelheit und Stille (die manchmal vom quakenden Tourguide gebrochen wird). Eindrucksvoll, wirklich.
    Der Fluss ist gesamt 8 km lang (4 km passierbar) und bis zu 9 m tief, der Höhlenkomplex 24 km lang mit Hallen bis zu 65 m hoch mit vielen vielen Seitengängen und Verzweigungen. Normalerweise kommen in Höhlen nur 3-4 Mineralien vor, in dieser Höhle wurden 11 Mineralien gefunden, darunter 3 neue Höhlenmineralien.

    Das ist Kokosnuss.
    Im Wesentlichen wie bei uns. Etwas leckerer und leichter zu schälen. Jetzt wissen wir auch, wie man es richtig macht.

    Bevor der Kampf anfängt, verbeugt man sich, sagt buko buko. Damit ist die Zeremonie beendet und der respektvolle Umgang miteinander versprochen, egal wie herum der Kampf endet.
    Die Kokosnuss hat ein Gesicht. Zwei Augen und einen Mund. Man piekt ihr zuerst ins Auge, das macht sie kurz kampfunfähig und macht sie gleichzeitig inkontinent. Den Saft fängt man auf. Das lohnt sich, denn man sagt, dass die Kraft einer besiegten Kokosnuss auf denjenigen übergeht, der ihren Saft trinkt.
    Aus einer Kokosnuss kommt exakt 4,25 cl (0,5 oz) Saft, das ist reguliert durch die philippinische Regierung und fällt in anderen Ländern unterschiedlich aus.
    Dann verfolgt man die Linie zwischen den Augen mit dem Finger nach oben, das schläfert sie ein, stoppt auf halber Länge und schlägt sie dann auf einen Stein. Es muss ein Stein sein. Und er muss härter sein, als die Kokosnuss. Sonst wacht sie auf und die Rache wird fürchterlich. Nur wenige haben den Kampf gegen eine rachsüchtige Kokosnuss überstanden.
    Entlang der Naht sollte sie aufbrechen, der Kampf gegen das Schalentier ist gewonnen.
    Das Fleisch der philippinischen Kokosnuss lässt sich überraschend leicht mit einem Löffel lösen. Nur selten löst sich etwas von der inneren Leiterplatine (verantwortlich für deren katzenhaften Reflexe), die etwas holzig, aber ebenfalls genießbar ist.

    Another option if you are a vegetarian in the Philippines and like to eat sweet stuff, is everything you can get at the bakery.

    There are lots of available sweets and pastries, some are too hard or too sweet for our taste, but some are super fluffy and delicious.

    The colours range from yellow to pink, purple and brown (typically chocolate flavour). My favourite is banana bread, but I tried one purple ball of sweetness in Manila and still search for a that particular type of pastry. It was soooo good 😍 I think it was Taro flavour.

    Geld auf den Philippinen

    Bisher haben wir einiges gelernt. Zum Beispiel, dass man meistens bessere Preise kriegt, wenn man darauf besteht. Dass man keinem Philipp so richtig trauen kann, weil eigentlich keiner eine richtige Ahnung hat, es aber nicht zugeben will. Zehn Leute, zehn verschiedene Antworten. Ja, es fährt ein Bus; nein, es fährt kein Bus; ja es fährt ein Bus, aber nicht von hier; ich kenne jemanden, der einen Bus besaß; mein Bus ist bequemer (ist er nicht) und schneller (ist er nicht); usw.
    Jetzt haben wir noch etwas neues gelernt: nicht jeder ATM, den du auf der Karte findest, ist auch da. Oder nimmt Kreditkarte an, falls er da ist. Demnach immer genug Cash in der Tasche haben! Das wussten wir schon, aber kombiniert mit der vorigen Lektion macht es heute bumm und unser Plan, nach Balabac zu gehen für ein paar Tage, scheitert. Kein einziger ATM auf der südlichen Hälfte Palawans. Naja, einen gab es dann schon, aber der war kaputt.
