Malta Placement

  • Resans start
    21 februari 2018
  • Day 2: Wied il-Għajn

    22 februari 2018, Malta ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

Doesn't take long to walk round the area and it will be great for early morning runs! Huge selection of different cafes and restaurants to chose from. Headed off round the seafront and within half an hour had walked round to St Thomas Bay, having found a safe place to cross the road!. Lots of building working going on and some abandoned unfinished apartments. It was nice to be able to eat outside in February!Läs mer

  • Day 3: Lets try out the Buses

    23 februari 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Reminded today it is still February as very cold wet and windy. Caught the bus to a local fishing village which was very pretty with all the colourful boats but it was strangely quiet for a Friday, in fact only a small Costa Coffee was open! Maybe try coming back here on a Sunday when they hold a Fish Market?? Really wishing I had brought another jumper with me too.Läs mer

  • Day 4: Valletta

    24 februari 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Bus trip to Valletta only takes 40 minutes, and they run every half hour. Bus drivers operate their own schedule so best to arrive at the stop at least 10mins early and make sure you wave to get them to stop! Valletta is a vibrant old town with incredible historical churches, lots of shops, people and touristy things to do. Took in the Malta experience which is a cinema show of the history and includes a tour of the Knights of St John Hospital . Came across the worlds largest crochet blanket which when complete will be distributed to the homeless. Will definitely be coming back here at weekends and evenings.Läs mer

  • Week 1 of placement

    26 februari 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Who would have thought I would spend my first day on placement playing in a ball pool and the rest of the week looking for new toys and equipment!
The facilities here are pretty amazing. As well as a fully equipped gym, a 25m swimming pool, and horse riding facilities there are 3 multi-sensory rooms. One for soft play to develop coordination and balance. A dark room for sensory stimulation through tactile and visual input, and a white or quiet room for calm and relaxation. Some of the week was spent observing children (School Out reach Programme) at play in the rooms with their Learning support assistants (LSA). Some of the clients (Adults with LD) can be encouraged to join in team activities such as a treasure hunt or obstacle courses. It was fun planning and setting up a course with varying degrees of difficulty so all the group could take part, including myself and Grace!
Most of the clients have some degree of Autism. So lots of research required to learn about how to relate to children with this condition to help them develop. Other conditions include Downs Syndrome and Cerebral palsy.
As well as the LSA accompanying the children there are numerous volunteers, which can make it difficult to interact with the client on a 1:1 basis. Not quite sure yet of the OT involvement or role with the children from the SOP so will see how this develops.
Overall it has been a very easy week, with only 7 hours contact time with clients at play in the MSR. Regular breaks and early finish times seem to be encouraged here. As I am used to a much faster and busier pace of work adjusting to this relaxed approach is a novelty. This has allowed the opportunity for research into interventions I am unfamiliar with such as therapeutic horse riding. I am looking forward to formulating a better understanding of the role of Occupational Therapy at Inspire and getting my own caseload.

  • Day 11: Hazy day in Sliema

    3 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

After a Friday evening walk along the seafront in Marsaskala and the compulsory stop for beers in a bar (Coffee Calpso ~ small friendly place with a good vibe and Maltese music plus free snacks!) decided we would take a ferry to Sliema on Saturday. It was quite a hazy day and had a long walk along Sliema's beach of golden rocks covered in rock pools. Sliema is great for shops with two large plaza's to choose from and plenty of restaurants and cocktail bars to while away some hours people watching.Läs mer

  • Week 2 of Placement

    5 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Following a risk assessment it has been decided that the Multi sensory rooms are not quite up to the standards expected (See the picture of the broken music board). This is good news for us as one of the learning objectives is to bring about a service improvement! Also we have been invited to attend a series of weekly workshops: "To support the building of therapeutic relationships and effective connections through the application of systemic ideas" sounds interesting!
Had the opportunity to observe in two different areas of Inspire this week:
Autism Early Intervention for children aged 4 to 6 where they follow a clear schedule of activities designed to work on and improve motor skills, communication, and social interaction. I enjoyed meeting with the speech therapist and observing the work they do.
STAR 25 for adults with cerebral palsy and other comorbidities. These clients attend for 25 hours each week and follow a schedule of activities to provide different sensory stimulation. Most have very limited non verbal communication. This was a challenging experience as I have never worked with clients with severe disability before. I found it quite hard and not really sure how I feel about this experience yet. It was useful to see the work of the physiotherapist who carry out a range of passive movements with the clients. However a highlight for me was planning and implementing my first physical activity intervention for the Student Outreach clients (SOP) I knew all those obstacles courses I made for my girls on our beach holidays would come in handy! I called it the 5x activity course (5 different actions each had to be done 5 times) It worked!

  • Day 18: A walk to St Thomas Bay

    10 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

7.00am the construction men start with their jack hammering even on a Saturday!!! So we had to go somewhere slightly more peaceful. Today was hotter then anticipated and guess who forget to put the sun cream on! Will I ever learn?? Beautiful relaxing day even had a paddle in the sea!
It turns out I have come on placement with and I quote "a vegetarian who doesn't really like vegetables!" This limits the places we can eat as although Marsaskala has plenty of restaurants very few cater for vegetarians which is surprising. So we have agreed if all else fails on this placement we will open a vegetarian restaurant instead !

  • Day 19: The Rosary Chapel

    11 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

This was an unexpected treat! On taking some photographs of the view from a tiny chapel built in 1856 a gentleman in the chapel insisted I followed him to the roof for a better view. I had to climb the tiniest stone spiral staircase of 40 steps but it was delightful! Stayed for the English service, so many different nationalities in the congregation and the priest drank all the communion wine and only gave out the bread!! Is this usual in catholic services? Will go again to find out.. Lovely to meet other people who worked at Inspire there too.Läs mer

  • Week 3 of Placement

    12 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

Lovely to meet Roosa an fellow OT student from Finland who will be working with us. We now have a weekly schedule to follow and are hoping we will be able to carry out some OT assessments soon. It seems schedules and plans change daily at Inspire so it is best to have a flexible approach and the ability to think quickly to accommodate the unexpected changes and plan activities! Definitely more reading is required.
Sometimes placement can feel like being on the 'The Apprentice' where your every action and reaction is being observed, really nice to get feedback that your engagement and contribution to the team has been noticed and is appreciated.

  • Day 25: The 3 Cities

    17 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

The great thing about a placement in Malta is its not too far for family to visit!
Julie and I were persuaded by an elderly ferryman to take a traditional Maltese boat ride from Valletta to the 3 cities, mainly Vittoriosa. Completed a walking tour through the picturesque narrow alleyways to explore the sights of the Norman House, Inquisitors Palace and Church of St Lawrence, which homes a statue of St Nicholas ~ who really was a little fellow!
When in Malta always remember to look up, the ceilings in churches are incredible as is the ornate stone work surrounding some of the windows on houses.

  • Day 26: Windswept at St Peter's Pool

    18 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Marsaxlokk looks completely different on a Sunday with its busy and extensive market selling everything from fresh fish to shoes. Not so much a ghost town now. Bought some local sweet treats for our picnic at St Peter's Pool. This is a lovely bay to catch some rays and even have a swim (which I might consider doing in May!?) Took a beautiful 5.5km walk over the headland to get back to Marsaskala. Took a good hour so was nice to break the walk with wine at St Thomas Bay restaurant.Läs mer

  • Day 27: Feast of St Joseph

    19 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Well its not all sunny and blue sky in Malta. Today started off as a cold wet and windy public holiday. Grace, myself and Julie took the bus to Valletta then onto Mdina and Rabat, for the Feast of St Joseph. A colourful procession through the streets of Rabat with a Marching band and lots of 'feasting' stalls of traditional Maltese sweets. The main procession took place in the evening where a statue of Joseph was carried through the streets from one church to another.
We visited the Catacombs of St Paul's which are a warren of burial chambers cut into the rock underground. Mdina is a beautiful walled city but proves to be bit of a wind tunnel with its high walls and narrow streets. Took refuge from the wind in Fontenella's restaurant which looks out towards Mosta for some delicious cake!

  • Week 4 of Placement

    20 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Working with different OTs is really helping me formulate styles and approaches that I may wish to adopt once qualified as an OT practice educator in the future.
It is really interesting learning about and Autistic charateristics whilst building a therapeutic relationship with twin boys through a play intervention!
It was lovely to have a visit from Fiona our placement tutor from York St Johns university. Being able to share our thoughts and reflections of the learning opportunities and facilities was very much welcomed.
Thank you Fiona for taking Grace and I shopping and sorry for telling your husband to drive the wrong way up a one way street - the driving is so random in Malta that I hadn't realised!
The fresh farm eggs were much appreciated, with another hilarious comment from Grace. On seeing the mud Grace said "I don't think I can eat eggs from a chicken" Gill: "Oh what types of egg do you usually eat?" Grace: " Ones from a supermarket" !!!

  • Day 32: Rest and relaxation

    24 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Placement can be exhausting so a restful weekend was in order with frequent visits to my favourite coffee bar 'Coffee Circus'. Found a new car for Jenni. Those of you who know me well know I struggle with pronunciations sometimes (goujons, ambulance etc) well the same just happened when asking for this delicious quinoa salad!!
Met up with some of the volunteers and attended the opening night of a new reggae bar - Zion!

  • Week 5: Getting ready for Easter

    26 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

Two short weeks for placement as Inspire closes for Easter. Only working Monday and Tuesday. Unfortunately our educator was ill with a high fever so it was myself and Grace who had to run the multi-sensory rooms. Decided to split the groups to enable the children to explore some rooms individually which allowed for one to one interaction. A successful two days.
Grace headed home for Easter so had a farewell meal in an brand new Indian restaurant.

  • Day 36: Not much happening!

    28 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Sometimes you just have to do ordinary things like shopping and washing!
Here are some random photos of my trip so far that wouldn't fit on the other pages. I said previously you need to look up when in the churches in Malta, well the floors are pretty impressive too.
Local people tend to complain about the buses but finding them really good. Although the schedules are more like guidelines they do run regularly even on weekends, evenings and public holidays. Which is a vast difference from York.

  • Iż-Żejtun, Malta

    30 mars 2018, Malta ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    Day 38 Good Friday Procession
Day started off with a trip to the airport to collect Caris. Very happy mummy catching up on hugs!
Headed to Zejtun to see a Good Friday procession depicting the story of Jesus up to his crucifixion. The statues are huge and carried through the village by local men in white drapes.
It is quite a slow and sombre affair with bands playing slow marches. The costumes are immaculate and the actors (local villagers) are not allowed to smile.

  • Day 42: Windy whistle stop bus tour

    3 april 2018, Malta ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Explored the whole of the southwest area of Malta on an open top 'hop on hop off' bus tour!
Ghar Dalam cave is one of the oldest caves on the island dating back to Neanderthal man where lots of animal skeletons have been found. The museum had a room full of bones!
Blue grotto cave is a natural wonder with crystal clear blue waters. The sea was too rough today to take a boat trip inside so walked along the sea cliffs and into the cove.
Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are two prehistoric temples built they believe with altars that are illuminated during the summer and winter solstice.
